PDF with form fields & restricted permissions

I have a PDF file that is an illustrated monthly calendar. It was designed in Xara Designer, saved as a PDF through PrimoPDF and then brought into Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 were text fields were added.  Additionally, the permissions on the PDF have been restricted (password security) so that no one can import the file into Illustrator, Photoshop (or the like). I need to prevent people from extracting or altering the illustrations.
Here's the issue...
I sell these calendars in digital format and PC/windows users have no problem adding text to the form fields using Adobe Reader.  Even desktop Mac users can do it using Adobe Reader for Mac.
HOWEVER, the text fields do not work on Adobe Reader for iPad!  The calendar pdf file opens, you can actually SEE the text fields (blueish color), but you can't click in a text box and start typing.
I've done some testing and when the PDF file does not have permissions restricted it works just fine.
But I must have permissions restricted to protect the integrity and copyright of my illustrations, while still allowing users the ability to add typed text into the preformatted text boxes on the calendar.
Any workaround? Any ideas why it doesn't work on iPad??

Currently, Adobe Reader for iOS doesn't support form filling in any protected documents.

  • My PDFs with form fields get "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." on anothers computer, PC and MAC

Im creating PDFs through InDesign and using Acrobat Pro 9 to add fields.  I save them to allow ADobe Reader people to use them.  Everything works fine on Pro and Reader on my end with a PC as well as someone elses PC.  But one person using Mac said some forms work and some dont.  Those that dont get the error "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."  Ive resaved them and made sure they work and same problem.  There is nothing overly coplex about the PDFs either, a date field at the most.  They are using Reader 9.1.
I found out the other day that one person who can open them adds info to them saves them and send over to that other person and cannot open any of them after they have been edited, same error.  He even tried on a PC and still gets it.
I dont know what to do.  I know it has to be on his end and not mine.  What else can I suggest to him??

It sounds like they are using an earlier version of Acrobat or Reader, though you said Reader 9.1. If you add some features in AA9 that are new, it appears that earlier versions see the new features as damaged files. At least that is my guess. Try using Reduce File Size or PDF Optimize to save to an earlier version and see if that helps. The other option is that you are getting them messed up in e-mail because many client look at PDF files as ascii and do not encrypt them. In that case force the encryption. You can also send them in ZIP form.

  • User can't access a PDF with Forms

On a website, we have a main menu PDF with a list of bookmarks linking to individual user manual PDFs.  When a user tries to access a user manual  PDF with forms in it, they get the error "There was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading this document (118)." The user dosen't appear to have any problem opening a PDF that doesn't contain forms.
The user is using Reader 10.1.3 and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.19328.  This user cannot access the PDFs with forms when given a direct link to the file either. However, if the user is sent the PDF file they can open it with Reader and in their browser.  I'm stumped.  Does any body know what's going on here?

Is there a browser setting that can affect if a PDF opens? Something in security, perhaps? I've looked around and don't see anything obvious that could allow/disallow opening a PDF file that contains form fields.

  • Can I create a PDF with form controls using JAVA?

I have a web site running on linux (Ubuntu). I'm programming in Java. Presently I use open office to create PDFs with form controls (checkboxes, lists and text fields). I'd like to be able to create in my program (Java) with form controls. JasperReports is not good because I don't see a way to create form controls. Help!!!

I am not sure what this has to do with the Acrobat SDK, as we don't have a version of SDK for Linux (or Java).

  • Shown PDF loses Form Fields

    Hi
Perhaps someone could please help me
I have a PDF that is built from 3 seperate PDF's into 1.   Each PDF has form fields that are filled with data by my software, then the resulting PDF is saved to a temporary PDF.   When I load that PDF into Adobe Reader, the first page is displayed fine, but pages 2 onwards lose all form field values.   However, when I load this PDF into other PDF Viewing software, the PDF looks perfect.
Can anyone perhaps help with anyideas
    Thanks

My guess is that the problem is not the filling but the combining. Combining PDF files containing forms requires special processing, and your software is not doing it. If you consult ISO 32000-1 you will see that form fields need to be included in two places: the Annots dictionary for the page they appear on, and all together in ther per-document AcroForms dictionary.
In your example the AcroForms dictionary contains only the fields from the first page; when other PDFs were added their AcroForm was simply ignored. We now have two pages with form fields which don't conform to spec, so it isn't surprising that there are differences among software. Acrobat has the most sophisticated form handling, and it may be the most sensitive to errors.

  • Combining various PDF files with forms fields: How To?

    Hi people.
I have a problem with my Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and some PDFs.
Each file has a lot of form fields and they has the same name. When I try to combine allowed files in acrobat, the "combinator" throw a message adverting me that the fields are the same and will have the same content. The only posibility is to create a "PDF Folder". But I need to distribute a simple PDF file compatible with Acrobat Reader (and the most usual issue is ... Acrobat Reader 6). So...
Is there any possibility to create a single file from a PDF folder?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your quickly answer but... if this is the only way... then I have a very very very serious problem.
I have 45 PDF individual files (with two pages each one) and I need to generate a single file with my 45 files (90 pages). Each file has more than 30 fields...
    What should I do?
    Thanks!

  • Optimize a PDF doc with form fields

    Hi All,
I have completed a PDF with multiple form fields (about 70). It's only one 8.5 x 11 page. It is 2.2 mB large. I've tried different ways of Optimizer but it always removes the input field functionality.
How can I decrease file size while maintaining the integrity of the form? Thank you so much in advance. PDF attached.
    Dina

Generally, the only thing that I remove after creating a pdf file with forms that doesn't effect the fields is to remove embedded fonts. It would be best to to all of the other optimizations before creating the form fields.
That's nice you say, but I've got the form fields already. Try reducing the size (as you have already done), then replace the page in the file with the form fields with the one whose size you have reduced. The form fields should stay. I don't know what happens to the size of the new file, let us know?

  • I/O error opening a pdf file with form fields, using itextsharp

    Hi,
I'm using itextsharp PDFStamper to set the form fields in a pdf file. It works on my computer properly, but on the QA site and other developer's machine it only shows the values of the form fields, the original text does not show, and it gives the error message "An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly". Please does any one know what's causing this error and how to fix it?.
    Thanks,
    Uyi

I recommend you try tech support for the iTextSharp product (I believe
there is a mailing list). This forum is for questions about
understanding the PDF Specifications. You could try an Acrobat forum,
but I think the first option has a better chance of success.

  • Publicly sharing PDF's with form fields, tags and bookmars.

I'm looking to be able to share a PDF document so that my coworkers are able to acces this document. I'm very aware of various ways to share the PDF, via email or Google Docs, but I need some sort of hosting that will support form fields, tags and bookmarks. It would be very beneficial if everyone would be able to access the PDF after 'sharing' and viewing on a URL. But, I really need them to be able to search and navigate easily through the bookmarks and buttons. We need this shared via internet because sharing the PDF document itself to each individual employe's computer, runs the risk of slowing computers down. Is there anything I can use, some sort of hosting site or program similar to Google Docs that will support these features?

Note The Adobe PDFviewer requires that users to use Safari or Webkit based Browsers only.
All gecko based browsers will not work. Adobe made conscious decision when OSX came out Not support gecko based browsers.
So if you have any of the following Gecko based Browsers you have to use another plugin.
SeaMonkey (equivelent to the Communicator All-in-one)
    FireFox
    Camino
    OmniWeb
    Opera and others.
You have to use a Plugin from a fellow named Schubert of Germany, called PDFBrowser Plugin
It supports all Browsers except Internet Explorer. Makes no difference whether gecko or webkit based. The plugin author is banned by Adobe from putting in forms support.
And using Apple's Preview will absolute corrupt a PDF Form making it unusable if opened in Reader or Acrobat after being viewed and saved in Preview.

  • Adobe Reader freezes all browsers when opening a url to a PDF containing form fields...

There is an issue we are currently experienceing with Adobe Acrobat 9 (updated to the latest version) where ALL BROWSERS (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) on each of two different systems (a MacBook Pro with Mac OSX Leopard and a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows Vista) where the application will freeze up and crash the browser when we view a .pdf file from a url if the .pdf file iteself contains form fields.
At first I though it may have been specific to Mac OSX and this MacBook we were trying to view the document on, but the same issue is now occuring with a new Sony Vaio laptop (running Windows Vista) as well.
It seems like it is able to open .pdf documents containing form fields when they are stored locally, but when trying to access them via a url, the program will freeze up.  Sometimes it will eventually work if you had previously opened a .pdf prior to opening it via the url link and sometimes it doesn't.  And it seems to only be related to .pdfs containing fillable form fields (others open fine when accessing them by a url)
Obviously it's become quite irratating and I'm hopeing I can find some insight on this support forum as to what may be causing this issue.
Previous versions of Acrobat (installed on the MacBook) opened this very same .pdf file (url) fine before upgrading to version 9.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Hallo all,
I have this problem: i create a PDF DOC with some fields that can be filled (like name, address, and so on).
Well, when i have finished filling the fields and I have also signed the DOC ( very good feature) I want to save or almost Send it by mail.
The DOC is correctly sent...BUT I RECEIVE A DOC NOT FILLED, WITHOUT ALL THE DATA and the SIGNATURE!
    Were is my mistake?
    Thanks for your help
    Ciao

Some forms do not display correctly in the Desktop Reader if field highlighting is enabled. This is something we're actively working on, but you might try disabling field highlights by clicking on the button in the purple bar at the top of the Document in the Desktop Reader to see if that helps.
Can you please share the file? You can email it to [email protected] This way we can get a better idea what is happening.
    Thanks!

  • Can I retain PDF created form fields if importing back to indesign?

    Hello,
    First time forum user here.
I have been trying to create an active form that would work as an internal approval form for any design job created in Indesign. I saw in other posts here that it is not possible to create this in Indesign so I designed my form in Indesign, created PDF & set up form fields within that Arobat file.
I now want to imprt this back into Indesign whilst maintaining the field functionality with the intention of it becoming a Library item.
Is this possible & what is the direction I would take to achieve this? I am not familiar with XML (which is what I tried but didn't understand what I had created).
    Hope you can help,
    Mel

    Thanks Peter,
It was a bit of a long shot - I was trying to cheat the system somewhat but yes, your response is exactly what I have been coming up with.
What a great function this could be though for Design Studios everywhere and more - Design Checklists/Client Approvals/Printers Notes that can be modified to auto-fill as per set fields. Can sit it in the slug and it would be a great reference point for any stage of the job (well that's my studio/production manager head talking - nice neat documentation... LOVE IT!
Guess I will have to rely on Acrobat to get me through.
    Appreciate your time.
