PDF Preview, Win7 64-bit Explorer

Hi
Does anyone have a solution to the problem of not being able to view the content of PDFs in Large or Extra Large mode on a Windows 7 (Enterprise SP1) 64-bit system?  I've tried installing Reader 10.0.0, 10.1.4, and 11 - all result in displaying the default PDF icon.
I regularly have thousands of files to review, JPG and TIF work fine in this mode so why not PDF?  I've researched elsewhere and there's a solution that involves changing a registry setting - I think it was HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC1 93}.  But my system already had the value that the solution was recommending
And there was another one that suggested deleting registry keys (I think HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.7) and Repairing the Reader installation - but that didn't work either
Any ideas out there?
Cheers

  • Error in PDF preview Handler in Windows Explorer x32

I'm running Windows 7, 32 bit. and I get this error when trying to view a pdf in the preview pane "Error in PDF Preview Handler". I have Adobe Reader X installed, and have re-installed it with no  help.
I've read many problems about this, but everyone else is running 64 bit. I'm running 32.
    Any help please. Thank you

    Yes - sorry !
I solved my problem with the exchange of the UNC path against drive letters for the folders in
Administration - System initialisation - General settings - Tab Path
    Before:
    sbo-data\ruk\attachemnts
After: E:\ruk\attachements (E: is a local drive of the server and we run B1 via Windows Terminal Client on the same machine)
Before I did this, I checked the user rights on the paths, checked the DNS, hosts file, etc.

  • PDF preview Win7 Exp.for good_no new load all the time

Is it possible to set up thumbnails of PDF files so they do not re-load by opening folders with these files? Or it has to do with Adobe Reader and his organization? It can be set somewhere in Settings?
It's time consuming with dozens of files.
    see here http://imageshack.com/a/img607/7538/ctq0.jpg
In doing so, I can see that the os somewhere stores in some cache, because it makes only after pc restart.
    Thanks for the advice

    Quit Preview.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following.
    Containers/com.apple.Preview
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist

    Hi Guys ,
We are facing a serious issue with Windows 8 and Adobe PDF Preview Handler . We are using the PDFPrevHndlr.dll from Adobe to show PDF Previews in our application. It is working fine in Windows 7 and Vista and for some reason it is not working in Windows 8.1 64 bit machines after upgrading to Adobe Pro 10.0.10 .  Please help us figure out what is the root cause of this issue .
During a close analysis we have found that the PrevHost.exe( Windows component ) is failing soon after it is being invoked . Any help in this is much appreciated.

  • Again after last patch: Windows 64 - PDF preview handler not working

Adobe's PDF preview handler doesn't work unter Windows XP/Vista/7 64 bit. Because of that PDF preview e.g. in Windows explorer or MS Outlook isn't displaying PDF preview.
This issue has been discussed in this forum some months ago, and this page gives a solution that has helped:
    http://www.pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/index.html#fixer
Instead of fixing this well-known issue with the last patch Adobe decided again not to fix. And after installing the patch you have to repair PDF preview handler again...

  • Win7 64-bit PDF Preview works- except with PDF Forms?

I have Win7 64-bit with Adobe Acrobat X Standard installed. I receive PDFs as attachments in Outlook 2010, and for the most part, the PDF preview works fine. Downloaded PDFs that I have in a folder with the Preview Pane work fine as well. However with PDF forms, which have cells that you can manually fill in, i.e. name, hire date, etc. I receive an error "Please wait, If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document." This happens in both Outlook 2010, and the Windows Explorer preview pane panel. The attached website does not fix my issue as the registry key is correct. Any ideas? Thanks! http://www.pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/#downl

    Hello NI_LV_82_User,
The DIAdem PDF output is not compatible with Windows 7 (DIAdem 11.1 was released in July 2009, Windows 7 was made available in October 2009). The DIAdem R&D department is currently working on a fix to add this functionality under Windows 7. We are working to provide a solution as soon as possible and will make the release of the Service Pack known here on the forum as soon as it is available.

  • Acrobat Pro X PDF previewing not working in Windows 7 64-bit

    Greetings, all,
The organization I work for recently purchased a volume license for Acrobat Pro X.  We uninstalled Adobe Reader from all of our machines and installed Acrobat Pro X on them.  After the move, the PDF preview handler stopped working.  People commonly link to the URL below, but it has not worked for us.  It appears it only works for the PDF preview handler packaged with Adobe Reader, not the one packaged with Acrobat Pro.

Users are unable to preview PDFs in Windows Explorer and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.  When attempting to preview in Windows Explorer, the following appears:
       This file can't be previewed.
What can we do to get the preview handler working in Windows Explorer (Windows 7 64-bit) and Office Outlook 2007?
    Thanks in advance!

OK. Then do you mean the thumbnails in Windows Explorer? I don't have a solution for that, but there have been several posts about the issue.
Well, thumbnails in Explorer don't work either, but we're not concerned about it.  The preview pane is what we're worried about.  There is a button in the top-right that turns the pane on.  Previewing in Outlook does not work either.

  • Problem deleting pdf files on network ressources when preview window of the explorer is enabled

Some of our customers have the Preview Function enabled in Windows Explorer. When they delete a pdf File on a network ressource (\\server1\share1\ for example) in Windows Explorer the file disappears, but will not be deleted immediately. After a refresh of the current explorer window, the file apperas again. After 30-60 seconds and a refresh of the Windows Explorer View, the file disappears definitely.
The problem exists only on various network ressources and when the Preview Function of the Windows Explorer is enabled. On local drives the pdf Files will be deleted immediately and don't appear again. With any other file types except pdf, there is no problem.
Problem exists on 32 and 64 Bit Windows 7, all current security Updates installed. Current Version of  Adobe Reader X is also installed.
    Anyone have an idea?

Disable the preview function of Windows Explorer.

  • Acrobat Reader upgrade prevents Windows 7 64-bit Explorer preview

I recently upgraded my Acrobat Reader on 64-bit Windows 7 to Adobe Reader XI.  Now my Windows Explorer preview pane no longer shows previews of PDF files.  The most relevant hit I found online was
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/file-cant-be-previewed-er ror-in-the-pdf-preview/369f87c0-303b-4d74-975f-76cddab9e5b1,
which points to a registry fix at
    http://www.fixya.com/support/t5352123-error_in_pdf_preview_handler_vista.
However, my registry already already contains the corrected value.  This same fix is provided at Adobe as recently as 13 June 2013:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1231685
I suspect that the most recent Reader update requires a different preview handler fix.
Thanks if anyone can provide a fix for the current Reader.

It is an empty preview except for the message "This file can't be previewed."
However, I think it is a temporary problem from the update.  After logging out of the normal account so that I can check whether the problem exists with the admin account, I logged back into the normal account and found the problem gone.  No reboot, just log out and in again.  Which is odd when you consider that, prior to see the problem, I was in the admin account for the upgrade, and logged out in order to log in to the normal account (at which time I saw the problem).
    Thanks anyway!

  • How to open report.pdf file? getting error message file cannot be previewed pdf preview handler

how can I open a report.pdf file that shows error: file cannot be previewed because of an error w/ pdf preview handler

    Hi pfmercerville,
If you are running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 (or Vista), you will find that your PDF files do not preview in Windows Explorer as they do in the 32-bit versions. Instead, all you see is a message stating that This file can’t be previewed. To enable this functionality on your 64-bit operating system, follow these steps.
    1. Click the Orb (Start Button).
    2. Go to the Search programs and files textbox and input regedit.
    3. Select regedit.exe from the results.
    4. When the UAC prompt appears, click the Yes button.
    5. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, go to (and select):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}
    6. In the right pane, locate AppID.
    7. Change AppID value to {534A1E02-D58F-44f0-B58B-36CBED287C7C}.
    8. Restart your computer for the change to take affect.

  • PDF tab missing in Windows Explorer

We have a number of Windows 7 and Vista machines running Acrobat 9 Standard or Professional.  When viewing the file properties of any PDF in Windows Explorer on any of these machines except one, there's a "PDF" tab that displays metadata information on the file.  On one Win7 Ultimate PC running Acrobat 9.4 Professional, that tab doesn't display.  The metadata can be seein in Acrobat File -> Properties, and can be searched in Windows Explorer, but cannot be accessed using that tab.  As far as I know, there's no customization in either Acrobat or Windows that would cause this tab not to display - I've compared every setting I can think of between machines that show the PDF tab and the one that doesn't.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

According to the following article, this is an Adobe problem related to their shell extension called pdfshell.dll.  That extension is only a 32 bit extension, and 64 bit Windows will not run 32 bit extensions.
Check out the Ccmment from Tad Marshall here:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/33971c82-78ee-445b-acb5- 5a64db5b6bb0/
"As part of the Adobe Reader download, Adobe provides a shell extension called pdfshell.dll.  On 32-bit Windows XP, you'll find it in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX folder.  On 64-bit Windows 7, you'll find it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX folder.  But, on either system, it's a 32-bit shell extension.  On 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Explorer will only run as a 64-bit program.  According to numerous web forum posters, this was a change between the last "beta" and the "RC" version of 64-bit Windows 7.  There is a 32-bit version of Windows Explorer in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder, but if you try to run it you get another instance of 64-bit Explorer.  The (first) problem is that 64-bit Windows Explorer won't load a 32-bit shell extension.
You can see the 32-bit pdfshell.dll "working" on 64-bit Windows 7 in the File Open dialog of any 32-bit application (such as Adobe Reader).  To see this, first open an Explorer window and navigate to a folder that has some PDF files like your IBM manual.  Right click on the file and choose Properties.  Look at the tabs in the dialog and note that there is no PDF tab.  Now, OK out of the Properties dialog and double-click on the same file to open it in Adobe Reader.  Now press Ctrl-O or choose File Open to get the File Open dialog.  Navigate to the same folder, right click on the same file and choose Properties.  Look at the tabs and see that you now have the PDF tab that was missing in Explorer.  In that tab, you can see the Title that pdfshell.dll has pulled from the file.  This works because 32-bit Adobe Reader has loaded a 32-bit common file dialog which *will* load a 32-bit shell extension."

  • Adobe acrobat 7.0 on new Win7 64 bit computer

I need to use acrobat 7.0 with an older software that I am transferring to a new computer.  I have a keycode for acrobat 4.0.  The Transfer Activation option is greyed out.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

If you don't have your SN for AA7 handy but did register, then you can go to the Adobe.com site, login, go to the My Product link under your name at the site. You can run AA7 on Win7 64-bit, but will have to do some fix up to do work arounds. Neither AcroTray.exe or the Adobe PDF printer of AA7 will work on the system and those require the workarounds to be able to create PDFs.
I am not sure why you mentioned AA4. I doubt that you can do much of anything with AA4. Is there a reason you specifically need AA7 and that a newer version would not do the job? Not sure what you mean about transfer activation. You have to install the software. However, AA7 also requires a different process since the activation server for AA7 is no longer available.

After a close debug, i found that "doPreview" is crashing my application. Also the previewer assembly "PDFPrevHndlr.dll" is modified in Adobe Acrobat XI.
the modified "DoPreview" method now expecting 2 parameter (int, out int), after giving some values in it, it stops crashing, still my PDF preview not shown up.
