PDF Troubles

I created a 68 page document in InDesign. Each page is pulled in from Photoshop or Illustrator so the total file size is big.  I cannot PDF it as one complete document; only in seperate files. If I try to do the whole thing I get "Failed to Export PDF"
This seems to be a memory issue because if I reboot my computer in between each time I create another PDF file I am able to include more pages in the file. (Also, depending on the size of the pages I can put more or less pages in each PDF file.) The funny part about this is that I have 4 GB of memory on my computer. I brought it into the repair shop and the guy spent 3 days on it and concluded that this is an Adobe issue not a computer problem. I tested this by trying it on a different computer and got the same results.
I am working on CS3 with Windows XP. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thank you in advance.
B.B.

Yes it is a memory issue, probably associated with virtual memory and not physical memory and can also be associated with how you put your document together. There may also be some “memory leaks” in the libraries used by InDesign (those particular problems appear to be resolved in InDesign 6 = CS4).
I have experienced similar problems in the past, but with files much larger than yours.
You indicated that each page was pulled in from Photoshop or Illustrator. How did you “pull them in?” If you did copy and paste or placed them via embedding them into the file, you might retry generating the document using links. Using links uses InDesign's memory space much more efficiently and the PDF creation process is much less likely to run out of memory. It also yields an InDesign document that by itself is relatively small.
Let us know how you placed that content and we'll try to help you further.

PS: With Windows XP 32-bit versions, anything more than 3 gigabytes (and possibly less than that) will actually be effectively ignored by the operating system and unavailable to your programs.

  • Printing and PDF trouble

I've been trying to complete a document and wish to place it in pdf format. I haven't manipulated the default layout. The trouble is that while the font and the layout look fine on the screen; when its printed or saved in pdf it comes out as though it's in 75% view with enormous margins on the left and top of the documents. Enlarging the font doesn't seem to help.
If it was a printer problem, for the record the printer is a hp deskjet 940c, the problem shouldn't carry over to the saved pdf.
Any suggestions as to what's wrong or what I'm not doing?
    Thanks

    Hi, Bigcat,
It sounds like you have "Comments" showing. Hide Comments and that should fix it.

  • PDF trouble-solving.

I had troubles viewing and manipulating PDF´s in Safari browser.
After downloading a PDF document, and then fiddeling with buttons/options in the browser-window, I lost access to the document, and the browser-window froze.
Just the browser "return page"-button; where available. A reload of the document returned a blank page.
Adobe Reader manual did not give me fixes for this, so I turned to MacUpdate.
    At http://www.macupdate.com/ I found 2 options resolving my problem;
"PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3" and "Safari-Display or Download PDF files 1.2".
The former is really a treat. Both is free for personal use. I have asked the developer of the former one; where to donate. No reply from him yet. I will further that information if it´s possible, at this site.
I suggest all personal users of these plugins honour the developers.
These plugins, both fixes PDF-viewing-issues in Safari, and maybe other browsers.
"PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3" has more options, but "Safari-Display or Download PDF files 1.2", fixes your basic PDF-view-problems.
Hope this info will be of use, for those stranded between mind, PDF´s, keyboard and screen.

  • PDF trouble - images not displaying

    Hi!
When I create a PDF file from Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, and view them on my Iphone 3G (normally as an email attachment sent to clients), the images do not show up ie: there are blank spaces. However, PDF's viewed from other people or in Safari DO display images - so I suspect my conversion from Illustrator/Photoshop to PDF might be the culprit. I normally just use "File" - "Save As" - "PDF".
Have searched on the Internet but cannot find a solution. Any advice/suggestions?
    Thx!

I had problems with Pages 2 a few times with particular images (scanned photos imported after editing with GIMP, I think) not showing up correctly in Adobe Reader (Preview was fine) – but only when the PDF had been exported from Pages using one of the many settings available for PDF making. On another export setting the same image would show up OK.
It wasn't consistent: other images prepared the same way as the problem image were fine, and the export settings (Better in the first case, Best in the second) where problems occurred were different.
My guess had been that certain photos were compressed by Pages/OSX in a way that was problematic for Adobe, but the instance where the Best setting was used seemed to bely that, since presumably under Best the images are not modified.
In each case I was able to export the PDF a different way - using the ColorSync filters - getting pretty much the same compressed size but with no problems with the images.
So, I always make sure I test my PDFs on different computers with versions of Adobe Reader before sending them out, either to a printer or for posting on a website. But that's only happened to me twice: usually there's no problem.
The other thing that has caused a problem with the printer (opening my PDF in InDesign) was a photo upon which I had multiple transparent layers of overlapping text. It was easily sorted by using a single layer. But others have had problems with layers/transparencies rendered in PDFs in Pages in the past.
There are many ways to export as a PDF or another image format, though. Open Applications/Utilities/ColorSync and look in the Help menu. Also in Preview, if you have Leopard. The Save As... menu in Preview 4.0 gives the following options, as well as containing all the ColorSync filters if you choose Format: PDF -
Format: GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, Microsoft BMP, OpenEXR, PDF, Photoshop, PICT, PNG, SGI, TGA, TIFF
So yes, there is a way to send the PDF as a TIFF if you really want to.

  • PDF trouble

I can open my PDF documents but they will not stay open; after about 10 seconds they close on their own. I've downloaded update from your web page but nothing has fixed the problem.

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Ipad pdf trouble

I have my pdf on documents can't figure out how to make it editable. Please help

You can't edit PDF files in Adobe Reader. It's a reading app.
If you owned Acrobat on a Mac or PC, you could do some editing of a PDF file.

  • PDF trouble after completing form and sending to coworker - arrives blank

I've entered information into the form and sent it but the receiving party can't see the information that has been entered.  If you click on each box it appears but prints out blank...  All info fully visible on my mac when I view it.  What am I doing wrong or missing in sending it to others?

What program are you using to complete the form?
If it is MacIntosh's "Preview" there is a well known issue with this program causing a minor corruption of form fields.
Script to Fix Mac OSX Preview.app Form Fill and Save
Or your co-worker could export the form data to an FDF file and then import that exported file and Acrobat will reprocess the fields and correct the corrupted from fields.

  • I have problem when opening a pdf page, my mouse control is hijacked to that tab when im on other tab, i cant scroll or use the middle rollling button, i have to click at the pdf tab then my control over the mouse middle button is restored.

I think I have this problem even on earlier version. The thing is I set open link in new tab and not switch over to the opened tab. My habit is to open a pdf page in the background and let it load first. What happen is that when the pdf page finished loading ( i do not set to download it), it hijacks my middle mouse button control. When i scroll down or scroll up on my original tab, it wont scroll on the tab, but insttead it scrolls on the pdf tab. I have to click on the pdf tab, then i can use the scrolling function on other tabs back. As for when i opened several pdf tabs, it seems i have to click on the tab that just finished loading, that means several times until they all finish loading. It has been getting on my nerve lately. And all pdf trouble i search from google led to unable to open pdf, firefox hang or crash when opening a pdf and the likes.

core-el, i don't see the advantage of that or i can't figure out how i'm supposed to use it. for starters, i have to click the mouse in order to get "add bookmark here" to open, which is no different than clicking on the star in the location bar, or right-clicking on the page. there are also options in the bookmarks toolbar, but they all require clicking the mouse & holding down the right button, etc.
my goal is to use keystrokes only. typing on the keyboard, using both hands, using the space bar & my left pinky finger to tab over are all painless routines for me. as soon as i have to take my fingers off the keyboard & use the mouse, the pain begins.
as i said, in older versions of firefox, all i had to do to bookmark a page was click ctrl>d, then tab over & arrow down, when appropriate, to find the folder & add the bookmark. for me, as a touch-typist whose speed is between 60 & 80 wpm, this is lightning fast.
if i have this wrong, please correct me. i just see it as more mouse clicks that don't save me time or pain.

  • I can not open or download files/PDF's. I keep getting the "Adobe Acrobat_Reader win binaries" message box. How can this be repaired so I can see PDF's? Thanks!

I do not much about computers (old school), but sure could use someone's help! I cannot read anything I try to view from a website. I keep getting a Adobe box popping up that says "Adobe Acrobat_Reader win binaries". Every time I click the "Yes" button, it does nothing. Thanks in advance!

To make a picture, like I did above - go to ACCESSORIES > SNIPPING TOOL.  When you click on snipping tool, the screen will gray out. Click and drag your cursor from one corner of the area you want to "snip" to the other - when you release, you will have a JPEG - save it as any other picture, or even email from the snip you just made.
THat doesn't advance the PDFs trouble solution, but it's good to know!

  • Quark Xpress Passport can't find the printer in Mac OS 9

Help! Been fiddling and now can't print to my HP 6940. Don't know what I've done I'm so stupid!

    Hello,
Sounds like you moved the drivers. I am a bit confused, this is 9 OS section, yor profile says
    10.4 I think.
Either way, I would go here
    http://www.hp.com/sbso/bussupport.html
and download new drivers. If you are running classic or both, be sure to install the drivers in the correct Operating system folder. This is easy if you are running OS 9 only.
My guess is you moved or disabled the driver. You could also try a sherlock search for the driver on your computer under 9, but this could get confusing.
I think I'd install new drivers from the web.

  • I need to configure Acrobat to display PDF files in Safari, but I have a lot of troubles to do it.I have OX S yosemite, I unistalled adobe acrobat, I closed safary and I installed the new version of adobe acrobat.

    Dear everyone
I need to configure Acrobat to display PDF files in Safari, but I have a lot of troubles to do it.
I read a european commission document explaining that
    http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/support/sep_usermanual.pdf
If Safari does not display pdf forms in the browser window, uninstall all older versions of Adobe Reader and download the most recent one. First close Safari and then install Reader. Launch Safari and you ought to be able to open the pdf files inside the Safari window. If you install Adobe Reader 10.1.x without first closing Safari, Safari will not display the pdf file inside its browser window until it is re-launched. For further help, please see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-safari-plug-acrobat-x.html
I have OX S yosemite, I unistalled adobe acrobat, I closed safary and I installed the new version of adobe acrobat
but when I open a web page that I need to allow me to display and modify PDF files it is not working.
I checked the following web page
    Troubleshoot Safari plug-in | Acrobat X, Reader X
    that is recommending the following:
The AdobePDFViewer plug-in is used to display PDF files in Safari using Acrobat and Reader.
This plug-in is installed as part of the Acrobat X or Reader X installation. The location of this plug-in is:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
but after the new installation with this folder is completely empty and I am still
    unable to open these pdf.
Does anybody knows anything else I can do?
    Best regards

  • , Trouble importing from text file into PDF Acrobat 9.0

    Hey all!
I'm trying to use the JavaScript found on this Adobe page to insert text into my PDF:
    http://help.adobe.com/livedocs/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/h tml/wwhelp.htm?context=Acrobat9_HTMLHelp&file=JS_API_AcroJS.88.502.html
    this.importTextData("/c/data/myData.txt", 0);
Replacing the path with my own path, of course.  However, I can't get it to work at all, it just crashes my JavaScript.  I was thinking it might have something to do with the privilege stuff which, admittedly, confuses me a bit.  But my understanding is that if you use the function without arguments, that shouldn't matter, and it will prompt the user for a path?
    this.importTextData();
However, that still crashes the JavaScript.  I'm not sure what exactly I am doing wrong here?
NOTE: I have tried running the JavaScript both in a checkbox and on page load.

Well I was having trouble getting it to work without a path, though that kind of mysteriously started working now despite the fact that I didn't really change anything.  I also assumed that part didn't apply to me because we are on 9, not 8, but maybe it means 8 and on?
I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my mind around privileged and non-privileged contexts.
These methods can be executed only in a privileged context, which includes console, batch and application initialization events.
What would be the simplest way to execute in a privileged context?  "Application initialization" sounds promising, does this mean when the application is first opened?  If so, how would you execute JavaScript this way?!

  • I already typed this in but here I go again:   Need to convert a pdf file right away.  Have not used my account for a while but is still open.  I used to have no trouble.  What has happened?

    Hi touser,
Can you please provide some specifics about the problem you're encountering? Do you get an error message, or does the file conversion process never complete? Is the problem specific to one file, or occur with every file you try to convert?
Please help fill in the blanks for us, so we know best how to help you resolve this issue.

  • Having trouble reducing PDF file size on export

Hi, I recently switched from Quark to InDesign and am having trouble figuring out how to reduce the size of a PDF on export.
The file has about 200 pages with about 300 EPS files, which are approximately 30-40K each. The file uses fewer than 10 fonts, all from two font families (Bembo Std and Univers Std). When I created a similar file in Quark, the exported PDF is ~5MG. However, when I export the file I created in InDesign, the PDF is 10xs larger (~50MG). I tried exporting using the High Quality Print and Smallest File Size settings, but the result was the same. (I think that is because there are no JPG images to compress, just vector files which are already tiny.)
If you have any suggestions for other settings to check, I would be grateful for the help. Overall, other than this issue, I have been extremely happy with InDesign.
    I am using CS5, v 7.0.4 on Mac OS X (10.6.8, Snow Leopard)
    Thank you,
    SH

Quark to the best of my knowledge still goes the Postscript to PDF route - I'm not 100% sure on that.
But here's why Export is differetn than how you print to Postscript and distill http://indesignsecrets.com/creating-pdf-export-or-use-distiller.php
Distilling is very much frowned upon, and Export from InDesign is considered the best workflow. And the file size is larger, but it does add a lot of important information to the PDF, which makes it superior than distilling.
But, there's a lot of document overhead in PDFs.
The High Quality setting is only meant as a guide.  It's not meant to be used, in my opinion, out of the box.
This explains why and how to counter it.

The Help files do give some clues

This PDF guide is MUST http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/cs3/articles/cs3_printguide.html
And besides that EPS files are considered legacy files by Adobe, I'm not sure how they're handled on PDF export. But you'd be better off saving to .ai from illustrator from now on.
    http://www.prepressure.com/library/file-formats/eps
Instead of EPS from photoshop - save as TIFF or PSD if all Raster. If it's raster + vector text layers, shapes or masks then save to PDF.

Trouble opening pdf's - I have received several pdf's from a friend via e-mail (Thunderbird). Some of them open just fine but others give me the message: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." My friend made sure that the files in question opened without issue on his computer (a PC). Further, I was able to open one of these "damaged" files on my Android phone, but I cannot open them on the Macbook Air. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
