PDF's become bloated, deadline looms

Hi all,
I'm trying to do something that's never been a problem in the past, as recently as a few months back. I have a file created in FastTrack Schedule that's a mere 900 kb, 25 pages with some colors, but in a layout that does not show the timeline, which would make it maybe 50+ pages. It's time to print that file, and share it with co-workers who don't have this app. I've always done this with Print>Make pdf or Print>Mail pdf before with smooth sailing. Today what's happening is that the creation of the pdf in any form, bloats the file to nearly 50 mg! Mail chokes on it, it takes forever to send to YouSendIt.com (which I thought would be faster than Mail directly), and it just shouldn't be so huge. I checked the printer settings, and, at first it was sending it to pdf as Photo quality, which I changed to Graphic, but that didn't solve it. I have "two" printers, a Canon BJC-8200 with a Canon driver, and the same with Gutenprint, but both drivers result in the same problem. I'm trying to send it to myself in Gmail to get to a computer lab and print it quickly on a laser printer as the pdf.
What gives?

Settings for the printer will not have any effect on the size of the pdf. By default, pdfs are made with the best quality for the graphic. Here are some things to try:
If you have put in a large graphic and scaled it down on the page, the large graphic is still what is used. Choose the size and quality of the graphic before adding it to the page.
Choose Compress PDF when you print to a pdf file. If that degrades the graphics too much, you can change the quality by editing the Automator action that contains the compression step.
Check the document you made to see if you inadvertently added some graphic that is big. I know it is tedious, but you might try making the pdf page by page until you find where the problem is.

For example,
1. It would never finish printing the file, just the first so many pages. So...
2. I updated the driver, and then I could print one copy only without problems. But...
3. I can never print more than one copy of a PDF without collate mis-sequence problems. It just does not print one whole copy before printing the next copy. And it goes back and forth printing some of the first copy, then the second, then a few pages from the first, etc. Eventually it all prints, but they are mixed up sequentially. But some pages are in order. And...
4. It prints soooo slow compared to before.

Yeah, this sounds like a general print driver problem with the newer versions of the Adobe products, not just Acrobat or ID. Ricoh may or may not have an updated driver, but theyare definitely the ones to ask.
You haven't told us the OS... Some Mac users have had good luck, I think, using the CUPS drivers with problem printers when the manufacturer doesn't have a solution, but I'm a Windows guy, so don't do much with Mac printing.

Pdf files become pixelated when filter effects are applied...

I have some pdf files in my Motion 4 project. When I uncheck the "fixed resolution" box, they pdf files look great. But when I proceed to add any filter effect like any of the Glow filters, the pdf file becomes all pixelated and looks horrible. What am I doing wrong?

Filters fix the resolution, rasterizing the vector graphics. Try make it very large, the apply the filter to the containing layer and shrink the layer to be the desired size...

Pdf files become unclear when zoomed

I read a lot like magazines, newspapers etc that are in pdf format. I save them to ibooks and read whenever there is a free time. Recently i observe that the letters become vague and unclear when zoomed. Can some of you advise a solution to this problem.

I have a problem using the "save as pdf..." command of the print panel of MS Word (lower L corner). When file has a few photos in it, the pdf file becomes huge; 7 mb Word file becomes 31 mb., on MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor , OS X 10.5.8

How can converting a MS Word file to a pdf make the file 5x bigger? Can someone tell me how to update the "save as pdf..." feature when "printing" a file in MS Word (Word:mac 2008, ver. 12.2.5). The problem is that using this to create pdf files gives huge files when the Word file has graphics pasted as pictures from Powerpoint, even for simple graphics and when first exported at low resolution (180 dpi) as jpg files from Powerpoint and inserted into Word.

Here's a little more info on the save_as_pdf issue. It is Word files in 97–2004 format (doc) that get 5x bigger. The conversion works fine and file size is normal if the Word file is saved in most recent Word format (docx rather than doc). Somehow MS Word can't save its own files properly in pdf format. Thanks Bill for all the frustration.

Pdf documents become blank

I'm having a perplexing problem. I've been using Word to make documents then selecting PRINT then SAVE AS PDF then uploaded them to a website for others to access. I did this for about 30 different documents with no problem. Suddenly, beginning on a certain date, each time I repeated this same process, the pdf document looked fine on my computer but when I posted it onto a website for others to download and they brought it into their computer, it was blank. I went into the website, downloaded the same document to my computer and it was blank on my computer as well. Now every time I try to create a pds document, no matter what the application, this happens. I have found nothing in the Word forum or any other application forum that address this issue. This is the error I get in Adobe Acrobat Professional when trying to convert one of the Word documents to a pdf

Please help!

This is a PostScript error, but it's hard to tell what type of error. Do the documents contain graphics? Have you tried changing the font? If changing the font doesn't work, a tedious but effective method is to start ripping out sections of the document to see what part is causing the error.

MEGA memory leak!! cannot use PS ideas please?! deadline looming!!

Hello PS community!!
I'm running PS 5.5 on a Macbook pro Retina version 10.7.5
Despite having more than 30gb free on my disk, as soon as I open my file (Doc 199.1M/655.6M) within 1 minute, all 30gb is consumed leaving just 10MB and I cannot work anymore after the 'scratch disks are full message appears' then as soon as I close PS, all of the memory is restored!
The scratch disks are set to the default macHD. like they always have been with no problems and I'm working in other programs such as Premier pro with huge files and there's no problem.
It's like there's a black hole only for PS, please help if anybody has any ideas I have a deadline loomig and I can't do anythung in PS at the moment!

Yes it's a top spec retina 15' with a solid state drive.
My setup has always been sweet and worked brilliantly this is a new problem, i was handling huge 1.5gb ps.files with no issue and haven't changed any settings since then.
my HD is just much fuller now.
Around the same time the message began popping up when I open Premier pro that "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable. To open this project, thescratch disks will be set to your Documents folder. Would you like continue?"
(Then I just click yes and it all works no problem)
I suppose these issues are related.
I don't generally use smart objects but that's never been an issue with regards to extra weight of files

Error opening .indd files with CS6 AND CC - deadline looming, what is the fix?

I just got a new Macbook Pro and upgraded to CS6 two weeks ago. I was having problems opening files:
So I asked IT to upgrade me to CC.
Guess what? Still get the error message. I was editing this file yesterday without issue.
My deadline is now. WTH is going on???

Well, he's not working in the file now so there's no .idlk file for anything in the folder.

Please let me know what browser, OS and Reader version you are using to view the pdf files.
Try downloading the latest version of Adobe Reader from : http://get.adobe.com/reader/
and then try viewing the pdf. Also try viewing the document from a different Browser and check.

Pdf has become default setting

All of a sudden anything I print (text or photos) shows up as .pdf in preview. As a result my photos are not the size I intend them to be. I haven't changed any settings (that I'm aware of) and I have gone through all my preferences looking for a pdf box to uncheck. This happens with both printers in my network

The Print dialog has a PDF tab whereby you can save
all print jobs as a pdf. Likewise, there is a Preview
tab in the same Print dialog that will make a pdf of
the file and give you a preview of the document in
Preview. If the Print button in the Print dialog is
behaving like the latter process, then it sounds like
the printing system has some major issue. When the
Preview appears, you should have a Print tab. What
happens when you select this? I'm wondering if yet
another preview of the document appears of if the
print job is spooled off to the printer.
If another preview appears I would delete both
printers and reset the printing system, which is a
menu within the Printer Setup Utility. You may then
have to reinstall the printer driver and add the
network printer again, but this may be all that you
need to do.
I'm not sure how to describe the solution to my problem. The more that I looked at "preview", the more the layout looked like an old 4'X6" photo paper setting that I used to use with a previous inkjet printer I had. After restarting the computer and digging through all the places "page layout" could be selected, I was able to rid myself of the no longer useful setting. Now, I am happy to say, I can print without problems. So I thank you for offering a solution to a question that turned out not to actually be my problem. I appreciate your willingness to help.

When I resave a PDF it becomes huge.

I have a PDF that is approximately 1700 pages long. Somehow it is only about 215MB in it's current state. Unfortunately, I need to file this with an entity that accepts ONLY 7MB chunks at a time. I tried two different things with strange results:
1. I resaved the PDF to my desktop so I could work with it, without damaging the original. When I resaved the PDF it ballooned to about 4.5GB of data.
2. I also attempt to extract some 200-page chunks from the PDF and, again, it ballooned to a huge amount of data.
I am very confused about that I did and how to resave it in smaller pieces, without this happening (additionally I will need to add title pages and some other pages to each 7MB chunk that I create, so I am at a loss of how to do this -- but I know that I cannot end up filing something like 400 chunks -- I already was going to have problems with filing the 30-something I currently have).

Which version of Acrobat are you using?
If you're using Acrobat Pro XI, select File>Save as Other>Reduced Size PDF... and tweak the settings. Earlier versions of Acrobat had a menu sub-item 'Reduce File Size...' that enables you to create an optimized, reduced file.
If the files you're sending are being used for print, can you send your file via a service like WeTransfer to your client?

Help With Buttons Please. Deadline Looming

Hi everyone,
I am having a major brain block today. My problem is simple... and I cannot fix it. too tired.
I have a menu the has NO overlays. Just a simple graphic that I made a button on top using the Apple Square Red Shape that comes with DVDSP.
I simply want the button to change to a different color when it's navigated to. I cannot do it for the life of me and my client will be here in 2hrs.

Make sure that you have the latest version of Captivate 7 -- version 7.0.1.237.
Here is how you can do it using shared actions.
Group your tool tips and name it as, say Tips_Gr.
Go to Project > Advanced Actions and create an action, say ShowTT, as given here:
Hide Tips_Gr.
Show ToolTip_1 (Here ToolTip_1 is your 1st tool tip.)
Click Save as Shared Action.
In the Save as Shared Action window, give any relevant description if you prefer and:
In the Parameter Description field of Tips_Gr, give a description "Object to be hidden".
In the Parameter Description field of ToolTip_1, give a description "Object to be shown".
Save and close this window.
Close the Advanced Action window as well.
Now, select the first button. Under Action accordion of the Properties panel, select Execute Shared Actions. Since you have only one shared action, it gets selected by default in the Shared Action list.
Ciick the {P} button next to the shared action name.
In the Shared Action Parameters window:
Select the Object to be hidden as Tips_Gr.
Select the Object to be shown as ToolTip_1.
Save and close the window.
Repeat this for all buttons. Select the object to be hidden as Tips_Gr always. Just change the object to be shown.

PLEASE Help ASAP - deadline looming

Hi - I appreciate any specific help on this problem. I've
developed a Flash Drag & Drop game for kids to dress a
character properly for winter snow sports (skiing, snowboarding, xc
& snowshoe) -- I've got everything working beautifully except
for the fact that I would like the give the user the choice of a
helmet OR a hat and still have either selection be considered
correct. I know I'm looking at a logical OR operator (or at least I
believe I am) -- but it is just NOT working. Can someone please
please please take a look at my code asap and let me know what you
think the problem is? The helmet is comprised of a mc with a nested
button (instance name is 'boaderhelmet' - and the hat's instance
name is "boarderhat".....here's the whole code for all the items...

I just took another look at the onRelease event and see that
the hit test/drop target shows that it's on the _root level;
however, while that's true, so are the items. I removed the _root
reference on the first baseshirt and left it on the next item so
you can see what I mean....I haven't tried this across the board,
but it does work when I dress the character with just the baseshirt
not referencing the _root level....Do you think that would solve my
primary issues with the onRelease events? Thanks again!

links via my desktop. But when I upload the file(s), to view
online, I am unable to view the text in the swf.
I checked all the permissions and tested on 3 separate
servers. I also used a couple different ftp applications and double
checked there settings. In addition, I had a friend do the same.
But every time the file is tested - nothing. Any idea to what the
issue is? The AC is below. I placed a few comments, just in case.

Linked fields not working correctly- PLEASE HELP DEADLINE LOOMING!

I have two tables. The first is called Orders and contains a autonumber field named ID. This field is linked to a field named OrderID in another table named ProductOrders. I am using a submission form with a cfinclude to submit to both tables. There should only be one Orders.ID and numerous ProductOrders.OrderID (but they should be the same number). When I submit the form there are no error messages but the ProductOrders.OrderID is blank and therefore not linked to Orders.ID. What should I be looking for? I have linked the fields in Access in properties and relationships. What else?
