Pdf thumbnails in Windows 7 64bit?

How do I get my thumbnails to show up using Adobe Reader X and 64 bit Windows 7?
Thanks

Not a reasonable answer to the issue. Sounds like something I'd get from Dell in the old days. The fact is thumbnails work for everything else EXCEPT PDF's. It is a reader issue regardless of what code is causing the problem.
A system restore? I could also reformat and re-install. Neither is the answer. I am interested in figuring out what is preventing thumbnails from displaying.
This problem exists on both x86 and x64 installs and is not unique to my systems.
Thanks anyway.

  • PDF Thumbnails in Windows explorer...

I have noticed that when you choose thumbnail view in XP or Vista, it only shows a adbove icon instead of an actual pdf thumbnail of th actual document. When reviewing hundreds of PDF's in windows explorer, this is a necessity. Why was this a standard installed option on Adobe 7 and then lost in version 8 and 9. This has to be a program glitch. This is becoming more and more of an important issue in my office as time goes on.
Please note that I AM NOT referring to seeing thumbnail views from within acrobat. This is a simple option that I know how to enable. I need to see them from a ile explorer window.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

I've had Acrobat 8 on XP for quite some time and all my thumbnails in Explorer were showing the first page, but then a couple of weeks ago I uninstalled some older versions of Acrobat in a bit of a clean up and suddenly I was just left with the icons. Disaster - I too have hundreds of pdf files and seeing the colour of the front page before I open a file saves me so much time.
Loading Reader didn't work for me (sorry Mike) but I found some advice in another thread to try running Repair Acrobat Installation under the help menu, then restarting. Success!!! All my thumbnails are back as I need them.

  • No PDF Thumbnails in Windows 7 RTM Reader 9.1.3

My Thumbnails have disappeared. PDF documents that previously had thumbnails are gone. Just the plain old Adobe icon now. I have tried every setting I can think of and deleted all the thumb files and icon caches. One minute I had 'em and the next they were gone after reboot. I have reinstalled Reader 3 times.
I am sure something got overwritten, but I sure can't find it. Basically the machine has Office 2007 and Quicken and some lesser apps. installed so far. All the Windows settings are still set to show Thumbnails. All JPGs still show thumbs. The same PDF files show perfect thumbs on my Vista machine..... I have no idea what I did or what 7 is doing. I have also tried changing color depth and resolution and rebooting.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!!

  • Reader 9/X - No PDF thumbnails with Windows 7 32 bit

Please can anyone help? This is driving me crazy.
We have 3 PCs in our house - 2 on Windows 7 32 bit (notebooks) and a desktop running Windows 7 64 bit.
I had the no thumbnail preview problem on the 64 bit system solved with the 3rd party patch download. It works great now. I then noticed that we have the same problem on one of the notebooks running 32 bit. It has got me stumped.
I first noticed this when running Reader X, so down graded back to Reader 9. I noted that with Reader X I could not get a preview of the PDF contents in the preview pane (when activated), nevermind not get a thumbnail preview (miniature depiction of the of the files contents rather than PDF icon). When I downgraded to Reader 9, I can get the preview pane to work, but still no thumbnail preview, although preview thumbnails for other file types e.g. JPEGs are working fine. Thumnails are turned on.
Anyone got any ideas on this, or is it just one of those things to have to put up with?
    With thanks
    Bryan

  • Vista x64 SP1 PDF Thumbnail Previews Missing

I recently loaded Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on my PC. After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.1, I don't see the thumbnail previews for PDFs in Windows Explorer - only the Adobe icons. How can I get the thumbnail previews?

Since you people are no help, I will log my own attempts to resolve this issue, in case I need to do it again in the future.
I use Foxit Reader for PDF viewing, because it's much better. I installed Adobe Reader 8.1.1 to get my PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer back. I also have Photoshop CS4 installed. Here are my steps so far:
    1. Ensure that my folders are in "Large Icons" view, make sure "Always show icons..." option is disabled.
    2. Uninstall Foxit Reader & Adobe Reader.
    3. Remove Adobe Reader & PDF file type entries from registry.
    4. Ran Unassoc to remove the PDF file type from Windows.
    5. Ran Disk Cleanup to remove Thumbnail files.
    6. Installed Adobe Reader 8.1.2.
    * At this point, I effectively had a clean install of Adobe Reader. However, my PDF file thumbnails still show up as the stupid Adobe icon.
    7. Ran xplorer2 32-bit in Thumbnail view. My PDF thumbnails show up both in the file explorer view and in the preview pane (Draft and Native).
    8. Ran Adobe Bridge CS4. PDF thumbnails show up there, too. So, at least I now have 2 effective workarounds to Adobe Reader's ridiculous shortcoming.
    9. Ran the 32-bit Windows Explorer. No problem with PDF thumbnails. Hot damn!
    10. Closed 32-bit Windows Explorer. Opened regular Windows Explorer and browsed to the same directory. PDF thumbnails still working.
    11. Browsed to another folder with Windows Explorer. No PDF thumbnails.
    12. Reinstalled Foxit Reader 3.0 so I don't have to suffer through actually using Adobe Reader. Made sure not to set it as the default PDF reader.
    13. Verified thumbnails in 32-bit Explorer still work. They do. *******.
There you have it. 3 separate workarounds. Maybe Adobe will fix this problem in their next release. Maybe they'll also create a PDF reader that isn't 100mb. Don't hold your breath. Thank me and follow my instructions instead.

  • .pdf Thumbnails disappear when installing Acrobat Pro 9

Since i have installed Acrobat Pro 9 the .pdf Thumbnails in Windows Explorer won't show up when i choose the the normal Adobe Reader 9 for standard opening .pdf Files (which i do because its faster). I'm using Win7 32bit are there any suggestions ? this is really a bad bug in my mind.

You can try this. Not sure if this will definitly help but I hope this should:
    Delete the following preferences folders:
          a) ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
          b) ~/Library/Caches/Acrobat/
          c) ~/Library/Caches/Acrobat/
          d) ~/Library/Preferences/Acrobat Distiller Prefs
          e) ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/
Here ~ represents your home directory. Empty your trash, Restart the machine and then start the Acrobat.

  • Windows 7 x64 and PDF thumbnails problems

I have CS5 and Acrobat 9 and under Vista x32 I could see the pdf thumbnails nicely.  Yesterday I installed Windows 7 x64 and now all I can see are the Adobe icons.  I read some other threads that describe opening up the files through acrobat and then changing to either large icon or extra large icon to fix the problem.  This works, but when I go back through windows explorer everyhting is back to just icons.  I have made sure that explorer is set to always view thumbnails and I don't have this problem with anyother file types such as Word documents or image files.  I have also tried rebuilding the installation as anthoer poster had suggested.  Has anyone found a permanent fix for this?

Thanks for the link to the fix (by Pretentious Name . com).
I note that over a year has passed since you posted this solution, and Adobe has still not corrected the problem.
Problems, errors, and omissions in software are normal and acceptable - what is not acceptable is that Adobe choses to not take action to correct certain problems, especially when the user community identifies both the cause and the solution to the problem.
The folks at Adobe shoud take a close look at this web page: http://www.pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/ - it contains a complete and well-documented description of both the cause of the problem and the solution to the problem.

  • No pdf thumbnail preview in Windows XP Explorer

I have searched and tried many different fixes to this issue and have had no luck in finding a solution.
I have over 700 PC's that due to a huge security flaw is forcing me to upgrade from our current version of Adobe Reader 8.1.0 to the 'fixed' version of 9.1.3.
Due to the huge number of PC's I have this all being done with automated scripts.  The issue is not with the deployment, but the funcationality of PDF thumbnails.
Once upgraded, the PCs can no longer see a thumbnail view of the PDF's.
Let me start with the method of upgrade.
    - I began with creating and admin install of Reader 9.1
    - I then applied patch 9.1.2 to that admin install.
    - After that I then applied the 9.1.3 patch as well.
    - Using the -r option I created an answer file (setup.iss) file for the install.
    - I then pushed the installation silently to all the machines.
I thought that this was simply due to the fact that they were upgraded, meaning that the 9.1.3 install had to first remove 8.1.0 and it may not have been done cleanly.  However, I ran the same install on a PC that had NO Adobe products on it whatsoever and yet it still has the same issue even though it is a 'clean' install.
    Things I have  tried.
    - I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the package.
    - I have tried re-creating the Admin Image and re-installing it.
    - I have tried associating PDFs with notepad, then back to Adobe Reader.
    - I have re-registered the pdfshell.dll file.
    - I have run the Repair Installation utility.
My guess is that there has to be a simple registry entry or .dlll file that is causing this.

I have the same issue, currently running acro 9.3 and reader 9.3  under vista pro - I tried de/reinstalling reader but it did not help any. Its a pity there is no support or even any correspondence by acrobat - this forum has more than ten threads dealing with this.
    Kind regards,
    Aurel

  • I need PDF thumbnails in Vista 64

I'm running Acrobat Pro 9.1 in Vista 64.  I have approximately 50,000 PDF files in various folders.  And I rely completely on the thumbnail to help me quickly sort through droves of files.  I simply cannot function without the ability to view thumbnails within Windows Explorer.  Will someone please share the solution with me?

You would need a third-party codec such as Ardfrey's.

    or FPV

  • New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before?

New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before? You could drag and drop sections within your document the same way you could drag and drop pages in Preview's PDF documents. So how do you re-arrnage your document now?
    ALSO
You used to be able to duplicate/copy a section/page by draging it with OPTION-LEFT-CLICK to a space below or above in the thumbnial window. The same way it works in PREVIEW in a PDF document. Did I miss something or is this also a bug?!
These were extremely helpful to me and I hope many others. Can anyone help!?
    Thanks :-)

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS5 does not show PDF thumbnails when browsing

When I am browsing through PDF files to open one of them in Adobe Illustrator CS5 it does not show the thumbnail.  When I am browsing in Adobe Acrobat it does show the thumbnails.  If I have Adobe Acrobat open and am browsing through files and the thumbnails are showing then if I open Adobe Illustrator and browse for a file the thumbnail does show up.
How can I get Illustrator to always show the PDF thumbnails.  I have to frequently browse through thousands of PDF files and it is imperative that I can see the thumbnail for these PDF files.  I primarily use Illustrator to edit PDF files.
The computer is Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition.  Thumbnails barely work when browsing files through Explorer.  Some thumbnails will show, but not very many of them and it is extremely slow to load the thumbnails that will display.

    Bob,
So I am assuming you are talking about viewing the files using this method first:
To use the 32-bit version of Windows Explorer, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type the following in the Open box, and then click OK:
    Drive_Letter:\windows\syswow64\explorer.exe /separate
Note The placeholder Drive_Letter represents the drive where the x64-based version of Windows is installed.
Please let me know if I am missing what you are saying here.

  • Missing Thumbnails in Windows XP x64

How can I get thumbnails preview of PDF files in Windows Explorer?
    Operating system Windows XP x64
ps. I have firstly installed adobe reader 8.1.2, but then unistalled it and then tried versions also 7.0.9, 8.0, 8.1.1 without having thumbnail preview...

Odds are you're using a 32-bit version of Windows XP since the 64-bit version isn't officially supported by Boot Camp.
Windows XP can only see 3GB of RAM, which is why your additional 1GB "vanishes."
It has nothing to do with how the hard drive is formatted.

  • Pdf thumbnail number / label - want absolute, getting relative

    Hi!
I'm working on the beginning of a book and am having a problem with how the the pdf thumbnails are labeled
    • It has a cover and an introduction with no page numbers.
    • That's followed by a chapter marked as a section starting with page 1 and the prefix "Challeng."
    • It's set not to display the prefix on the page.
    • The doc itself looks great in both InDesign and when exported to pdf.
The problem is that the pdf is showing thumbnails entitles "Challeng1, Challenge2, etc. in the chapter, as you can see in the image. It should go from 5 to 6 in the thumbnail, while retaining the number 1 for section numbering.
    • I have selected absolute numbering in InDesign for the doc overall.
    • In the pages window in InDesign, I do have the correct absolute numbering.
    • Same result in Mac Preview as in Adobe Reader.
After researching the help, I've been unable to find what I am doing incorrectly and would love some help.
I'm working in CS4 on Mac OS 10.6.7,
Thanks in advance. I'm eager to get out this sample chapter ASAP and this pdf thumbnail issue is my last hurdle, I believe.
    Best,

You will need Acrobat to change the label of a page, including the thumbnail label. To change in Acrobat, Advanced > Document Processing > Number Pages.
If you have sections in your document, the Page Numbering View Preference affects the label in the page panel, and the page reference for printing, but does not change how the label is recognized in Acrobat.
