PDF's with Preview

ok i already have 3 pdf in the same file and i want to add another one but when i drag that pdf to the sidebar it makes it look hudge and the other pdf's turn really small. and they all have the same pixels

That would be the version I have installed. Did a bit more investigating... the "get info" for the PDF files says "Content Creator: Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2". They are opening as forms. I'm assuming the fact that they are PDF forms has something to do with why Preview & Mail won't display them. Still trying to search for a fix.

  • Filling out a pdf form with preview

I need to fill out some government forms which are of course in a pdf format and they want them typed.  Before i go looking for a typewriter at the antique store, isn't there a way to do it and print it retaining the forms format?  Preview will allow me to do about 3 lines and then stops allowing input.  I've tried the google crap and from there the apache odt crap.  Tried it on a PC too with growing frustration and zero accomplished.

Preview will allow me to do about 3 lines and then stops allowing input.
That is quite strange. I fill out pdf forms with Preview, and it allows me to put as much text in as I want. I wonder if the problem is something inherent in the particular form you are trying to annotate. You might try Skim ( Download Skim for Mac - PDF Reader and note-taker for scientific papers. MacUpdate.com ) which is an app I used to use to annotate pdfs until I discovered that that functionality was already present in Preview. I don't know if you can post that form here or elsewhere and I could try to annotate it with Preview.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Output is reduced in size when printing PDF documents with Preview

When I print a PDF file with Preview the printed output seems to be about 20% smaller than actual. If I print the same file with Adobe Reader for Mac the output is normal and not reduced. Other file types do not seem to have the same issue. I don't recall having this problem before I upgraded to Leopard. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Jack

    Hi Jack,
If you have a rummage through Preview's Preferences and look at the scale settings in the 'PDF' tab, do you have it set to respect the 100% scale factor of the PDF? This can sometimes affect the scaling when the PDF was formated for a different paper size from the one you're trying to print it on. If everything there seems to be ok, try comparing the two different expanded print diaogs which you receive in Preview and Adobe Reader, looking at things like scaling and paper-size again.

  • Problems merging PDF's with Preview

    Hi there,
I'm on 10.8.5, with Preview Version 6.0.1 (765.6).  I have followed all of the steps to merge pdf's. In the title bar of the document it says there are two pages.  Then I save (there is no save as command) and it only saves one page.  Is there something I'm missing or is this a bug?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks
    Shaynee

"Try showing them as thumbnails, then Edit/Select All, and then Export as PDF.
Tried this several times as well as every other export/save option. View as thumbnails in two separate documents and successfully see 1 document with 2 files listed in the left pane.
And though the export displays a completed progress bar just before it disapears and the file is created where I pointed, there is still only the bottom page of the the two thumbnails in the newly created file.

  • Problem opening PDF files with Preview

Occasionally I get this message when trying to open a PDF file in an email attachment:
"it may be damaged or use a file format that preview doesn't recognise"
However, when I open the same attachment on my iPad, using GoodReader it does open, so the file is not damaged.
The issue seems to be with Preview and started recently (after new Mac updates maybe).
I don't want to post the PDF file here since it's company property.
    Any suggestions ?

  • Super slow PDF display with Preview?

When I open a heavy PDF file (38MB, architectural drawing) with Preview it takes about 6 minutes before it is properly displayed. The Activity monitor shows that at the end it consumes 1GB of memory and another 4.4GB (!!!) of virtual memory.
How is this possible? 38MB file takes 5.4GB memory???
It is even more frustrating since my XP machine with much less memory and processor power displays the same file in less than a minute using Acrobat Reader.
Using MacBook with 2GHz Dual Core and 2GB of memory I expect Preview should do much better. Or is there a another problem with my Mac?

I installed Acrobat Reader on my Mac, which now opens the file in about 30 seconds and uses 200MB of main memory and 200MB of virtual memory.
Apple's Preview seems to take about 12x more time and memory than Reader to display the same file.

  • PDF's with Preview & Mail

I'm using a website to place orders that creates a PDF receipt for me. When I try to view those files in Preview I get "To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
For further support, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html" and not the document. They open fine in Acrobat, but when I try to attach the file to an email using Mail the same "To view..." message shows up in the email and the recipient cannot open it. Anybody having this issue or know what my problem is?

That would be the version I have installed. Did a bit more investigating... the "get info" for the PDF files says "Content Creator: Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2". They are opening as forms. • Pdf problem with Preview - how to report to Apple?

    Hi,
I have been having problems with certain PDFs and Preview. The PDFs in question are scientific papers obtained via JSTOR (they manage the supply of papers from a range of Journals). In Preview many JSTOR papers display very slowly - so slowly that scrolling through the document is not practical. In Acrobat they are displayed normally, so this seems to be a Preview problem. There seem to be no settings in Preview that seem relevant to the problem, so how can I report this problem to Apple?
    all the best,
    Jeremy Harbinson

    Hi,
So far as I can tell, I cannot attach a file to a posting to one of these discussion groups. A file which causes the problem can be found at
    http://www.jstor.org/stable/3066865
Baroli, I and Niyogi, KK (2000). Molecular genetics of xanthophyll-dependent photoprotection in green algae and plants. Philosophical Transactions: Biological Sciences, 355;1385-94
Note that the problem only seems to occur with JSTOR files: the same pdf - this time in an easily readable form, and minus the JSTOR header page - can be downloaded from the Royal Society website:
    http://journals.royalsociety.org/content/qpjabmqk0kxar5vb/
    all the best,

  • Play embedded multimedia files in PDF's with Preview?

I receive a newsletter that sometimes embeds video clips or audio clips into the PDF. I can play the embedded files correctly if I use the free Adobe Reader but I want to know if Preview can play these files also?

  • How can I format fonts when filling in PDF forms with Preview

I have been using Preview to view and fill in PDF forms.  The font that Preview uses to fill in the forms is very small and difficult to read.  I would like to make it larger to match the document font size.

Whilst in the Preview application, press "Shift - Command - A" (⇧⌘A) simultaneously to show the markup toolbar, or click View, and select "show markup toolbar". There is an icon "A" near the right hand side of the now visible markup toolbar, click this icon to reveal all the font options.

Preview is not really a PDF editor. You can do basic stuff such as add annotations, insert pages, but you cannot add hyperlinks.

  • I need help with creating PDF with Preview...

    Hello
I need help with creating PDF documetns with Preview. Just a few days ago, I was able to create PDF files composed of scanned images (notes) and everything worked perfectly fine. However, today I was having trouble with it. I scanned my notebook and saved 8 images/pages in jpeg format. I did the usual routine with Preview (select all files>print>PDF>save as PDF>then save). Well this worked a few days ago, but when I tried it today, I was able to save it, but the after opening the PDF file that I have saved, only the first page was there. The other pages weren't included. I really don't see anything wrong with what I'm doing. I really need help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't find it.  I went into advanced and then document processing but no batch sequence is there and everything is grayed out.
EDIT: I realized that you cant do batch sequences in standard.  Any other ideas?

  • Incomprehensible Editing of PDF with Preview

I used to LOVE using Preview to do simple PDF document editing .. mostly just combining PDF files together. All you had to do was drag the PDF file into the sidebar of an existing one to append them together and you were done. Perfect!
Now here is Snow Leopard and suddenly things have gone all ape-****. I can no longer figure out WHAT the side-bar is doing. I drag a PDF file into it and it seems to simply display that PDF file but doesnt combine the pages ... instead I get an incomprehensible hybrid view of two distinct PDF files kinds sorta wrapped into one view. Which I cannot seem to save and cannot seem to flatten. Save is utterly confusing ... I seem to save the file, but I only really save bits of it. I'm stumped .. Apple have taken a simple elegant model and made it virtually unusable.
What's going on here? Is there something obvious I'm missing? Does anyone have ANY idea what Apple were intending with this utterly confusing "feature" ?
