PDF Optimizer decreases resolution, increases file size

I've noticed that the file size of my PDF files INCREASES now when I optimize them now that I've updated to version 7.0.7. The image resolution still decreases but the files increase significantly. For example, I have a 2 page document that originally was 3.2mb as a hi-resolution PDF. After I optimized it down to 72dpi for the images the file increased to 20.5mb!! I use this feature for documents that we publish on our web sites or to send a proof to a customer.
Is this just a new bug in version 7.0.7?

MAC G5, 1 gb RAM, OS 10.4
Indesign CS3
Acrobat version : at least 7.0.6 or newer (I'm not at work to verify the version)
I'm having the same problem. Doing a SAVE AS does not fix anything.
I have created a High Res PDF of a 56 page catalogue using Indesign CS3. I had to divide the document into two sections. The first file is 131 megs and the other 78 megs. I have to print high res for the client. Then I need to downsize the resolution so that I can send the catalogue to the client. Whether I choose PDF Optimizer or Reduce file..., the 131 megs PDF became 1.27 GB and not to mention the time wasted! This is enormous! I assure you that I have checked all settings for the PDF.
To counter the problem, I have to do a SAVE AS POSCRIPT file. Then I reduce the size using Acrobat Distiller. The 131 megs file then became 21 megs, which is what it should have been with Optimizer.
I don't understand what's happening with the Optimizer? It seems that there's an update version that has installed this bug. Which one? How to fix this problem? Is there anyone on this earth that knows what to do?

  • Does publishing as PDF increase file size? Is there a way to manage this?

I am looking for any ways to reduce file size of presentations. We have to publish as PDF for single file purposes. I know you can change settings in Presenter publishing, but does publishing as PDF have any affect on file size and if so, are there ways to reduce file size?

My Mac has 4 mail accounts coming into it, but you are correct, one of them is a POP account, (and unfortunately it is the main @ account, and is the one associated with my apple id, since we've had it for years).  I couldn't figure out how to replace this with the Imap version, short of deleting that account entirely.
Is this what I have to do?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Help!..CS4 IS INCREASING FILE SIZES.

    Hi all
Wondered if anyone has had a problem with increased files sizes when opening a document up in Photoshop? Anything i open up is increased by two thirds  in file size and i've no idea why ( e.g..8MB doc opens as 24MB doc)
What is even more strange is that it won't let me reduce a  file size to anything under 1MB.
Has anyone ever come across this problem?...would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Bri

    Hey Noel
    Fair Play.
    This is what is happening.
I’ve got a standard JPEG file that viewed in Explorer and Bridge reads as a 2.70MB (2838,796 bytes) file. Pixel dimensions 797x1000. Document size  6.75 x 8.47cm .Res 300 PPI.
When I open it in CS4 it reads 2.28MB. (This is the first thing I don’t understand)
Either way my simple( so I thought ) objective is to decrease the file size.
In the image size box I have re-set the resolution to 72ppi as I just need to post the image on a Website. My before and after calculations in the image Panel reads (was 2.28MB...now 134.3k)
Great! .this is what I want, However..... when I ‘save as’ and the JPEG compression box appears it has suddenly increased the file to 1.8MB Large file...and only allows me to reduce it to 1.7MB small file.
Admittedly this is not my area of expertise....I’m doing something wrong so any pointers would be much appreciated.

  • Save as Reduced Size PDF and Save as Optimized PDF do not reduce the file size.  What gives?

Save as Reduced Size PDF and Save as Optimized PDF do not reduce the file size.  What gives?  I used Acrobat 9 to do this for a long time.  I recently received new laptop loaded with with Acrobat 10 and it does not work the same.  I typically scan 8-10 pages of receipts, combine the files in Acrobat, and then optimize to reduce the size so I can upload with my expense report.  Typically, my files were reduced to 200-400 KB.  I have a 2 MB file that will not reduce at all.

Bernd, thank you for your attempt to help but the option dialog windows do not contain the same options.  There are numerous other posts on this forum about this issue and there is no answer.  Clearly, there is an issue.  I have submitted this issue to our internal help desk.

  • Increase File Size

After converting CR2 Raw files to Jpeg the size of the files is too small. How if possible Can one increase file size in Elements 9? Thanks

Why on earth do you want to have "larger" files?
JPG uses compression to reduce the size of the resulting files.  If you're concerned about the picture quality because of JPG's lossy compression method, simply set the JPG "Quality" setting to its maximum.

  • Hi All, Can I access Adobe reader internal variables in my pdf? for example location, file size, creator etc.

Hi All, Can I access Adobe reader internal variables in my pdf? for example location, file size, creator etc. I want to create a hyperlink in my pdf $Location/another.pdf?

    Thanks Gilad.
let me rephrase my requirement. I have a group of pdf files where one pdf has hyperlinks to the other pdfs
    parent.pdf
    -- child1.pdf
    -- child2.pdf
when I click on the child hyperlink I want the child.pdf to be displayed in another window/reader
If I have the hyperlink as file:./child1.pdf it does not work. It needs a complete path.
So when I create this file in MSWord first, Can I artificially create a placeholder for the directory and append the child.pdf?
suppose the properties say Location = /tmp/pdfs/
can I have in the hyperlink something like file:/$Location/child.pdf and when reader is used it substitutes the url
    so I get file:/tmp/pdfs/child.pdf
    Hope I explained this.
    thanks
    -Francis
OK, let me have a very simple requirement. Can I create a pdf and when I open it
there is one line that says - This File is in xxx directory.
where xxx is the directory name where the file is. If I have the file in /tmp then it should say This file is in /tmp directory
and if I copy it to /other then open it, it should say This file is in /other directory.

  • Acrobat 7.0.9: Optimizing PDF increases file size?

Audit Space Usage in the Optimize dialog shows "Color Spaces" ballooning from 0.8 MB to 22 MB when a PDF is optimized (goes from 3% of the file size to 58%). File size increases from 23.8 MB to 35.6 MB.
What exactly is happening, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks for any info.

    Hey, Jon
    Interesting...
Original file (300 dpi CMYK images) 23.8 MB
    Images 19 MB
    Color Spaces 0.8 MB
Optimize with flattening (72 dpi images, low quality) 68.7 MB
    Images 49 MB
    Color Spaces 18 MB
Optimize without flattening (72 dpi images, low quality) 68.2 MB
    Images 48 MB
    Color Spaces 18 MB
Not sure why color spaces are down to 18 MB from 22 MB, I used a preset that I THOUGHT was the same one I used yesterday. Regardless, it's bizarre that both images and color spaces are getting huge when optimized.
I used Create PDF from Multiple Files to bring in a bunch of pages, but I'm reasonably sure that all those files were already flattened before I brought them in.
I'll file that transparency tip for next time though, you never know when it might come up.
    Thanks.

  • Reduce File Size and Optimise PDF both increase file size

    Hi All
I have exported a pdf (our college mag) at smallest file size from Indesign CS4 for online use. The problem is the resultant file size is a little under 19Mb. Using both or either Reduce File Size or Optimise functions simply result in an increase to 22Mb. The document is packed with images however I would have thought one or both of these processes would have helped reduce the file size to a more manageable download file size.
A pdf is also produced to go to print so simply compressing all images prior to imcuding them in Indesign is not a preferable option - this would mean creating two separate Indesign documents, something which I would rather avoid if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.
The file reside here if anyone cares to take a look http://www.ayrcoll.ac.uk/index.php?name=UpDownload&req=viewdownload&cid=11&orderby=dateD  It's the latest release (September 09)
    Thanks

You might want to do an audit of the PDF (button in PDF Optimizer) and try to figure out what the various parts are. It shows 58% is content streams (sorry, but I am not sure what that is), 26% is overhead, and only 12.7% is graphics. Since you are not storing bookmarks and such, you might want to try going back to ID and printing to the Adobe PDF printer for a comparison. It may be one technique is more efficient than the other.
When I used the optimizer, the file did get larger. When I used Reduce File Size, it got slightly smaller. The key may be in figuring out what the various parts are from the audit. You might try copying one page of ID to a new document and play with various versions - different fonts (all were embedded and that is probably best), variations on graphics, etc. That is all I can suggest since I would simply be playing with different ways to produce the document and looking at what is causing the bloat. When the Images are only 12.7% and the fonts less than 1%, there is something going on to produce the size, and those 2 are typically the killers. I would mention tags that tend to bloat, but you do not have any (normally used for assessibility).
You might want to try some of the preflight checks to find issues. I did the transparency check and got 170 instances in 22 pages. Flattening the page may help. There were some pages that seemed to be very bad. However, I did not get a big file size reduction. I did not get a lot of improvement by printing to a new PDF either. Certain pages seem to be part of the bloat problem. The print took a long time around pages 11 and 22.
One troubleshooting technique would be extract pages to separate files and look at the details of each page to see what is causing the issue.
    Need to go. Good luck.

  • Adding Bates numbers to PDFs increases file size by 10x - How to keep original size?

I have a lot of email texts that I converted from Word to PDF and then Bates numbered.
However, Bates numbering made each email's file size go from about 50kb to 500kb.
Once I combine these larger files for uploading to a docket, at the maximum allowable file size is 4 Mb, I can put together only 8-10 emails at a time.  What to do to keep the original file size small when Bates numbering?

    Hi paulu40695891,
Yes, there is a significant increase in the file size when one applies bates numbering to the pdf and saves it.
A workaround for this issue would be to save the pdf file again as reduced size pdf. (File -> Save as other -> Reduced Size PDF. )
Does that helps with your issue? Please revert back for any further query or assistance.

  • PDF annotation(comments) in acrobat increase file size rather than reader

    Hi,
When I annotating(comments) files in Acrobat Professional(7 or 9) will increase the file size where as if I open the same file in adobe reader I can easily edit the page within short times,Please suggest what is the mechanism used in Acrobat.
    Regards,

    Hi MohamedFaisal,
I am not sure, if i understood you correctly. The file size grows big in Acrobat and when the same file is opened in Reader the size is less?
Also, please help us with the details mentioned below
    1) Exact version of Acrobat being used
    2) Exact version of Adobe Reader being used
    3) Size difference, when opened in Acrobat Vs When opened in Reader.
    4) How was the file Created.

  • QT X conversion increases file size

Now this maybe something that all versions of QT did but I never used QT before for converting movies as it took so **** long,I always used Visualhub.
I thought I'd give QT X a try and the speed seems to have improved but it increased the file size to almost double using the iphone optimization.
Space on an iphone/ipod is at a premium and they go and engineer a conversion that doubles the file size.
What is the point of that?
If I do the same conversion using VisualHub the file size stays the same.
Surely apple can do better than that

Here is the reply that I could swear I saw in this thread yesterday. It seems to have disappeared somehow...
    MacRicco wrote:
LZW compression does not work on 16 bit TIFFs, it was never intended for this format. The TIFF format started out as 8 bit only together with LZW.
Basically all image compression exploits sequences of equal pixels. The chances of two pixels being equal goes to zero when increasing the resolution. After that you only add the overhead of the bookkeeping tables of the compression itself.

  • Acrobat 9 Typewriter increasing file size

I have scanned forms that I need to edit with the Typewriter tool in Acrobat 9 Pro - basically I just need to add a date to the form and then e-mail it.  Evidently I have accidentally clicked some box that I did not want to click, because now when I edit the one-page form (about 70k before editing) and type in any data whatsoever using the Typewriter tool, then save the form, the file balloons to anywhere from 0.6 to 0.9 MB.  Which is crazy, and too large for me to submit.
Right now what I'm having to do is edit the form, save it, print it, and re-scan it.  This is making me nuts.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have tried Reduce File Size, the Optimizer, and downsampling, but nothing has worked.  I can't make the file small enough to make a difference.
    Thanks,
    Beth

    Base - 14 fonts
Standard Type 1 Fonts (Standard 14 Fonts)
Fourteen typefaces—known as the standard 14 fonts—have a special significance in PDF documents:
Times (v3) (in regular, italic, bold, and bold italic)
Courier (in regular, oblique, bold and bold oblique)
Helvetica (v3) (in regular, oblique, bold and bold oblique)
    Symbol
    Zapf Dingbats
These fonts are sometimes called the base fourteen fonts.[34] These fonts, or suitable substitute fonts with the same metrics, must always be available in all PDF readers and so need not be embedded in a PDF.[35] PDF viewers must know about the metrics of these fonts. Other fonts may be substituted if they are not embedded in a PDF.
Helvetica was developed in 1957 by Linotype. Arial was Monotype's attempt to make a font that looked like Helvetica (but without paying licensing fees) and was designed in 1982.
Microsoft didn't want to pay Linotype licensing fees to use Helvetica so it went instead with the cheaper Arial.
Arial is held in disregard by many professional typographers and type enthusiasts, for reasons relating to its similarity to other typefaces and the involvement of Microsoft in its development and distribution.[7] It is reinforced by Arial's apparent status as a de facto Helvetica stand-in, but without paying royalties, or credit, to Helvetica. Arial's glyph widths are nearly identical to those of Helvetica,[7][26] rather than Monotype Grotesque, on which Arial is otherwise based.[7] "But to an experienced designer," writes typographer Mark Simonson, using Arial "was like asking for Jimmy Stewart and getting Rich Little."

  • Air 3.9 for iOS - Increased file size of the executable?

    Hi,
I've just exported a new release of my app with the new Air 3.9 SDK.
I've discovered that the file size of the .ipa is increased of 9MB (before it was 30, now it's 39...)
Looking into the Payload, I've found that the exutable itself is increased from 7 MB to 30 MB...
Is that possibile? Or am I doing something wrong?
    I'm on FLEX SDK,
This is the adt command line (part of it):
    adt

        -target
        ipa-app-store
        -hideAneLibSymbols
        yes
        -storetype

    -swf-version=22 -allow-source-path-overlap=true
    -optimize=true
    Thanks

I would like to add that, packaging in -XVerbose mode, I found that some frameworks have been added to the package like MapKit. I'm using some ANEs, but none of them uses a MapKit framework.
Anyone know which are the frameworks actually being embedded inside the iOS packaging?
    Thanks

  • Preview: Save as PDF while approximately keeping the file size ?

    Hello!
I know that several good discussions took place about the way to reduce the file size when saving (as) a PDF from the application Preview.
    I tried:
    • the default poor quality "Reduce File Size" preset filter,
    • the additional filters provided by Jérôme Colas (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6250289)
    • the "Compress PDF Workflow 4.0" that reenables feature for Leopard (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html)
Has anyone come across a method to _keep in about the *original size*_ of the original Adobe PDF ?
When saving a 3 MB PDF with Preview, I see it increase to 80 MB, so that dramatically reducing it to 40MB is not really satisfying, is it?
Thank you in advance for any suggestion !

  • Reduced frame size results in increased file size (?!)

    Hello
I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
I exported from FinalCut into a QuickTime file, the file size is 485MB.
Then I used QuickTIme Pro to change the movie into the above frame size, and add a letter box.
The resulting file is over 6GB in files size! How can this be? I used no compression and these settings: no compression, millions of colours, Best Quality, Apple Lossless sound, 48.000MHz, Mono.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash).
Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.

I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
According to a Viddler "staff" member on their forum, the player is 545x408. Therefore I would try one of the following:
544x408 (4:3 aspect) 544x306 (16:9 aspect) (closest match disregarding macro blocks)
    512x384 (4:3 aspect) 512x288 (16:9 aspect) (long file up-scaling macro-blocked)
    576x432 (4:3 aspect) 576x324 (16:9 aspect) (short file down-scaling macro-blocked)
To me, a "QuickTime file" is anything you can stuff into an MOV file container, or a more loose definition, anything compatible with the QT Player and currently installed QT components. With regard to going from 485 MBs to 6 GBs, your file size is directly related to the total (audio + video) data rate used for compression. Not compressing a video makes it bigger while the higher the compression, the smaller the file.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash). Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.
Since the target for the Flash target conversion is 448 kbps (400 kbps video + 48 kbps audio), the same staff member recommended H.264 multi-pass video compression at 768 kbps and AAC mono audio compression at 64 kbps with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. Splitting the difference between the staff recommendation and your apparent worry about quality loss during re-compression, I would suggest this as a maximum level of compression and likely try a total data rate in the 1500-1600 kbps range which should yield something on the order of 12.25 MBs/min for output for initial tests. You can, of course adjust rates up or down depending on the duration of your file upload in order to meet the 500 MB limit and satisfy quality considerations.
