PDF viewing in Safari broken since Acrobat x (CS5.5) installation

I Installed creative suite 5.5 Design Premium, and since then Safari no longer tries to open PDF files. I get a white page only. Right clicking does result in the option to download the file which works. But I would like to restore the old behavior. any suggestions? OS 10.6.6 Safari 5.05.

Can you check if Safari is running in 64-bit mode? For this, right click on Safari application in /Applications and choose 'Get Info'. Try checking the option 'Open in 32-bit mode' and relaunching Safari. Does it work for you?

  • Restoring Preview as default pdf viewer in Safari

    Hi,
I mistakenly set Acrobat 7 as my default pdf viewer in Safari and now cannot change back to preview. I tried to click on a pdf doc and set preview as the default, but that doesn't work for pdf files that I need to download.
I reset Safari, and now it no longer asks me to choose an Acrobat to use, but will not display the download, most likely because it is trying to use Acrobat 5.0 that is installed and is incompatable with Safari.
I just want preview back. Does anyone know how to do this?
thanks in advance for your help.
    Amy

    Tuttle,
    THANK YOU!!!!!!
I was going crazy trying to figure that out. Most of my pdfs (scientific papers)don't print well from Adobe. I have a LaserWriter 4/600 PS that I hooked up to my Airport Express via a crossover ethernet/Farallon system.
I'm writing a paper and really need to be able to do this.
Thanks for the quick reply. You continue to save me.....

  • Reinstate Preview as PDF viewer for Safari

I am trying to get Preview to work as the default PDF viewer in Safari. I have deleted the Adobe Reader and Silverlight plug-ins from Library/Internet Plug-ins. I selected Preview as the default app for PDFs (all instances) in the info pane of a PDF. I restarted Safari and rebooted the Mac. Now it seems that Safari has no ability to view a PDF inline; it immediately downloads any PDF I click on and opens it with Preview.
I looked for a way to reinstall Safari, although I'm not sure that is a solution, but did not find a Safari download on the Apple website. Do I need a plug-in or should the functionality be built into the browser?
How do I get a PDF file to display as a web page in Safari using Preview?
    Thanks -
**OS X 10.10 Yosemite on a Macbook Pro Retina 13"

    HI,
Right or control click a PDF file on your hard drive. Then click: Get Info
In the Get Info window click the pop up menu where you see: Open with.
Select Preview. If Preview isn't available from the list click: Other
Navigate to the Preview app and select it then click the Change All button.

  • How do I change my default PDF viewer in Safari?

I recently downloaded Acrobat Reader. Ever since, when I have opened PDF files on the internet, they have opened in Acrobat. How on earth do I switch the default back to Preview, or the regular Safari pdf viewer? I don't want to view my internet PDF's in acrobat because it takes forever to load them and it is extremely cumbersom for my purposes.

To remove Acrobat as your PDF reader, go to your User Library>Internet Plug-in Folder. There you'll see the Acrobat plug-in. Click on it, then "command key + delete" will move it to the trash. Note: If your Plug-ins are used for more than one user account, you'll find them in the same folder I mentioned, however, they will be in the Main Library.
While Preview is an option for PDF viewing, I prefer PDF Browser Plugin. It's free for personal use. Quick and easy to use, I think you'll like it.

  • CS3 Disables Preview as Default PDF Viewer in Safari

    Hey Guys,
I can't figure this out for the life of me. Since I've installed CS3 with adobe acrobat, each time I click a PDF link I'm asked to choose an app to open the pdf, and preview is not an option.
preview is so much easier than acrobat for this kind of stuff!
    any ideas?

I don't think you can blame Safari for this response. I get the same response in Firefox and Safari. It seems to be a strong-arm tactic of Adobe. I don't consider the Schubert plugin an elegant solution as it is shareware so either you pay for a license or you tolerate a nag screen every time you want to view a PDF file in Safari. The solution seems to be to move the AdobePDFViewer.plugin out of the root level of the Internet Plug-Ins folder such as to the Disabled Plugins folder. Quit and relaunch Safari and it should view PDF files as embedded. If later you change your mind and want to use Adobe Reader to view PDF files in Safari, you should move the AdobePDFViewer.plugin back to the root of the Internet Plug-Ins folder.

  • PDF viewer and Safari

The acrobat PDF viewer does not open when reading PDF files in Safari. The pdf file is opened with "preview" in safari instead. How do I get the PDF viewer to work with Safari. I have installed the acrobat reader and it detected that PDF viewer was not installed and installed it but it still doesn't open in a pdf viewer format.
    Any solutions?

    Songstress,
I believe that this problem can happen if you have conflicting PDF plug-ins in your Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins folder. If you want to use Adobe's readers, you can use Acrobat's "Repair" option (I believe it's under the Help menu in Acrobat Pro. If you prefer to use Apple's own reader, remove Adobe's PDF plugin from the above-mentioned folder. You may want to check out Manfred Shubert's popular PDF Browser plugin (http://www.shubert-it.com/).
Also, it would be work checking your ~/Library/Internet Plugins folder (in your Home directory). That is normally empty, so if you have a PDF plugin there, it could be messing things up.

  • Default PDF viewer in Safari... removing Adobe Reader

I recently installed Adobe Reader because I find it easier to mark-up documents than in Preview, and now it is the default viewer in Safari.  I have tried to change this, but the help I have found on the internet isn't working... there is no internet plug-in (that I can find) to delete, and the preferences in Reader have the "Display PDF in browser using" box grayed-out, so I can't check that either.  Any advice?
Also, if you know of a better program for reading PDFs (my main problem with mark-ups on preview is that it doesn't isolate individual columns, so when highlighting, it highlights all the way across the page, as opposed to individual columns) then please share!
    Thanks!

Here is the link with instructions from Adobe.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html
Go to the section called "Disable AdobePDFViewer plug-in" and follow the instructions.
You must have root user privileges to change the Safari plug-ins. To display PDFs using the Safari PDF viewer, you must disable the Adobe PDF Viewer.
    Quit Safari.
Log in as the root user. The root user privileges aren't enabled by default because the root user can change system files. For more information and instructions, see one of the following Apple documents: Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X or OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user.
Choose Go > Go To Folder.
Type /Library in the Go To The Folder field, and click Go.
Create a new folder in the Library folder, and name it Internet Plug-ins Disabled.
Open the Internet Plug-ins folder, and move both the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and the AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin into the new Internet Plug-ins Disabled folder.
    Note:
If both AdobePDFViewer plug-ins are still in the Internet Plug-ins folder, drag them now to the trash. You may be asked for your name and password.

  • Q: How to restore Preview as the default PDF viewer in Safari

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro for Mac loaded and it took over the responsibility to display PDF documents in my browser but as much as I like Acrobat, it turns poor little Safari into a tortoise when viewing PDF's. Preview is 100x faster for simple PDF viewing and I'd like to restore that integration. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get that back in Safari without uninstalling Acrobat? I don't have an issue with files on my hard drive, just Safari.
    Thanks!
    JimN

Thanks guys for the good thread. Excuse me for jumping in here but I am seeing a very similar issue but slightly different and wondering any one can lend a hand. I used to have Acrobat 8.x Professional Trail on my MBP but dropped it in the trash. Now Safari asks me to locate Acrobat each time I click a PDF link online. I cant find it of course, it simply isnt there. I want to go back to defaults.
Full disclosure: I have Acrobat 8.x Reader over in Windohs XP inside Parallels, and the OS might (might, not sure) see that as the app to open these, but of course that doesn't make any sense that it is going to be able to launch that inside the Safari window (dont want that even if it could, which I hope it cant).
    Thanks.

  • Adobe PDF Viewer and Safari

    I have recently installed CS3.
Now whenever I try to open a PDF on a webpage I just get a error box saying Adobe PDF viewer cant open the file.
How can I revert Safari to open PDF files in Preview again?

How can I revert Safari to open PDF files in Preview again?
You don't need to do that; Safari is perfectly capable of rendering a PDF by itself. You don't need Preview or Adobe Reader.
    To do that again:
    1. Quit Safari if it's running.
    2. Launch Adobe Reader, go to Preferences > Internet and uncheck the box at the top of that window where it says "Display PDFs in browser using:".
    3. Go to /Library/Plug Ins and delete the Adobe PDFviewer Plugin.
    4. Enter the following command in Terminal, press Enter, then quit Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool false
    5. Restart Safari and try dragging a PDF file from your Mac onto an open browser window.

  • Open PDF files from Safari after deleting Acrobat Reader

I can not open PDF files from Safari. I already threw to trash Acdobe Reader and internet plugs in, too. Can anybody help me

I know you said you threw away the internet plug-ins, but you should double-check this since that is a very common cause of the behavior you describe.

  • I can't read PDF fils in Safari after uninstalling Acrobat Reader

A grey screen opens. How can I reset that so I can open PDF files in Safari?

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

I tried uninstalling adobe it but it didn't work, safari doesnt have adobe to open the link, so it crashes or freezes or does nothing! how to Fix this ?!
    Thanks !

    Hi.
Go to Library/Internet Plug-Ins, and trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin
It could also be in User/Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
    Empty the Trash
    Good Luck.

  • How do I restore Adobe Reader as default PDF viewer in Safari

Sometime in the last few days Preview became the default viewer for PDFs in Safari. I prefer Adobe Reader, and up until recently it was the default viewer. Funny thing is I don't think I've made any changes to Preferences or any System updates in that time. I don't see any Preferences in Preview, Safari, or Adobe Reader, which might affect this. The AdobePDFViewer plugins are still in place.
Also strange when I click the open PDF in Preview button, it actually opens in Reader.

Select the icon of a PDF file. Go to File > Get Info (or cmd-I). In the new window, go to Open with and choose in the pulldown menu the application you want to use to open PDF files. Click on Change all... Close the window. Come back here and tell us if this did it.
