PDF Portfolio compatible on PC and Mac?

Hello,
I have a very large InDesign file that I will need to seperate into individual PDF files.
I've never used PDF Portfolio before, but have seen some samples and love how it allows 'interconnectivity' between multiple PDF files.
My end-users are on PC and Mac platforms. I am on a PC system. Would my PDF portfolio work on a Mac?
Also, some end-users use extremely old versions of Acrobat. I imagine that the 'PDF Portfolio' may not work on them. Will they still be able to view the individual PDF files?
Delivery method is the files will be burned onto a CD.
Thanks!

With a Mac, it is usually not required to delete an Apple application before re-installing the app if needed. You can re-install the app over the existing, and the same applies to an app provided as a bundle - installed via drag and drop to your hard drive from a mounted disk image after the app was downloaded instead of being installed with an installer. Most 3rd party apps for the Mac are made available and installed as a bundle.
Have you run Software Update located at System Preferences > Software Update since purchasing your Mac?
If so and any update that was available has been installed, try running Disk First Aid which will require booting your Mac from the Snow Leopard install disc included with your Mac purchase. This link provides instructions for doing so.

  • PDF Portfolio combatibility with apple and accessibility

Our office thought PDF portfolios were the way to go for our large manuals that we want available online for readers to view and print. We are running into many problems, however.
    1. Are PDF portfolios truly accessible to screen readers? I set the preference to open in files mode; however, when I publish the PDF portfolio to our web, a coworker opened it into preview mode.
    2. Are PDF portfolios compatible with apple products? Another coworker opened the portfolio off our web, and it only showed the first PDF in the portfolio. There were no options to see others or search or anything.
I've been trying to research online, but I am getting nowhere. Basically what I've found was that the user needs to have Adobe Reader installed (on their iPad, Mac, iPhone, etc.) in order to view. It says to save the setting to open all portfolios in files mode, but that does not seem to carry with the portfolio - just the user's computer who changed the setting.
    Extremely frustrated forms/records manager

That's a complete PITA, then. Our local government, for example, commonly
puts up PDF portfolios on their web site which consist of scans of
multiple written responses to planning submissions bundled together into a
PDF portfolio. Without the thumbnails of each contained PDF in the
portfolio, it is impossible read anything other than the first PDF in the
portfolio. Have a look for example, at
    http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/22343/DV307_Submissions_1-20_1.37 MB.pdf.
All submissions in this portfolio can be accessed without any problem
using Reader 9.4.3 for Windows, but with Reader 9.4.3 for Linux, only the
first submission in the document can be accessed.
There is no AR9.4.3 for Linux: do you mean AR9.4.2?
Anyhow my recommendation under Linux would be to stick with AR9.3.4.
I've just checked at my end and it has no problem with your
    sample portfolio.

  • No "PDF Portfolio task pane" on Intel Mac!!!

Acrobat 9 Pro has different behaviors between Intel Mac and PowerPC Mac !!!
On Intel Mac, I cannot change the default layout of any PDF Portfolios, because the "PDF Portfolio task pane" doesn't show, so there's no way to touch the "CHOOSE A LAYOUT" button.
But on PowerPC Mac, everything is fine.
I think it's a serious bug which only affect Intel Mac. Please confirm this.
    Thanks.
(I attached screenshot of new created PDF Portfolio window under Intel Mac and PowerPC Mac)

    Hi, Steve
I just found the key to trigger this "bug". In Acrobat or Reader's Preferences, choose "International", and there's a "Choose Font" option. I can choose between "Application Default Font" and "GB18030 compliant Font" (I don't know if this later GB18030 option shows in non-Chinese environment).
If I choose the GB18030 option, I won't see the "PDF Portfolio task pane". I think I don't need this option, so I recover the old settings. (Obviously my Acrobat system files are not broken, but I cannot explain why simply delete all preferences in my home directory didn't work -- maybe this option are not stored in my home directory).

  • Pdf portfolio source file name and date in file details

Is it possible to import the source file name and extension as well as the source file created date in the portfolio file details?  Need to document source to portfolio in working with 3rd parties that will only have the original source.  Need to document what was converted into pdf as not all files in a directory will successfully convert to pdf.  Sometimes need to convert 100's of files.  Manual entry is inefficient.  the file names and modified dates are displayed on the Combine Files dialog.  is there a way to capture the detail on that page?

I don't need the detail of when the pdf was added to the portfolio.  I
need know which dwg or jpg or word file was converted and the original
created date of that file for control of information.
That is impossible; sorry. For some *very specific* types of conversion to PDF the pdfx:SourceModified XMP tag will be set to show the last-modification date of the source file (for example DOCX files converted using MS Word), but there will never be a human-readable record of the source filename or its creation date unless you have manually added them as document XMP properties after conversion (this is what the "Custom Properties" dialog is for). To embed source data automatically would raise no end of privacy and security problems for customers, who most certainly do NOT want their recipients seeing details of internal documents.
Without writing a plugin there's no access to the internal workflow of the Combine Files dialog, so you cannot use a script to read the names and dates of the files *before* conversion and store them automatically in the new PDF Portfolio's Fields array.

  • PDF Portfolio with Index Doc (and links)?

    Hello all.
I'm a newbie at Porfolios, and have version 9 on windows. I also have version 10 at work.
I want to take an excel spreadsheet (converted to pdf) and make it a main index in my portfolio; whereas when someone clicks on the index, it starts at a first page; allowing them to view the list of assets, and then click an asset name (link) which takes them to a sub file in a sub folder, or just a sub file. I don't think I ever go more than 2 link clicks to get to the bottom of the tree.
I was able to create the index, and links, and on both 9 and 10 (windows) it follows the links nicely.
The problem? There's no logical button or menu choice that I can find which takes me back to the main index after I've hit the bottom of the tree.
    Thoughts?

I don't need the detail of when the pdf was added to the portfolio.  I
need know which dwg or jpg or word file was converted and the original
created date of that file for control of information.

  • Make PDF portfolio compatible for editing with earlier versions of Acrobat

I've built a PDF portfolio in Acrobat Pro X and then sent it to someone running Reader v9 and they can't edit it (and need to). Is there a way to save the PDF portfolio down so they can edit it?
Why does Adobe make this so difficult?

PDF Portfolios are based on Flash. It's impossible to view them without Flash. In Acrobat/Reader 9 and X, Flash was built in. In Acrobat/Reader XI, it must be downloaded for security reasons. (I believe the reasoning is that, because only a minority of Acrobat/Reader users use PDF Portfolios or features which require Flash, it's not wise to expect people to do the frequent security updates in Acrobat/Reader that Flash requires.)

  • Problems reading PDF files with i Pad and Mac with 10.8.3 Mountain Lion OS

I assume InDesign uses the Acrobat XI resources to generate the exported PDFs.
I have many 1-7 page articles from which I created PDFs via the export function in ID. They all read OK on PC/Apple/Linux based computers.
I assembled all of the articles into one 50 page document in ID and again exported the large file as a PDF.
Several of the articles inside the large document now exhibit problems when viewed on an i Pad or a Mac running OS 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion). PC and Linux do not have this problem.
The problems are, to quote my subscriber: "each paragraph starts with a 'dollar' sign instead of 'Th'. Later the 'Dollar' symbol changes to ' " '. The same thing happens in the Piston Ring article. This doesn't happen on the original PDF files.
Opening the files in Acrobat Pro XI to look for differences does not discover anything although I assume the problem is somewhere in the font files.
    Any suggestions?

I've asked the question about the versions and producers of the PDF reader software he is using. I'll be back when that answer comes in.
I was afraid that Adobe might not use code identical to Acrobat Pro XI to generate PDFs in InDesign. I may have to 'print' to Acrobat and see if that generates a trouble-free PDF.

  • Burning a dvd of photos compatible with pc and mac

I don't know if this is the correct forum or not.... can someone direct me on how to burn a dvd of pics and videos that is compatible with both a pc and a mac. i exported the photos to a folder on my desktop and have tried to burn with finder, and when i try the disk in a pc there are no thumbnails, nor does the pc have the capability of opening the photos. help!

I am also having this problem. I have a dvd of jpeg's burnt on a mac that I received from my photographer. I can open the disc on my mac, and have copied it using disc utility, but can play neither the original or the copied dvd on my husbands pc (using sony DVD+R). Windows says the dvd is blank and asks if I want to format it. I have the same problem with DVD's of data burnt on friends macbook pro, none are recognised as having any data on them by my husbands dell laptop running windows xp.
Would love a solution to this problem, as 1 year ago I could burn data DVD's from this same computer and play them on that same pc.

  • Desktop publishing software compatible with windows and mac?

I am trying to help the kids at my daughter's school produce their own newspaper.
Apart from Word (which I can't get to do what I want!) is there anything out there compatible with both operating systems. The school PCs have MS Publisher 2003 installed. I am working on a mac using Quark and InDesign. I created the last newspaper for them but I'd like the kids to get more involved if possible and enable them to have some input when it comes to creating it. Other than having to do it myself or even worse invite 60 kids into my home is there anything out there?!!!

    Hi Grace,
if you use QuarkXPress 7 or 8, you can actually legally install/activate *the same* license *on two* machines, even cross-platform. You are just allowed to use one installation concurrently.
So you could test it on Windows and if the student like it, a student copy is extremely cheap.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards
    Matthias

  • Possible to sync PDF/ePub files between iOS and Mac App?

I have some ePubs and PDF books I'd like to stay in sync between my Mac and my iOS devices.
If I drag/drop a book into my iBooks application, it doesn't appear anywhere on my iOS device. Same result if I were to sync a PDF/ePub to my iBooks iOS app.
Are they only suposed to stay in sync with purchases made from the store? Is there prerequisite stuff that I need to do to keep the two Apps in sync?
    Am I missing something?

    Anyone???

  • InDesign documents, exported to .pdfs then printed on PC and Mac laser printers - what are best settings?

Our in-house creative department produces a lot of materials that are no longer going to our commercial printer.
Projects are created in Adobe InDesign, exported as .pdfs and stored on a site, where marketing partners can then download the .pdfs and print.
Usually from laser printers, usually pcs.
I would appreciate any advice on choosing settings for the .pdf (export) to help manage color etc.
    thank you

If you are printing to laser printers by people that are not knowledgeable about color settings and device capabilities. I would not use Color Management. I would stick to something simple like Press Quality so that all the fonts used in your document will be embedded into the pdf so that you do not have to worry if the person printing the file has the fonts used in creating the documents.

  • Spreadsheets not compatible between iPad and Mac

I have created a spreadsheet on my Mac (10.6.5) and transferred it to my iPad (4.2.1).
It is not possible anymore on my iPad to add a Diagram using an existing table. Besides that cells are locked with their format which cannot be changed: if it is for numbers no text can be entered.
    Is this a known issue?

Numbers on Mac and iPad are not 100% identical. The support article below lists some of the differences you can expect when transferring from Mac to iPad:

  • Accessibility and Pdf Portfolios

Everything we put on the Internet must be ADA compliant. There was some discussion with previous versions of LiveCycle forms inside a PDF portfolio possibly not being compliant because of the navigation issues inside the portfolio itself. Does anyone know if a pdf portfolio is ADA compliant and compatible with JAWS reader? We have several application forms which are over 20 pages long. They have designed the application as one document with several forms that might be needed by our clients.
My thought is that a portfolio would be a more efficient package to put all the ADA forms into so that they client can only fill out those that are needed.
So my question is, is the portfolio itself ADA accessible? Or how can I make it so. Does anyone know?

I have posted this question there before and didn't receive an answer. Since a portfolio is the only way to combine multiple LiveCycle pdfs, my hope was that someone on the LiveCycle forum would know the answer.

  • Please Help Exporting PDF Portfolio and Black Background turns White

I am creating a PDF Portfolio in Adobe InDesign and I created a black background using the steps below. When I export the document into PDF form, the background turns to white.
I followed these steps to make my background black:
"Window>Color>Swatches to bring up the Swatches panel and double-click the Paper swatch. Change the Color Mode to RGB and move the Red, Green, and Blue sliders to 0 to change the swatch to Black. Click OK."
Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You misunderstand what paper is for. Paper is quite simply the absense of ink or color.
By changing it, all you've done is show what something will look like printed on black paper. If you really want a black background you'll need to draw a frame, fill it with black and place it on the master page on it's own bottom layer. Lock the layer to prevent any problems.

  • Can I use Adobe PDF plugin in Chrome on a Mac?

    I'm on a Mac.
I would like to use the Adobe Reader PDF viewer in Chrome instead of the built-in Chrome PDF viewer.
I went to Chrome:Plugins to disable the Chrome PDF viewer, but noticed that the Adobe Reader PDF plugin is not there.
I then went to Library/Internet Plug-ins and I do see the AdobePDFViewer.plugin file.
Is the Adobe PDF Viewer compatible with Chrome on Mac?
