Pdf Security question

I know I cannot prevent anyone from saving a pdf file. So, this is what I wish to do. I would like to be able to give access to a pdf file that can be opened from my server and the pdf file will open without asking for a password. That is, the pdf file obtains a permission file from my server. If someone saved the pdf file, it wouldn't matter to me whether they stored it on their computer or my server as I can still control access by a time stamped access file.
So, then everyone plays nice with the pdf file, they won't have any problem. If they remove the server access portion, then they would be required to provide a password to access the file. As I understand the security issues, documents that require a password to decrypt are more difficult to remove security from than those that allow access, like limit printing, etc. If that were true, then it would also encourage readers to just play nice with my files.
Re: The Adobe Document Center, you may not "Market any goods or services for any business purpose (including advertising and making offers to buy or sell goods or services), unless specifically allowed to do so by Adobe." Why would I worry about access to something I was giving away?

Sounds like you are describing a DRM plug-in for Acrobat. These can be
produced using the SDK, and even for Reader, though there is a five
figure license fee if you want to do it for Reader.
Adobe Document Centre seems to be an implementation of Adobe's
LiveCycle Policy Server. While Policy Server is a heavyweight server
product used mainly by corporates, this is a copy of Policy Server run
on Adobe's servers and administered by them. This is clearly going to
have a different licensing model and may suit smaller enterprises
better.
Could you give a little more context about the second question. Is
this a question about yourself (why would *I* worry), or is it
actually asking why Adobe would worry?

Printing and Signing PDF Security Questions

Hi,
I noticed one of the PDF security features for Acrobat 8.0 is to set the printing permissions between "None", "150 DPI", and "High Resolution". However, when I print between two PDF's with 150 DPI and max resolution, I honestly can barely notice the difference between the two (the 150 DPI is "slightly" worst, i.e. letters are slightly more jaggedly). I was wondering is this normal, as I was hoping the lower setting would make the printout hard to read, not just a "quick-print" (I used a Laser Printer with 1200 DPI). I don't mean to make a big deal out of it, but I personally do not think this a very useful feature from a security standpoint.
Secondly, I'm having trouble creating signable PDF's. I basically want the file to only allow a user to sign, and nothing else, so I set the "Changes allowed" to just "filling in forms and signing existing signature fields". But doesn't seem to work, because instead I have to set it to allow "any except extracting page". Only then can I sign the PDF, but then this also allows it to be changed (which I don't want). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? Any help is appreciated!

It's a very common question, and as Michael says there's not a lot you can do. Even doing the imposition yourself is unlikely to help, as most commercial raster image processors (RIPs - the software which turns your document with its fonts, graphics etc into the pattern of dots needed to physically generate the image on the printing drum) need unencrypted files.
If the print shop has an ad-hoc workflow which supports encryption (such as printing direct from Acrobat in the way desktop users do), there are plugins for Acrobat to handle the page imposition; but it's not something native to the application and the printer will have to give you very precise directions as to what layout to create. Many print shops won't entertain that idea unless there's an overriding commercial reason, as it's too much hassle for them to deal with errors in the client plates. Worth asking, but I doubt they'll agree to it.
Given the need to send unsecured files to an external contractor for printing, your "protection" is in the form of the contract, not digital encryption. The former can be settled in court if they break the terms, the latter can be bypassed in ten seconds and you'll probably never know. If the files are truly too sensitive to send to anyone, it's time to get yourself a laser printer - these days the machines many local print shops rely on are in essence a color photocopier, and you can rent them for about the same price.

PDF Security Questions

Hi All,
I have several questions about the PDF security:
1. Does anybody know any good pdf security web seminars? Please give me the link.
2. I sell my journals (pdf version) to my clients but I want to prevent them from copying my journals to the others (FYI, I have adobe Pro). I would like to restrict my clients to open the pdf only in their computers not the others. How can I use adobe to do that? Would you please suggest any security options that I can use?

Adobe security is mostly honored only by other Adobe products. It doesn't matter what steps you take in Acrobat, they can be bypassed in less than a minute by free, easy to find applications.
If this is really a concern, you wil want to look in to a Digital Rights Management solution. Adobe DOES have a solution available but I won't speak for the quality of it since I have never used it.

PDF Security: A Question

I am searching for a 3rd party company that provides pdf password protection - pdf encryption. I am aware: nothing is hacker-proof. I just want a deterrent. I don't want a high end DRM company. I'm hoping to find a 3rd part product that fulfills the following criteria. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
A. GENERAL IDEA: password protection that ties pdf file to the individual computer and prevents them from illegal sharing. (I don't care if they modify or print)
B. User inputs password only once (unlike Adobe's), the first time he opens pdf file.
C. User cannot duplicate file and place on another computer and/or place on a CD or other removable medium (and still have it function).
D. Work across PC and MAC platforms
E. Different password generated for each document
F. Password protection works within the PAYLOADZ/PAYPAL environment (PAYLOADZ is a company that downloads a copy of the pdf file (original sits on a server), to user, as soon as Pay Pal confirms payment.)

Passwords tend to be forgotten easily and are a support nightmare and if licensing control is not used then there is nothing to stop users sharing them.
We looked at several DRM companies as part of a consultancy project for a client. FileOpen was complex and their history of security incidences looked rather shady. We talked to a couple of their customers who had endless problems when Adobe and Microsoft updated their software and after trying out the software ourselves gave it a bigs thumbs-down. We also looked at Armjisoft (don't think they actually have any customers) and their 'security' seemed rather dubious with a plug-out design, and LockLizard who use their own viewer. Most of the other companies we looked at did use passwords but did not prevent them from being shared - so there was no point in pursuing these further. We ended up recommending LockLizard to our customer based on feedback from their customers and our own use of the software - also it did everything our client required. Their pricing starts at $2495 which is a lot cheaper than some of high DRM companies who tend to specialize in document collaboration with PDF security on the side. However If you have $65,000 to spare you could always look at Adobe Policy Server. After all, this is an Adobe forum!

PDF.js removing PDF security

PDF.js is not considering the enabled PDF security. The functionality what i want to achieve is to control the print to file option using tools like CutePDF. If a user tries to print the PDF to a file and PDF is created by setting encryption is opened in Adobe reader, the saved PDF will be blank. But this is not happening in PDF.js and it is saving the content of the PDF. Can this be handled in PDF.js?

Acrobat Pro 8, PDF security: Is it possible to allow printing, but forbid editing?

Hello everybody! I have a question concerning the PDF security settings. We are using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 (CS3) on an Mac OS X 10.4.11 system.
When creating a PDF, is it possible to...
...permit printing AND enable reading aids BUT forbid editing (like copying text)?
Or can I only either permit all OR forbid all?

Okay, I solved it myself. :-)
I had set the "PDF compatability" to "1.4". This removes the a.m. option. So now, I have set it to "1.5" (or even another later standard), and can now allow printing AND allow reading aids BUT forbid copying text.

Trying the stop the "Adobe PDF – Security" popup message

I'm using MS-Access to create multiple PDF reports, occasionally the whole process stops because of the “Adobe PDF – Security” popup message asking to “Select Document Components to Encrypt”. We do not encrypt any of the PDF documents, and always hit the Cancel button. It’s a pain when we run reports during the night as the whole process stops waiting for a reply to the encryption message. Does anyone know how to stop the popup message ???

I forgot the answers to my security questions. How can I reset these?

After owning an iPad 2 for about 7 months, I purchased an iPad 3rd gen. I tried to purchase an app (PDF Highlighter) and upon doing so I was promoter to answer two security questions "since this is my first purchase on this device." I do not remember the answers to my security questions. How can I reset the answers?
In addition to this issue, I went into my setting and entered my debit card information in another attempt to purchase the app. Upon doing so I was prompted to verify my payment info. The prompt asked me to enter my security code. I entered the correct code and it comes up invalid. I have tried going into setting and verifying my payment info through there as well, it also says my security code is invalid. How can I fix this issue? The app I am attempting to download is called PDF Highlighter for $6.99. Thank you for your help.

If you have a rescue email address set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address set up then go to Express Lane and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Questions' or 'iTunes Store account security' (it appears to vary by country) and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox)

My iPad wont let me download apps bc security questions, but when I try to make them it freezes

The new questions show on your account on http://appleid.apple.com ? If they do then try logging out and back into your account on your phone (assuming that is where you are trying to purchase from) and see if the new questions then show on it.

How do I delete an Apple iCloud account from my iPhone without password, security questions, or email?

For some reason, an old iD is stuck on my phone. My iPhone 4s is nearly filled with documents and data, to the point where I cannot take pictures, and I can't reset it without using this old iD. I don't know why this is now popping up instead of the one I am registered with. I gained access to the old email the iD is under, but none of the iTunes emails are coming in so I assume it is set up under a different email. For the security question of birthdays, I tried every household member's birthday, and none worked. I have tried the password we used on that account when it was active, along with every other possiblility. I don't know what to do anymore and I have very limited use of my phone if I don't get this sorted out and deleted from my phone.

How can I access my iCloud email account when I don't remember the password and Apple won't accept the answer to my security question?

I set up an email account with " @me.com". I get a wrong password message when I try to log in. When I try to change my password I get an INcorrect answer message to the security question I'm asked my birth date so I know I have it right, unless I did a typo when I set up the account. When I choose email me the reset password lnk I cannot retrieve the email because it won't accept the password. I wanted to justemail Apple for instructions but cannot find an email address for that. You need to contact Apple to get the questions reset, which can be done by clicking here and picking a method for your country, or if that's not an option, by filling out and submitting this form.
