PDF-standard in osx: PDF/  X-4:2008?

To send print online to my printer-service, they require a pdf-standard called pdf/x-4:2008 (the x stands for exchange they say. does not really say anything ...).
I am a typical Mac-user, and don't really like these kind of specs ... To me, exporting should just work.
However, wiser by experience ... it is always good to check this.
My question is: is the export-standard that comes from macosx 10.8 in line with these requirements? ... I would think so, after all, I am working from the best operating system on the planet?  :-)
But ... nowhere can I find any specs concerning the pdf-format from osx

so, that would mean if I want to be sure there is no incompatibility with the printers machines (almost definately still in DOS-mode  :-)  ), I'd better design in Indesign or such. ...
It is odd that Apple does not use a later version. Would there be any difference in actual fact?
Also, where can I find this info?
thanks

  • PDF/X-4:2008 in Adobe CS5.5+??

    Hi everyone,
I'm part of a german medium-sized company and we're about to bring in PDF/X-4 as our new standard in prepress. But our digital-print section is just able to process PDF v. 1.3 / 1.4 (Acrobat 4 / 5) flawlessly. So – my problem is, that in our Adobe Suite (we got some Macs with CS 5.5 and some allready upgraded to CS 6) there's just the PDF/X-4:2010 standard available as the last export function, which means that a PDF v. 1.6 (Acrobat 7) will be created, what implements potential sources of error in our print-section. We use to export directly out of InDesign. Is there a way to add the "old" PDF/X-4:2008 standard in InDesign CS 5.5 / CS 6, by any chance? Then we'd be able to create a PDF v 1.4 instead, but with the advantages of the X4-standard – instead of to writing a PDF/X-1a to gain a lower PDF-version than 1.6.
Thanks for prospective comments, I hope you're able to help me.
    Greetings,
    Ruwen2302

First and foremost - if your "digital print section" is only able to work with files that are 15 years(!!!) old, you REALLY REALLY REALLY need ot get them into this century!
Second, the PDF/X-4:2008 standard - which was completely replaced by PDF/X-4:2010, was also based on PDF 1.6.  So even if you were to create such a file, it would still be using PDF 1.5 and 1.6-based features and your existing solution would fail.
If you are going to use PDF/X-4 - which would be the correct modern solution for PDF processing - then you MUST upgrade your software and/or hardware to be PDF/X-4 compliant.   there is NO shortcut!

  • Error with "Save as Adobe PDF" in Word 2008

I have Word 2008 12.2.5 on Snow Leopard 10.6.4.  I just upgraded all in one go from Acrobat Pro 9.0.0 to 9.3.3. I went to try out the "Save as Adobe PDF" function, and every time I get an error popup that says "An error occurred while saving the PDF file". The popup includes the OS X "Automator" icon of a robot holding a pipe(?).
First there is a dialog box where I set Adobe PDF Settings: Standard and After PDF Creation: Nothing. I click Continue and a file dialog is next where I choose the output filename, where I click Save, then the error box appears.
    Help?
    Thanks.

The Save As PDF feature in Office2008 Call up a PDF  Creator similar to the AdobePDF Print Driver. whch OX.6 can't use.
To create Pdf you have to use method used:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/acrobats-adobe-pdf-printer-replaced-in-snow-leopard.php
Not before you attempt to use this method if  Rossetta is not installed. pop in your Systems DVD and install Rosetta. Then follow directions to install the Adobe Quality PDF Automator Script which will show up in the Print Menu. Click on Print > then click PDF. Then Click on Adobe quality PDF.  AS for setting up Job options and other details Supposedly your suppose to  have access. But I have no idea.
First thing Rosetta should be installed out of the box. and Second Adobe should install this Script from their installer. So their should be no intervention from the user. it should just work. Early report when OSX.6 first came out almost no one was able to get this to work. and I see periodic reports that people still can't get it tork and they have to to resort to saving as .ps files then droping on distiller.
    Good luck.

  • Converting .doc file to PDF using Word 2008 - does not convert as is..

I am trying to convert a .doc file (Word 2008) to a PDF file.  I have tried using the save as function and the print function.  Both will work however everytime 2 things happen:
    1.  The PDF file splits into 2 files (the document is 20 pages long)
    2.  In one area of text, two words are overlapped (in the PDF version) but are not overlapped in the .doc version.
How do I convert the .doc to a PDF with out these two items occuring?
Thanks in advance for your help
    T.

I do not think this is an app but rather a function of MS-Word, the very function that does not work with high fidelity on Mac.  Any document of substance (greater than 10,000 words, imbedded images, figures, tables, or high formatting) will not convert accurately to PDF on Macbook Pro.
Using newest MS Office with updated service pacs, and experienced users. This is a puzzling incompetency on the Apple team's side. And there have been no fixes.  One could argue this is a MS problem since the software is theirs.  Probably true, but the problem occurs on Mac platforms, not PC platforms.  Apple can drive improvements.  Not sure Apple customers can.

  • Create linked server between MS SQL Server 2008 standard edition to MS SQL Server 2008 express edition

For the captioned issue, is it possible?  We have successfully created linked server between 2 MS SQL server 2008 standard edition, but failed for the standard and express edition.  Is there any trick to setup?  Thanks.

    Hello,
SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition may not allow to create a linked server, but the workaround is to use the T-SQL. You can use sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems with RDP/RDC from Mac OSX to Windows Server 2008 on External IP

We have a customer that is using Mac and Microsoft's RDC for Mac to their servers.
They've just upgraded from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 and can't connect through RDP to their TS server on external IP.
Their servers is not in any domain and it work for them to connect to another Windows Server 2008 that is located in their office when they use internal IP.
The problem is that when using RDC to the external IP they get bellow:
"Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to. This problem can occur if:
The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista.
The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.
Contact your network administrator or the owner of the remote computer for assistance."
From here they can choose "Connect" as they did on the Server 2003 but now they get: "Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to.Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer, or contact our administrator."
and is only able to choose "Ok".
I've changed the settings on the "configuration for host server for remote desktop sessions" under General from "RDP-Security Layer" to "Negotiate" and in this case I get a logon windows where i type in all my information click logon. Here I get another
error message which says something like: (We get it in Swedish). "Connection to the windows-based computer broke since there was a problem associated with the licensificationprotocol... Try to connect again" Where I can choose "Cansel" or "reconect"
but it just keeps poping up if i chose reconnect.
I've tried all settings in the TS server and there is not much to change on the RDP client. We have installed the server certificate on the Mac client but it didn't help.
We've also tried with CoRD and it works fine as RDP from a normal Windows based computer.
The only solution I've found on google is to use CoRD instead but we got problems with that connection since it keep crasching on our computer.
In my eyes the problem is on the security requirements that the RDC for Mac needs but I can't find any inforamtion on MS sites about it.
Greatfull for all tips and trix!

I too was having the problem same as everyone else. However, for me the problem all started when I replaced my SSL certificate that was used/selected in the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility, connections, RDP-TCP Properties.  The security
layer is negotiate and the certificate is the one selected on that screen.  It was not licensing related.
The certificate had expired and I didn't believe I needed it.  But turns out I did, so I had to generate and validate a new one using GoDaddy (though they specifically were not part of the problem).  As my Terminal Servers (Remote desktop servers)
do not have IIS installed, I was a bit stumped on how to create a new certificate request.   I finally found some instructions on how to create a certificate request using the MMC snap-in, advanced operations, create custom request. The template
chosen was "legacy key", and without boring the rest of the details that part was the root cause of my problem.  The legacy key was not able to be processed correctly by the Mac RDC client. Neither the official 2.1.1 client or the 2.1.2 download.
The Terminal Server system event log was showing the following two errors, 36874 and 36888.  The first one contained the best details and said: "An TLS 1.0 connection request was received from a remote client application, but none of the cipher suites
supported by the client application are supported by the server. The SSL connection request has failed."  Upon searching the internet for that, I found this page which described the legacy key problem:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/3a2d2eec-000d-432a-abd7-6b965268c671
So, my solution most familiar to me was to use IIS and create the SSL certificate request, process that with my 3rd party CA, export the certificate with private key and then import that certificate into all of my terminal servers.  Then using the session
host configuration tool, pick the new certificate and the problem was now solved.

  • How to join srever osx to windows server 2008

    Hi
Can any one advise me on the best way to join OS X Server to Windows server 2008 DC.
My ultimate aim is to manage ipads using OS X server by pulling users from Active Directory within Server 2008.
    Thanks

You need to join the OS X Server to Active Directory just like any other Mac. This is done usually using Directory Utlity but can also be done via the command line.
Once you have joined it to AD, you then in Server.app switch to showing Network Accounts. These accounts can then be used to authenticate services in Server.app

  • Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001/2003/2008 and International Guidelines

    Hi all,
First of all, forgive me for any incompetence - I'm extremely new to the world of graphic design and print compatibility.
    System information:
    64-bit Windows 7 running Adobe Illustrator CS6 version 16.1.1 (64-bit)
I am currently formatting our business cards in AI. They are being submitted to a print company in the UK. The print company has requested the PDFs to be in the format PDF/X-1a:2008 for the highest quality. However, I only have the option for PDF/X-1a:2001 or 2003. I have Googled this extensively and a hint came when Google said "Search only pages in the UK?"
This leads me to the following questions:
    1. Does this 2008 standard exist, or did my contact at the company simply make a typing error? (It is my understanding that 2001 and 2003 are very similar standards, with the exception that 2003 is more broadly supported and overcomes compatibility issues)
    2. Is this ISO standard only in the UK? Is it possible I can't find information on it because of my current country setting (Canada) and because I have a North American version of the Adobe Suite (if such a thing exists) that does not offer this standard?
    3. If yes, is there any conversion software out there, or an add-on pack I can install, to ensure our PDFs are compliant?
Thank you in advance for all your help with this matter.

There is NO SUCH THING as PDF/X-1a:2008.  The last version of PDF/X-1a was in 2003, however no one uses that - everyone uses the 2001 version.
There is, however, a PDF/X-4 standard that is from 2008 - however it was replaced with a updated in 2010 and no one uses the 2008 version.
So you really need to go back to the printer ask them what they really mean.

  • Cannot export to PDF with grayscale PDF in layout

    IDCS5.5, MacPro, OSX 10.7.4
I am working on a grayscale teacher’s guide that accompanies a CMYK schoolbook. The introduction pages contain miniature pages of the workbook (formatted as grayscale PDF), but InDesign refuses to output those pages as PDF ("Impossible d’exporter le fichier PDF"), or when it does produce a PDF (when exporting page by page), Acrobat warns of a possible problem and stuff is missing on the resulting page, not necessarily from the grayscale minipages.
I have tried grayscale PDFs created from the original CMYK PDFs in Acrobat Pro X, grayscale PDFs exported from the original CMYK file in InDesign CS6, PDFs reduced to 20% in InDesign, PDFs reduced to 20% with a third-party application and imported in ID at 100%, and all sort of variations on the export values. The problem is also present in InDesign CS4 (after exporting the file as IDML) and in CS6.
The thing is, there is no problem at all if I use the CMYK PDF version of the minipages (I then turned the resulting PDF into grayscale with Acrobat Pro X). But the printer expects to see only grayscale images in a grayscale job, not color... and a Photoshop version of those minipages is not acceptable.
Has anybody encountered that problem? Can you reproduce it, i.e. can you export to PDF if you use any type of grayscale PDFs in your layout?

FOUND IT! Inspired by Rob solution, I was able to export my InDesign CS5.5 document containing some grayscale PDFs to PDF/X-3:2002 (and PDF/X-1a:2001), with or without the standard, but without converting to destination. For some reason, it does not work with PDF/X-4:2008, nor with any of the other presets.

  • Empty PDF created by Acrobat XI Pro

    Hi,
The more I am using Acrobat XI Pro for Mac, the more I find out some issues around that.
I am using emacs to write a C++ program.  Emacs support postscript print so I print the buffer to a ps file.
Preview can open the ps file  but the same file become empty when openning with Acrobat XI Pro (distriller).
Is it to do with the fonts but those fonts are used by Apple Font manager as well. I think I am using Monaco size 12.
Next question would be how can I make the Apple font used by Acrobat XI Pro
I tried to check the settings in Acrobat Distriller but except things like standard, high quality, etc I do not find anything to note for postscript file conversion.
    Anybody come across this issue?
    Thanks,
    SS

it says something like "compliance out of range".
    Acrobat Distiller 11.0

I google it a bit and it probably says Acrobat Distriller does not support the "PDFX4 2008.joboptions". I have no idea why emacs create a .ps file which Distriller does not support it.
    What do I do next?

  • When exported to pdf, I lost random text and pictures

    Hi,
This is the first time I've used InDesign, and I have experienced a pretty big problem the night before I'm to send it to print.
I'm using CS5 and when I went to export it, I chose some simple options I read
    Standard - PDF/X-4:2008
    Compatibility - Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)
I made a couple more adjustments and when it went to a pdf, there are 4 pages missing a couple pictures and a few pages of font.
I couldn't figure it out, so I decided to just pull my fonts and pictures and try again but it won't let me.
It shows all the font layers and the pictures, but you can't see anything or select them. The confusing thing is that in one circumstance, half the article is gone. I tried to delete the font layers, and pull it down again from the previous page, but it won't work either, it gives me an error of over set text.
Does anyone know what in the world happened? It was ready for print one minute after months of work, then, kablooey!!
when it was finished exporting it gave me an error that stated something about 1 error with background
    Can anyone help me?

Sounds like you are having trouble withthe background export (new to CS5, and a little buggy inthe initial release). Have you updated to 7.0.4? If not, do that and try again, then post back with the result.
