PDF Version Issue

I am having a major problem. I have to save a PDF back to verion 1.4 . Everytime I use pitstop to change the version it works correctly but when I save the file and re-open it the file is back to a higher version again. I went into Pitstop preferences and made sure the "PDF Version" box is checked. This doesn't help. I tried everything I know of to stop this from happening and it always converts back to a higher version. This didn't happen with acrobat 8 but it is for Acrobat 9.
Please advise,
Thanks
Shawn

Open pdf file with a text editor. What does the first line say? BTW, Acrobat 9 change the pdf file specification using the PDF Optimizer.

  • Creating a seamless PDF, version issues and re-ordering

    Hi,
I'd like to create a PDF portfolio of my graphic design work. In the past I've created a PDF portfolio and added other PDFs or jpegs into them with difference pieces of work. However, is it possible to create a portfolio where a multi-page PDF (within the larger portfolio) can be viewed in it's entirety without having to open the file? The idea would be that you would see one page of the portfolio with a piece of work, scroll to the right and see another, then when you get to the multi-page PDF if you kept scrolling right it would just take you through that entire PDF instead of having to open the file.
Also, why is it that when you're looking at the first screen within a PDF porfolio, sometimes you'll see the first page of a multi-page document as the avatar for that document and other times you'll see the Adobe error page that says  "For the best experience, open this PDF in Acrobat X, or Adobe Reader X or later." I have Acrobat 11 so I don't know why this is happening. I've attached a screenshot of what I mean.
Finally, when I've tried to re-order files within the PDF, I've occassionally had success renaming the files (ie 1.jpg , 2.jpg, 3.jpg, 4.pdf, etc) in the "display name" column under the Files tab. I once had success doing an "Initial Sort" for display name but other times it hasn't worked. Is there anyway to make re-order work consistently?
    Thanks!

  • Reader 9 - problem with pdf version 1.0 and descenders

    2 big problems over here:
    * Reader9 will not properly open files created as pdf version 1.0/1.x
all text is cut off about 2/3 of the way down, whether or not in fields.
    * Any pdf file version above 1.0created with any version of GhostScript does not have the previous issue, However - no descenders of any font are coming out.
We do not have either problems with any version of Reader prior to 9

Cannot embed pdfs in Word doc which are PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) [This is associated with Adobe Reader 9]. Getting 'program not installed' error.
Pdfs with other versions are okay:
Tested successfully with Adobe Pro 9 (Version 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)), Reader X (Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x)) and XI (Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x))
Also cannot open embedded pdfs which have been embedded with this version (getting a similar error).
Importantly I have removed/disabled all security options in Adobe Reader, following numerous internet suggestions from Adobe and elsewhere. This does not fix the problem.
Currently the work around is to re-save the pdf with something other than Adobe Reader 9 (so the version updates), but we would prefer not to do this for all the old pdfs we have.
    Thank you,

  • 'Convert CMYK Colors to RGB' still runs havoc in 9! (Plus a PDF version problem)

This post is to warn people about severe issues, and how to avoid them. Issues with the CMYK color setting in FM9.x have been reported here earlier, such as:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1237696#1237696
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1237852#1237852
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1237165#1237165
However, I do not think this issue has been warned about anywhere near as much as it should have. And, as usual, Adobe is silent (they should have a big poster on their site warning about this issue! And they have even claimed that patches have "solved" the issues with CMYK).
Just recently, while experimenting with FM9 again, I had extreme problems, which, at first, seemed totally unrelated to this CMYK setting. But after having struggled extremely hard for many many many hours, I finally found out. Now is the time to inform others:
First a note about versions: FrameMaker 9.0p237, Acrobat Distiller 9.1, XP SP2
It looks perfectly okay on screen in FrameMaker, exactly as in FM8. But when saved as pdf, several things are "corrupted". Examples: no kerning after the letter 'T', such as the word 'Text'. Dotted leader for a right aligned tab disappears. Some objects from the master pages, such as a logo, become enclosed in a rectangle (a border of the frame/object), but it only happens on *some* body pages, whereas other body pages using the same master page are ok!!? Equations are formatted differently from the way they should, with the wrong font for number, etcetera.
    Solutions:
    1. When 'Save as PDF...', untick 'Convert CMYK Colors to RGB' in PDF Setup. Same setting is in the file's 'Format > Document > PDF Setup...'
A drawback with this method is that, as of Acrobat Distiller v9, it does not seem to respect the pdf version specified in the PDF job Options! I get PDF 1.6 with this method, despite my job option specifies version 1.5. (This happens also with FrameMaker 8 if Acrobat is v9.) So you *have* to optimize it in Acrobat in order to get a web friendly PDF (PDF 1.4 or 1.5).
    or
    2. Print to 'Adobe PDF'.
In this latter case, you can set the same 'PDF Setup' settings under the button 'Setup...', EXCEPT that there is no tick box for 'Convert CMYK Colors to RGB', and it does not matter what setting you have chosen in the file's 'Format > Document > PDF Setup...', it will be RGB conversion in any case. Make sure that after you exit the setting, the tick box for 'Print to File' is NOT ticked! This method respects the pdf version specified in the PDF job Options! I get PDF 1.5, which is what my job option specifies.
(For some reason, Acrobat/Reader does not render these two PDFs exactly the same, except in extreme magnification! Maybe it has to do with the different PDF versions of the files.)
In either case, the solution actually solves ALL problems I listed! Despite it seems to have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with colors! Some day in the distant future, CMYK might actually work! But, for myself, I would prefer a proper color management instead...
    Best Regards,
      /Harald

Oops!! Not until now I discover that under 'Solutions' I happened to write 'untick' where it should be 'tick'! I.e, colors SHOULD be converted to RGB in order to circumvent the problems! I.e it runs havoc in v9 when CMYK colors are NOT converted to RGB! Don't know how I came to write the opposite, but probably I started out by describing the situation where the problems are seen rather than describing how to avoid them.
Equally strange is that nobody corrected me, but perhaps the mistake was so obvious? (But whether you see problems or not might depend on what fonts you use. So, under certain special circumstances, CMYK might actually work without these reported problems.)
I am also a bit surprised that others haven't reported the issue that the PDF version set in PDF job Options isn't respected when using 'Save As PDF' and Acrobat 9? (Or maybe someone has, but I have missed it.)

  • How to retain the PDF's compression when changing the PDF version?

    Hi,
I need to change the PDF version from "1.5" to "1.6" without changing the original PDF compression (i.e compressed object streams) using "Acrobat X pro".
I had tried to change one sample PDF version from 1.5 to 1.6 using "PDF Optimizer" and found the following results.
    ================================
Input PDF contains the following properties:
    Document Properties
    1. Total pages:256
    2. PDF version: 1.5
    3. Tagged PDF: No
    4. Fast Web View: No
    Available Compressions (Identified through "Preflight>Pages")
    1. Page description is compressed for all the pages (256)
    2. Pages has compressed object streams for "254" pages except "Front Cover" and "Back Cover"
Output PDF contains the following properties:
    Document Properties
    1. Total pages:256
    2. PDF version: 1.6
    3. Tagged PDF: No
    4. Fast Web View: No
    Available Compressions (Identified through "Preflight>Pages")
    1. Page description is compressed for all the pages (256)
    2. Pages has compressed object streams for all the "256" pages including "Front Cover" and "Back Cover"
    ================================
"Pages has compressed object streams" found  for all the "256" pages (but input PDF has only 254 pages) including "Front Cover" and "Back Cover".
But I want to retain all the properties of input PDF with version change. This is my actual requirement.
I hope that Acrobat expert will offer some useful suggestions for the above. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Raja. S

    Thanks for the reply.
I had tried everything under "Clean Up" option (PDF optimizer>Clean Up) but "Pages has compressed object streams" applied automatically.
Note: If I check the option "Optimize the PDF for fast web view" under Clean Up, then output retain the required source PDF  compression. But I must not change the source PDF to "Fast web view".
This is not testing purpose and this is one of our client requirement. Kindly advise with better solution to solve this issue.
    Thanks,

  • How to change the pdf version on mail merge

    Hi All,
I am using AA8 with MS Word 2002 on XP SP3.
I am trying to mail merge from Word using Excel spreadsheet as source data, which seems to be working fine. But I need to create the PDF's in pdf version 1.4 or 1.5. Regardless of Distiller settings, the pdf are being created as pdf version 1.6. So older version of reader cant read the new pdf files.
I am sure this is a simple issue, but can anyone offer a solution???
    Thanks.

Still not solved. It looks that it is not possible to change the column width of the PDF download.

  • Substitution string used in custom Report column name does not display in PDF version of report

I am using Apex 4.2.6.00.03, Apex Listener 2 via Glassfish4 and have set up all my applications and reports on this system.  We previously used Oracle 10.2, with Apache with a custom fopping document.
My issue is that I have a report that has custom column headings using a substitution string to pull in the begin or end date for the report.  When the report is run and displayed, the column headings appropriately display the date.  However, when I try to set up the Print to PDF option, the column headings are not displaying correctly.
Is it possible to use a substitution string in the column heading?  I am able to use the substitution string in the Page Header and Page Footer and those display correctly.
In the Report Attributes setup I have set the "Strip HTML" to Yes and I have four columns that are using the &"ITEM NAME". string.  See below for actual display:
The report column headings in APEX displays correctly (bold is the substitution detail):
Fund    Account Description          Balance 07/01/2014     Budget/Goal FY 14-15     YTD Actual 02/28/2015         Ending Balance 02/28/2015
In the Print Attributes setup, when I get to the Report Columns section, the Heading column displays the headings as set up in the Report Attributes custom and I am not able to edit these names.  See below:
In the version of the report that is Printed to PDF I get the following for display:
Fund           Account Description           Balance %26amp;P347_BEGIN_DATE.     Budget/Goal %26amp;P347_FY.     YTD Actual %26amp;P347_END_DATE.     Ending Balance %26amp;P347_END_DATE.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Pat

First, the misspelled word is a test object and not data.
    Second, all data display correctly.
Third, text object is displaying the old misspelled word.
Fourth, I have eliminated the possibility that problems in of my pdf export routine cause this issue by exporting directly from Crystal Reports Viewer. I print the report to the crystal report viewer. The report looks good. The text object is spelled correctly. Then I click the Crystal Reports viewer's export button in the left upper corner and I export to both EXCEL and PDF. The excel export looks good. The pdf export is misspelled. All the export occurs internally in Crystal reports.
Fifth, I found outthat all users who have this problem have the ADOBE PDF writer installed. I am just suspicious that ADOBE writer is interferring with Crystal export
Sixth, I cannot recreate this problem on any of our development and test machines. It only happens on end-user laptops.
Seventh, I changed the name of the report that had this problem and created a new version and installed on end-user laptop. The behaviour still persists. User saved the report as both RPT and PDF. RPT export looks good. PDF version has the spelling problem. Data on both reports is up-to-date and good. I copied the same RPT export to my PC and exported it to PDF, the pdf looks good. That is why I think something on the end-users laptops is causing the export to use some cached template.
One more thing I did was to change the report name in VB.NET project, recreated a new package and installed on end-user's laptop. The same exact problem is still there.
I have worked with Crystal Reports more than 15 years and I have never such a weird behaviour before. I know this sounds very weird. We are all baffled by what is happening.

  • PDF Version

    Hi all,
I am converting my smartform to pdf output using convert_otf; i have no issues here.
After generating pdf i need pdf document to be higher than 1.4(open pdf file>File>Properties..here you see pdf producer(which is SAP r/3 release 6.40) and pdf version 1.3
I installed adobe acrobat reader 9.0(which should produce pdf version higher than 1.4) on my PC and also did it on server but still no luck; Is there a place i need to install new acrobat reader?
I did check all the sap notes and sdn;they all talk about conversion of fonts/images etc and general conversion issues
    Any thoughts/suggestions?
    SR

Looks like in sap standard it always generates pdf version 1.3

  • 10.6.7 - general pdf creation issues?

I wondered whether anyone else had run into this issue after updating to 10.6.7 when using pdfs created by Preview - perhaps related to the pdf/font issue.
If it is generally happening, then the 10.6.7 pdf-font issue has an even larger
    impact than previously described:
    1. Open a pdf document in Preview
    2. Select a region and save to clipboard
    3. Save as a new pdf file
    4. Then try importing it as a "Picture" into any of the new Office 2011 apps: Word, PPT, etc.
This crashes my office 2011 apps (latest version, 14.02) But NOT any earlier version of Office (2008. etc.), which may not do as much pdf checking.
Before the 10.6.7 upgrade (ie, 10.6.6), this never happened with Office 2011.
Acrobat complains when opening the Preview-created pdfs about 'missing fonts', so I suspect some sort of pdf creation issue.
Any fixes (besides the previously suggested one of downgrading to 10.6.6)
If it's a real bug (not just local to my system), then it's a more far-reaching one than previously described.

    rcberwick wrote:
So, 3 different Apple tech support people say they know this problem affects
"multiple applications, including any that deal with pdf files" but that "no fix is
    currently in the works"
That is wrong because it only involves OpenType Postscript fonts.
The only solution offered so far is to "downgrade by doing Archive & Install" and
then re-applying each Combo Upgrade, starting with 10.6.3 up to 10.6.6.
You wouldn't have to do that either. That is the point of a Combo update. You only need to apply the one you want. It includes all of the previous updates.

  • PDF version not clear on certain pages

When I make a PDF version of my Pages document, any page that contains a shape has degraded quality font. The only two fonts I'm using are Verdana and Times New Roman.
    Any suggestions?

    Peter,
What you are saying makes perfect sense. I know transparencies and other effects can cause problems - for example in iweb, adding effects to HTML text turns the whole text box into a graphic. However, this doesn't seem to be the issue here.
In my doc, I have no graphics overlapping text boxes. The graphic is well apart from the text box. It's as if adding graphics anywhere on a page causes the whole page to be rendered as a graphic - perhaps then being rendered, as you suggest, as a bitmap.
To add to the confusion, I thought I had this figured out. I had been using TIFF files and tried JPG instead. It seemed to make a difference. However, continued testing showed that was NOT what was making the difference . . .
Now I'm finding that the PDF is rendering differently depending on which screen I'm viewing it on, what magnification I'm using and what program I'm using to view it!
I'm running a macbook w. Intel core 2 duo, Snow Leopard. I also have a 22" Samsung monitor attached for a dual monitor setup. When I open the PDF on the macbook screen (using Adobe Reader) at 122%, the text page with graphics looks OK (not great, but OK) when I drag it over to the bigger monitor, it initially looks the same. However, if I re-size it on the bigger monitor, say go from 122% to 125%, I get the jagged edges text look again!
OK, next step: Go to a different macbook, boot up in bootcamp & Windows. Same PDF with graphics looks fine in Adobe Reader in any magnification.
Another option: Try on old mac G5 power PC (running Leopard) Same PDF looks fine in Preview. However, download latest version of Adobe Reader and we're back to the Jagged text look.
Go back to original, dual-monitor macbook and try same PDF in Preview. Looks fine.
So, the issue appears to be specifically how Adobe Reader is rendering the PDF??
Using Adobe Reader 8.1.6 on main macbook, 7.0 on Windows and the latest 9 something, on G5
At this point, I am using Verdana font, 13 pt., dark gray on a white background in my doc. It appears I can export from Pages with graphics to PDF and get a PDF that renders on-screen in MOST cases in acceptable form. However, I wish I felt better that ALL by clients were seeing the same thing (Isn't that the whole idea behind PDFs?) rather than have to worry that some may see poorly rendered text.
I very well may still be missing something here, so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know!
And, thanks Peter for the suggestion!

  • Crystal JRC PDF Export Issue

We are experiencing a PDF export issue with Crystal JRC version 12.2.202.  The PDF report shows 1 of 3 pages but ONLY the first page is generated.  When this occurs, ALL other users that are exporting to PDF experience the same issue with any multiple page report.  I can't find any errors in the log that would indicate what the problem is.  To resolve the issue, I have to recycle the WebLogic application server that hosts  the JRC, which would indicate something gets "locked" in memory and gets cleared when the app server is bounced.
Any ideas on how to resolve this ?

    Hi Ted,
    Thanks for the response!
Though, the mentioned Sun JVM Bug explains the root-cause, the Bug status also state that it is not fixed yet.
Also, we are reluctant to change the JVM Option to -Xint due to unknown impacts on JVM optimizations.
Is there a patch released for CrystalReports to deal with this behavior? We are using CRJ runtime 11.5.7.620 and seeking for a patch on this version.
    Thanks.

  • Preserving PDF version after Save during "Extend Features in Reader"

    Hi,
I'm using Acrobat Pro 9 and I'm attempting to make a fillable form that needs to be compatible with Acrobat 5 (PDF v1.4) . I can make the form, but when I extend features in reader, the copy it saves is PDF v1.6 (Acrobat 7). Is there any way to maintain the PDF version when doing this, or is this not possible with V1.4 PDFs?

  • PDF version - change to 1.7 by default

    Hi there,
When I create a PDF in Acrobat Pro X, the default PDF version is 1.5(Acrobat 6).  Now when I go to Print --> Properties --> Adobe PDF Settings tab and click on the "Edit" button, I can click on the "Compatibility" drop down box and select "Acrobat 8.0(PDF 1.7)."  This will allow me to create a 1.7 PDF - but it is a lot of work for our end users - is there a way to just make Acrobat create 1.7 PDFs by default?  Registry setting possibly?  The PDFs have to be version 1.7, long and uninteresting story.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Assuming you are using AA8 or later, you simple set that in the settings file. You may have to save the settings file to a new name, not sure. In that case, make the new name your default settings file in the Adobe PDF printer and in PDF Maker.

  • Adobe Reader for Windows Phone cannot open older PDF versions?

I've found that Adobe Reader for Windows Phone displays the following error when I try to open certain PDF documents: "There was an error opening the document".
After doing some limited testing I found that it can successfully open PDF documents which were saved as "PDF version: 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)", but the error appears when it tries to open documents saved as the older format "PDF version: 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x)". (I am checking the filetype version by opening the documents in Adobe Reader X on my PC and looking at the document properties).
My phone is a HTC 7 Mozart running Windows Phone 7.5. I noticed the problem when I was using the SkyDrive app to try and look at some PDF files I have saved in SkyDrive. SkyDrive downloads the file and then passes it to the Adobe Reader app to view. It works when I look at a newer version 1.5 PDF but not the older v1.3 type. Unfortunately my HP Photosmart 5510 scanner outputs scans as PDF files and only in the older file version.
I've tried reinstalling the SkyDrive app and the Adobe Reader app on my phone. (The Adobe Reader app is version 10.1.1, build 20120919).
Is this a known limitation, or is this a bug?
If this is a limitation that won't be fixed - is there an easy way I can convert my files to the newer file type? (Adobe Reader X on my PC doesn't seem to offer a way to convert existing files)
    Thanks!
