(PDF) Should line art require so much disk space?

Hi,
When I save Photoshop files to PDF for easy transport to the printers, and I make sure all the text remains vector (not rasterized), the document becomes unnecessarily bloated.
(NOTE: When I say vector, I don't mean including the fonts. I mean tracing the text shapes and keeping it all as uneditable line art.)
This is a surprise to me, because we're talking about vector/line, here. Not pixels. Why does a page full of line-art text require so much disk space? Am I doing something wrong?
There's a text document I'd like to save and place online, and I couldn't imagine it requiring more than 500k - 900k... but as long as I keep the text vector, I can't get it under 3-4 megs.
I just need confirmation that this is normal, and something I have to live with if I want to keep the text un-rasterized.

I think you might be right. I ended up formatted the disc then creating a brand new fresh back up which worked. Now it seems to be restoring in the correct manor.
Thanks for your assistance

All of it.  Put them on a large disk (500GB or more) and just let PP take care of the rest.

  • How much disk space for RT OS

    Hi all
RT OS (Desktop) has a problem: If disk is full RT OS won't start.
So I have to limit the amount of file output of my RT application to a reasonable value.
To do this I read free disk space at start of my application (using GetFreeDiskSpaceEx), so I can enshure that MY apllication will not write more data than available space (e.g. by deleting old data).
But I don't know how much disk space the operating system will need while running.
Can anybody tell me a value to calculate with?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A general rule of thumb is that the OS needs roughly 25MB of storage for temporary files, .ini files, persistent storage, and the like.  Don't suck your usage below 25MB and you should be able to minimize your surprises.
NOTE:  This number was obtained empirically via not-so-stringent testing.  Your mileage may vary.

  • How much disk space to allocate?

    Hi,
I just got a NAS that supports Time Machine. It allows me to allocate disk space just for Time Machine.
The NAS has 1.5TB disk. My Macbook Pro has a 300GB disk and currently is about 60% full.
Planning also for the future, how much disk space to you recommend to allocate in the NAS for Time Machine?
    Thanks

Most of us don't. Your NAS may claim that it supports TM, but Apple doesn't. TM does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or external drives attached to another Mac running Leopard on the same network. It will back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and requires a running a Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless when you need them the most.
If you still think this is a good idea, TM usually requires 2-3 times the space of what it's backing-up to work well. See item #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • How much disk space does a typical system start up disk use?

I am trying to partition a 640 GB hard drive for my 17" MacBook Pro. I created a partition of 30GB for the "System Start Up Disk", and after installing the original Tiger OSX software, and then doing the Leopard Upgrade Install, It says that I am out of disk space on that partition.
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
How about disk space for Applications?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Why do you want to partition that disk?

When not booted from that drive (meaning, I believe, that it's not allocating swap or page space) my OS X 10.5 system uses 68.4 GB, including 10 GB for applications, 2.5 GB for the Developer folder, and 25.5 GB for user folders.

Try running XP in a VM or aquire Windows 7 which is the only one supported now.
And you will need more like 60GB for Windows 7, so I would skip on 20GB just to be safe.
20G is a fine minimum for XP, I was not responding to any inquiry about Win 7.

  • If photos are in more than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?  is there a way to eliminate all duplicates without doing it one by one?

If photos are inmore than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?
Is there a way to eliminate duplicates without doing it one by one?

A photo exists in only one event.  However, it can be in multiple albums, slideshows, books, etc. without taking up any additional disk space.
If you truly have duplicates in iPhoto, not as viewed via the Finder  you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • How can I find out how much disk space I have free?

I want to download a large file from the internet (22.21 GB). I have deleted everything on my computer that I don't think is necessary to keep, but how do I find out exactly how much disk space my computer has free so I can download?

    Hello again Rolanda,
Barry is right on the money here ( Hello Barry! )
You need to delete / remove some files off that computer as soon as possible. Start with things you never use. Then onto things that can easily be replaced.
I would not even attempt to copy to CD's until you have at least 5 or 6 GB free!
Post back if you need more.

  • I Have Logic 9. How much disk space will LP X add?

    Hi,
just curious... I have LP 9 on my computer, and my disk is getting, well, fuller (250G or so left). How much disk space will be taken if install LP X next to LP 9? Am I correct that LP X will re-use the old libraries and just adds new content to it? Just curious how much my HD will shrink...
For the time being, I want to keep LP9 alongside LP X for old projects with 32 bit plugins.
    Thnx, Jaap

Well... I took the plunge... it seems that the additional content is around 20...25 GB.
When I first installed LP X and opened one of my LP 9 projects, the instruments sounded like toy instruments. LP X obviously didn't "know" yet that the HQ samples were already on my harddisk. After I started downloading the additional content LP X apparantly checked what it needed, and suddenly my old projects sounded fine.

  • How much disk space is required by certain programs (sources)/DDIC-Objects?

    Dear experts,
a customer asks for information about the disk space that his SAP-system will additionally require for the installation of the program packages that he is about to purchase from us. To make a long story short: I have no idea how to decently answer that quesion!
I can imagine that there are SAP standard programs that provide an answer to that question.
Does anybody have a hint on how to answer that?
    thanks in advance
    Andreas

Very strange question by your customer, normally development objects take only a fraction of the space compared to application data, and also normally any box should be maintained to have enough free space for another say 10% growth of the overall database, so a few extra development objects should not matter.
An indicator might be the size of the transport request data file, multiplied by a factor unknown to me.
You can also check in the SAP Netweaver Administrator forums.
