PDF output from InDesign

I have a low res image on my Indesign CS5 page, it has some effects applied to it. It is low res in that it is a comp from a stock site, we don't purchase until certain approvals have been made. Anyway, no matter what I do when I export the PDF it won't show up.. any ideas as to what may be wrong? I've never had trouble using this workflow before, have tried resaving/updating the image in photoshop, changing it's name, exporting with all different levels of quality via InDesign..

If you need an urgent workaround, you could probably place a screenshot of the image (since it's low-res anyway) to create the PDF.  Though I don't know if the problem will go away when you buy the high-res file.
Maybe try downloading the comp again too in case there was something wrong with the file.

  • Is any one else have issues with interactive PDF output from InDesign CC (2014)

I am currently trying to produce a document with a level of interactivity I have achieved many times before.
The interactivity is just a web style menu, show/hide the menu shows button set one, clicking on those shows a second set of buttons, and clicking in one of those goes to destination page and hides all menu buttons once more.
When output from ID CC 2014 the result is loads of missing buttons and no working menu.
Its not a corrupt ID file. I tried a brand new empty file, recreated basic structure with simple one state buttons and achieved similarly useless results.
If I back save using IDML and open in CS5, export from there, it works beautifully, so problem is not as many have been recently, to do with Acrobat browsers.
If I back save and open in InDesign CC (not 2014), export from there, it doesn't work, so problem is shared there!
Anybody any suggestions? Experienced similar and found a cure?
    SOLVED BY A COLLEAGUE:
You can (no longer) use full stops/decimal points in button naming. Menu was hierarchically labelled as 1, (1.1, 1.2), (1.1.1, 1.1.2) etc.
Renamed 1_1, 1_1_2 etc and all functionality has returned. Why you could and now you can't, who knows!
Hope this helps you if you stumble across here with the same issue.

    Thank you for reporting this.
I would consider this a bug in InDesign CC v9.x and v10.x and would report it:

  • PDFs exported from InDesign cannot be printed

Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document or add just text from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd.
**I also posted this in the InDesign thread but was asked to post it here too. I tried printing the document using Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader with no luck. We tried printing directly from InDesign but it is inconsistent, sometimes it will print but most of the time it does not.

Hmm. Yeah. The ID forum may be more help. Especially if it's also a problem in ID.
My first suspect would be corrupt fonts or possibly an image file. Can you create a blank ID file with no text (maybe insert just an image or something that isn't on any of the other ID files) pdf it and print it?

  • How can I maintain multiple white spaces in a PDF written from InDesign?

I need to have 2 white spaces maintained (within a part #) in the PDF I write, but when I open in Acrobat it converts it to one space.
I've tried word spaces, set spaces and applying "no color" to a placeholder character and nothing is working!
    Any ideas or suggestions?

I am talking about normal white space. Multiple fixed widt spaces are not a problem. How the space is handled in a PDF depends on how it is created.

It may not be a great idea to use multiple spaces, but it certainly is not prohibited and sometimes is necessary -- you might want a 2em space, or a thin space before and after a tab you underline in a form.
I'm able to select the multiple spaces just fine in Acrobat 9 using the text touch-up tool.

  • PDF Bookmarks - Change Default Width When Creating PDF File from InDesign

When creating a PDF file (from Indesign CS4) I automatically create the PDF bookmarks based on the InDesign document's Table of Contents.
But by default the width in the bookmarks is always set at "Fit Page".
Is there a way to change the default to "Fit Width" in Indesign before the PDF is created?
It's too much trouble to change every bookmark in the PDF after it's created.
Thanks for any help in advance!

Thanks, Steve. I have actually previously done what "fogharty" suggests and it does work if I want to set the pages to "fit width" or a variety of other options. However, none of the options is inherit zoom which is what I, and many other from the sound of the thread, need and want. We want to respect our end users--not dictate how they must view our PDFs. Hopefully, Adobe will listen and make this option available soon.

  • "Save as pdf" button from InDesign

Is it possible to make a "save as pdf" button from InDesign ?
    Best regards, Mette Louise

Well, I'd say that, but if the button is to run Acrobat JavaScript it comes back to an Acrobat forum. But my question is: what would it do? The file is already a PDF.

Facing challenges during creation of replica of .IDF file/Pdf output from 4.7 system into of Adobe forms in ECC 6.0 system.
If anybody has easy way to make those forms...
    Please suggest...

    Hi Shabeer,
the first thing is that you are running on a very very low RAM.
For ECC 6.0 with dual stack SAP System to run you should have atleast 4 GB of RAM.
For your Dispatcher issue kindly check the status of your Oracle database and the connection from SAP To Database.
You can check the oracle status using brtools utility.

  • PDF Files from InDesign much larger than Quark- Distiller, why?

We've recently switched our publishing workflow for one of our pubs from Quark to InDesign, and are having issues with PDFs being really large. Previously, the pub would be PS'd out of QXP6.52 and then ran through our Distiller service at Press Ready quality settings. The resulting PDF files were 4-6mb (This is only a 2-page pub).
Now, moving to InDesign, we PDF directly from InDesign (or I've also tried PSing and then Distilling), and using Press Ready Quality settings still -- the resultant PDF files are 15-16mb. Can anyone theorize as to what would create such a large difference between the two?
This is using a few issues of the pub - not just one instance, as well.
    Thanks

    7. Yes, the file and links are using transparency.
    This is probably the answer.
Recreate the page in InDesign with no transparency (as a test). This means all links are tiff or eps. No use of opacity or blend modes. No drop shadows.
This is how it would have been in Quark 6, which did not support transparency (the newer kind anyway)
Note: if you had overlying drop shadows in Quark 6 they would have had to have been bitmap tiffs.
I also should mention: transparency is a good thing. There may be a way to get the file size down without removing transparency. Possibly you could use Acrobat to do this.
Also note I posted a couple of updates on my previous post, they may or may not be relevant.

  • Previews error in Bridge on PDFs exported from InDesign

When I export a PDF from InDesign CS5 and look at the file preview in Bridge it always reveals the two first pages of the PDF only.
It doesn't matter how many pages the PDF really has, it always just shows 2 in the preview in Bridge. While this may sound as a problem connected to Bridge, I think it is connected to the export process in InDesign. PDFs with several pages generated with other applications are displayed with their correct page numbers in the preview in Bridge.
I've had this problem since I first installed CS5 on my Macs.
If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful!
    Regards,
    Eivind

It happens to ALL my PDFs created from InDesign, and on both my Macs. I've also seen other Macs that have the same problem.
If, however, I do change the number of preview pages displayed on the INDD file, this actually carries across to the PDFs that I export too.
Another weird consequence is that if I open one of those PDFs in PS and save a page as a JPG, that JPG's preview in Bridge is also shown as if it consisted of 2 pages.
I have upgraded my OS several times (it's now the newest OS X version available), and it hasn't helped. I have also cleared out everything Adobe on my Mac, preferences and all, and re-installed it – it didn't help.
Adobe support acknowleged that it was a bug, but couldn't reproduce it so they couldn't help. Updates to CS5 has not fixed it.
I was sort of hoping someone else here had encountered the same problem and figured out a fix, or that they could tell me if it was fixed in CS5.5.
I thought maybe it was connected to the language settings in my OS since I've seen it on several Macs set to Norwegian, but the guy on Adobe support had a set up with Norwegian language, and apparently he didn't have same problem.

  • The difference of pdf export from Indesign CS3 and other Indesign version

    Hi,
When I am exporting pdf of an Illustrator eps file from Indesign CS2 or CS4 etc.. i am getting the proper output as its there in illustrator, but when I am loading the same Image in CS3 and exporting pdf its not producing the proper output. Here I have my screen shots.
    Cs3
    other versions
    awaiting your reply
    Thanks in advance
    Biju Mathew.

You have to educate your customer: EPS is an outdated and lossy file type because it does neither support transparency nor color management and should be avoided to be used with InDesign or Photoshop or Illustrator.
I don't understand, why so many insist in using EPS?

  • Printing pdf exported from InDesign

When I print a pdf that I've exported from InDesign some of the graphic boxes or even text boxes that have effects, show up. They appear as a box with a subtle color a bit lighter than the background color of my design. These boxes do not show up on screen even when [view overprint] is on. The graphics are usually created or edited in photoshop with a transparent background so that only the image I want will be transfered to InDesign. Please HELP!

Thanks Daniel but this did not work for me perhaps because the following step was greyed out for me so I wasn't able to complete all the steps. I did try Claudia's advice to print image, that worked but it's getting a bit pixilated.
File > Print, and under Output, choose Composite CMYK, and CHECK the ?Simulate Overprint? checkbox. Under Advanced, select your all-raster flattener.
Maybe it's the way I created my original document, not sure.
    Thanks anyway!

  • TIF output from InDesign

Pre purchase question regarding InDesign. I am doing simple layout, which have generally done in Photoshop, for output to an inket printer one page at a time. I am considering purchasing InDesign to do this. Is it possible to output individual pages from InDesign as TIF files? If so can you specify the resolution and output color space as well as color space conversion settings? Thanks.

    P Spier wrote:
InDesign certainly has much better typography than Photoshop, and better control over placing and cropping/scaling multiple images, in my opinion, because that's what it is designed to do. Are you certain the RIP won't accept PDF data? I didn't see anything on the website that discussed file formats
I really appreciate your thoughts on this thought -- I want to do it the best way possible -- though it seems like there is no best way given the issues.
There is one line of type, so this is not about the typography -- though in the past I have done similar projects with more type which has been fine with the files created in PS and print with this RIP and printer. It's much more about the photography. I appreciate InDesign may be better for placing multiple images that is why I have been thinking about buying it to do this. I used to do this work with another page layout program and to get the output ripped those files with PS to create a TIF I could print. Ugh! I saw the type was degraded too, though ok for that, and that is partly why I switched to doing this in PS.
ImagePrint, per my post above, will not print PDF files unless I add the optional print through application (additional cost) and then border less printing is not supported (want borderless).
Are all of the images in the same color space? If not it might make more sense to composite the pages in the RIP itself, if you can. The problem with using a raster format, even converting a high quality PDF exported from ID, is that you degrade the type.
    Peter
Most of the images are in Adobe 1998 but some are in ProPhoto RGB (coming from Lightroom) and in any case will convert them all to Adobe 1998 when placing them in PS files. I don't think the layout tools in the RIP, while quite good, are nearly as good as what I can do with PS.
Thanks! Any more thoughts greatly appreciated.
