PDF's storing in Compressed BLOB Securefile doesn't save space
Hello 1 have a Test-table in 10G with 1 LOB-segment of 1700 Mb , 1743 records with PDF's
In 11G 11.1.0.7 i create a table with SCEUREFILE in ASSM tablespace, the table is partitioned.
When 1 insert the 1743 records wioth PDF's the total segmentsize is even 1900 MB...???
Why are my PDF's not more compressed?

Hello Sushil,
i have used the securefileperformancepaper.pdf as test doument, i also simplefied the test:
1.
Inserted the pdf into a table:
declare
Dest_loc BLOB;
Src_loc BFILE;
BEGIN
INSERT INTO SNL_SCAN.DOCUMENTEN (scan_id,owner_id, document) VALUES (1,1, EMPTY_BLOB())
RETURNING document INTO Dest_loc;
Src_loc := BFILENAME ('DIR_TESTCASE', 'sec.pdf');
DBMS_LOB.FILEOPEN (Src_loc, DBMS_LOB.LOB_READONLY);
DBMS_LOB.LOADFROMFILE (Dest_loc, Src_loc, dbms_lob.getlength (Src_loc));
DBMS_LOB.FILECLOSE (Src_loc);
INSERT INTO SNL_SCAN.DOCUMENTEN (scan_id,owner_id, document) VALUES (2,2, EMPTY_BLOB())
RETURNING document INTO Dest_loc;
Src_loc := BFILENAME ('DIR_TESTCASE', 'sec.pdf');
DBMS_LOB.FILEOPEN (Src_loc, DBMS_LOB.LOB_READONLY);
DBMS_LOB.LOADFROMFILE (Dest_loc, Src_loc, dbms_lob.getlength (Src_loc));
DBMS_LOB.FILECLOSE (Src_loc);
END;
2.
created table
CREATE TABLE NOCOMP ( a BLOB)
LOB(a) STORE AS SECUREFILE

inserted 10 documents
10x-----
insert into nocomp
(select document from snl_scan.documenten where scan_id= '1');

the lobsegment is now 42,2 MB
4.

commit;
the lobsegment is now 4,25 MB
inserted another 100 rows
the lobsegment is now 42,2 MB
5.
so there is no compression.
6.
Created table with compressed LOB an DEDUPLICTION
CREATE TABLE COMP_DEDUP ( a BLOB)

Storing mp3 music on SDXC card to save space a good idea?
All,
Going to receive my first Mac (macbook pro retina) very soon and want to avoid running out of space on the 256gb ssd drive. Music and pics is the big culprits on taking up space.
What is your opinion on storing all my music and pics on a 128gb SDXC card slot in the laptop?
Any issues with slow transfer speed? iTunes going to have issues?
Thanks for your opinion.I believe this is such a hot topic and I've seen such poor information on this subject. Could someone please speak to the relative speed of the SDXC card with expert opinion? Looking to buy a MBP Retina and don't want to shell out an extra $500 for the upgrade in SSD.
The guy at the mac store said yesterday that they are going to make SDXC cards that will be flush to the side of the laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3 pages of google search engine and no real expert response yet! -
How to view PDF files strored in a BLOB column
Hi all,
I want to display a PDF file, stored in a BLOB column, in a form or through a JavaBean.
But the problem is more complicated then that. I do not want to retrieve the PDF file in the application server that show it through a browser.
Actually, I do not want users to get the entire file, I just want them to see it or print it.
I want, in fact, to display a "stream" of bytes through Oracle Forms. Not a file.
This one, sounded to be a good solution, but actually not. When the file was too big (multiple pages), the application was blocked until the entire file was loaded. And when you try to print it, it wasn't printed right. The advantage of this solution is that it is open-source so we can add methods to connect to the DB, retrieve the content of the BLOB column and displays it without downloading the file.
Here is a good solution. Really good, files are loaded quickly, the rendering is really good and the file is printed perfectly (as it was printed from Adobe Acrobat). The disadvantage of this solution is that it is not open-source and is really expansive.
As you can see, both solutions uses PJC.
So any help, any idea to solve my problem will be highly appreciated.
Thanks to all of you,
Amine
PS : I am using F&R 11gR2Not entirely. At least we came to the conclusion it doesn't make (much) sense to block the save option of PDFs if you want to allow printing them
Anyway; there is of course another possibilty: you could always write your own java bean PDF reader; there are plenty of java PDF libraries available:
Open Source PDF Libraries in Java
The easiest way would be to choose one which can open a PDF from a URL and render it; I would retrieve the image via mod_plsql using WPG_DOCLOAD and simply use the PDF library to render the PDF. No tempfiles anyway, and if you don't implement it there is also no save button.

APEX- How to open world document (and other files) stored in a blob column?
Hi,
I have an application developed in Oracle Apex 3.2.1 and RDBMS Oracle 9.2.0.8 (SUN SOLARIS SPARC 64 BITS).
I have a table called BAC_ARQUIVO, with the following structure:
CREATE TABLE BAC_ARQUIVO
(NAME VARCHAR2(4000), /* Name of the file stored in BLOB column */
SUBJECT VARCHAR2(4000), /* A brief description about this file stored */
ID NUMBER, /* An identification of this file - It´s a PK column of this table*/
BLOB_CONTENT BLOB, /* Blob field that store diferent kind of files - XLS, DOC, PPT, PDF, EXE, ZIP, etc);
MIME_TYPE VARCHAR2(4000) /* Identification about which kind of file is stored on BLOB field */
The field BLOB_CONTENT of this table can store:
- Executable files;
- MS-World Documents (DOC);
- Zip Files (ZIP);
- Ms-Excel Files (XLS);
- Ms-Powerpoint files (PPT);
- Adobe documents (PDF);
Actually, in this APEX application, i have developed a interactive Report in which the user can download these files to desktop without problems.
But now, my user would like to know if it´s possible that APEX application can OPEN some of these files stored on this BLOB column WITHOUT download it.
My user would like to see a hiperlink (or button) that, if pressed/acessed, can open a new page (or a page inside application) with the document. He doesn´t need to edit this oppened file. He only wants to see it.
For example, if the file stored in the blob column is ms-word type , so the application will open a MS-WINDOWS application with these file.
Is it possible?
I saw in this forum that it´s possible to open a file stored on "/i/" directory, but i need to open the file stored in BLOB column. I don´t want to store the file in operational system of the server.
Could any one demonstrate to me how it could be done?
Best regards,
Sergio CoutinhoHi Sergio,

Also refer the BLOB Download Format Mask :
{message:id=9716335}
Here I have given the format mask for APEX 4.0, which will slightly differ for 3.2.1 and proposed changes
in the format mask are:
1) Format Mask: DOWNLOAD
2) Content Disposition: Inline
This will be achieved with it:

Display PDF Documents Stored In Database
Hi
I apologise that this question has been asked many times, but I just do not seem to be able to find answer to my question in many other posts over the years.
We have pdf documents stored in database and wish for client to view from forms session.
I am able to use webutil_file_transfer.DB_To_Client_With_Progress to transfer to client and open using client_host('cmd /c start '||TheFile);
I am also able to view pdf documents stored on application server using web.show_document.
What I would prefer to do is:
1. Transfer file from database to application server (This is bit I cannot figure out)
2. Display from application server using web.show_document
3. Delete temporary file from application server (Also unsure how to do this)
Our users have thin clients and so in many cases do not have access or unsure where can access to store temporary file if use transfer to client method. Wish to keep temporary file activity on application server.You can combine the methods in WEBUTIL. Check this Re: Forms 10G - Saving Blob on Application Server using Java.

Error while opening PDF file downloaded from database Blob column
Hi All,
I am working on jdev 11.1.1.4.0.
In my use-case I am using filedownload Actionlistner on a link to get the PDF file stored in the database in blob field. These files are being uploaded from other use-case in adf only.
After getting the dialog box to open/save/cancel for the PDF file when i click on open then i am getting an error *'Adobe Reader could not open 'abc.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type*
or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly docoded)' for some files , and to my surprise I am able to open some files.
When I open these PDF files separately from desktop I am able to view the content of each and every file in adobe reader.
I dont know where the problem exactly lies , while uploading/downloading the file . Any ideas/thoughts to resolve this issue?
Thanks
KanikaThanks a lot Timo...!!!
I checked the PDF file downloaded directly from the blob column in DB, there only it is corrupted so must be the problem in uploading the file. I am checking the code line by line,, but no problem in setting the file content type,size etc.
Here is the code snippet ..
byte[] buff;
buff = new byte[(int)length]; -- Length is the file size
int bytesRead = is.read(buff);
for (int i = 0; bytesRead < buff.length; i++) {
// int b = is.read();
int b = is.read();
if (b == -1)
break;
buff[i] = (byte)b;
BlobDomain blobDomian = new BlobDomain((buff));
TestVORow = (TestVORow Impl)TestVO.createRow();
if(blobDomian != null) {
TestVORow.setAttachment(blobDomian);
am.getTransaction().commit();
This seems to be Ok to me..the same issue, file is still corrupting.
Any thoughts from your side ???
Thanks
Kanika
The problem is resolved.
Changes made are instead of
InputStream is;
used ... BufferedInputStream bis ;
and after
for (int i = 0; bytesRead < buff.length; i++) {
// int b = bis.read();
int b = bis.read();
if (b == -1)
break;
buff[i] = (byte)b;
bis.close(); // use this close bufferedInput Stream.
Able to open each and every file now..Thanks for your suggestions Timo and Frank.

Edited by: user_anumoses on Jan 28, 2013 11:45 AMWe were able to do the same thing with Oracle Application Server and Oracle WebLogic Server. I cannot remember how different the processes were, but it seems like they were very similar. I am going to give you the instructions on how we implemented a "Read PDF" procedure on the WebLogic Server. If you are still on the Application Server you may have to do some Google searches, but it all boils down to the mod_plsql DAD Configuration file.
Our PDF was located in a table with the following structure:
CASE_DOCUMENTS
(id_document NUMBER NOT NULL,
doc_blob BLOB,
note VARCHAR2(240),
created_by VARCHAR2(20) NOT NULL,
created_dt DATE NOT NULL,
case_id NUMBER NOT NULL,
filename VARCHAR2(100) NOT NULL)Based on that table structure we created a procedure named READ_PDF which you will reference below in the dads.conf file below:
CREATE or REPLACE procedure read_pdf (p_id_document IN number)
is
view_file blob;
BEGIN
select doc_blob
into view_file
from case_documents
where id_document = p_id_document;
OWA_UTIL.MIME_HEADER ('APPLICATION/PDF', FALSE);
HTP.P ('CONTENT-LENGTH: ' || DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH (view_file));
OWA_UTIL.http_header_close;
WPG_DOCLOAD.download_file (view_file);
END;
GRANT EXECUTE ON read_pdf TO financial_user_role -- Name of role to execute
/Basically, you are passing in one parameter and that is the primary key for your table. You are selecting the pdf stored in a BLOB for that primary key. The commands below that allow the pdf to open up so you can view it – we got this off some search we did a few years ago.
Now, you need to add logic to your Oracle Form that will call the procedure above, but the URL is based on the dads.conf file that we will set up below… Anyway, we created a button on the form module with a label of "View". In the WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger the logic looks like this:
-- The View logic uses the DAD (Database Access Descriptors) method to view a .pdf file from the form.
-- The DAD was created on WebLogic Server with the name findadgen. This allows an http request be made
-- to the database.
declare
v_file varchar2(400);
v_success boolean;
ret_val number;
v_http_link varchar2(400);
begin
-- The format of the link is as follows: hostname:port/pls/DAD_name/procedure_name
v_http_link := 'http://finas03:8888/pls/findadgen/read_pdf?p_id_document=' || :case_documents.id_document;
web.show_document(v_http_link, '_BLANK');
end;The name of our WebLogic Server is "finas03" so that is what is listed in the URL. The "findadgen" is the name of the <Location> in the dads.conf file below, the "read_pdf" is the name of the procedure we created above, the "p_id_document=" is the IN parameter listed in the READ_PDF procedure created above, and the ":case_documents.id_document" is the reference to the primary key in our Oracle Form.
For WebLogic, you can either go through Enterprise Manager (directions below) or update the dads.conf file on the filesystem directly (if you update the dads.conf file directly then skip to step 4 and ignore step 5):
1. Enterprise Manager -> Web Tier -> ohs1
2. Oracle HTTP Server (pull-down) – Administration – Advance Configuration
3. Select File – dads.conf
4. Add something similar:
# ============================================================================
# mod_plsql DAD Configuration File
# ============================================================================
# 1. Please refer to dads.README for a description of this file
# ============================================================================
# Note: This file should typically be included in your plsql.conf file with
# the "include" directive.
# Hint: You can look at some sample DADs in the dads.README file
# ============================================================================
<Location /pls/findadgen>
SetHandler pls_handler
Order allow,deny
Allow from All
AllowOverride None
PlsqlDatabaseUsername financial
PlsqlDatabasePassword sdo_3#d1
PlsqlDatabaseConnectString ffindbTNSFormat
PlsqlNLSLanguage AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
PlsqlAuthenticationMode Basic
PlsqlDefaultPage read_pdf
</Location>You are adding the <Location> section to your dads.conf file. The "finddadgen" is the name that you will reference in a change you fill make to your Oracle Form. The "financial" is the Schema, the "sdo_3#d1" is the password for that Schema, the "ffindb" is the database that the stored procedure is located on, and the "read_pdf" is a stored procedure you will have to create in order to read the pdf.
5. Press the "Apply" Button
6. Obfuscate the DAD password by running the dadTool.pl script located in $ORACLE_HOME/bin (This was done on Unix on our server with the following commands):
$> LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib;export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
$> cd $ORACLE_HOME/bin
$> perl dadTool.pl -f /u01/app/oracle/middleware/asinst_1/config/OHS/ohs1/mod_plsql/dads.conf
7. Restart the Oracle HTTP Server using Fusion Middleware Control:
Enterprise Manager -> Web Tier -> ohs1
Oracle HTTP Server – Control – Shutdown
Oracle HTTP Server – Control – Start Up
If you followed the instructions above, you should have created a stored procedure, added logic to your Oracle form to reference that stored procedure, and created an entry in the dads.conf file. Once you move the form onto the server and you restart the HTTP Service, you should be able to view a pdf that is stored in a table directly from your Oracle Form. -

CFIndex PDF files stored in the DB?
Hi all,
Is it possible to index PDF content stored as BLOB in the database, using the CF Search mechanism?
We are using the Solr engine right now, and for query based fulltext search it works like a charm, but I couldn't figure out how to do full text search for PDFs stored in the DB.
We don't have too many documents yet, under 1000, so I guess if all else fails, I *could* still write them out to a temp dir and do the indexing, and then do some custom linking to the DB code instead of the temp file, but that looks really dirty to me.
Any tips and advices will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
ZHU, JiaI don't run into this problem because I don't store PDF documents in the databse. I just store the path in the database, and leave the document in a directory.

i am building a jsp page that opens a pdf file stored in database. if column type is BLOB, i run the prepareStatement and store in a ResultSet, and then BufferedInputStream(result.getBinaryStream("FILE")). it works. page opens the pdf file.
but when column type is ORDDOC, i get this error:
Failure in java.sql.SQLException: Ongeldig kolomtype.: getBinaryStream not implemented for class oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CNamedTypeAccessor
what more do i do to get a pdf(or txt, msword..) file to jsp page and open it?

Reports JFIF image stored in a blob
Hi everyone,
I'm using forms & reports 10g release 1. I noticed that a image stored in a blob with a format of JFIF doesn't work well with in Reports. I get the rep-62203, cannot render error. When the datatype is longraw instead of blob, it works fine. But I can't use longraw, because built in in pl/sql doesn't allow to read the field passe 32K. So that's why we convert to Blob.
I made a few test: 1) I stored a simple jpg with Toad and It work fine with Reports. I stored with a form but of a format of GIF it works fine. But the JFIF just doesn't work reports. What's the problem?
How can this be solve?
I thought maybe saving the image prior calling the report into a file and then link it with report. That will be my last choice. I prefere not to got there.
Any idea?Hi,
We finnally succeeded. Dsegard gave us the right solution. <div>It was the setup of the display that was on error. We use VNC as the display. Now the display is set correctly and the reports shows up fine.
By seting REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO, It did work for both the server and the local host.
Thank you dsregard.</div> -
Opening pdf files stored on server
Hi
We have an application in which we display pdf files stored on the server.
Pdf files opens in a new browser.
User selects the invoice number from a list and based on the invoice selected, we get a pdf file from R/3 system. This file is stored in a particular folder on the server. We extract this file from the folder to show it to the user in a separate browser.
This functionality works fine in the development system but not in test system.
We have recently installed our test system and have done all required settings in config tool.
Config Tool --> Display configuration --> HttpHttps --> Root and Alias folder.
But despite this the functionality is not working.
Is there some other setting that I have missed.
Unfortunately these settings were done in the dev system by someone else and I do not have a document for it.
Can anyone help me please.
This is very urgent for me as we are plannning to migrate our production system as well. I may face the same problem over there as well.
Regards
VineetHi,
We have the same requirement at our client end. Could you please guide me for the same?

i user tow iviews with inBound and outBound plug, the first one has the fire link and the seconde an iframe witch i set source parameter to my km link where my PDF is stored. Unfortunately, the iFrame don't work correctly, and my PDF is not be displayed
Can you give some advices ?Hi
Recently in my project I came across a scenario where my Web Dynpro Project had to pick the image from KM. The images to be displayed will be placed in KM. This will avoid loading the images into the Web DynPro project. More over when you have KM installed on your EP server, one can use it for storing backend data and resources. The KM Admin will be undertaking this task of uploading the images to predefined folder structures. Through the application path to the image will be provided dynamically giving you the flexibility to decide which image to be displayed according to the business logic.
Getting an image from KM Documents to be used in Web Dynpro
Uploading files to KM repository using Webdynpro APIs
KM with WebDynpro
thanks
Suresh
