PDF print Cocoon problem

Hello!
I use Apex + Tomcat + Cocoon + fop_post from Carl Backstrom's Blog [http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html].
Printing reports is possible, but printing big reports, with a lot of data in a cel,l doesn't work. Trying to print a rtf, word says : "Missing file: C:\cocoon\styles\main.css".
Acrobat Reader says : "Adobe reader could not open 'sample.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"
Does anyone have a suggestion how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much.
kind regards
anton

  • Adobe PDF Printing Preferences Problem

We have seven Windows 7 64 bit machines with Adobe Pro XI (part of the Technical Communication Suite).  On one machine, we are unable to modify the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences Settings for the following two items:
Adobe PDF Security:  It is grayed out and we are unable to edit. No selections are available from the dropdown.
Adobe PDF Folder:  While not grayed out and we are unable to edit and no selections are available from the dropdown.  On all the other computers, this is listed as "Adobe PDF Output:"
What do we need to do on this one computer, so we can edit the two line items?
I removed the printer from the machine, and ran the Repair function from Acrobat.  I have changed the Default Settings: section several times.  That did not resolve the issue.  I suspect it may be a difference in the actual driver.  Any suggestions?

Log on as the local Administrator of the machine.  This does not mean the network admin account or workgroup admin account.  It means the Administrator/Owner of the local machine ( Log in using built in-administrator | Create local administrator account | Windows 7, 8, Vista ) .  Are you able to access these features when logged in as the local machine administrator?  If yes, then this is an account permissions issue probably correctable.  If no, then you have a machine permissions issue, which is more serious.

  • ADOBE PDF - print driver problem converting Publisher 2007 to PDF

I cannot find an answer to my problem anywhere online. Our company does not have InDesign yet, so I have to use Publisher 2007 (Vista operating system) to create ads. The problem is that when I go to print and choose ADOBE PDF to convert the Publisher document, the PDF output is 1/4-1/2" smaller all the way around. It is perfectly sized in Publisher, but the PDF output keeps reducing. Is there a fix for this? Thank you.

I suspect it is a shrinking issue in Publisher (check the print properties). A lot of packages reduce the margin so it will print all of the information on printers, many printers add margin space. At least worth a check.

  • PDF print borders problem

Since working with Lion I've been getting a printing problem with PDFs.
I'm starting with a document in Word. The layout is fine, and if I print from Word the layout is preserved and I get a printout looking the same as what I'm seeing on the screen.
The issue comes when I do a file print, save as pdf... I get a PDF file that looks the same on screen as the Word document, but when I come to print the PDF, the print dialog window wants to scale the document to 92% (which is too small). If I set the scaling to 100% the top of the document gets cut off and the page is not centered top to bottom.
What's going here? I'm guess this has something to do with borders and my particular printer but I can't figure out what to do to correct it. Also this issue has arisen in Lion - it was fine in 10.6.

I've been playing around a bit since posting this - here's some more information. I tried printing from the PDF to a different printer - it prints perfectly.
    The two printers are:
HP 8000 (the one I'm having the problem with)
    HP 5100
One other thing I noticed is that, when printing the PDF, if I initially select the HP5100, set the scaling to 100% and then select the HP 8000, it prints a full size page with no cut off, but the page is not centered properly top to bottom - the page is too high.
I'm confused - how come it prints from within Word and to another printer with no problems?
This has the feel of a bug - any input appreciated.

  • Firefox 28 hangs when I try to print to Acrobat PDF printer

    Hello all!
I have observed a problem when I try to print a webpage in Firefox v28 using the Acrobat PDF Printer (Acrobat Pro 9.5.5) installed in a Virtual Machine (VMware View 5.2) with Windows 7 64 bits. The printing dialog hangs (no response) after the "Save as" pdf dialog. Then I have to force Firefox to close, and afterward a Acrobat PDF conversion dialogs appears with the progress bar stopped at the middle. I also have to close this afterwards.
The others programs (Office, IE, Notepad...) are able to print through the PDF printer without problems. The problem appeared after the automatic update to Firefox v28, since when I downgrade to Firefox v26 the problem disappears.
I checked a similar configuration in a physical computer (W7 64 bits, Acrobat Pro 9.5.5, Firefox v28), and everything runs good, so I think it is a change that happened in Firefox v28 that has some problem with the VM configuration. I also have tried to change the Firefox profile, reset Firefox and reset the printing settings and reinstall Acrobat. No luck.
I would like to know if somebody know some change in Firefox v28 related with the printing or related to some service or update that can have some problem in the virtual machine.
    Any help is welcome!
    Thanks!

When you updated, did you reset the printer settings in '''about:config''' under '''print.print_printer'''?

  • Acrobat PDF Printer Hangs in Windows 8

I am running Windows 8 Enterprise RTM  64-bit on an Intel i7-3770 3rd gen CPU, Z77 chipset. I've found that most PDF printers I have been using on Windows 7 now hang on 8, including the Acrobat X printer (latest version). I have found one free alternative that works fine, but would like to get back to using the Acrobat printer. Will Adobe be releasing an update that addresses the hang?
Above is a screenshot afterr more than ten minutes:

    Hello All
I have been struggling with this same problem of Printing to Acrobat PDF driver freezing up not only the print spooler, but also the software I was printing from, on Windows 7 64Bit, using both acrobat 9.4 and Acrobat X with the same freeze, stall lockup result.
I think this is the same problem you are having.
I found many questions about this online but no useful answers, and alot of fingerpointing trying to blame different programs and combinations of software.
The 1 solution, which created a PDF and did not freeze, was to switch of the choice of a saving location in the PDf driver and setting a fixed PDF save location instead of the ASK for location option.
This worked but was a real pain having to move and rename the file each time.
This got me thinking that there was actually nothing wrong with the PDF driver.
The problem seemed to be the user input to save the file to a certain location.
I then experimented and found that if I was fast enough with a file name, that the save to location option did not freeze up when creating the PDF.
By repeatedly trying to print and looking at the print dialog box I noticed that after a count of 5 seconds the Acrobat PDF print driver progress box greyed slightly (Asif loosing focus) and after that happened there was no hope of a successful PDF.
The 5second timer got me thinking about a windows timeout, rather than a PDF option.
    PDF Print Freeze Problem Solution:
Windows 7 64 bit (And I assume Windows 8 too) has a default program timeout of 5 seconds after which Windows considers a program to be NOT RESPONDING.
The time during which the PDF printer is waiting for a response from you for a save location, is seen as inactive by Windows and Windows decides that the Print driver has stalled.
Something then changes anough to effect the driver, and once the PDF print driver is allowed to carry on and save the PDF it can't anymore and stalls.
Solution is to edit the HungAppTimout in the Windows Registry, and set it to something like 20000 to 30000 = 20 to 30 seconds.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978614.aspx (Info regarding the Registry Key)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\HungAppTimeout
This then give you 20-30 seconds to select a save location for your PDF.
In my case (Windows 7 64bit) the Registry entry was missing.
I had to create it from scratch and reboot.
    If ENTRY IS MISSING:
Goto the folder in the registry
Right Click  - NEW - STRING VALUE
Name it exactly as above including CAPS: HungAppTimeout
Set the value to 20000 (For 20 seconds or more if you need it)
    Reboot Windows.
After that Printing to PDf with Acrobat works 100%.
Note this option also helped on my Windows XP PC.
I hope this prevents others from struggling as much as I did to fogure this out.
    Regards

  • Problem regarding PDF printing in apex 3.1 and 11g database using cocoon

    Hi,
i am configuring pdf printing on apex 3.1 (database 11g on windows XP OS) with cocoon/apache tomcat/fop using steps given in Carl Backstrom blog
    http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html
    I am using cocoon 2.2.10 / tomcat 6.0.20 and JDK 1.6
I did everything as was mentioned in Carl's blog and everything configured without any hassle. I even enabled network services for FLOWS_030100 user on database. Even after doing all the steps I'm getting the error
ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
I'm confused and don't know what to do next.

    Hi,
By default, the ability to interact with network services is disabled in Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1). Therefore, if running Oracle Application Express with Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1), use the new DBMS_NETWORK_ACL_ADMIN package to grant connect privileges to any host for the FLOWS_030100 database user. Failing to grant these privileges results in issues with PDF/report printing, specifically, you will get the following error message:
ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either
the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
Follow the steps mentioned in the Oracle Application Express Installation Guide, [Enabling Network Services in Oracle Database11g|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/install.310/e10496/post_inst.htm#BGEJJIHE]. Also refer to the [troubleshooting section|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/install.310/e10496/post_inst.htm#BHAGIHIB] in case you receive an ORA-44416: Invalid ACL error after running the previous script.

  • Tomcat/Cocoon/APEX PDF printing. Another issue

    Hi All,
I am trying to implement my own custom report layout for the following simple Report query
    select e.DEPTNO, d.DNAME, d.LOC, e.ENAME, e.JOB
    from emp e, dept d
    where e.deptno = d.deptno
    The steps are the following
    1. Create Report Query
    2. Download XML file
    3. Use Stylus Studio to create XSL-FO (XSLT 2.0) based on XML data downloaded in
    previous step.
    4. Go back to Report query and upload XSL-FO file to APEX (layout name 'MyLayout' is also specified).
    Finish Report Query creation
    5. Enter Report Query again, select report layout 'MyLayout' and select Test Report
The result is a failure with some java cocoon exception:
org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Unknown request object encountered named template : null
    Cocoon stacktrace[hide]
    Exception in StreamGenerator.generate() context://fop_post/sitemap.xmap - 17:32 <map:serialize type="xml">

It seems to me that XSL-FO that I created for this layout is rejected somehow by APEX and not passed to Coccon at all.
Guys, what am I doing wrong ? I will appreciate any help.
    Regards,
    Vadim

    Hi Mike,
My standard printing is working nicely. That's the custom reporting that I experience problems with.
After 8 hours of googling and 4 cups of coffee I figured out where the problem was. When you define XSL-FO file you need to 'escape' every occurence of % sign. For example you cannot define width= "100%" because APEX will pass this unchanged to Tomcat and Tomcat in turn will reject this but still passing NULL template pointer to Cocoon. Taking into consideration very poor logging capabilities one can spend hours trying to fugure out what is hapenning. APEX should be smart enough to escape characters or at least there should be a doco somewhere listing the rules you need to follow whem creating FO stylesheets.
I must admit that the whole APEX PDF printing using Tomcat/Cocoon (and probably Fop because that's what used by Cocoon behind the scene anyway) is unfortunately a hack. Reporting does not have to be that complex.
I would be extremely grateful if somebody can tell me what sort of XML tool is best suited to generate XSL-FO files that can be easily understood by APEX/Tomcat/Cocoon.

    Vadim

  • PDF printing--tomcat/cocoon installed, but report server not found------

As I understood, APEX 3.1 requires either BI/FO tools to enable PDF printing.
As I do not have BI license, and as I happened to check a very good link on a blog which had a detailed viewlet on apache-cocoon route for PDF print enabling, I downloaded the tomcat, cocoon source files, built the cocoon .WAR, put it in required place as instructed, started tomcot (ran into pronblems because of port conflits, resolved these by configuring different ports for 8005 and 8080 ports).
Now, when I want to configure the external report server, I am stuck.
I am not able to locate 'Instances' tab, or 'manage environment settings ' tab in 'manage services'
I am able to find only following tabs in 'manage services' under HOME.--> Administration ----> Manage services
    1) session state
    2) caching
    3) workspace preferences
    4) applications
    5) workspace
    6) workspace schema reports
    7) Logs
Can anyone help me to find out where to configure the 'report server' now?
    Thanks,
    suresh.

Sorry, it was a silly problem:) You have to be logged in as admin to 'see' the 'instances' tab. maybe in all the tomcat/cocoon build/config issues, this simply got off my head!
now, the problem of print server config is over, I have configured the same. the 'print' link is available now in report region, when I run the report. but when I click the 'print' link, it is taking ages...or rather it is still processing...!!
Can anyone please point out to me now what is the problem...?
    thanks.

  • Cocoon pdf printing

    Hi,
I have followed Carl's very concise blog on using cocoon for pdf printing. http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html
I have tomcat and cocoon up and running on linux (NOT a five minute task on linux unless you are a sysadmin, with all respect to Carl). I have my apex (3.2 on XE ) install pointed to it under Manage Service> Instance Settings > Report Printing.
Now I'm trying to get reports to use this plumbing, but I'm not seeing a builder dialog under Print Attributes> Printing anything like Carl shows in his viewlet. I get only settings for Response Header and Content Disposition, but Carl is showing Enable Report Printing, Link Lable, File Name, Output Format, and Report Layout.
How does the builder decide when to display that kind of Report metadata? Does it have to connect to the print server or "know" that it is up to prompt for that? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • PDF with Tomcat/Cocoon Problem !!!

    Hi,
I am having problem with Tomcat/Cocoon combination for APEX PDF printing which I installed following Carl Backstrom instructions.
When a report is a region report it all works fine, but when I create a report based on a query from the reports section in Shared Components choosing report layout 'Use Generic Report Layout' I get the following error.
    javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: attribute-set named #TEXT_ALIGN# does not exist
    cocoon://fop_post/xsl - 148:58
    Cocoon stacktrace[hide]
attribute-set named #TEXT_ALIGN# does not exist
    cocoon://fop_post/xsl - 148:58
I will appreciate any feedback. I saw threads related to the same issue on this forum but they ended up covering something irrelevant.
    Regards,
    Vadim

    Vadim,
Report queries and report region use the same generic report layout. However the processing is handled by different engines. The underlying technical problem with your case is that the substitution string #TEXT_ALIGN# is not substituted in all cases for report queries. This usually does not cause any problems, but appears not to work when using Cocoon.
I'll see that we can this resolved with the next version of APEX, however when working with report layouts, you would typically use your own RTF or XSL-FO stylesheets, where this problem would not occur. The option to use the generic report layout is only included so the data can be tested independently from the layout and is not really intended to be used as the actual layout at runtime.
The generic report layout function is mainly designed to be used for report regions.
    Regards,
    Marc

  • PDF printer has a problem with Safari in "Reader" mode in Windows7

As shown in the image above. When I try to use the PDF printer to print out a web page in Safari "Reader" mode, the lines near the bottom of each page get squeezed like this. There is no problem with XPS printer. I guess this problem is because of some incorrect settings in Safari or the PDF printer?
My system is Windows 7 Pro. I am using Acrobat X Pro. The page I am trying to print is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_band_structure. This problem only happens when the webpage is adjusted into "Reader" mode in Safari.

    Many thanks for your reply!
I am sorry, I did not make my question clear. I would like to save some web pages only in "Reader" mode, because in this mode all the advertisements are filtered out and the pages look much nicer than the origional layout.
I first let Safari to active "Reader" by clicking "Reader" button.
Then I click "Print" button and select Adobe PDF as the printer.
The problem is the PDF file has something wrong (shown above), and I would like to know how to avoid this problem.

  • Reader 9 PDF printing problems

I have a Kyocera FS-C5015N. When I print any multi-page PDFs to the FS-C5015N, only the first page comes out or nothing at all. I have tracked the problem down to Adobe Reader 9. I say this because I can successfully print multi-page PDFs using version 8.2. But I cannot with v9. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Kyocera's website. Same problem. I can successfully print with Word, Excel, etc. just not Adobe Reader v9. Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue? Thanks.

I do realize that not all printers are affected. However, the problem is clearly with Adobe Reader 9. The reason I say this is that the problem does NOT exist with Adobe Reader 8. The problem ONLY occurs with Adobe Reader 9. Furthermore, I am not sure what specific resolution to this printer you are referring to, but there hasn't been a solution presented thus far that is an actual fix for the problem. Originally, I identified that if I selected "Print to Image" the entire multi-page PDF would print as expected. Although, this solution causes the multi-page PDF to print very slowly (for the reasons noted by Mike). Another reader reported that if you install FoxIT PDF Reader, multi-page PDFs print just fine. I have verified that installing FoxIT Reader DOES INDEED allow me to print multi-page PDFs to our FS-C5015N. Again, if it was purely a driver issue, why would a multi-page PDF opened with FoxIT Reader print as expected while the same PDF opened with Adobe Reader 9, not print as expected? There also were a couple other posts about using the generic Kyocera KX driver. This is not an option for us. Finally, there was a post about changing the Post Script driver setings. We do not use the Post Script driver. And just as a side note, we have tried using the Post Script driver to see if this will resolve the multi-page PDF issue, and it does not. With that said, I implore Adobe to once again acknowledge this problem and provide users with a fix. This is a very frustrating problem.

  • Problem with pdf-printing in Adobe Acrobat Pro

    Hi,
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4.3.
PDF-printing has always worked great but suddenly there is some kind of problem.
After printing a excel-document from "Print to pdf" built-in function in MacOS OR Adobes Printer I have corruptet pdf-files when showing them in Adobe Reader/Acrobat, but the MacOS Preview-software shows them correct.
So, there cannot be any problem with the printing, but the local preview on my computer using Reader or Acrobat. I dont even use the Myriad font in the document, I use Verdana.

You say you're using Verdana but you're not. The error message clearly shows you're using MyriadPro Bold.
You probably recently installed the Mac OS X 10.6.7 update which has a bug with OpenType PostScript fonts like MyriadPro Bold. Either use Verdana or another TrueType or PostScript font, or revert to Mac OS X 10.6.6.

  • Quark / PDF Printing Problems (Save as PDF in OS X)

I upgraded from Quark 4.1 to 6.5 about a year ago, and ever since then the files I create and print don't look as good. The primary issue seems to be color -- colors don't come out as deep, there seems to be less color saturation, sometimes colors are just pretty far off. I'm working in Mac OS 10.4.8.
For many years my method has been to design documents and output as PDFs to be professionally printed. These days my PDFs don't print as well. I suspect that the problem has to do with the process of creating the PDF. In Quark 6.5 I create PDFs by selecting "Save as PDF" from Quark's Print menu. Back when I was using 4.1, since Quark didn't have a built-in PDF-creator, I would go into the Chooser, select AdobePS as my printer, and then just choose Print in Quark and it would "print" to a PDF.
One other problem I've had since the upgrade is that the PDFs Quark creates are HUGE files -- tens or hundreds of megs -- often too large to email. When I used to create PDFs from the identical Quark files using 4.1, the resulting PDFs printed much better and were much smaller files (often far less than 1 meg). Solving the color problem is a higher priority for me than solving the file size issue, though.
I've spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this with our local printer here in Albany, NY (the same guy who printed my stuff in the old days, when it came out looking a lot better). Things we've tried that haven't seemed to solve the problem:
    - Increasing the LPI to 300
    - Checking the box for Full Resolution Tiff Output
    - Experimenting with OPI active and not
    - Experimenting with different PDF options like "Save as PDF," "Compress PDF," "PDF-X," etc. (Compress PDF does result in smaller PDFs, but the quality of the resulting prints is even worse)
Also, if anyone has suggestions about Quark-specific forums I could post this to, let me know. I tried creating an account on the discussion forms on Quark's website, but I don't receive their confirmation email to confirm my account.
Any advice greatly appreciated -- thanks so much!

    Marshall,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
colin clarke1’s info is spot on. I will add a bit more. Acrobat Professional includes Distiller in addition to a print driver called Adobe PDF 7.0 (version number matches version of Acrobat). I think the print driver installs automatically, but if not, you should choose to install it and then it will show in your list of printers. This will allow you to make PDFs from Quark XPress much as you did with Quark 4.1.
Distiller comes with some pre-defined Settings (formerly know as Job Options) for different types of printing, i.e., Smallest file (low-resolution like online viewing), Standard, High Quality, Press Quality and others. These Settings are general standards in the industry in terms amount and type of image compression, font embedding, color management, compatibility with previous Acrobat versions and etc.
colin clarke1’s method of saving a Quark doc as a PostScript and then distilling it is one method. (You can set this in your Quark Preferences.) Alternatively, you could do the following within Quark XPress…
    (a) Select Print, which brings up the Print window. At the bottom of the window are some buttons. Click on Page Setup and in its window, for Format for: select the Adobe PDF 7/8, the appropriate Paper size and then OK.
    (b) Returning to the Quark print window, make all the necessary choices for Layout, Setup, Output, Options, Layers, Bleed, OPI and Profiles.
    (c) Next, click on the button Printer (at the bottom) which brings up a Mac OS print window. Click to the right of Printer and select Adobe PDF 7/8. Next, click and hold on Copies & Pages for a drop-down list of options and select PDF Options. Click on the bar to the right of Adobe PDF Settings and a list of Distiller Settings will pop up and select the one that best fit the type of printing you are doing, e.g., Press Quality. If you want to see the PDF version afterwards, then select Acrobat for After PDF Creation. Click Ok.
    (d) Returning to the Quark print window, click Print button (lower right). A Save window appears for you to name your document and select where you wish to save in on your computer. (If you choose to see the PDF afterwards, then Acobat will launch and the PDF will then appear in Acrobat.)
You could learn more about the latest version of Acrobat 8.0 (released November 2006) by Adobe’s “tour” at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/productinfo/features/
    Hope this helps.
