Pdf's in preview!

When I open a PDF in Preview it looks fine, but when I print, the page has a different font and all the symbols and graphics are missing. This is making it very hard for me to print off my lecture notes, any ideas?
Thank You

That's no good. And I'm really sorry that you downloaded adobe acroread.
I wish I knew how to fix your Preview. In the meantime, short of using acroread, you could try using Terminal. Say the document you want to print is in named lectures.pdf and is in your Documents folder. Then open a Terminal and type
<pre>lpr Documents/lectures.pdf</pre>
Hopefully that will print, and print correctly, particularly if the HP is your default printer. (Let me know if it doesn't print, because it might mean that it is in the print queue for another printer, which might prove surprising should you find yourself connected to it at some point in the future!)

  • Printing problem with PDF graphs from preview

Whenever I print PDF files from preview or from safari, some graphs print incorrectly, although they are displayed correctly on the screen.  This only happens with black and white figures and either a negative image with the black and white are reversed is printed or the background of the graphic just prints as a black box.  Colour elements are unaffected.  This doesn't happen when printing the same files using Adobe Reader or Adobe Professional.  Any suggestions for tweaking this, or am I going to have to start using the Adobe plugins instead?

Please try it on Adobe Reader version 10.1.0 ,  Please note that this forum is for Adobe Reader on android and not for PDF Viewer.

  • In Safari how do I open a .PDF file in Preview instead of Adobe Reader?

When a pdf file opens on my computer in Safari, it opens with Adobe Reader (v. 7.0.8). Until recently, I could right-click on my mouse and and a drop-down menu would appear with the option to open the pdf file in Preview instead of Adobe. That option has now disappeared from the drop-down menu. Can anyone explain how to get back the menu option to open the pdf file in Preview? Thanks. David

My computer automatically open PDF inside the Safari
window, but I wish it would go back to opening it
externally via Adobe. (maybe we should trade
    computers:-)
Anyway, we have the same question.
How do we control whether PDF launches internal to
    Safari, or external in Adobe?
This is what I would like to as well. I often have a lot of pdf files I need to open and then save to my hard drive. When I click on a pdf file on a website Safari opens it and then I need to right click in the document to open it with Adobe. How can I get it to open in Adobe the first time without having to right click after it opens in Safari?
    Thanks!

  • Viewing PDF Files in Preview

Since I upgraded to Leopard I am unable to properly view certain pdf files in Preview (Adobe also has some challenges). This is not a consistent problem. Certain pdf files open fine. My graphic designer just sent me a brochure that she created in CS Illustrator and I can see some of the graphical elements, but none of the text. After opening the file I also have to force quit Preview. I had called support a few weeks ago and they instructed me to reboot and reset my parameter rams. This sometimes helps, but shutting my computer down every time doesn't seem to be the best solution to the problem.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Preview supports only the open source PDF standard.
Adobe Acrobat Reader the latest version supports almost all PDF files, unless you don't install custom fonts that certain people sometimes add to their PDF.
They should be careful not to do that, as not everyone has the same font library.

  • Problems viewing Combined PDF's in Preview

I work primarily in Photoshop CS5.  All of my work is created there.  My problem arises when creating and viewing compressed PDF's using "Preview" on Macintosh.  The text is very funky.  But as expected, Acrobat itself displays all files flawlessly.  My PDF creation flow is as follows.
    1.  Save Photoshop Document(s) to individual Photoshop PDF's, without layers so I keep only one image and my vector data. (I always resize and save my documents appropiately for their intended use.  I keep all file sizes to a minimum when creating a document for email use.)
    2.  Using Acrobat, I combine/merge my files, selecting the appropriate compression method for its intended use (Small, Medium, Large)
When I use the Medium compression in Acrobat, I encounter no problems through "Preview".  All of my text appears as it should.  Works great, but I'm left with a 26MB file.
When I use the Small compression in Acrobat (suggested for email) I have all kinds of problems with my text in "Preview".  I would love to use this option as my files sizes are half of what they are at Medium compression.
I know that "Preview" is not a replacement for Acrobat, but Mac's default application for opening PDF's is "Preview", and many of the users that I deal with are not equiped with any Adobe software.  Is there a fix?  What is Acrobat discarding when it compresses the file for emailing?
I might add that the small version that is not displaying the text, still contains the text (I'm able to select it), it's just not visible.

The problem isn't with what Acrobat is discarding, but what Mac Preview is doing with the data available. The problem is with Preview. You cannot make a silk purse with a sow's ear. If Preview is doing a terrible job rendering a perfectly fine pdf, that Reader displays appropriately, there is nothing Adobe can do.

  • Issue saving edited pdf file on preview

    Hi
I opened a 5 page page pdf file on preview and just wanted to save the last page and delet the others.  When I am done, I am not able to save, or save as or cancel. When I click on save as a page for save as came on but disapeared without i could change the folder name and then it frooze.
    Thanks for your help.

First, you need an app capable of reading PDFs but that's not the issue you should be addressing. You cannot upload PDFs to job sites using Safari. Safari allow this ONLY for videos and pictures.
To do what you're asking, others have suggested using an alternative iOS browser called iCab Mobile or iUploader (iTunes links). Both should help you.

How to I set an internal link in a PDF document using Preview?  After setting a link under the Tools/Annotations menu, the link doesn't work and no detailed instructions are provided via the Help menu other than it showing the pull-down menu selection to make.

No.  I am able to use the other features such as underlining, highlighting, adding rectangles and oval and save those changes.

  • Why don't pdf open in Preview, it asks where Adobe Acrobat is located? I never used Acrobat and do not want to use it.

I am using Safari 5.0.5 and open a page that is a PDF and only a black screen comes up and asks where I have Adobe Acrobat. I do not have Acrobat and want to use preview. I looked in the Safari preferences and there is no place to set it so PDFs only use Preview. Please help!

Right or control click a PDF file you already have on the hard drive then click Get Info.
In the Get Info panel from the pop up menu next to: Open with
    Select: Preview
    Then click: Change All

  • Note function on pdfs opened in preview

When I add notes to pdfs opened in preview, they are placed in the middle of the page and text. Is there a way to move these around so that they don't cover the text?

Ah, you are right. I left the highlight function on, so preview wasn't allowing me to drag the notes.

  • Encrypting PDF documents in Preview

If you try to encrypt a PDF document in Preview by selecting the encrypt checkbox in the Save As panel, you might find that when you re-open the encrypted document, any forms that you filled out in the document have garbled characters instead of the text. This appears to be a bug to me.
To encrypt a PDF document that contains a form that you filled out with the Preview application:
    1. Choose "Print..." from the File menu.
    2. In the sheet that appears, choose "Save as PDF..." from the PDF button in the lower left corner.
    3. In the Save panel that appears, click the "Security Options..." button in the lower middle of the panel.
    4. Complete the panel that appears according to the security restrictions you want.
    5. Save the PDF from the Save panel in step 3.
When you open the document back up, you will be prompted for passwords according to the restrictions you specified. The document's entered text should be just as you saved it.
*Warning: If you choose to password protect the ability to print the document, and re-open the encrypted document and try to print it, it asks you for the password. Even if you enter the password, the document won't print. The encryption permissions in the Inspector floating panel for the document will also say that you don't have the ability to print. Seems like another bug.*
I would think that encrypting a document should also give you the ability to password protect it. Having to act like you're printing the document seems unintuitive. I hope these bugs get fixed soon.

No sense posting here unless you have a problem. If you want to report this to Apple, either send Feedback or send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do the latter, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Can't combine two PDF doc in Preview and save under different title.

I regularly used Preview to combine two scanned pages into a single document and them save them under a different name using "Save As..." With Lion I get a unhappy run-around within Versions and can't save the combined document. I wound up placing the two files in folder and zipping it for transmission via Mail. What is the procedure under Lion with Versions, or how do I disable Versions? I can track my documents quite adequately without Versions.

See  post in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3437156?start=0&tstart=0
You can combine PDFs directly in Preview, but the interface is a little tricksy.
First open the sidebar in Preview.  If your existing PDF has only one page, there will be just that one thumbnail.
The key is to drag new files onto this thumbnail/icon, not below it.  If you drag below it you'll just show two separate docs in the same preview window-- but if you drag on top onto it it will highlight and the two files will combine.  Then you can hit save.

  • Problem Creating Internal pdf Links In Preview

I am trying to create internal links in a pdf file within Preview. When I "Set Destination" to a particular page within the file, the link always goes to the page after the one I set. The strange thing is that when I view the same file on a Windows PC it works right. Any ideas how to fix?

Did you ever find out why this happens? I am having the same problem and so is another mac user I know. We can't figure it out!

  • Automatically bring up pdf files in Preview (or at least Safari)

Ideally, I would like the ability to click on a pdf file in Safari and have it automatically bring it up in Preview. I believe you need a plug-in for that and it looks like that doesn't exist (or does it). Assuming that's the case, I would settle for bringing up the pdf in Safari and then doing a ctrl-click to open with Preview. Right now opening a pdf in Safari opens a separate little window which takes more than a few seconds. It used to open up in Safari, but in all my messing around trying to figure this out, that stopped working and I can't figure out how to make it do that again.
Here's my situation and what I've tried so far. First, I have an Intel Mac and don't want to run under Rosetta for performance reasons (things take twice as long!), so Adobe, Shubert's plug-ins, etc. won't work. Adobe is too slow anyways, but I kinda like Shubert's. I've set my default pdf reader for all pdf files to Preview. I've tried turning Adobe's option to use it as the default browser plug-in on and off. I've reinstalled Adobe, removed it and reinstalled it again. I've removed the Adobe plug-in from the Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder and put it back again.
I've tried making this work with every conceivable combination of the above with no luck. Like I said, if I could just get back to having a pdf open in the Safari browser, I could make it work from there to open Preview. But if there's any way to open Preview directly from opening a pdf in Safari, that would be the bomb. Or if anyone knows of any other good pdf browser plug-ins that work with Intel based Macs running safari natively, that would be acceptable too. Spent many hours researching this on the boards as well as trying stuff. Hopefully someone can steer me correctly. Thanks.
    MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz 2GB memory 100GB 7200 HD 60GB Photo iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well Starman, I did everything you said to do to reinstall Safari and it still brings up that separate little window as opposed to bringing up the pdf in the browser. The Software Update didn't do anything after reinstalling Safari, so I reinstalled 10.4.8. Still no luck with the pdf.
One interesting thing I tried is that I set Safari so it would run using Rosetta and then set Adobe Acrobat to use the plug-in. When I brought up a pdf, it used the Adobe plug-in, but it still brought it up in a separate window and not within the browser. When running under Rosetta without the Adobe Plug-In turned on, it brought the pdf up in the separate little window again, but not the Adobe Plug-In - similar to when not running under Rosetta.
Now a few days ago I did download the Shubert Plug-In and turned Rosetta on so I could check it out. It brought up that plug-in in that little window. Now I'm not sure of this, but I think that was the first time that little window came up and I haven't been able to get rid of it since. I trashed the Shubert Plug-In, but could it be possible that something from that is hanging out there causing this problem? Or?

  • Annotating pdf documents in Preview - the text search feature doesn't work?

    Hi everyone,
I'd like to annotate my pdf documents using preview. However, I realized the other day that as soon as I start annotating a document (with notes, shapes, highlighting, etc), the preview text search doesn't work anymore.
Thanks for any help or advice!

This is a known problem. I have seen one suggestion to print the annotated PDF as a new PDF in order to get search capability back. You can try the Apple Discussions "search" feature at the upper right corner to look for more suggestions.

  • Merging PDF Files in Preview 5 in OS X v10.7 Lion

I recently updated to the OSX v10.7 Lion operating system.  In the previous version I had, I was able to merge two or more PDF files in Preview just by dragging the thumbnail.  However, in the Lion version, it is not allowing to drag one PDF file into another.  It just opens them as different files in the same preview window.  I need to know if someone can help me figure out how to merge these files 'cause I can't send ten different PDF files to my client.  Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

    Use 'Automator (applications > automator.app).
    Choose 'Workflow'.
Type 'get specified finder' in the little search box.
From the list drag 'get specified finder files' into the the panel on the right. Click 'options' and check 'Show this action when the workflow runs'.
Next type 'combine pdf' in the search box, and drag 'Combine pdf pages' into the panel on the right underneath the previous one.
Save the workflow to your apps folder.
Whenever you want to merge any pdfs, click on the workflow. Add the pdfs to the dialogue box, click 'Run' in the top left of Automator. To find the resulting merged pdf, click 'Results'.
This is no doubt a clumsy way of doing it, but it works.

  • Merge pdf files in preview

I must be missing something. I've read the instructions for merging pdf documents in Preview, but it's just not working. Wants me to "duplicate" a file or something. This seems very un-Mac-like. I get 2 documents open, drag the thumbnails from one into another, one at a time, and then try to "Save As". Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? I'm using Lion.
    TIA!

This is because of the new versioning.
As I recall this is what I did.
Start with a new, blank preview page and then drag the other pdfs onto the blank form.
I am not sure how I created the new blank page. I may have created it with Adobe first.
It seems that one cannot use Preview alone to open a new blank pdf.
Now when you click Save you should be asked for a new name.
Otherwise, I think that preview will overwrite one of the other pdf files with the new files.
It's a bit confusing - I suggest experimenting with a few "scrap" pdf files first.
I wish Apple would put back the old "Save as" function. It is so much clearer and intuitive than the current scheme where often one has to search for the location of the file once it goes away.
