PDF stays in print queue forever until I delete it. Why?

For the past few months, when I print a document to PDF, it stays in the Windows print spooler forever until I delete it.
In other words, long after the pdf has been created, I'll see the Printer icon in the system tray, click on it, and see that the document is still sitting in the queue, so I have to cancel it.
It never used to do that until recently, and it doesn't do it on my other computers. Works ok otherwise, but I can't understand why Acrobat or Windows isn't clearing the queue after the pdf is created.
I have Acrobat 8 with Windows XP.

Try deleting the incomplete downloads in your iTunes Downloads folder.
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads
Note: The tilde (~) refers to your Home directory.
Just click Finder > Go > Home >, then you'll see Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads.

  • Printing to Adobe PDF - non-existant print queue or hanging up error

When printing to a pdf, the process is getting stuck in the printing/saving part of the process. As the attached image will show, the pop-up window shows the file name in the Document Name list, but it defaults to the file entitled "06-2013 Newsletter" (my apologies for all the black scribbles; they're there for privacy's sake). I am unable to select the name of the file I'm printing (in this case, "Combined"); it would appear that the pdf is trying to save into a file that already exists. I thought that perhaps the print queue needed to be cleared, but under Devices and Printers, "See what's printing" for the Adobe PDF printer shows nothing in the queue. The task then comes to a standstill and I am unable to continue.
After researching the issue, the only advice I can find is to do a "hard delete" of everything printing or spooling on my server to hopefully "force out" the stuck jobs, but this is not really an option during a busy workday when multiple jobs are printing at any given time. Is there a more simple solution that I am missing?

Well, after restarting my machine the print queue was cleared of all the dead jobs, but when attempting to print to PDF it hung up again, and then did the same as before - all subsequent jobs tried to save as the filename of the first job in the queue. Very annoying!

  • Jobs location in printer queue

I have a job on hold in the printer queue that will not delete. I can't find any folders that the jobs live in, is there one?

    baltwo,
    Thanks for the reply,
I think what happened was I deleted the PDF for a print job that was on hold and I was then not able to delete the job from the queue afterwards. That's my guess. I found somewhat of a superficial fix in another post , not sure if it actually deleted the job, but it's gone from the print queue.
I think I'll wait on the terminal action.

  • Acrobat 7 Professional - PDF Writer errors out in Print Queue

    Hello,
I'm an IT Technician.  We've just imaged many of our machines and several of our secretaries use Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional so I re-deployed that application, along with the 7.1.3 update.  Everything works fine for me, including some of our test accounts.  For this secretary, though, every time she goes to print something to 'Adobe PDF' the progress bar flashes quickly, it errors out in the print queue, and no document is created.  If I log in, or use another account with similar rights to her's, it works just fine.  I have removed Adobe Reader from it, done all the update, even gave her full control over that printer but still no luck.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

When you print to the Adobe PDF printer, it normally creates a PS file in a specific location and AcroTray then notes the PS file and proceeds to finish the job of calling Distiller. Doing the Print-to-file was just to check that the basic functions work. If they do not, then which one fails - the print to file or Distiller. These steps should help isolate the problem and give you some direction to go. Sometimes it is just easier to reinstall or repair the current setup. If the person is not logged in as an administrator, is it possible that the installation restricted the application to only administrators?

  • PDF Virtual Printer Queue has doc print errors but PDF's created

This has probably been answered already somewhere here, but I can't seem to find a current solution.
I am using Windows 7 64bit Pro and Acrobat X Pro. When printing to a PDF from any source - word, excel, email, the PDF is created correctly, but my PDF Printer Queue shows a document print error and leaves the doc in the queue.
This wasn't happening before so I am not sure if it's a known issue that an update has fixed or something else. If there is another thread that has the answer, let me know. Or a link to the fix would be great! Thanks.

    Hi,  try instead:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/set-default-printer-print-center.html
It works for current OS versions. If other dialogs appear, continue to add the printer.
The printer will be called localhost.  Select it to print from eTax and choose the option to " Print to pdf"
Directions previous were to go to the manufacturers site, not the Apple site for the install, but its ok, link above is a better alternative.
    Apologies….
    Cheers

  • PDF Print Queue

I have CS3, and since I don't know which program is responsible for this issue, I'm posting here.
About two months ago a new phenomenon popped up. I noticed that when I print to PDF, or use the Adobe PDF tabs in MS Office programs to convert to PDF, an entry remains in the print queue window even after the PDF output file was successfully generated, saved, and displayed in Acrobat. The status column in the queue window shows some of the items as "Error - Printing" while other show nothing under status.
I can delete them from the queue manually.
Up to two months or so ago, this was not happening. It just started. I've been using CS3 for quite a while, so I suspect it began with some update.
I recently upgraded from MS Office 2003 to 2007, but this problem began before that upgrade.
Printing to other (physical) printers does not cause the same problem. Successful print jobs disappear from the queue for those printers.
FYI, I am using Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, and for browsing, Firefox.
Any ideas? I haven't found any setup checkbox that seems to fix this.

    Bob,
Adobe Updater says there are no updates available for any of my CS3 programs - I just checked again after seeing your post. It's set up to check weekly.
    FYI, my Acrobat is 8.1.3.

  • Print to PDF Causes print Queue to stop

My user has been having a lot of difficulties with Acrobat 11 (For Windows 7). When she tries to use the Adobe PDF printer and print to PDF, occasionally it will lock up the print queue and will not complete. It also will not release the prints. I have to run a repair on Adobe as restarting the spool service or going into the spool folder and trying to delete the items does not work.
I have run the repair several times and most recently totally uninstalled and re installed Acrobat, made sure all updates were applied but each time it temporarily fixes the issue for a few days and ends up coming back. Any ideas of what I can do next?

Yes, this is caused by the HP 2.10 update.
    Among other threads: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4197112?tstart=0
    Remove /Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpPostScriptPDE.plugin.
    Hope this helps.

  • Acrobat Pro 8 Print queue error, but pdf is created fine...

I'm running xp pro, and acrobat pro 8, every time I try to print a pdf, I get an error with the print queue although it still makes a pdf every time! I've tried the repair tool in acrobat and also uninstall/reinstall but I get the same deal every time.
Its more an annoyance than anything as I still get the pdf files but I'm thinking something must be wrong to throw up an error every single time!
Any help would be good :)

Alternatively, look at using digital signatures and the security
policies. This method ensures that only the person with the matching
certificate can open the file and have specific options ...
It would involve swapping digital ID files but once set-up, it's very
powerful ... just uses Acrobat 8 and even Reader ..

    Hi,
That's very normal. Depending on many things, machine (laptop/PC) has to send many "commands" down to the printer therefore the file is getting huge.

  • Printer Queue Stays Open In Dock

I want the Printer Queue icon to automatically remove itself from the Dock after files have been successfully printed. Didn't it used to do that? Now, it stays open and takes up room and I have to quit it manually to make it go away. Is there any way to change this behavior?
    Thanks

    YES! THANK YOU!

I also have to hide completed jobs or it will not quit automatically.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • How to recreate the Create Adobe PDF printer queue (Mac)?

I have tried deleteing the files in /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins (nothing was there) and /Library/Printers/PPDs but when I go to repair the Acrobat install from the Help menu, I only get the option to recreate the Safari plug-in. There doesn't seem to be any option under Distiller. So how can I recreate that print queue, short of reinstalling from scratch?

That's one way. Another is to use the Save as Adobe PDF from the PDF box at the lower left of the Print window.

  • Documents stuck in printer queue - Airport Extreme + Windows 7

    Hi There,
I have a HP CP1215 Laserjet hooked up to my Airport Extreme and print to it from a Windows 7 (x64) machine.
Everything works fine in the sense that I can print documents and the quality is great, the problem is that the document remains in the 'printing' status in the windows queue forever more and the printer continues to print copy after copy of the document until I manually delete the job from the queue myself.
I also have a mac that uses the same printer (setup with the foo2hp drivers) which works fine so I'm thinking it must be a network/windows issue.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    Oliver

Please read this postthen provide some details.  What printer model? How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth?
Running the diagnostics at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue.

  • Printer Queue Clogged

I am printing to an HP LaserJet 1022. I've been running this printer for about a year with no problems at all. For some reason now when I print, it will stay in the queue until I go in and delete the last job that printed. Once it's printed the file, it doesn't move it out of the queue. I've deleted the printer and reinstalled it several times, unplugged it, turned it off, restarted, etc. I've gone into ~/Lbrary/Printers and deleted the queue there and that doesn't work either. Is there some other file that I need to delete to start from zero?

First thing when printer issues arise - Check to see if there is a driver update available. The OS has undergone a number of changes in the last year, perhaps the driver has, too ... and don't forget to Repair Disk Permissions after.
If that isn't the issue, see if there is a preferences file or folder for the printer in your User|Library|Preferences folder. That's most likely the cause of the queue problem and when you deleted the queue it just got recreated by the driver using the corrupt prefs, perhaps.

  • Bizarre solution for OfficeJet Pro K5300 problem when Word docs hang in the print queue spooling

A bizarre solution to a spooling problem.
    Problem:
Word documents sent to an HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series printer hang in the print queue, saying “spooling”. They do not print, and cannot even be cancelled.
    Solution (Bizarre Solution).
The solution that worked for me was to rename the printer by removing the first space after “HP” in the printer’s name. When I did this, Word could then print to the printer. If the space is then re-inserted back into the printer-name then Word is still able to print!! I don’t know how, but it worked, and it worked on two separate installations! The full explanation is below with more options for testing that still need to be explored, or preferably explained by HP and or Microsoft.
First here is some background. My computer is an IBM NetVista 2.4GHz, P4. It has a 250GB HDD with lots of room and 2GB of RAM. My operating system is Win XP Pro with Service Pack 3. My anti-Virus in Trend Micro Internet Security 2009, updated regularly, (I turned it off while installing the printer software). I use Office Professional 97, with Office SP2b).
I bought a new HP Officejet Pro K5300 printer.
I installed the printer software, and followed HP’s directions strictly. I used the installation CD that was supplied by HP. My connection to the printer was USB.
The installation proceeded uneventfully and I printed a test page after it finished.
After that I printed a configuration page, then I printed a couple of photographs using Irfan View. The quality was great and I was pleased.
Then I tried to print a 2-page Word document, using Word 97, but nothing happened. No response from the printer, no error messages, just silence. I clicked on the printer icon on the task bar to look at the print queue and saw that my document was listed as “Spooling”, but it was not making any progress. I waited a couple of minutes but still no progress. I tried canceling it but it would not cancel/delete. The job on the queue would not respond to anything. I could not print it and I could not cancel it. The only way I could recover was to shut down Word, which flushed the queue and lost the job.
I tried this a few more times but with no success.
I did a Google search for this problem, and I found a few solutions. I tried them, but none worked. I checked HP’s website and found this problem listed, with some solutions from HP. I tried HP’s solutions, but they did not work either. In fact, when there was a Word document stuck “spooling” in the queue, HP’s diagnostic utility said that it could not even communicate with the printer, and suggested that my USB connection was bad. However, when I flushed the queue by shutting down Word, I could successfully send a Test Page to the printer, and I could print a detailed PDF from Adobe. So Word was the problem, not my USB connection.
After a pondering this problem over the next few days, and keeping in mind the fact that the default HP printer-name was “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series”, I remembered that many years ago I could not get an Excel VB macro to select a printer, and print to it, if the printer-name had any spaces in it. I had noticed that the HP default printer name had 4 spaces in it, so I wondered what would happen if I renamed the printer by removing the spaces from its name.
So I renamed the printer to “HPOfficejetProK5300Series” (no spaces), and voila! Word could now print to it!
Then I wondered, if it was necessary to remove all of the spaces from the name, or just some of them, to get the printer to work, so I renamed the printer back to it’s default name in 4 stages, at each stage re-inserting one of the original spaces, and testing the printing. At each stage the printer kept successfully printing from Word, until I had re-inserted all four spaces and the printer’s name was back to being identical to the default name that it was installed with, but now it would print from Word on command.
So why was it that Word could not get the printer to print with the printer’s default installed name, but if I removed all of the spaces from the printer’s name, then re-inserted them, the printer would print from Word every time?
    So I did another test.
I uninstalled the entire printer software package and installed the updated Full Feature software package, filename “OJProK5X00_Full_8_3.exe”, 159MB download from HP.
After the package was installed, Word could NOT print to the printer, but other programs like Adobe PDF reader, and Irfan View, could print to it. I tried each software package about three times each, with consistent results.
I then renamed the printer, but this time I just removed the first space after the letters “HP”, i.e., I changed the printer’s name from “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” to “HPOfficejet Pro K5300 Series”. After I did that Word could then print to it. I then changed the printer’s name back to “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” by re-inserting the first space, and Word could still print to it now.
I challenge someone from HP to read this and explain why Word won’t print to this printer until I rename the printer by removing a space, but can still print to it after the space is re-inserted!
Of course, there is another alternative. Perhaps I could have renamed the printer by removing or changing any of the other characters, instead of the spaces. But each test involves completely uninstalling and re-installing the software, and I have better things to do with my time.
    This question was solved.

    What an amazing solution!
I recently purchased an HP Deskjet F4580 and had discovered that when using Word 97, it would print OK when using the Print icon but when trying to print using File->Print->choose page number or current page, Word would crash. Excel, Adobe etc would all print fine. I have spend many hours removing and then reloading the HP software and Office Professional software but this solution fixed the problem in a few minutes. PC is running XP Home SP3.
Just one thing I would add is that my computer has two accounts - one is the Computer Administrator account and the other is a Limited account. When I took out the space between HP and Deskjet so the printer became HPDeskjet F4500 series, I could then print from the Administrator account using either  the print icon or File->Print->choose page number or current page. When I switched to the Limited account, I would get the same crash when I tried File->Print->choose page number or current page (OK with icon). The Limited account mode does not allow the printer to be re-named.
I went back to Admin mode, re-classified the Limited account as a Computer Administrator account, logged on to this account and re-named the printer (in this case I took out another space so it became HPDeskjetF4500 series. Then it printed fine using the print icon or using File->Print->choose page number or current page. I then went back to the Computer Administrator account, re-named the printer to HPDeskjet F4500 and re-classified the second account back to Limited account mode. Now printing OK in both Computer Administrator account mode and Limited account mode.
    Thanks again!
