PDF's do not open in Firefox windows

Hi,
I am running FF v.28 and have not been able to open up PDF's in a very long time. In fact I don't remember the last time this worked properly. When clicking on a PDF link, the page either opens up blank or nothing happens. I can view PDF's in that other browser without problems. I have tried "various" fixes found on the net but still nothing. I will try removing FF and reinstalling as a last resort. Otherwise I am at my wits end.
Thank you.

A few things:
(1) Your "More System Details" shows two different Adobe PDF plugins (10 series and 11 series). You might need to disable one of those.
Open the Add-ons page using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Adobe Acrobat" and set one of them to "Never Activate".
(2) Try changing your viewer.
The settings file that stores actions for files Firefox can't display on its own sometimes gets corrupted, and switching the setting a couple times in the Options dialog can help straighten it out.
This article describes how to access the PDF setting: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].
Any luck?

  • Bookmarked PDF's will not open in browser window

I just got the latest FF 3.6.6 and installed Nitro from Adobe so that I could open PDF's in the browser. Before upgrading, I could bookmark a PDF and it would still open it in the window. Now it wants to save it. How do I fix this? I bookmark a lot of PDF's because I don't want to save them on my computer, and I use them over and over for my writing.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I upgraded to 3.6 and got Nitro add on

    1. Nitro is NOT an Adobe product.
    2. It is an alternative to Adobe Acrobat.
3.It currently does not have the ability to display in a browser tab; see 3rd item below.
    <u>Company's web site</u>: http://www.nitroreader.com/
<u>User forum</u> (click "Help" at the top of the Company's web site): http://community.nitropdf.com/nitropdf?from_gsfn=true
    <u>User forum thread; no in-browser display</u>: http://community.nitropdf.com/nitropdf/topics/launching_pdfs_in_the_browser_window
You should be able to open PDF files from the internet directly in a separate Nitro window (not a tab in Firefox) if you change your settings on the Application panel (Tools > Options > Applications for "...PDF Document" content type(s). Read the following 2 articles carefully:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+file+types
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions
<u>The PDF file will NOT open within Firefox because no browser plugin is provided by the company, but instead</u> will open the Nitro program in a separate window and display the PDF there.
Somewhat general instructions; I do not have Nitro, so I am guessing at some names and locations on your hard drive and what you will see on the Applications panel. In the Applications panel, use the pull down arrow (see step 4 in the above article, Managing File Types), click "Use Other".
-If Nitro <u>IS on the pop-up list</u>, click on Nitro, click OK.
-If Nitro is NOT on the pop-up list, click Browse, go to your installation folder for Nitro (probably on C: drive in your Programs folder), open the Nitro folder, double-click on the executable that will open the Nitro program; nitro.exe/nitroreader.exe (whatever the file is named; you might want to find and open the Nitro program before you begin the process to know the exact executable file name to double-click).

  • PDF documents suddenly not opening in Firefox 3.5.6

I'm running Windows XP and using Adobe Reader 9.2 with Acrobat 6.0 installed.
In the last couple of weeks Adobe Reader has suddenly stopped opening some PDF documents (but not all) in Firefox 3.5.6.
The error message is attached.  "The Adobe/Acrobat Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit Adobe/Acrobat Reader and exit your web browser and try again".
Any ideas what has gone wrong?

You might want to check here to see if you have everything configured correctly.

  • Pdf links will not open in ie8 windows 7

I have installed, uninstalled Adobe Reader 10 and Internet Explorer.  I have tried all the solutions listed in some other posts.  PDF links will not open the files on some web sites, Fidelity.com in particular. I have reset IE8 Advanced Options and Advanced Options Reset, Created another Windows Administrative user, performed clean boot in Windows and run IE8 (no addons) from the accessory menu and unchecked the Display PDF in Browser box in preferences.  None of these options have resulted in correcting the problem.  Adobe Reader 10 works fine on the Fidelity web site in Firefox.

  • Firefox will not open another Firefox window, or give me the option to do so even though it use to.

Simple as the header. Simply will not let me open another Firefox window in any way. It use to work fine and I cannot find a setting pretaining to my problem.

AVG extensions can cause this issue.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

  • PDF files will not open in Firefox 3.0.10

When I click on a PDF file nothing happens. I have installed the Reader, repaired it, uninstalled the Reader and unistalled it to no avail. There was a problem with FoxitPDF reader which had and is installed, since then I can not open PDF files.

    Hello,
    In Firefox, go to:
    Tools > Options
    Select the Applications tab.
Adobe Acrobat Document will probably be the first item in the list.  What program is currently selected in the Action list, to the right?  You can change it, there may be 2 Adobe listed.  If it's not already selected, change the action to Adobe Reader, if possible, then see what happens when you try opening a PDF within Firefox.

  • I can not open 2 firefox windows

    I am using Windows7
I have disunstalled Firefox 3.6.12 and re-installed it.
When one firefox window is open and if i click on File -> New Window
    No new firefox windows opens!
If I surf on a web site and I point with my mouse a link and click rignt and then select "open in Link in a new window", no new window opens!

All I had to remove was AVG Safe Search...AVG Security Tool Bar is ok.
That add-on screw everything up. Gmail notifier, right click pop ups would come up blank (Can't view properties, etc), tool drop down menu's were blank.
    Stupid AVG!

  • Workaround for PDF drill down not opening in new window

Has anyone found a way of getting a drill down PDF which doesn't
replace the original report in the window?
    TIA
    Paul Williams

    Four years later...
Is there a way to do this yet?
So far I have had to create the report as DESTYPE=HTML in order to give the user a 'drilldown' with the option of using the back button on the browser and also 'Open in a new window'. When using PDF the 'back' button does not work and 'Open in a new Window' does not seem to be an option.

  • PDF's do not open in new window

I am attempting to open a series of PDF files as part of a
Captivate program using click boxes. Although I have selected "New"
in the pulldown menu, the files open in the same window in which
the SWF file is running. Consequently, if the user closes the file,
    the entire program closes.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for both replies!!
    I'm using Captivate 3.
It is opening in the same window (using IE6). Previously, the
link was to a Word doc, but we wanted to use PDF's to improve user
download speed. I changed the click button hyperlink back to .doc,
and a new window opens for the user as expected.
I haven't yet mentioned that even using PDF's, everything
works fine in preview mode. It seems like there may be a publishing
    issue.

  • Ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox although my mac switches to the firefox window as this is my default browser- what to do? Previously this has always worked without a hitch...

ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox athough my mac switches to the firefox window as i have this set to be my default browser- what should i do?

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • PDF files will not open in a Safari (v 6.0.5) browser window

PDF files will not open in a Safari (v 6.0.5) browser window, OS 10.8.5. Version 11.0.04 Adobe Reader and Plug-ins installed. Both local and internet files do not load. What is happening here?

Ok. I reloaded v 11.0.04 of Adobe Reader after quiting Safari 6.0.5 . Then deleted the 2 plug-ins AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin . Relaunched Safari and tried to read a pdf from a repository at the URL mentioned in post 10 . The file was loaded and displayed correctly. Also a pdf file from my local disk store displayed nicely as well. What I do not understand is that there is no listing of an Adobe plug in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins , nor does Safari list any Adobe plug ins. So in that case this means that plug-ins for the display of pdfs in Safari windows are no longer needed!
Adobe Reader version 11.0.04  is now working for me.
Thanks for the help and the solution C.F.McBlob

  • Pdf links will not open in new browser window

I have created a pdf document in Acrobat 9 Pro that is password protected. You must enter the password to open it. In this document there are perhaps 15 links to other pdf documents. I set up each of the links to open in a new window. The links work as expected in Acrobat, each opening in a new window, however, when I posted the documents to the web, the links open in the same window as the original document. This would not be a big issue if the original document were not password protected, but each time the user clicks on a link, it takes him out of the original document. To get back to the original document requires re-entering the password. This is a major irritation with so many links.
I know that you can set Acrobat to display the documents in its own window rather than in the browser, but my users don't know that. Control clicking on a pdf link does not open it in a new window as it would with an HTML link. Is there a simple fix to this problem that does not involve user intervention?

Well, I came up with a solution, thanks to Ted Padova who offers a simple JavaScript solution on his blog at http://www.acrobatusers.com/blogs/tedpadova/opening-pdfs-new-browser-windows.
The solution is clearly laid out even for beginners, if you know how to create a link or button.
It seems to me that a prime objective of Adobe in developing Acrobat would be to have it behave the same way in free-standing mode and as a plug-in. In this case it does not, and obviously, it has not for the last forty-eleven years that Acrobat has been on the market. Maybe some day they will get around to a fix for this obvious problem. In the meantime, read Ted's blog and be happy we have guys like him who can solve these problems.

  • When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as google) I get a message that it could not find the loaction. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened.

When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as Google) I get a message that it could not find the location. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened. Then when I close the window I see that the message is still there. I have to close it separately. Any suggestions? Oh, and this only happens if Firefox is NOT already active. If I have another Firefox window open when I click on the Icon, it just opens as expected. This message appears no matter which site Icon I select. It did not happen before I upgraded to ver 9.0.

    Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

  • Pdf files wil not open under Windows Live Mail

PDF Files will not open in WIndows Live Mail. I deinstalled Adobe Reader and reinstalled a more recent version but to no avail. It will open very well using WIndows explorer or when opening the reader. Any clues someone?

WLM is version 2009 14.0.8117.0416. I'm running under Vista and all other more recent versions are not compatible. The file association has been made and I can open all pdf files in Windows explorer. Under Outlook mail it works as well. It worked until recently when I loaded a program that was supposed to convert pdf files to Word but that did not work so I had to deinstall it and redo the file association. It worked everywher except in WLM.
