PDF with Chinese text is unreadable?

Hi,
Ive tried the language packs but they don't help.
We have a chinese client who sends us PDFs with Chinese and English text in them, but the fonts are all messed up? It is unreadable because all the text appears to have really thick bolding, and the characters are spaced too close to each other.
Is this a bug, or am I missing a simple preference setting to fix this?
We have (ashamed to say!) tried opening the PDFs in another PDF reader application (I wont mention names!) and it displays just fine?
HELP!
Thanks
Alan

What I would try in your situation is Adobe Reader 9 with the corresponding font packs.
Uninstall the current reader and all font packs, then download and install the newest reader, with the font packs mentioned in this post http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5b05b

  • Crashing, no 'UNDO' when working with Chinese Text

We have a number of users working in InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on Windows XP SP3. When they enter Chinese text into text boxes, frequently their UNDO command is no longer available. This basically renders files unusable. In addition to this, the application will frequently crash when working with Chinese text. The only workarounds that have sometimes worked include:
    1.       Switching keyboard mapping or just selecting English to see if it affects the Undo function.
    2.       Reset the preferences for InDesign.
    3.       UNDO problem occurred when jumping between web browser and InDesign. Workaround was to select a menu item from within InDesign - any menu item, it didn't matter - and the key command began working again.
Has anybody else run into these problems?

Peter, have you had any problems accessing the web pages for the Release Notes? After finally digging under about 3 layers of redundant links (annoying in and of itself), the final links to Release Notes for InDesign patches 6.0.4, 6.0.5, and 6.0.6 brought me to the following:
InDesign 6.0.4 took me to InCopy 6.0.5
InDesign 6.0.5 took me to InCopy 6.0.6
InDesign 6.0.6 took me to InDesign Server CS5
I got approval to install all patches on a person's computer, but now I can't even read the warnings before doing so!

  • PDFs with hidden text readable in reader, but not acrobat?

For some reason, when I scan documents into adobe acrobat the entire document is unreadable -- its all hidden text.  However, when I open the same scanned document in adobe reader the text is perfectly readable.  I have been receiving numerous pdfs from colleagues which have the same problem - i open them in acrobat, the text is hidden and unreadable, in reader its fine.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  I've been able to play with the scanner settings and have managed to create pdfs without hidden text from the scanner.  The true problem is that I have to print many of the PDFs i recieve -- many of them are quite large. When printing from reader, it takes at least 5 minutes per page.  Any help/suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thanks

(I'm using the latest version of Acrobat, 9)

It would help to look at a sample. Can you post one?
Also, check the "Show Large Images" Page Display preference.

  • Acrobat Pro,with AcroForm, the listbox event.changeEx with Chinese text issue

    Concise problem statement:
We have a PDF built from AcroForm using Acrobat Pro. There is a listbox with text in Chinese. The listbox event.changeEx is not giving proper index, when the text in the list is all in Chinese. The same PDF returns index if all the text in the list is in English.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
1.Create an AcroForm with a list
2.Add Chinese text as items in list
3.Print console on list item selection to print event.changeEx
    Results:Empty result comes
Expected results: index of selected item in list to be printed"

  • PDF with garbled text after editing on a Mac

Hi all, hope someone can help. I'm struggling to get to the bottom of a very bizarre issue. I have a number of PDFs that were originally created using ABBYY's FineReader OCR software. They display fine, and I can "copy" text from the documents to the clipboard with no issues.
However, as soon as I bring them over to the Mac side and make a change to the document using OS X's Preview, things go wrong. As soon as any changes are made, I can no longer copy text from the document to the clipboard - the text that ends up on the clipboard is garbled. However, the display text is still perfectly legiable.
For example. here's a link to a very simple and basic PDF document, that was originally a perfectly fine PDF but became mangled.
    Broken PDF
Using Acrobat I've removed all the graphics and most of the text from the document, leaving just a single text box ("AUTUMN SPECIAL!").
So if I highlight the text on the page which reads:
    AUTUMN SPECIAL!
what ends up on the clipboard is:
    *)﴿*%& (﴾'"!# $
I've done a whole ton of reading about the internals of PDFs and I'm pretty certain that this is something to do with the CMAP character-to-glyph mappings; but I've no idea what to do to fix it. Acrobat's PreFlight check for the PDF/A 2a standard tells me:
"Text cannot be mapped to Unicode"
"Type 2 CID font: CIDToGIDMap invalid or missing"
Also, an inventory report (available here) shows the letter "A" being mapped to a space, letter "C" to a exclamation mark etc - all obviously wrong. However, "Analyze and Fix" won't fix the problem
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I know it's definitely a bug somewhere on the Mac side and the obvious answer would be to avoid editing documents using OS X Preview, but unfortunately I have several hundred documents in this state. Is there any way to fix the mapping, or otherwise return the text to a state where it can be accurately copied from the document?
Thanks very much in advance for any help or advice given.

I doubt you could fix this. Generally a "garbled" file is considered unusable for copying, and that's that. If a PDF uses random mappings instead of standard ones it looks fine on screen, but text extraction is impossible.
Short of converting every page to bitmap and OCRing again.

  • Changing a PDF with a text box, and then flatten the text box onto the underlying PDF before sending the document out.

I download PDF documents from municipalities, often and from numerous municipalities.
They have a scanned image of a form that I need to fill out,
I enter my contact info as a text box onto the form, along with other information,
but when I save the document, there seems no way to flatten the fields so that the person I send the document to has a true PDF and cannot change the document.
They could delete one of the text boxes or change the text in the box (by mistake),
which could case some major complications.
How do I flatten the document, so I can send it back to the municipalities as a PDF that cannot be changed.
I am using Acrobat X Pro, on windows XP machine

  • Acrobat produces a PDF with bold text redacted

Printing a Crystal Report from a Citrix server to Acrobat Pro XI on a Windows 7 desktop. Bold text in the report is redacted (black box).
If I print the same report from my Windows 7 desktop to Acrobat Pro XI then the bold text appears as it should.

I checked the font used in the Crystal reports (there are hundreds of reports) - the reports use Arial Unicode MS Regular (ARIALUNI.TTF) and the Font embeddability = Editable (whatever that means). The same font is used for bold and normal text - the normal text is fine but the bold text is redacted or blacked out.
At this point I'm out of my area of expertise.
I confirmed with my client that they are using pdfFactory and it works well using the same reports - go figure.

  • Trouble exporting pdf with Arabic text to .doc file

I am having an issue exporting a pdf from the trial of Acrobat Pro XI on a Windows 7 computer.
The pdf has a table with English fields in the left column and Arabic equivalents in the right column.
It appears to display fine within Acrobat, so I assume it has fonts embedded and that Acrobat is somehow handling the display of the Arabic font correctly.
I need to export this to .doc or .docx so that I can enter additional data.
When I convert to .doc, the English column and fields convert pretty good, but the Arabic fields do not display well at all. I am not sure if this is some sort of trouble with Word (or the Windows OS) requiring an Arabic font or Arabic text support to be installed on the system or if there is some other issue (such as Acrobat not handling the conversion well)??.
I did note that there is an Arabic Font add on to Acrobat that can be downloaded from Here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4885&fileID=4558
However, since Acrobat is seeming to properly display the Arabic text, I don't know that this is required...additionally when I tried to install the Arabic font support from that URL, it told me that Acrobat X was require, I am using Acrobat XI reader (installed with the trial version of Acrobat pro that I wish to purchase if I can get this working properly).
Thanks in advance for any assistance or advice offered on this subject.

Unfortunately our conversion engine cannot convert text, such as Arabic, which reads from right to left.  It maybe something that we add in the future however it is not available at this time.

  • Problem On Editing a Smartform in PDF with Chinese

    Hello,
we are using SRM and in  a specific transaction we are generating a SAP message wich is editing a form for the PO.
When we want to edit it on SRM in chinese we have problem with a lot of  ### ans everything wich doesn't mean anything.
To generate the form we are using  function 'CONVERT_OTF'.
No idea of what to do.
    Thanks for help

    Hi Eileen,
Since you want to create a chinese PDF form, which font types are you using in the styles? If you are not using CNSONG, please try this font.
If this still does not work, then you will be needing to install true type fonts supported by adobe through SE73 and use those fonts in the smartstyles.
    Hope this helps you

  • PDF with white text, or not?

OK, so I have and PDF file with some white text according to my own programm, and it seems to be set to overprinting.
I have asked about this subject before, but failed to make myself clear enough. This question will be more clear, at least I hope.
This is the file in question: http://www.4shared.com/document/Sn7nSydh/error_detected.html
In  that file the Adobe PreFlight is NOT detecting white text that is set to overprint, but my own code does...
And this file the Adobe PreFlight and my own code agree, there is white text that is set to overprint: http://www.4shared.com/document/S9-3F59t/GWG_test_file.html
So now for my question. Were am I going wrong? I think I must seek the error in the colors. So we have two colors when puting out text in a PDF; stroking and non-stroking. When the stroking is set to CMYK(0, 0, 0, 0) and the non-stroking is set to CMYK(0,0,0,1) then we really have white text, and when the Graphic State op (overprint) is set to True, the text is set to overprint...
When the stroking is set to CMYK(0,0,0,0) and the non-stroking is set to somthing like CMYK(0.1, 0.4, 0.5, 0.9) the text is not white, so we are done checking??
I you can bare with me one this one. Thanks!

You are correct that each object can have two colors - a stroking color and a fill color - but the only color(s) that are relevant are the one(s) needed by the specific drawing operators.  If you set the stroke color to be something in RGB (for example) and the fill in CMYK, and just fill the object, then RGB is never used and wouldn't be found by a check.  Same is true for things like white overprint.  The text in that PDF is filled and not stroked, so the stroke color isn't relevant.
In addition, for that file, I don't see OP being set to true at any point related to the text.

  • Opening PDF with chinese characters. Some characters change

I need to open a 4 page PDF that was originally created in word in Simplified Chinese.  But when I open the PDF in Illustrator with Simplified Chinese open, some of the characters change.  My client in the past has had success outlining the chinese before she sends.  But it is no longer working for some reason.  How can I match what I see on the PDF without having to convert it to a rastered image.?

Might not be working this time because the font is different. Calibri for example in english is one that does tno go over becasue of some unicode issue and you get boxes instead.
In any case you can in Acrobat  >> file >> save as > more options >> encapsulated Postscipt. Open the .eps in illustaror and your font should be outlined, and correct.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Standard is displaying some PDFs with garbled text. Help, please.

I've been using Adobe Acrobat X Standard without any issues for a long while.  The other day, I received a PDF, opened it, and the words are garbled.  My co-worker who has the very same software is able to view the document without all the garbage.  I have gone to distiller in an attempt to fix.  No one from IT can seem to fix the problem and I am at my wits end.  I've lost lots of sleep over this.  I was even upgraded to Adobe Acrobat XI and still can review the document but again.  Everyone else can.  Don't mean to go on and on but, I really need the experts out there to assist me with this issue.
I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.  Thank you.

Not sure what you're referring to. Is this "URL" part of the page content or are you viewing PDFs in a browser? A screenshot would help.

  • Exporting to PDF with Chinese Extension b characters

    Post Author: sparrow186
    CA Forum: Exporting
When viewing the report in Crystal Reports Designer (Preview Tab), the chinese characters extension b can be displayed correctlybut when exporting thru File -> Export -> PDF those characters are no longer included in the exported PDF. im using Mingliu Font (TTF). is this a bug?  or im just lacking any additional setting for this. Also tried in JRC same problem (installed asian font packs so that it would be displayed correctly) though those characters are displayed as ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Doray,
For printing in PDF other than english characters we have to create new font .
Go to SE73 and create new font family Named ZCOUR_I6 and then execute the report RSTXPDF2 where in select the optin for activity to be performed as READ and SAVE the font file.
From control panel for to fonts and copy the COURIER NEW (TrueTYpe) font on to ur desktop .
Upload the the same font file using RSTXPDF2 by specifying it in the file name.
Then try to execute the tcode which u r usingh for converting the output to PDF and check whether the desired output has been converted.
Hope things are little clear for you.

  • Cannot print PDF with selectable text from Chrome

    Hi All
Fairly recently (since the last chrome update?) I cannot select text in my PDFs printed from Chrome (on my windows 7 machine).
Previously, I had discovered the workaround (print using printer dialog) that is outlined here Google Chrome | Cannot select text in PDF but that solution no longer works, however.  Now, even if I follow that method, zooming in shows that the text has been converted to outline and the text cannot be selected OR searched for within windows.
Doing the same print from Internet Explorer yields the expected result - selectable, searchable text.
This may well be a Chrome issue... but considering it makes the above workaround invalid I figured it should be reported. Perhaps Adobe has a big enough voice to get Googles attention.
It's such a massive pain - all PDFs I've created in the last couple of weeks are useless.
    Help?
    Thanks, Glenn

Agreed.. it is raised there also (Google Groups)... although  there are multiple posts on the matter being ignored so I'm not overly optimistic.
I just figured if Adobe cared enough above the issue to write that (now incorrect) help page Google Chrome | Cannot select text in PDF then they (and others) may care to know that particular solution is no longer working.
The only thing that seems to work is Google's own "Save as PDF"... which seems to support your point, unfortunately.

  • Pdfs with small text in the upper left margin

When creating pdfs using X from Windows 2010, little bits of text get removed from the page, reduced to very mininscule text, and thrown up into the left upper margin of the page. Why does that happen? How do you stop it from happening?

In LR Prferences try unchecking 'Use Graphics Processor.'
If that works next try upgrading your graphics drivers via AMD, Intel, or Nvida webste for your graphics adapter model.
