PDF Viewing differently on different PCs.

I have created a design in InDesign CS3 using windows.
I have saved this design in low quality and high quality PDFs. When I view the PDF on the original computer I made the design in it looks fine.
When I view the PDF on another computer it does not appear correctly. The main problem being some colour gradients are showing either white or fading in the wrong direction.
On the first computer where it views fine is Adobe Reader Version 8. The second computer where it is viewing wrong is Adobe Reader version 5.
I can't understand this myself as surely a PDF is a PDF?
I tried opened the InDesign file directly on the second computer and saved a PDF again but the appearance was still wrong.
Is this a case of different Adobe Readers? Or could there be another problem?
Any ideas would be appreciated!

> I can't understand this myself as surely a PDF is a PDF?
Wrong...very, very wrong.
Without seeing the files in question I can't tell you what's happening
but Acrobat Reader 5 is now four versions out of date. InDesign is
capable of creating PDFs that are far more feature rich than those that
could be read by that version.
Reader is free. Update it.
BTW, QuarkXPress cannot create the kinds of PDFs that InDesign can.
Unless something has changed in version 8, it's incapable of exporting
even the simplest transparency.

  • PDFs look different in Adobe reader and Acrobat professional compared to the built in PDF viewer on windows 8

    Hi there,
    I have been trying to narrow down an issue we have been having for some time in printing PDF files and finding that they look different on paper compared to screen.  Up until today our big KIP plotter got the blame, but as I have been collecting notes on a little windows 8 tablet I noted that PDFs opened in the windows PDF viewer have the same visual defects as the printouts.  My example today is that on a CAD drawing there is a small box/frame with a number in their, I tried printing and the frame was completely blacked out.  As a test I tried saving the PDF as a TIFF file from Adobe Acrobat professional and this file had the same fault as the printed copy.  When I open it in the windows 8 pdf viewer I can see that there is a shading within this box that does not show on Adobe Reader (latest version 11.0.10.32), the adobe reader and acrobat pro version both show a white background to the box.  We have been having lots of issues with sections being missing from drawings and overly feint lines.
    I am not sure where to start trying to narrow down why we are getting different results in different PDF readers.  Is there anyone who maybe able to point me in the right direction?  It almost feels like the shading or colour density is not being consistent when PDFs are being opened in different packages.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

    Some PDF viewers comply with the PDF ISO Standard (ISO 32000) "just enough" while others (such as Adobe's) fully comply.
    As with anything there's a cost to using anything that comes from a "just enough" approach.

  • Good pdf viewer with different functionalitites

    Hello folks,
    I am looking for a good pdf viewer (would be nice if it could support pdf editiing) to view same pdf document at the same time. Document viewer is good enough but when I want to view the same pdf file which is already open with Document viewer, I can not open the file with Document viewer again. Therefore I am looking for a good pdf viewer. I have installed pdfedit, but it seems like over kill for pdf viewing purpose. Which tools do you use?
    thanks!

    I think the PDF viewer built in to Mendeley supports highlighting, and it has a Linux native client (mendeleydesktop in AUR), though last I tried it, I wasn't very impressed.
    Archie_Enthusiasm wrote:
    is there any okular for gnome ?
    isn't it? Maybe I should be go with evince or epdfview or mupdf.... I think they should be fine for viewing purpose. any other pdf editing tools other than pdfedit but for linux OSs?
    What kind of editing do you need to do? There are a lot of apps for combing PDFs, adding pages, cropping them, etc. (PDFsam, PDFshuffler, PDFmod, jPDFtweak, PDFjam, pdftk with various GUIs, etc.) But if you mean actually editing the text (in which case it's far better generally to go back to the source file, if available), then there's not much beyond what has already been mentioned.
    There are some webapps though you could use with Linux, like PDFescape, PDFHammer, TouchPDF, etc. I don't have a lot of experience with them.
    In general, I think there are more and at least as good PDF tools for Linux than there are for Windows. The thing is, however, that they follow the Unix philosophy and hence focus on doing only one thing (and doing it well), so you need different programs for doing different things. I use mupdf or evince for viewing PDFs, pdflatex for creating PDFs, pdfsam or pdftk for splitting and combining them, jPDFtweak for changing metadata or bookmarks, BRISS for cropping them, ghostscript or calibre for converting them, etc. No one tool does it all, but all together, I'm perfectly content.

  • Format on HTML report different than on PDF view

    I have a Quote report based on Product Revenue that we send to our customers. I have it formatted nicely when initially displayed and also when viewed with the Printer Friendly HTML option. But... when I view it as a PDF, it is not even close.
    The layout of the report uses a narrative section with HTML formatting to get the elements to align correctly, per the documentation. The HTML I use is as follows:
    Narrative Section formatting code:
    <table width="600">
    <tr><td colspan=3>  <div align="center"><b><font size="5" face="Times">
      @10</font><br>
    <font size="4" face="Times" >  Prepared Exclusively For: @8</font></b>
    </div></td>
    </tr>
      <tr> <th width="250"><div align="left">Quote Details</div></th> <th width="50">   </th><th width="300"><div align="left">Sales Manager Info:</div></th></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>Quote ID: @9</td><td> </td><td>Name: @16</td></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>Quote Date: @15</td><td> </td><td>Email: @17</td>
    <tr><td>Quote Expiration: @14</td><td> </td><td> </td></tr>
    <tr><td colspan=3><div align="center"><b>Phones - Cell:</b> @18, <b>Work:</b> @20, <b>Fax: </b> @19 </div></td></tr>
    </table>
    Notes: @11Is there another way to get the HTML view and PDF view to look the same (or at least close)?
    (more details and examples here --> [HTML and PDF Views|http://crm.nurserysupplies.com/images/CRM_HTML_and_PDF_views.doc])

    To date, this is considered a product limitation. I just talked with an escalation manager regarding this very issue, and he offered to bring this up with the product managers/engineers on 5/15/09. I recommend escalating this issue and asking your escalation manager to do the same.

  • Google Chrome PDF viewer displays different fonts

    When I design a document in either Indesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop I use many custom fonts. I export my PDF's as optimized as possible for web viewing from the layout program itself.
    I don't stop there. I open my exported PDF in Acrobat and optimize the file further using the Optimize PDF tool. I flatten everything out, but I keep my fonts embedded. When I drag and drop the file in Google Chrome or Firefox the fonts change. I get some cheap looking serif font instead of my slab serif. I've tried unembedding the font as well and I get the same result.
    What gives?
    I just want to make sure this isn't something I'm doing wrong. What's weird is it happens in Firefox/Chrome, but it doesn't happen in Safari.
    Firefox/Chrome PDF viewer:
    Safari PDF viewer:

    Interesting.
    However, as what each of these browsers does to render a PDF is dictated by the respective coding discussions of that would have to take place each browsers "developer space".
    Nothing there is controlled by Adobe eh.

  • My pdf title is different in different browsers how to make it same ?

    The pdf file which is on my site when opened in different browsers shows different title. how to make it same in all browsers ? Like in mozilla it shows file name like abc.pdf as title but in chrome it shows URL of the page as title and in IE it shows the domain of the page as title ?

    Are you using the same viewer in all 3 browsers?
    Firefox's built-in PDF viewer will extract one of the PDF document properties if available and show that along with the file name. At least that's what was happening in this thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/965816 PDF preview creates bad title for page].
    You can try switching between the built-in viewer and the Adobe Acrobat viewer as described in this article to see whether that makes a difference: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].
    But, as for how to make different viewers consistent, hmm..., I'm not sure you can.

    Yes. In Form Edit mode select the field(s), press Ctrl+C and then move to
    the other file and press Ctrl+V.

    Does Firefox switch to full screen if you press F11 ?
    You can also try the F10 key to see if that brings up the menu bar.

  • Creating View Object with different criteria

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to execute the following queries in the application logic. We have YEAR table with mileage rates with different effective dates. If the service date is greater than any of the existing effective dates we need to get the rate with that effective date. if the service date is less than the existing effective dates, then we have to get the rate with least effective date.
    SELECT mileage_rate, ... FROM year
    WHERE eff_date =  (SELECT MAX(eff_date) FROM   year WHERE  eff_date <= :bServiceDate)
    SELECT MILEAGE_RATE, .... FROM YEAR WHERE
    EFF_DATE =  (SELECT MIN(EFF_DATE) FROM YEAR)
    We have to execute the 1st query and if there is no matching records then we have to take the second query with min effective date. At present we are creating two view objects for the above scenario. Is there any possibility to create one view object with different criteria. What is the best solution to handle the above problem in ADF.
    Thanks and Regards,
    S R Prasad

    Well on the ViewObjectImpl you can fire the method getQueryHitCount() passing in the required ViewRowSetImpl. If you get the query hit count as 0, use can attached the other query and execute it.

  • I'm unable to read pdfs in what I'd call Mozilla's pdf-viewer (ie. in a new tab, but inside the browser). This broke between morning and afternoon of 15.10.14.

    I have followed instructions on a forum on checking through 'Options' that my browser is still set to open pdfs inside Mozilla and it is.
    It frequently comes up with a bar along the top saying 'This PDF might not be displayed correctly.' Then a button 'Open in Different Viewer', which I've tried pressing, but nothing has happened. (I don't actually want to open it in a different viewer, I want to open in Mozilla).
    I'm currently doing a lot of research work and this makes it a lot longer so would REALLY appreciate any help :)

    The built-in viewer has limitations, definitely. If you prefer that to Adobe Acrobat, you might try the latest "Development" version of the viewer, which may have improved feature support but with its limited test cycle, could be more crashy. There's a link to it about halfway down this page under Firefox:
    https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js
    Otherwise, you might need to use the Acrobat plugin. (I think you have seen the article, but just in case: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].)

  • PDF View "Render document failed"

    I've done quite a bit of looking around, and can't seem to find any fix for preventing a "render document failed" error message when opening certain pdfs (it looks like the discussion of this problem has really died down over the past year or so). I contacted HP's Palm support, but all they did was tell me that it was a known problem and that the engineering department was working on it. When I asked for possible work-arounds, they didn't have any (other than suggesting a pdf-to-word online converter, which does not allow my necessary zooming or landscape rotation). They also couldn't explain why the new TouchPad can open multiple pdfs at once (of different types- even pdfs with comic book graphics), but the Palm Pre Plus can't.
    Or is there some trick to manipulating the pdf so that it will render? I've tried reducing the file size, flattening the images, removing metadata, making it compatible with all sorts of earlier versions of Acrobat, and making it a "read only" file, but nothing's seemed to work. A 28 MB file will open just fine and allow me to read ALL of it (along with zooming and the landscape rotation using PDF Redux), but another 8 MB file gives me that "Render document failed" error message.  I'd appreciate any suggestions (or a fully functional pdf viewer on this "business" smartphone)!
    Post relates to: Pre Plus p100una (AT&T)

    I can't help, but raise another question...
    Others, is there another pdf reader in the App Catalog that he could try?

  • Can't keep extension settings different in different profiles

    I created a second profile called Shopping. I imported the extensions from my default profile into it. I wanted to run Shopping with a different set of enabled and disabled extensions from what I normally run on my Default profile. (On Shopping I enabled a number of shopping-related extensions I normally keep disabled on Default.) But I have found that I'm not able to separate the two profiles in this respect. When I brought up Default after using Shopping, the enabled/disabled configuration I had left Default with had been replaced with the enabled/disabled configuration of Shopping. This defeats my whole purpose in creating the Shopping profile. How can I keep the enabled/disabled extensions configurations of these two profiles separate?

    If you used Sync to do that "import", disable Sync for at least one of those Profiles.

    Thank you for your suggestion. I have Sync enabled for all the profiles. To my surprise, however, Sync was of no use in getting Default's extension collection into Shopping. For that I had to resort to the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox.
    I will try disabling Sync on Shopping.

  • How to get dark elements in background to be visible on PDFs viewed on mobile devices?

    I would appreciate any information about how to export to PDF an InDesign document, which has multiple dark jpeg layers used to create a background, so that those elements appear in mobile device PDF viewing, just as they are seen on a computer monitor's version of the PDF viewing experience.
    On mobile devices - iPhone and iPad - the background of the PDF appears simply as black. All the other texts and color photos in the foreground areas of the InDesign document appear perfectly on the mobile devices on the PDF.  Yet, the darker background elements render as solid black on the mobile devices.  Perhaps, this is always the case so that the PDF can be rendered viewable on mobile devices more quickly. I don't know.  The same PDF is viewed perfectly on computer monitors. This is only an issue with the mobile device viewing of the PDF.
    I've tried everything I know to do to choose different and particular settings in the "Adobe PDF preset" type area from within InDesign in order to create viewable background elements via a PDF viewed on mobile devices.
    Any information as to particular settings for the InDesign document to Adobe PDF which would allow ALL elements to be seen on ALL electronic devices would be especially helpful.

    Steve,  thank you for your post as well.  Please see my first reply, which was in reply to Bob Levine's question.  I can't provide a link to the document because it's part of a collaborative work that I'm contracted for - so I can't violate that with a public sharing of the PDF.  Otherwise, I would share a link.  But your comment about the different app Readers you used, gave me the idea to try all of them that I have.  Because the doc was in a Dropbox shared folder, I could access it via my Dropbox app on my iPhone/iPad.  So, I decided to go through multiple options with what they allow you to open a PDF in, to read it.  I had only tried a few.  Then after your comment I decided to try whatever else they had and tried the Adobe PDF reader one - and it opened with all the visual elements there.  I'll have to tell the folks, that I'm doing the work for, to open it in the ADOBE PDF Reader app now.
