PDF-to-PDF link works online, fails on CD

We publish multi-part PDF docs on the web and on CD. Inside them are occasional placeholder pages for large maps, with the text CLICK HERE TO VIEW linked to an external file, also a PDF. We make the links with AA's Link tool. (Draw a rectangle around the text, Open File, browse to the map file, etc., you know the drill.) We’ve done this for years, but recently:
- Clicking the link from the local file finds the map just fine.
- Posting the doc and map to the web, opening the doc online (IE), and clicking the link in it for the map works fine.
- Burning the webpage, doc, and map to a CD in the exact same configuration puts up a Security Warning box when we click the map’s link inside the document. The box says the doc is trying to connect to [map's path (correct path)] and offers responses of Help, Allow, or Block. Clicking the obvious ‘Allow’ has no effect!
The CD setup has worked fine for years but now suddenly fails. Is there some parameter in IE that's wound too tight?
I've posted a sample of how it works. To see it, open the first doc linked on http://www.speakeasy.org/~mtangard/test/example.htm and click the red CLICK HERE.. link on page 5 or page 7.
Using Acrobat 9 Pro and IE 8.0.6. Grateful for any clues....

Dump the web page.
For deployment of PDF collections on optical storage media (OSM) avoid "entry" to the collection(s) from an HTML file on the OSM.
Rather, always provide a "start" PDF that is on the root of the OSM.
This avoids having to rely on the end-user's browser or browser version or one software house's updates gobbering another house's application.
Provided the PDFs are not PDF Packages, Acrobat 9 Portfolios, or Acrobat X Portfolios end-users with Adobe Reader / Acrobat back to version 5.x can use the PDFs in a reliable manner.
n.b., if a Cataloged Index or tiered indices are utilized users of version 5.x are 'locked out' as the licensed search engine/index builder was changed in version 6.x
Create a staging "burn zone" on a local machine's HDD.
Identified the common "parent" directory/folder that exists on the web deployment.
At the provided web space example this would be directory/folder "fier".
--| feir
.... file: exec_summ.pdf
.... --| figs
....  .... file: fig_es-1.pdf

When a link path traverses through directories/folders on its passage to a target file this very specific "path" must be maintained when a file collection is transfered.
True for a transfer of files to other web space, network space, other local machines, USB device, or OSM (any format - PDF, HTML, whatever).
~
~
So, with the parent "feir" and its child content present in the 'burn zone' what goes to OSM will contain functional links.
A Windows autorun file on the OSM root affords the possibility of calling Adobe Reader from the local machine to render the "start" PDF.
If, for the PDFs in the 'burn zone, a Catalog Index has been created then associate the PDX file to the 'start' PDF.
With it all on an OSM, the user has a mounted PDX as soon as the 'start' PDF is opened. This supports "anytime" use of Advanced Search.
n.b., newer releases of Acrobat / Adobe Reader can be expected to provide a security dialog when the PDX is accessed.
Be well...

  • Define the start options for a 3D-PDF over a link

How can I set parameters into the html-sourcecode to open a 3D-PDF (or there are other solutions)?
For example you can set a parameter like "*.pdf#view=FitView".
    I want the following things:
    - by opening the PDF the "Modellhierarchie" and the "Toolbar" should be shown
    - the 3D-modell and the Adobe-Reader should fit the window

I found a possible kluge from this discussion here
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1008480
Create the hyperlinks in Word, save the file
Open that file with Pages, export as PDF.
The links work from that PDF.
Note, I did not try this with TOC but it worked with hyperlinks embedded in the Word document

  • A PDF document with links to other PDFs corrupts the URL and get 404. Works in IE.

One of our supplier sites has manuals online that are PDF docs with links from one to another. For example, when I click on "Tanaka" I get a PDF menu of Tanaka service manuals, etc. When I click on a section, such as "Chainsaw" I get a 404. Part of the directory structure in the URL is missing. For example when in the Tanaka PDF menu I click on Chainsaw I go to http://www.parklands.net/Resources/Tana%20CSaw%20Menu.pdf which is wrong. It should be http://www.parklands.net/Resources/Tanaka/Tana%20CSaw%20Menu.pdf, and in IE it is.
== URL of affected sites ==
    http://

The linked documents will not be automatically converted to PDFs and merged
with your file, neither in Acrobat Standard nor in Acrobat Pro. You can do
it, but you'll need to do it manually by converting all the files to PDFs,
merging them and then adding the links between them.

  • PDF links work on only half the computers that open them??

Ok, I created a PDF Flyer that has two links.  I created the file in InDesign, exported to PDF (and yes I clicked the "Export hyperlinks" checked box), and when I opened it on my computer, it worked like it should.  I emailed it to the person who asked to me create it and when she clicked on the links, nothing happened.  She tried it like 6 times and finally the link worked and the wepage opened.  But then she tried it again and the link didn't work and went back to do nothing.  We emailed it to another person in our office and the link, like on my computer worked every time we clicked it.  Then we emailed it to another person and the links didn't work at all.....not even once.  We emailed it to a couple of more people and the results were the same.
My question is: How come the links are working on some computers and not on others.  I am using Acrobat 8.0, everyone else is using 7.0...at first I thought that mattered until I realized that half the people that can open it were using 7.0...I thought it had something to do with our internet settings, but for some reason, this PDF is the exception, I have emailed linked PDFs to this person before and she's never had a problem (and she definately hasn't changed a setting in IE)...
So I am just a little confused.  I have created countless linked PDFs and this is the first time I have seen this.
    Thanks a lot.

I don't think that going from AA8 to AA7 should be a problem for the links, but just in case use either Reduce File Size or PDF Optimize to save the file to AA7 compatibility.

  • PDF links work in Acrobat - don't work in Reader

Acrobat version: 9.5.1 (latest as of this writing)
Reader version: 10.1.3 (latest as of this writing)
I createa  Word doc that has links to UNC shares that look like this:
    "\\server\share\file.exe"
I convert the file to a PDF through Acrobat File -> New.
When I open the PDF file in Acrobat, the link works, and the file is launched.
When I open the file in Reader, the link doesn't work, and this error message is presented:
    Could not open file '/server/share/file.exe'
I'm guessing Reader is interpolating the link to be a relative path - I want to instruct it that this is an absolute link.
If it helps, the machine is running WinXP SP3 32bit.

Sandboxing has been implemented with Reader X which disables launch of any executables from within a PDF.
Thats why you are receiving this message which is expected.

  • PDF Portfolio - Web links do not work

    Hello,
I created a PDF with web links from a Word document. The links worked correctly in the PDF. I then imported the PDF into a portfolio (Acrobat X Professional, using the Grid layout). When I opened the PDF in preview mode the links no longer worked.
I need a way to either make the links work in preview mode in the portfolio, or to have it so that when you double click on the file it opens up outside of the portfolio.  Any help with achieving this would be greatly appreciated?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Would you try this experiment so that we can diagnose the problem?
On your Windows or Mac desktop computer, would you open the PDF document in Reader and check the General Preferences?
Preferences > General > Basic Tools > Create links from URLs.  Is the "Create links from URLs" check box selected?  (It is selected by default.)
Would you deselect it, close the PDF document, and reopen the PDF document?  Do the links still work in the desktop version of Reader?

  • How can I hyperlink from FM to an external document and make the links work in PDF-XChange Viewer?

A couple of months ago some of you kindly taught me how to insert links to an external document in FrameMaker. The syntax that made all the difference, was the following:
    message openfile "H:/folder name/to/your/file.ext"
I converted my FrameMaker file to PDF format using Acrobat Distiller, and everything worked like a charm when the users opened the resulting PDF document in Acrobat Reader.
Much to my frustration, someone has now decided that the organisation should use PDF-XChange Viewer instead of Acrobat Reader, and my links don't work anymore... Nothing happens when you click on them. (This only applies to links to external documents. Links to e.g. websites work nicely.)
Has anybody got any idea what I could do to make the links work in PDF-Xchange Viewer as well? Or am I trying to do the impossible now?
    Best regards

  • PDF and FLV links not working

I have a course that’s made up of a series of hyperlinked swfs and html files. There are also some flvs and pdfs in this. We had to design it in this format (vs. pdf or exe) because of our customer’s special requirements. To try to make a long story short, our company now wants to put this course on a CD-ROM to show customers, however, they do not want to have to make the customer do that extra little step of setting the Flash security settings to accept the external site. Anyway, that is the background, and here is my problem.
I have created two new “marketing” versions that contain a snippet of the course – a PDF version and an EXE version. Here are the problems with each:
    1.       The exe format works great, except there is a button that links to a PDF, and that link, even though the PDF is present in the same directory, does not launch the pdf.
    2.       The PDF version has two problems. I have a FLV that does not play (despite it being in the directory), and I also have a button (same one as mentioned above) that launches another PDF, and that PDF does not launch.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Kristi
I have something that may help here. Please send an E-Mail message to rstone75 (at) kc (dot) rr (dot) com and list the exact file names of the files you are linking to.
Once I have the actual file names, I can send you back some files that you can try to use for accomplishing the linking. Additionally, I'll want to know the exact relationship the files have. For example, will they simply be in the same folder as your project? Or will they perhaps be in a subfolder. And if a subfolder, the exact name of the subfolder.
    Cheers... Rick

  • FrameMaker 8.0p277 Generated PDF-to-PDF Links Don't Work On Solaris

Currently I create a PDF of a book index pointing to several guides. The company logo in each guide's PDF provides a link back to the index.
All the links worked on Solaris & Windows OSs. Now they do not work on Solaris. I get an error saying, "There was an error opening this document. The file cannot be found."
All files are located in the same directory and they are all there.
The only thing that I have changed is the source was in FrameMaker 7 and it is now in FrameMaker 8. I use Acrobat 9 Pro Extended 9.4.6 and I have the latest updates for both Acrobat and FrameMaker.
I did some more digging and found a difference in the generated postscript file.

I am trying to get off of FM7 and it is counter productive to keep generating our final PDFs from FM7 just to get them to work.
Has anyone else had this problem and know how to resolve it?

Cross-file links in PDFs authored in FrameMaker 8 use Unicode-encoded file paths and file names, which are only supported in Windows Acrobat/Reader 8.x (MacOS Acrobat/Reader 7.x or later).
As a result, cross-file links are not functional when the PDF is displayed in earlier Acrobat/Reader versions, even though the target PDFs files are present in the target location.
While it is possible (through post-processing) to change the links so that they are backward-compatible, I suggest checking whether one of the Reader versions available for Solaris supports Unicode filenames and indicating that such a version is required to view the PDFs.

  • PDF and MSWord links don't work once published

    Help,
I have created a four module course and published it using aggregate, it looks great except none of the links to the pdf or msword docs work.  I have tried several suggestions, but nothing works when the course is launched on another computer.  I get a path error when you click on the link.
Anyone have a helpful suggestion on how to get these to work.
One other note, when I go to publish the document Adobe tells me that I need to export the files...any idea how?
    tks.

Adobe Captivate will show this warning message about needing to export the files any time that it detects you have linked to another file or document that is not one of those it normally exports automatically at publish time.  It's really just reminding you that it's YOUR job to ensure that the files you are linking to are going to be in the right place when the published content is accessed by end users.
The best option is just to manually copy the files (in your case PDF etc) into the same publish folder location as the HTM and SWF files that Captivate creates.  Then all you need to use as a relative file path is the name of the file itself.
One thing to check as to why the links are not working is that you have Flash Global Security set up to trust the publish folder location.  Alternatively, upload your content to a web server and view it via a HTTP URL link.  That usually means that Flash Global Security won't be an issue.

  • Help? PDF link works in FF but not IE???

Hi....help please - www.webdesignalgarve.com/qdr2       if you click on the link below the page menu saying ' click here to view full project in pdf format' it doesnt work in ie but in FF no problem......can someone tell me whats up please?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, you cannot rely on this always working.  I, for example, have all .pdf files open outside the browser, so no matter how you have your site set up, it will never open within the browser window.
I would suggest just linking to the file directly.  If the user has the pdf plugin for their browser, the pdf will open in their browser.  Otherwise, it'll open in their pdf client as normal.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I make links work in PDFs on ipad?

How do you make links work in PDFs on ipad?

I downloaded your "test.pdf" file. First I tested it on a Mac in Acrobat and the links worked fine.
Then I transferred it to my iPad and opened it in Reader 10.3. The links worked fine. When I clicked OK to the message I quoted above, they took me to the site in Safari browser.
It could be that you need to reset your iPad. Hold down the Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time. Hold then thru the message about turning it off, until you see the Apple logo. Then let go.
    Relaunch Reader.

  • HELP: I need to link a PDF within PDF and be able to open and return to original PDF

I have a master PDF and have attached 7 supplemental PDF documents. I created "click here" icons and used the steps below so that the linked document would open. The problem is, once I open the supplemental PDF, it closes the original master. I would like to close the linked document and return to the master view. Is there a way to do this?
Or is there a way to do this from InDesign? I created master file in InDesign and exported as an Interactive PDF.  I created the buttons and linked them to external files. This works great as long as the master PDF and the links are all in one file, but that is a pain to send to a viewer. Ideally, I want to be able to send the master PDF to a viewer and not have to send a links folder. Is there a way to embed the supplemental PDFs into the master so that they are all combined into one file AND have the ability to use buttons to call up one of the attachments, close, and return to the original?
    Thanks in advance!!

I want to do the same thing that the original poster of this question wants to do. I haven't worked extensively with Acrobat so am finding by trial and error the several ways PDFs within PDFs can be accomplished. I'm using a trial version of Acrobat Pro X and have experimented with three options.
1 - I've created a Portfolio and am impressed with what that can do, though I think it may be "overkill" for the current size of my project.
2 - I've also tried creating this project as an index but discovered that the links I'd created in the original docs didn't work when I moved the index and its contents (keeping the file structure the same). I presume this means the links are absolute? I also don't understand how it is that users search a .pdx file, or how to present what I want to be the original opening PDF of indexed docs.
3 - I've also thought to create one PDF with attached PDFs, so I'd like to have you expand on your comment about creating a master document and attaching documents to it.
The specifics of my project are these: I have created a master directory that contains approximately 120 links. Most of the links are repeated three times (users can find in the directory the item they need in three different ways: alphabetically, by application, or by module; hence each item listed once in each of three categories). I want to make that directory the "master" PDF that users open first, and then locate within that PDF the 5-8 PDF documents that contain all of the places to which the directory links. I want the "master" directory to be self-contained and completely "portable" as far as all of the documents and links are concerned so that when I make the PDF available from our website users can open the master from there or copy it and have all of the docs they need with all of the links intact. I think I prefer that all docs open in new windows, since returning to the original doesn't seem very user friendly in Acrobat (I like the tabs feature in FoxIt when multiple PDFs are open...).
I'd like an opinion about the best way to accomplish what I need to do, and am also wondering whether there are other options I am unaware of. BTW, the reason we've decided to document this whole project in PDFs rather than HTML is because this project contains a big number of tables, which do not look consistent across various browsers (i.e., most of our tables look fine in IE and Firefox, but awful in Google Chrome...). In researching my issue on the Acrobat Windows forum I see that rendering tables in Acrobat is also an issue that seems to be unresolved.
    Thank you!
