PDF vs PP presentation - does it matter?

Did a PDF presentation for an ad agency art director. He's going to flash on-screen or a monitor while giving a talk on marketing. The school says they need PP presentation. Does it really matter if it's PDF or PP? My view is the presentation clicker is just like a mouse. Doesn't know or care what app you're using. This presentation is 100 page ID file that I exported to PDF. Going from vertical to horizontal will require drastic surgery. Anyone know if the app really matters or is someone specifying PP just because that's what they're comfy with? There will be someone sitting at the laptop turning pages while he talks so I can't imagine why it matters if it's PDF or PP.

PDF and PPT files can each do things which the others can't, and the same is true of the software:
- PDFs can include embedded video, Flash, etc. and have no enforced structures for creating new pages (slides).
- PPTs can use video but the file isn't embedded, so you must be careful about distributing it. Slide editing has quite strict rules on fonts, layouts etc.
- PDFs are generally smaller and can use higher-quality graphics (vector art, embedded fonts, etc.)
- PPTs have a larger range of inbuilt options for animation and page transitions (PDF has some support for basic animations, but not many).
- PowerPoint has a 'presenter view' - Acrobat does not (it can show the full-screen view on a secondary monitor, but has no interface for the presenter to refer to)
- PPT slides can have off-slide notes that can be included on the  printed layouts, PDFs cannot.
- PDFs rely on embedded fonts so are rendered the same on any machine, PPTs tend to replace fonts and that can lead to text reflow and alignment problems.
- PPT has a mountain of quick-start features (layouts, themes, etc.) to make a basic presentation very easily, but customizing the slides can be a pain if you don't want to follow the rules.
Note that the basic PgUp/PgDown/arrow navigation works the same in a full-screen PDF and a PPT show, so most presenter remote control "mice" will work, but the advanced versions which allow on-screen drawing etc. tie in to features which are only found on PPT.

  • PDF version of presenter files - where does the attachments icon go?

When I save my Presenter files to the server, I can link in attachments related to the presentation.
    http://breeze.unisa.edu.au/test11-09/
When I save the same files as a pdf - the GUI no longer has a paperclip icon to access the attachments.
Is this a user error, a setting or a bug?
    Many thanks.

Thank you Leo for you response - this looks promising, I can now see the paperclip, but none of the attachments appear- in the test presentation that I provided the unisa link from the server vesion does not appear in the pdf version - but it does in your example, which makes me think it might be a setting.
I tried another from my end which had >10 attachments on the server version

but in the pdf, clicking on the paperclip, there is nothing (attached). Perhaps a setting error?

  • XML in Java: does encoding matter when it's only used for data?

    Hi everybody,
I have a text document that I've converted into XML, and that I read into my Java program. The encoding I have to use to support accented characters, iso-8859-1, doesn't support certain characters, like curly quotes or em dashes. I'm not planning on displaying my XML document on a web page, just to use it as a data format for ease of access. (By the way, to everybody who's mentioned XML to me in the past, I finally realize how cool it is!)
Anyhow, after all that rambling, my question is: since I'm using characters that aren't supported by my encoding set, does it matter that the XML isn't "perfect" and has some characters in it that are technically illegal? Eventually I'm going to read it into a different Java program and just parse it, where I'll need those characters. I sort of got the impression that it didn't matter if you're not planning on displaying the XML on the web.
EDIT: I forgot one thing -- if it doesn't matter, does that mean I wouldn't need to have the "xml version" line at the top of the document?
Any clarification on this would be great!
    Thanks,

You would have to make a cable that will plug into the Nano and serve as an antenna (the headphone cable serves this purpose) and triggers the radio without touching the headphone contact. There are some custom shops that can probably make such a custom jack/cable for you, should not cost you much more than $100 or so USD. But you will still have the problem that the jack you have made will preclude you from docking your Nano with the Anywhere 2.
A much more inexpensive solution would be to buy a cable like this: http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=4572 and connect it to the headphone jack on your Nano and to the audio in jack on the back of the Anywhere 2. The longer the cable the better antenna. You won't be able to charge the Nano while you listen, but you can do that after you are done listening to FM.

  • Our family has multiple apple ids and we are setting up a new apple tv. Does it matter which apple id we use if we have home sharing enabled?

I have an apple id from my mobile me account; I also have the apple id from my itunes account (with which I purchase content for my powerbook); and my husband has an apple id for itunes which he purchases content for his itunes library on his PC.
Does it matter which apple id we use to set up our new apple tv?
what issues are caused by my multiple apple ids?

You cannot merge apple ids, but you can sign out of the apple id and sign in under the other one either on your phone or your mac. On your phone, go to settings, itunes and appstore, tap your apple id, tap sign out, then go back to home screen, then back into itunes an appstore and sign in with the apple id you want to use.

If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer?  Also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

  • OH! ...look, my filenames were changed... does it matter?

Heres something odd i have just noticed...
using dos the contents of my directories "used" to look like this:
    c:\jEdu\JHTP\chptr3>dir
    Ex3_1 (.java file)
    Ex3_1 (.class file)
    Ex3_2
    Ex3_2
    Ex3_3
    Ex3_3
    Ex3_4
    Ex3_4
then using explorer i rearranged my dir names & copied my workinto my
new directory structure...and my filenames were changed...
    c:\jEdu\JHTP\exerc\chptr3>dir
    Ex3_1~1 java
    Ex3_1~1 class
    Ex3_2~1
    Ex3_2~1
    Ex3_3~1
    Ex3_3~1
    Ex3_4~1
    Ex3_4~1
i know that the ~ means that the filename was too long...
but as you can see i have short filenames, i deliberately picked short filenames based on chapter & exercise numbers to explicitly avoid this problem... so what has happened that my filenames in dos have ~ added to them? In explorer they do not show the ~, they show the old names like
    Ex3_2 java file (forte)
...i dont know.. does it matter?
have re-installed jdk & still havin trouble executing applets...
...trying to work out the bug, lets not go over whats wrong with the applet code... did that stuff all last week.

What you're seeing is normal. My 98SE uses a "~" in all .java and .class names (even short ones) when viewing the names in DOS. This is due to the truncation of .java to .jav and .class to .cla.
    Examples:
Long File Name ==> DOS File Name
    AnyLongName.java ==> ANYLON~1.JAV
    OtherLongName.class ==> OTHERL~1.CLA
    Button.java ==> BUTTON~1.JAV
    Actor.class ==> ACTOR~1>CLA
    ABC.java ==> ABC~1.JAV
    A.java ==> A~1.JAV

  • Im using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to the new lion. Does it matter how i do it?

Im using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to the new lion. Does it matter how i do it?

Does your computer meet the requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Recommended process:
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
    Follow instructions for installation.

What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop?  I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files.  I have to immediately move to trash all the duplications on my desktop.  How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)?  Thanks for your help!

What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.
That's all I can think of.

  • Objects in a cube: Does it matter whether selected from ODS or infocatalogu

    Hi,
Objects in a cube: Does it matter whether selected from ODS or infocatalogue?
When creating a cube, you have the option to select the char and key figures directly from ODSes feeding the cube or from the infocatalogue where the objects originally existed.
Does it make a different, which of these 2 places you select the objects from for the cube?
    Thanks

    hi Amanda,
it makes no difference, it doesn't matter.
the ods/infoobject catalog just serve as template where we can choose infoobjects to be included in infocube.
later in bi 7.0, we can directly type in infoobject technical name, like in ODS.
    hope this helps.

  • Does it matter if the lightning cable is plugged in but not connected to an electrical outlet? Will this drain the ipad battery?

Does it matter if the lightning cable is plugged in but not connected to an electrical outlet? Will this drain the ipad battery? We use an ipad cart at school, and some of the teachers will connect all the ipads up to the cart, but then neglect to power up the cart. The laptop with the cart has already had the battery wrecked because of this (within a two month period), and I am concerned the ipads may have an issue if this continues to happen. I need some reassurance before I make the other teachers paranoid!

ok this one is kind in the gray area for me. I say if it is plugged in to a power up cart but not plugged in to a outlet, then all is is doing is not charing, and of course lossing a charge over time in standby, not really causing any issues. User guide and apple sites say it will drain the battery life.
Important: The iPad battery may drain instead of charge if iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, to a USB hub, or to the USB port on a keyboard.
however “Battery life” means the time your iPad will run before it must be recharged.
so I think it will be ok, as long as you charge it as usaul it should be fine.
just use these links for and understanding for batteries and the ipad, of course the user guide.

  • Dynamic Partitions + Aggregation Designs. Est rows. How to handle/does it matter?

    Hi all.
I've created a 'template' partition with an aggregation design in my measure group (the slicer criteria is where OrderDate/100 = null so as to have 0 rows in the partition).
I use the create XMLA from this partition (inc specifying the aggregation design) to dynamically create a new partition using SSIS based on the yyyymm of the incoming facts. This all works fine.
I have some reservations about the metadata that i'm passing as part of the create partition xmla. Do I need to specify accurate Estimated Rows? Are these actually used by the engine similar to the distribution statistics on the db engine?
And what about the est rows in the aggregation design? I cross joined factinternetsales in adventureworks a few times to get 200mil rows to test my dynamic partition creation ETL. But when i look @ the est rows in the agg design it shows 156 (this wouldve
been the orig amount when i built it using the wizard). Does this matter? or do i need to maintain the full rowcount in the aggregation design specification as well? And how do I do it?
    Jakub @ Adelaide, Australia

    bump.
I'm working on something similar again and I never got an answer to this question. Are the est row counts in the partition and aggregation XMLA of any use?
I've also noticed that the aggregation design against my dynamically partitioned measure group shows an estimated performance gain of 0%. Again, does this matter or is it just for informational purposed only
