Pdf slideshow in LR1.3.1 appalling resolution

There is something seriously wrong with the downsizing of images for a slideshow exported to pdf.
I exported using 1024x768 as the chosen resolution. On viewing the pictures looked horrid, so I repeated the export but with jpg quality set to 100%. Same result.
I used Advanced/Document processing/Export all images in Acrobat Professional to get hold of the jpgs that LR had written into the pdf. They looked horrid too, thus confirming it wasn't a problem in Acrobat.
A typical jpg is <a href="http://www.brisk.org.uk/pics/ss_Page_01_Image_0001.jpg">this one (716 KB)</a>. View this at 100% on your screen to see how horrid it is.
These jpgs are 1024x768 as requested, but have a black border. I measured the height of the photo as 161mm and that of the whole image as 195mm on my screen. Thus the photo itself is 768 x (161/195) = 634 pixels high. So I exported the original image from LR into Photoshop CS3 and downsized it there to 634 pixels high.
That can be seen <a href="http://www.brisk.org.uk/pics/ssps.jpg">here (83 KB)</a>. View this on your screen at 100% and it will be exactly the same size as the photo that LR wrote into the pdf, BUT it will look much better!
What on earth is going on?
Edit: sorry I don't know how to post links on this forum, and the help file does not enlighten me.

Yes, I've tried rendering standard sized previews and also rendering 1:1 previews, but it makes no difference. On my Pc, which is a fast dual core, the standard sized ones are always there instantly. The actual slideshow export to pdf uses both cpu cores flat out for 30 seconds or so, so I guess it's doing the downsizing there, rather than from the previews.

  • Trouble Creating .pdf Slideshow

I can not successfully create a pdf slideshow. Whether I select 25 or 2 photos, I tried creating a pdf slideshow using each of the three optons given for "Size and Quality" (Optimize for viewing on screen, Optimize for printing or Use full resolution). All appears to go well and I receive the "The PDF has been created. Would you like to view it?" prompt. After selecting yes to that prompt, I temporarily see the first photo in the Adobe Reader window and then the display goes black. Nothing happens until I select the "esc" key. Then the Adobe Reader window reappears with the Adobe Photoshop Album message window indicating "The sender has created this slideshow using Adobe Photoshop Album.....do more with your digital photos!" This message window give options to download PSASE free, play the slideshow or exit. Selecting play obtains same result as before. I have re-downloaded PSASE at least 2x.
Any hints on how to correct?
    Thanks

I have Adobe Reader Version 7.0.8.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I am able to open pdf slideshows sent from others problem free.
    Thanks

  • How to View PDF slideshow created with Adobe Photoshop Album?

Many years ago during the Windows ME era, I created several short PDF slideshows with software (Adobe Photoshop Album) that included audio.  I saved them to a flashdrive.  I believe I used Adobe Reader 7 to play them years ago.  I am now running Windows 7 and attempted to open/play the videos and all I could see is the individual slides with no audio.  Is there a way to view these slideshows with audio today?  Some of them have special meaning and I would appreciate any assistance on how to view them once again.

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Photoshop Ablum Starter Edition forum, where you'll get more specialized help.

  • PDFs are low res even with Fixed Resolution deselected

    Motion 5.0.6
I am working on a project with a single pdf file imported from Illustrator. There are no other layers in the file, the pdf has no filters applied and Fixed Resolution is selected off. Render is set to Full resolution and Quality to Normal. For some reason the image displays in low resolution when I zoom in. Any ideas? Thanks.

When no camera is present, you simply scale the PDF image, or you can manipulate the Position.Z paramater.
Fixed Resolution is Motion's way of keeping the brakes on a file that has potential for unlimited resolution. It's a safety net designed to keep performance reasonable.
When a PDF is imported, it comes into Motion with the document dimensions with which it was created, and Motion will render it on the canvas with those dimensions and set the resolution of the image with those dimensions. As long as Fixed Resolution is checked, it will be treated as a standard image even though it might contain vector shapes.
You have the option of unchecking Fixed Resolution, which will unleash your PDF on Motion and possibly affect the performance of the application (PDF vectors can consume huge amounts of video RAM especially when scaled to very large sizes.)
Another way to go, without unchecking Fixed Resolution is to change the dimensions of the PDF document, and Motion allows you to do that from within the application.
Below is a PDF I imported. Note the dimensions of 298x278:
(The Media tab is selected and the PDF layer is also selected -- then in the Inspector, the Media tab is where you'll find these controls [along with the Fixed Resolution checkbox... for those who might not know how to get to it])
Scaling the image greater than 100% in the canvas will result in softening of the image (like any other plain image) with fixed resolution on.
Below, I have modified the Fixed Width and Fixed Height (dragging one will automatically change the other based on the Pixel Aspect Ratio setting.)  In this example, I have reset the Fixed Width to 2000.0.
I can now resize (scale) my PDF up to the dimensions I have set with Fixed Width/Height -- with Fixed Resolution still on, and still maintain a pristine vector appearance of the image (as long as the Canvas view is at 100% or less).
It still limits the PDF vectors to reasonable limits and allows you to get the smooth line appearance you expect from vector shapes.
PS - You could even take advantage of the Fixed Resolution degrading the image as it gets "closer" in view by tweaking those parameters to create the illusion of losing focus.

  • Can I convert a pdf slideshow with narrative to a movie file?  Using Pro version 8

I am working with a template software (Vacation Bible School) where I insert pictures and at the end, it plays a slideshow with narrative (already in the template) when you open it up and hit the spacebar.  it works fine, but there are 5 different files and the company we got the template/pdf files from suggest for presentation purposes, I should just open up each file individually and start the slide show.  it seems kind of clumsy having to open up each file individually, play it, close it and then go to the next file.  It would be great if I could capture the slideshow as a movie file, then combine all 5 movie files into one file that can be played on a CD player (I use Sony Vegas studio and Nero software for this).  I am using Acrobat Pro version 8.  Any suggestions?

It can't be done in Acrobat.
I just did a Google search on "pdf slideshow to video" and saw a couple of third party products that claim to be able to do it. I have never had a need for that, and can't claim how well they work.

  • How can I put captions in a pdf slideshow in Photoshop Elements 13?

How can I put captions in a pdf slideshow in Photoshop Elements 13?

Tags are independent of PDF page content. Removing/deleting a page or page(s) does not remove anything in the PDF's structure tree.
As Full Check is looking at the structure tree the report reflects what is present there.
In the Tags panel walk the structure tree to locate the Table tags. Delete these.

  • Pdf slideshow from PS CS4 - not bridge/output!

Does anyone know if I can get it back in the automate settings, perhaps as a legacy function?
I've just downloaded the PS CS4 and LR2 trials (and using the beta LR2.2 and beta ACR) as my PS CS2 and old raw plugin don't open my new cameras images.
imho I don't think they've really thought it through from a workflow pov, I provide both contacts and a pdf slideshow to my clients. If I use the bridge/output method for both on every job - and all the swapping over of the options that entails I will be smacking my head off the nearest wall after a couple of days.
The bridge/output also limits my choices severely - I thought the idea of upgrading was to IMPROVE functionality......... I'm not usually a grumbler, but I'm about to pay an upgrade price of nearly a grand (in £'s - not $!) essentially for a lovely raw plugin and nice LR2 web galleries - it's not looking like a particularly good deal :-(
I've found the "PS CS4 goodie" folder on the adobe site and installed the contact sheet II option into the automate area - it's just not practical for me to have a set of contacts in pdf format, it's definitely a step backwards for me.
I'd hoped for an improvement, with options to include a title, date etc - but nope.
I'm also not happy with the pdf slideshow in bridge/output - I miss the compression options, I often need to keep them small on the file front - whilst keeping the screen looking good (150ppi compression works well) - which I don't have the ability to do this in cs4, constraining to screen size choices with a "high" or "low" option is useless to me. I just don't get it - this is pro software - with a pro price - is it too much to ask for more pro workflow considerations? Come on Adobe, play the game......
Apologies for the rambling rant and general grumpiness - all help & suggestions very much appreciated :-)

I found an answer to my own question. A work around of sorts.
Download Photoshop Elements 6 for Macintosh. With PSE6 I made a slide show with 550 images 1920x1200, without thumbs. I ran into one problem making the slide show. My images contained 4 images which had not ben created by Photoshop and could not be included in the slide show. Opening the images in Photoshop CS4 and re-saving them still did not make then acceptable. Not a big deal. I probably could have fixed the four images by stripping all EXIF data before opening them in Photoshop. BTW, PSE6 made the slide show in demo mode.
I hope the bug in Photoshop CS4 will be fixed in Photoshop CS5.

  • Is the PDF slideshow in PSE 7 like the one in PSE 3 ?

I have PSE 3 and convert photos from vacations and trips to the "Simple PDF Slideshow" in PSE 3. When PSE 4 came out it seemed it no longer supported the PDF Slideshow so I stayed with PSE 3. Recently I noticed that PSE 7 has the PDF slideshow option. Is it the same (or very similar) to the one I enjoy in PSE 3? If so I may finally choose to install PSE 7. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think I can install PSE 7 and still keep PSE 3 until I decide which I like better. Also, I notice that an OEM version is available for $33. Is there anything illegal about purchasing an OEM version? Are there any drawbacks? Of course I will still need to purchase Barbara Brundage's book. Her book on PSE 3 has saved me many hours of trial and error.
    Eva

I didn't get any replies to my post so I'll have to reply to myself :-).
I purchased PSE 8 after deciding that the OEM versions for sale were too good to be true. I don't know about the legality, but further reading about OEM software for sale seems to indicate that it resembles piracy, in a way. So I put down my dollars for PSE 8 in a box. I ordered B. Brundage's book but it hasn't arrived yet. I'm sure many of my questions will be answered when I can read her book.
But about the PDF slideshows in PSE 3 and PSE 8, I can safely say they are NOT the same. Though on the screen both versions appear the same, if you save a particular slide to the clipboard and then to a file, the PSE 3 version is the full original size photo. If you want, you can print it. The PSE 8 version slide is maximum 1600 X 1200. Does it matter? Perhaps not. If I burn the PDF slideshow to a disk I know I can always extract a photo from the PSE 3 version. So I don't have to put the photos separately on the disk as well. Whether that's important to anyone but me is questionable, but it does  answer the question whether the two slideshow programs are the same.
I have some other observations about having both versions of PSE on the computer which will go to a separate topic.

  • PDF Slideshow question.

    Hi! :-)
Does somebody knows if the created pdf slideshows, can showing the images only, without having the surrounding black border?
Can Photoshop Album Starter Edition, create pdf slideshows without black borders? How?
If not, what program can do this trick?
    Maybe acrobat trial? Something else?
    Thanks!!! :-)

    THANKS VkSharma!!! ;-)
    It's a pity!
I installed acrobat trial and I made the no-borders pdf, but album creates much more small sized files, so they're more comfortable for online sharing.
    THANKS AGAIN!!! :-)

  • PDF Slideshows losing functionality when posted online

PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I HAVE NO PROBLEM MAKING SLIDESHOWS WITH TIFF AND EMAILING THE PDF SLIDESHOWS TO CLIENTS. BUT ONCE I POST THE SLIDESHOW ON MY WEBSITE, THE PDF SLIDESHOW STOPS SCROLLING AUTOMATICALLY AND YOU CAN NOW ONLY MANUALLY SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE IN ACROBAT FORMAT. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SETTING I NEED TO SELECT IN EITHER PHOTOSHOP ALBUM STARTER OR ACROBAT TO PREVENT THIS.

I want to resize files for pdf slide show but retain full view, how is it done........(this is my first attempt)
I have used 40 files (average size 74kb) with background music, works perfect on DVD and when using Elements 5. BUT if emailed the music finishes before the last 3 files. Why? Can anybody tell me why and what I am doing wrong.

  • Bridge CS5 pdf slideshow problem

My problem is that when I create a pdf slideshow, it loops even though I do not check the box next to "loop after last page". I have tried multiple times with no success. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Tom

No, the "repeat slideshow" is not checked. Excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't that setting apply to viewing the slideshow in Bridge? My question relates to the saved pdf file, executed outside of Bridge.
The Output option for loop slideshow is for opening in third party viewers. It is also a bit of a mystery for me but in basic the theory should be when saving loop and playback options opening this file in a viewer application that should start with asking to accept the settings for this document (it does so in Acrobat Pro but not in my basic preview app on a Mac.
Ironically Bridge itself does not respond to the loop preset when having its own view slideshow active (but to be honest, this does not surprise me at all, one of the many flaws of Bridge when it comes to consistency )
And settings in the viewer on its turn should override the settings in the file (unless as described above in Acrobat with asking for permission). But as often, this is the theory and with all different applications and systems it is hard to find a general protocol for use.
If you have checked if both the file and the viewer don't have the loop after last page setting saved and you did not save it in a template in the Output module (but then it should be selected I would think) and it keeps repeating to loop then maybe reset the preferences for Bridge.

  • Exporting pdf from cs6 results in much lower resolution file

    Hi,
I try to export various files photos, posters at jpeg and psd formats to pdf but I'm getting much lower resolution files eg from 2480x3508jpeg to 500x800 pdf. The same happens to all cs6 design standard suite. To the preview as well. I'm using mavericks. Does anyone know the solution?

Appropriate image size needs to be set in Photoshop.  Leave all the layers - especially vector layers like Type and Shapes
Then you need to read through the options when saving as PDF.
In the General Tab choose 'High Quality print'.
In the Compression tab make sure the dpi is set to at least 300
That should be fine, so if not, come back and tell us what is happening.

  • PDF Slideshow to JPG

I have created several PDF slideshows in PE9 and they play back nicely on the computer. I would like to convert these slideshows to JPG files, so that they can be burned to DVD's. I tried the batch process in PE9, but it did not work. It only converted page 1. Does anybody know of a software program that will do this? My budget is around $50 max. That of course leaves out photoshop and acrobat. Thanks

What Windows operating system are you running ?
IF you saved the original PSE slide show project,
-- there may be alternatives to burn a standard definiton DVD within the software that you currently have..  If you have a high def TV, then you could consider playing that DVD with an upscaling DVD player.
-- if you have a TV player that can play the WMV format, then you can output from the PSE slide show editor as a WMV file.
However, if you are determined to use the JPEG format,
-- then I think that you may need to start over using the Photoshop Elements editor and adding the text to copies of your photo files.  If you do have the slideshow project saved, then you could potentially try a copy and paste from the slide show editor to the to Text tool of the PSE Editor.
    OR
-- look at the Adobe Reader and see if it has any functions to extract the individual photos from the PDF file. If yes, then the captions might be present in the resulting jpeg images.
