PDF size and compression

Hello, I hope I'm not in the wrong forum for this. I am using a multi function printer/scanner to create multi page PDF's. Due to email server restrictions the PDF's cannot exceed 10 meg. For some reason this seems to hit when the PDF has scanned 30 pages and shows as a approx 7 meg in size.
I scan at 200 dpi which is the min res required for the recipients. The 30 page limit is a tough number to deal with as most scans need to be in the 150 page range. I had resigned myself to having to send 4-5 files to get each item across when I started receiving scans of 40-50 pages that only showed as approx 2 meg in size but showed as good if not better resolution.
Is there a compression utility or fix that can allow the high page count in a 2 - 3 meg file? These are scanned files and not generated word documents.
Thank you

Thank you all for your help, unfortunately, the files need to remain in pdf format.. and it is being put into PDF by a Samsung multi function machine. I do not have access to the specific software used by the machine, and although it does allow different formats, they do not seem to be the most efficient, from a size standpoint. I've tried to see if there were software upgrades, but without luck. I was hoping there might have been a fix or after market program that would tighten up the pdf, without changing to zip format.

  • Pdf discolored and compressed

Frequently, when I open a .pdf, the pages are compressed horizontally and the coloration is incorrect. If I zoom in, the .pdf will eventually render itself properly. I haven't been able to isolate conditions that cuase this, but in one instance it occured when I maximized the window but not when the window was smaller.
Here is an example. It should be a landscape 8.5x11 page, but you can see the horizontal compression. The discoloration is not as apparent, but it almost looks like every 3rd column of pixel is missing or something.
    Anyone familiar with this?

The problem seems to only occur during forced sizing of the window, e.g. maximize or Windows Snap resizings.

  • Maintaining HD frame size and compressing to MPEG2?

    Hi all...
Doing my first DVD Pro project and learning... Here is my problem... The quicktime files coming out of FCP are 720p and I´d like to maintain that size when doing my SD DVD. In Compressor I choose the setting "Best Quality DVD 90 minutes" and when adding that setting to the file to be converted I see that the frame size is 720 x 576, of course the resulting conversion looks great but in a different frame format. I go to the codification tab. I tried to change the sequence use to HD DVD or generic in order to change the video format to 720p, but the resulting file won´t be importable into DVDPro, and the SD DVD sequence use won´t let change to the 720p format or any other... Cam somebody give me a hand please?
    Thanks a lot....

The quicktime files coming out of FCP are 720p and I´d like to maintain that size when doing my SD DVD
But 720p is HD - not SD, so how are you going to reconcile that fact? Hmmm?
Since DVD is standard definition only, if you want to deliver a DVD disc that will play in DVD players it MUST BE standard definition.
If you want to deliver HD content on optical disc, you'll need to create a Blu-ray disc, and of course, you'll need a Blu-ray burner.

  • How can I reduce a fotobook pdf size for online printing

    Hello aperture,
I have been creating a large customer book (33 x 28 cm) with aperture.
I'm working with RAW datas and the fotobook has got around 150 pages.
My online printing office accepts only PDF X3 2002 datas and I can get this with adobe acrobat X Pro.
I print the book in aperture an save it as an Adobe PDF and than, I can save the datas as a PDF X3:2002. It works perfectly.
My problem is that the online printing office accepts only 2 GB and my pdf, which I've printed with aperture, has got around 7 GB.
What can I do in aperture to reduce the pdf size and get a smaller one?
My aperture settings for Export is: 300 dpi.
    Thanks for you help,
    Best

Actually in LR4 and Camera Raw 7 in Photoshop CS, you CAN create a downsampled DNG by using the Lossy Compression method of converting to DNG. In the LR 4 Export, select DNG then you have the ability to specify long dimensions or the size in Megapixels. Note, a Lossy DNG isn't un-demosiaced, it's been demosiaced but is still stored in Linear Gamma, so it's like a partially baked file, not a true unbaked raw file.
Note, in Camera Raw 7 when you set up your save dlog, it's a bit different. You select Lossy DNG and then have a dropdown for size presets...
Couple of things about the Lossy DNG, you SHOULD name it to distinguish between the downsampled DNG and your original DNG...you don't want to get into the situation where you overwrite your original. Also note that some things won't work totally as expected. For example, sharpening and noise reduction will be working but on a downsampled file. While the numbers will correlate, the actual effects will be a bit different because it's a downsampled file and more prone to potentially over sharpening. It all works, and the controls will work fine if you work at 100% zoom, but don't expect the high resolution your original file had.

  • PDF Size is huge when inserting an image on every page

    Hello,
I've got a little problem when inserting an image in a crystal report and then exporting it to PDF.
We're using Crystal Report XI and we've designed the report with a sub-report that gets an image from a database field and put this image on every page of the report (it's just a logo for every page).
This image is a JPEG file with 32KB size.
The exported report is about 1000 pages and we're dealing with an issue because of that. Sometimes the report won't generate giving a OutOfMemory Exception (altough we've defined MinHeap/MaxHeap to 512M).
We also find this curious :
    - A generated pdf report with the image on every page totals 100MB size (we would expect something like 32KB*100pages=32000KB/1024KB=31.25MB ?) : Depending on the number of pages, could give OutOfMemoryError.
    - A generated pdf report without the image on every page totals 1.8MB size. : No OutOfMemoryError problem here.
Do you know of any way to optimize this, reducing the pdf size and ?
    Thank you very much.

    Hello Ted Ueda,
Thank you for your answer, I was suspecting that...
Since this is an obvious problem, do you know if there is another way of including an image in the report in a more efficient way ? For instance, include the image, only on the first page and on the rest of the pages just include a link to that image?
I've searched in here : https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/x/JwBmBQ , but did not find anything close to this...
    Thank you.

  • How to reduce size or compress PDF files?

    Hi guys,
Does someone knows if there is a way  to reduce the size of the PDF file with good quality even on Pictures and Scanned documents? I know the option 'export', 'quartz filter' 'reduce size', but the compression is so extrem. Many files can't not been read, the quality is so bad. Is there a additional app, software or extension that let the user play with the compression on pdf files and let it be more personalized like the dopdf V7 available for windows? i am very dissapointed with this. Please help or suggestion. I will appreciate it. Thanks

I have used the excellent PDF Toolkit app for a while, and its preformed well. Occassionaly it makes the document into a negative image...which Im noyt sure why...
Mathishk, im trying your online version out, and am impressed and admire the fact that you have done this.
    Well done.
A TRICK i use often. Once all hires images are on the designed document - and its coming in at 15-20mb, just change the link to the images so they are 'missing' then make a pdf.
i.e 'Hi Res images' to HRes images - old'
The screen resolution of images is still great, but file comes in at fraction of the size.
You 'trick' the document to use screen images only. So my 18mb file comes in as 5.2mb.
Just remember to change the images folder name back, so files relink.

  • Can I improve PDF OCR accuracy and compression ratio by running it through Acrobat X Std or Pro?

I scanned a book and stored the PDF file with minimal OCR and low compression using mp ex navigator v1. Can I use Acrobat X Standard or Acrobat X Pro to take that PDF file and improve both the OCR accuracy percentage AND the compression ratio, and then it in a new PDF file?
I am running Windows 8 64-bit.  It may or may not matter, but I have Office 2010.

I purchased Acrobat Pro XI last month to try to digitize all my text books (Scanned as TIFF and imported to PDF).  I've been pretty unimpressed in general.  Specifically to your question, it seems that if a page has a photo on it or some complex image, Acrobat won't deskew it.  My version updated just today to 11.0.06 and it still has this problem.  I think it does deskew when "Apply Adaptive Compression" is selected because that option causes each page to be broken into parts (text/image).
Just incase you haven't tried, on the Optimize Scanned PDF dialoge box, make sure the slider is set to "High Quality" instead of "Small Size", that may help with the image quality.  In my tests, I ended up leaving it turned up all the way.
I have finally put together a workflow to deal with the problem.  I use Acrobat to extract each page as a TIFF to a separate directory.  I use a third party program to deskew and crop the images.  I use Acrobat to reassemble them into a PDF.  I use Text Recognition/In this File (Searchable Image Exact) to do OCR.
I am pleased with the results though Acrobat tries to OCR a lot of images and I just get a bunch of jumbled invisible text on my images.  I don't mind it though cuz it's invisible, but pretty pathetic given the cost of this product.
I'll mention the third party program I use in a post below because I don't know if I'm allowed to post it or not.  I just don't want this post to be deleted for mentioning another program.
    Hope this helps others.

  • Reduce File Size and Optimise PDF both increase file size

    Hi All
I have exported a pdf (our college mag) at smallest file size from Indesign CS4 for online use. The problem is the resultant file size is a little under 19Mb. Using both or either Reduce File Size or Optimise functions simply result in an increase to 22Mb. The document is packed with images however I would have thought one or both of these processes would have helped reduce the file size to a more manageable download file size.
A pdf is also produced to go to print so simply compressing all images prior to imcuding them in Indesign is not a preferable option - this would mean creating two separate Indesign documents, something which I would rather avoid if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.
The file reside here if anyone cares to take a look http://www.ayrcoll.ac.uk/index.php?name=UpDownload&req=viewdownload&cid=11&orderby=dateD  It's the latest release (September 09)
    Thanks

You might want to do an audit of the PDF (button in PDF Optimizer) and try to figure out what the various parts are. It shows 58% is content streams (sorry, but I am not sure what that is), 26% is overhead, and only 12.7% is graphics. Since you are not storing bookmarks and such, you might want to try going back to ID and printing to the Adobe PDF printer for a comparison. It may be one technique is more efficient than the other.
When I used the optimizer, the file did get larger. When I used Reduce File Size, it got slightly smaller. The key may be in figuring out what the various parts are from the audit. You might try copying one page of ID to a new document and play with various versions - different fonts (all were embedded and that is probably best), variations on graphics, etc. That is all I can suggest since I would simply be playing with different ways to produce the document and looking at what is causing the bloat. When the Images are only 12.7% and the fonts less than 1%, there is something going on to produce the size, and those 2 are typically the killers. I would mention tags that tend to bloat, but you do not have any (normally used for assessibility).
You might want to try some of the preflight checks to find issues. I did the transparency check and got 170 instances in 22 pages. Flattening the page may help. There were some pages that seemed to be very bad. However, I did not get a big file size reduction. I did not get a lot of improvement by printing to a new PDF either. Certain pages seem to be part of the bloat problem. The print took a long time around pages 11 and 22.
One troubleshooting technique would be extract pages to separate files and look at the details of each page to see what is causing the issue.
    Need to go. Good luck.

  • Reducing pdf size - compressing images

    I have a word document with a lot of images. the doc has 2.3 mega but the pdf gets around 8.5 mega; I've tried many settings in Adobe PDF but I cannot reduce the pdf size;
    thank you

If you are using WORD 2003 or later, you can click on one of the images to get the format menu, select compress in the lower left corner, and compress the graphics in the WORD file. If you want to keep the original, do this on a copy (good idea anyway) and then create the PDF using the Adobe PDF printer. You may be getting the size due to features added by PDF Maker if you are using that.
Within Acrobat, your options are either FILE>Reduce File Size or the PDF Optimizer. You can also just print to a new PDF. A lot depends on how you created the PDF and you provided no info there. Also, what OS and version of Acrobat?

    Dave,
Thanks for the reply. Of all the suggestions I've received this seemed to
be most promising. I gave it a try and the problem is that when I attempt
to save as optimized a message box pops up and says I have to save my
document first. Low and behold when I save it, compression occurs. Even
when I select the options you suggest I'm left with a compressed document.

Subject:        Is it possible to create and save a .PDF
without any compression to the resulting .PDF?
You don't want the UncompressPDF plugin - that's designed to split out the
COS objects but doesn't remove the Flate encoding (plus if you've never
compiled a plugin before, it's not really the time to learn).
Instead, simply save your PDF file using the PDF (Optimized) file type,
click the Settings button and under "Clean Up" - "Object compression
options", choose "Remove compression". Turn everything else off if you
want to retain the PDF content exactly as it was before.
Your document-level scripts will then be in the file as plain text.

No, there isn't. The way you're using the file is not recommended. You
should use a review tracker to avoid getting in the way of one another.
