Pdf's Links and Bookmarks

Hello,
I know you can add links and bookmarks within a pdf, that will take you to other areas of that particular pdf.  However, I need to put a link or bookmark into a pdf that will allow a user to click on a link in Captivate, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc and be taken directly to that section within the pdf.
Can you create a link on a website that will take you to a particular spot within a pdf?  Or will it just open the pdf and display the first page, and then the user would have to scroll to that section?
If this can't be done, what is a good solution?

Thanks so much!

    this should not be happening, maybe one of your addons is interfering?! - can you try running firefox in safemode or with all extensions disabled for a while and see if this behaviour is still there...

  • TOC Links and Bookmarks

    Hello InDesign community,
    I seek your advice and assistance with resolving an issue related to Table of Contents and Bookmarks created in books in InDesign CS6 for Mac (v8.0.1).
    I have created a book in ID which contains a few chapters. There is a TOC at the beginning of the book based on Headings created in Paragraph Styles . In TOC style, I have selected the option to create PDF bookmarks. When I have exported the book, using the book panel, I have used the following settings for interactive and print respectively.
    (I have also tried creating interactive without the 'Use Structure for Tab Order' checkbox marked)
    My problem is when one clicks on the bookmarks (in Acrobat) the bookmark navigates through the document to the respective page only, rather than to the heading which the bookmark refers. The same occurs if one clicks on the documents TOC links (that appear on page iv).
    What is even more interesting is that a colleague sent me a PDF that was created in MS Word and converted to PDF using Acrobat X and the links behave perfectly, that is, they go directly to he heading requested. ID is a a professional page layout software, yet I am unable to get bookmarks and TOC links behave in the same fashion as a PDF created by Word and Acrobat.  I must be doing something wrong....
    I looked at the bookmarks (in Acrobat) for each document and noticed some differences see pictures below.
    Properties of bookmarks created from a Word Document using Acrobat X (Windows)
    Properties of bookmarks created from Adobe InDesign
    My questions, therefore are:
    1. How can one edit the links in the document's own Table of Contents (as generated using TOC funtion of ID) so that the links link directly to the heading they are suppose to.
    2. How can one modify automatically the way bookmarks are created by ID so that they behave in the same fashion as ones created by Acrobat during Word Document conversion.
    3. What are 'named destinations' and how can one create them and/or link them to the TOC links?
    I know this sounds complicated, but I would like to be able to have users of documents click a link and be taken directly to the information they have requested to view rather than just to the page. Is this possible with ID or is it just the domain of PDF created from Word Docs (surely not?) ?
    I thank you in advance for your comments and feedback.

    What PDF are you making Interactive or Print ?
    Bookmarks and hyperlink automatically work in Interactive PDF however while making the Print PDF you have to manually check the option under "General option" in Export PDF screen to include the interactivity.

  • Cannot Export PDF with Hyperlinks and Bookmarks

    August 1, 2008
    Hi Everyone,
    I've recently upgraded to InDesign CS3. I opened a 40 page document that was completed in InDesign CS2. When I try to export to a PDF (with include hyperlinks and bookmarks) the program quits once it reaches the 5th page.
    I've tried exporting without hyperlinkes and bookmarks checked and PDFing works fine. I had no previous PDFing issues when working in CS2.
    Any suggestions/tips/guesses would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi! I need help w indesigns hyperlink...
    I am working on a long document and have 5 files, I was able to use hyperlink on each one that way the reader could jump fr one file (or page) to another. The hyperlink worked perfectly on PDF. Now I need to merge these five PDF's into 1 PDF file but the hyperlink that I have created on individual files doesnt work in a combined PDF. Is there a run-around on this? Any suggestions? I'm just new in indesign and need inputs. Thanks!

  • Making a PDF with "Outline" and Bookmarks Using Pages

    Hi, I'm using Pages 1 and I have tried making a PDF with outline breaks but I failed. I thought using paragraph styles for my document would work but when I exported my document to PDF, all I got was a PDF that only has the thumbnails view but not the outline view. Also, when I exported my document that has bookmarks to PDF, all the bookmarks don't work anymore. How can I make a PDF document using Pages with all the bookmarks and the organization just like other PDFs that I encounter? Thanks

    Hello LadyinStilettos,
    welcome to the Pages Discussions. If I remember correct, in Pages 1.x there is no way to export text links to PDF. An outline view creation doesn't exist.
    If you want to have links in PDF (of the TOC, too), then you should upgrade to iWork'06. But outline view doesn't exist here like it doesn't in version 1.x.

  • Open all links and bookmarks in a new tab

    Today I updated to FF 23.0 and Tab Mix Plus is no longer fully functional, and I had to disable it. I am trying to duplicate its functions in about:config.
    I have two issues:
    1. How can I get all bookmarks to open in a new tab on the far right? Bookmarks are opening on top of the active tab, and this I cannot abide.
    2. How can I get all links to open in a new tab? No new windows, no right-click, no over-writing the current tab... just make ALL links open in a new tab on the far right?
    Thank you.

    You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

    Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

  • How can I convert MS Word to PDF (w/ hyperlinks and bookmarks)?

    Hello,
    I have a 1000+ page MS Word document that I'm trying to convert to PDF.
    If in MS Word I select Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF my system hangs. (I've let it sit for over 2.5 hours with no progress.)
    I can easily print to a .prn file and then distill the file to create a PDF. However, when I do this method, the PDF comes through with no hyperlinks and no bookmarks. Are there any conversation settings so that this method will create the hyperlinks/bookmarks?
    Given the size of the PDF, hyperlinks/bookmarks are extremely important. Any other ideas/tips would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Kara

    Please itemize how I can convert a MS Word document into a PDF document.

  • Links and View Sizes

    Using Acrobat 8, I have a long single page document with a set of links at the top which relate to articles down the length of the document.
    When I use the link tool to set these the destination always appears at the magnification I was using when the link was created. If go back and edit the link to make the destination inherit the view that was being used when the link was clicked the link breaks because this only appears to work on multi-page documents, and the link becomes the top of page 1.
    There is a feature called destinations which allows me to jump to another part of the same page, but that only works with a single fixed magnification, so the magnification changes to whatever it was when I set the link, and there appears no way of making it inherit the magnification used at the moment the link was clicked.
    I have exactly the same problem with any bookmarks I create.
    The last time I used Acrobat to make I was using an earlier version which used a different method to define the link destination that therefore I'm pretty sure it was possible to do what I want.
    Anyone know how to achieve this in Acrobat 8 (is it possible in 9)?

    No that doesn't make any sense or answer my question either...
    I've found more problems with this since my initial post.
    In the end for the sake of getting the job live, I set my initial view to 100% and all my linked and bookmarked views also to 100%. I went into the document properties dialogue and set it to resize the window to the initial page on opening the document.
    However on the next opening of the PDF although the initial view of the document was 100% all my link and bookmark views were now something like 55%. From what I could see it appeared that these had scaled down in proportion from the document window size (full wide screen) to the size the window was when reduced to fit the document at 100%.
    So of course I had to go through all the links and bookmarks again and reset them to 100% at the new window size.
    Either this whole concept of document view sizes is massively flawed and Adobe are ignoring the problems or Adobe's ideas of how links and views should work are completely different from mine (and many other users) in which case I would like them to explain their thinking behind how this works so maybe I can understand it too.
    For me a new link should always inherit to current magnification unless the author deliberately overrides this. That's certainly how I'd want to be navigating around a PDF.
    I the absence of any useful advice or rational from Adobe, I guess my next course of action will be to ask embarrassing questions at the next trade show where Adobe have a stand...

  • Links to named destinations in IFRAME positioning the PDF a page and half past

    I created a PDF file w/ named destinations so that I can allow the Internet user w/ browser and Acrobat Reader plug-in to link to specific sections of the PDF. The zoom is set to Fit Horizontally, and the position is the top of the page in my example PDF. I used Acrobat Pro 8.1 to create the PDF.
    Problem is when trying to load the PDF into an IFRAME, displayed with the named destination using a tag like:
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1000#view=FitH&nameddest=Mission" target="myframe" >Click 1 </a>
    When clicking on the link to the named destination, the .pdf is loaded or reloaded into an IFRAME and the page with the named destination is usually correctly displayed. Only in IE 6,7,8 the pdf will frequently (about 1 out of 4 times) be positioned a page and a half past the named destination.  Clicking to a different link, and then back to the original link will usually reposition the PDF correctly. Chrome and Firefox always position the PDF exactly to the named destination.  I'd like to know how to create the named destination so that it will always be positioned correctly, or to use a different link that will always position correctly.  I'm using Reader 9.1.2
    HTML:
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="-1">
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1000#view=FitH&nameddest=Mission" target="myframe" >Click 1 </a> <p>
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1100#view=FitH&nameddest=Highlights" target="myframe">Click 2 </a> <p>
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1200#view=FitH&nameddest=Trustees" target="myframe">Click 3</a> <p>
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1201#view=FitH&nameddest=Statement_of_Op erations" target="myframe">Click 4</a> <p>
    <a href="http://intranet" target="myframe">Click 5</a> <p>
    <iframe name="myframe" width="100%" height="800">
    </iframe>
    </body>
    </html>

    I'm working with Lyle on this, and I have done some additional testing.
    What I found is that the positioning for named destinations seems to work ok with IE8 when the html page and pdf file are located on one of our external web servers (rather than local intranet servers).
    I am wondering if this is due to the latency involved in downloading the file, allowing the DOM to register the plugin?
    I've posted a query at Microsoft's forum, but they are pointing me back to Adobe...saying they cannot know how the plugin handles rendering...even though I responded that it seems to work across the board with Firefox and Chrome.
    Here is my thread in the Microsoft forum.

  • Acrobat  X Pro- Need Help with Linking and creating a flyout window in PDF

    I'm trying to create a flyout window in a PDF document (Have Acrobat X-Pro) I'm not a programmer or graphics designer. Almost like a flyout or callout in a Powerpoint presentation.
    Basically I want to create multiple icon/s on the base PDF page drawing and have several links to other pictures or items that when opened, wouldn't take up the whole screen and can then be closed so you'd only be looking at the base PDF page.
    I've tried using the link tool, but only seems to let me create a small rectangle box, click on it and have a new pdf or other file window open up. This is ok, but not really what I need it to do. I want this new window (or even a flyout) to be smaller so it doesn't cover the original base PDF layer and still be able to be closed.
    - Anyone have directions on how to do that in a pdf?
    - Also, is there a way to create a custom link icon instead of that lame rectangle in the link tool?

    Yes, you can do something like that. What you would do is create a button for each image and then hide them. When I do this type of thing I place all of the buttons on a template page and then hide the template.
    You can then use JavaScript to copy the icon from any of the hidden buttons to the main button that you've set up to display the image. For example, suppose you set up 10 buttons named b1, b2, b3, ...b10. The code to copy the icon from one of them to the button used to display the image (b0) would be something like this:
    // Get the icon from the b3 button
    var oIcon = getField("b3").buttonGetIcon();
    // Get  reference to the b0 button
    var f = getField("b0");
    // Set the icon of the b0 button to the icon retrieved from the hidden button
    f.buttonSetIcon(oIcon);
    // Show the b0 button
    f.display = display.visible;
    This code would go in the Mouse Up event of the smaller button.

  • Best practice - linking to exeternal PDFs in FM and in turn, in RH

    I am using TCS2 with FM and RH.  My goal is this:
    - to create an FM doc (with multiple chapters) and links to external PDFs. When I generate the FM file as a PDF, it will correctly allow users to click on the links and view those external PDF docs.
    - import the FM doc (with multiple chapters) into RH, and create HTML webhelp. Ideally, have the imbedded links in the FM docs (to external PDFs) generate automatically in the RH doc, so that the produced HTML online help doc can have links clicked on that also open the external PDFs.
    Questions:
    -best way to do this in FM? I assume I will need to create my PDFs in a portfolio (package?) so external clients keep the documentation in the same place (otherwise the hyperlinks will break, I assume)
    -best way to have it work in RH?
    -things to watch out for?
    TIA!

    Hi there
    In Frame, do you have options to "include" files that aren't actually part of the Frame Project? (Note that I'm not a Frame user, so I'm making an assumption that it works similarly to RoboHelp and creates "projects" that are composed of smaller elements).

  • When a linked .pdf is clicked, it downloads rather than following the link and opening in another safari window.

    When a linked .pdf is clicked, it downloads rather than following the link and opening in another safari window.

    Thanks for the tip, but I had already tried this and it did not help. The File still downloads and , at the same time, a new Safari window opens - but the Safari window is blank.
    Another discussion thread related to this problem is:
    How do I prevent automatic downloading of .pdf files?
    but this deals  with Safari 5.1 which evidently has a problem with Adobe Reader.
    I am using Safari 5.0, so the suggested solutions do not apply. ( I tried them anyway, but they did not work.)
