PDF with strangely placed items

Hellos!
I have a problem with my PDF files ... I am working on this book file of 530 something pages and whenever i created pdfs of the book, text frames will either be missing in places, or they will appear in places they are not actually in, but when i look at my original indesign file, everything is in place? anyone ever had this problem of funny alien objects just appearing in your pdf files? please help? I need to hand this over to the printers soon, and i can hardly have these aliens in my file like you can see in the image attached, the text frame with tel, mobile fax etc in the bottom right corner is supposed to sit where the phone number is ... very odd ...
thanks a lot in advance! hope you guys can help me out of this misery.

Thanks Eugene!
Another question though ... my file is an InDesign book file consisting of 16 chapters, if I export to IDML this will only work with the single chapter files, right? not with the book file. I have done my index in a seperate chapter within this bookfile with 850 some references, will all that get lost when i export my single chapters to IDML and create a new book with those exported IDML files?
sorry .. this is my first ever book project .. and from the way it's going ... i reckon it will be my last. such headaches ...

  • CS3: Missing Hyperlinks in IDCS3 When exporting to PDF with a placed PDF that has hyperlinks

    Hello,
Does ID supports exporting hyperlinks from a file that has a placed PDF that already has hyperlinks?
Cause after exporting all the hyperlinks of the place pdf disappeared.
    thank you

    Importing PDF pages
Using the Place command, you can specify which pages you want to import from a multipage PDF: You can place a single page, a range of pages, or all pages. Multipage PDF files let designers combine illustrations for a publication into a single file.
The page range options appear when you select Show Import Options in the Place dialog box. The dialog box includes a preview, so you can view a thumbnail of the pages before you place them. As you place each page, InDesign reloads the graphics icon with the next page, letting you place the pages one after the next.
i InDesign doesnt import movies, sound, links, or buttons when you place a PDF file.

  • Problems exporting to PDF with AI placed files

I have a 24 page document with placed illustrator files. When I go to export to PDF it takes hours to export. When I change all the placed images to JPG it exports fine. Anyone know why this is happening. I thought the whole point of the newer versions of InDesign was you were able to use native Adobe files.
What are the best file types to place in InDesign?

If would help to know versions and OS. ALWAYS tell us the version(s) of program(s) you are using, what OS, and the version of that OS. Some people overdo it with model and  speed of CPU, RAM, video card, monitor size, hard drive space, make and model of car, and shoe size. Don’t need any of that crap.

  • Export pdf with visibility control

ik have a pdf with layers placed as an object in my CS5.5 document
now i want to export pdf's with control over the visability of the layers of that pdf-object
i can set the visability but, exporting gives 1 failure
    how can i solve this

then there is something in your document which might be causing the issue...
try and isolate the problem by hiding the layers first ,
ex:- you have 2 layers then hide one and check bu making pdf , if it works then the issue is in that layer which is hidden
once you wll find the layer you can locate the object on the layer causing this issue.
and Is it possible to share the file ....

Reader doesn’t create pdf files. You can use Acrobat (ask in that forum) to create pdfs. You can subscribe to the Adobe PDF Pack which has a create pdf functionality (please ask in that forum), or you can use a third party utility such as ghostscript, cutepdf, or Microsoft’s own PDF creation capability. For third party pdf creation you will need to ask in a forum dedicated to that software as fellow users of Reader are unlikely to have the knowledge to help.

  • Placing a PDF with ICC profile embedded

If I place a PDF with a ICC profile embedded, InDesign doesn't take in consideration it.
In the case that the Indd colour workspace is different from the ICC embedded in the PDF, when I export to PDF the color conversion is wrong.
For example the PDF embedded ICC profile is US webcoated (Swop), the Indd workspace is Iso Coated L39 v2 and I want export to PDF with conversion to PSO lwc improved,
the conversion that I get is wrong. With an image with the ICC pofile embedded the conversion is ok.
does anyone know how it works?

With regards to placing PDF/X files in either InDesign or Illustrator ...
Neither InDesign nor Illustrator currently do anything whatsoever with the Output Intent ICC profile in a PDF/X file. It is totally ignored. In PDF/X-1a files, there is no other color mangement and as such, all objects are either DeviceCMYK or DeviceGray or spot colors. The objects are imported as CMYK or spot color values assuming the document's default CMYK color space. Thus, if you place a PDF/X-1a file with a profile for Gracol and your InDesign document's default color space is US Web Coated SWOP, those CMYK colors in the PDF/X-1a will be brought in as-is but interpreted as is they were US Web Coated SWOP.
The picture becomes a bit more complex for PDF/X-4. All untagged CMYK objects in a PDF/X-4 file are assumed to have the color space of the embedded Output Intent ICC profile. CMYK content in PDF/X-4 that uses a CMYK color space must be explicitly tagged as such and have an embedded profile for such color spaces. Ironically, all CMYK content that matches the color space of the Output Intent ICC profile must be specified as DeviceCMYK per the PDF/X-4 specification (there is a long story about why that is the case). When PDF/X-4 is placed in InDesign or Illustrator, similar to the case of PDF/X-1a, the Output Intent ICC profile is indeed ignored and DeviceCMYK colors assume the document's default CMYK color space. All explictly tagged with ICC profile CMYK and RGB objects in PDF/X-4 maintain such tagging when placed within an InDesign or Illustrator document and are either preserved on PDF export/save or converted based on the PDF export/save options specified.
Is this a problem? Yes, I believe so. I am in the process of looking at what can be done to improve the PDF/X placement capability in the future so that this problem is ameliorated.

  • Placed PDF with Layers - can layers be maintained and exported in a new PDF?

Can a layered PDF placed in InDesign include these layers in the InDesign Layers Panel? I have a layered PDF created in Illustrator CS4. I'm placing it in InDesign CS4 6.0.4 and want to export a PDF with the layers in tact from Illy. I use the Show Import Options dialog box and can see all of the layers in the layers tab. I tried both options for update links so that choice seems unimportant. I only see one layer, Layer 1, in the InDesign layers panel after placing the PDF. I was expecting to see all of the layers from the placed PDF. I exported as Acrobat 6 with Create Acrobat Layers checked but the only layer in the exported PDF is Layer 1. I searched and read for quite some time and can’t figure it out. Maybe I’m expecting something that isn’t possible but it sounds like it should be. I tried placing it as a native AI file with the same results. Where am I going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Glenn

Thanks to Bob and Peter. I understand what you said. It seems as though the ability to place a file with layers should allow you to take advantage of it better. This is a map that will allow users to turn on or off various points of interest, hotels, etc. Now I realize I can at least control them from the place dialog box so, other than having to place the same map multiple times I end up with what I wanted. Thanks for the soultions.

  • Indesign crashes when exporting to pdf with .eps and .ai files placed

    Hi everyone,
I have an Indesign file with 4 placed Illustrator .eps file placed. Whenever I try to export to pdf, it starts to export and then when it reaches a page with a .eps file on it, it hovers for a minute and then Indesign crashes. I decided to save these 4 .eps files as .ai files and replace them. Now when I export to pdf, it gets through the export and a pdf file is created but immediately after, Indesign crashes.
Is this a sign of corrupt .eps or .ai files or a corrupt Indesign file? All I know is that if I remove all the image files, then the ID file is fine, ie. it exports and ID doesn't crash.
Is there a way to test either .eps, .ai or Indesign files for corruption, and if they are corrupt is it possible to repair them?
    Appreciate any help offered.

You haven't said which version of Indesign you are using or other specs, but I would bet that you are using CS2 on an Intel Mac. CS2 runs under Rosetta on an Intel Mac, and I have found that memory problems are often the result of crashes like the ones you have described. My advice is to stay away from EPS files and use AI or PSD, especially if the file is a bitmap or photo. This has eliminated all the crashes that used to occur on my system. As far as the crashes after making PDF files, I don't have a solution other than restarting Indesign after exporting a PDF file or two at a time. The same Rosetta memory problem seems to mess it up for me. Mine would just exit from Indesign with no warning. Hope this helps.

  • Placed PDF (with embedded fonts) reports fonts not available!

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me why Illustrator CS (I know it's old) should report Fonts missing when the PDF I have placed has definately got the fonts embedded.
The PDF was made in InDesign CS4 using the default [High Quality Print] setting. If I look at the properties of the created PDF it lists all the fonts as being embedded subsets.
I know I can get around this by outlining the text but I shouldn't have to.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

So, Illustrator will always require the fonts present and will disregard any embedded fonts?
That's pretty much it. Remember: Illustrator is not a PDF viewing program. It wants to let you edit the document. PDF is essentially a document exchange format and not really intended for editable content (beyond the extent Acrobat enables). Font designers want you to buy their products if you're going to be doing anything other than reading the text.
The link-place-flatten trick is good to have in your bag of tricks, but I am not alone in recommending you do not blindly outline all type. Aside from making it nearly impossible for an output service provider to make a possibly necessary last-minute correction, you will not get the proper hinting with very small type. Moreover, if you're dealing with a large amount of text, you'll end up with huge files.

  • Creating a .pdf with different page views

I'm tyring to create a .pdf with different page views.  For example as the viewer goes through the .pdf some pages I would like viewed as "single page view" and others "two page view".  Is this possible?   I'm working with Adobe Acrobate Pro.  Thanks for any suggestions.

It's possible to use the Page Open actions to trigger a view mode change but it's messy - if the user tries to override them because they prefer to zoom in, etc. then they'll get very annoyed when things keep resetting.
To create a Page Open action, open the thumbnails panel, right-click on a page, choose Page Properties, then the Actions tab. You can use the Execute a Menu Item tool to fire one of the view modes.

RoboHelp can successfully create a PDF of a single topic. It can create a PDF with Review > Create PDF for Review.  It can successfully create a doc from this project, and Word is able to save that doc as a pdf.
RH can open the projects that it created but cannot open the sample projects. The sample directories are read-only and I cannot reset them. I do not know why.
I uninstalled RH and reinstalled it. The problem is still occurring.
I am baffled. I am an inexperienced RH user so the problem might be a simple one. I would be grateful for any advice.
    Best wishes,
    Juliette Curtis

I was also facing this issue and got the same error.  After much trial and error I found the following solution. So sharing that here. ( I am not sure whether this works for all the use cases. But in my case it worked. I am using Windows 7, RH11, and MS Office 2010.)
Open any Office application. (I opened Word)
Open File > Options > Add-Ins. (You will be able to manage your add-ins from this tab. When I browsed through the list I found the "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM" Addin was with the list of  "Disabled Application Add-Ins")
Select "Disabled items" from the Manage list. (This list is available at the bottom of the Add-Ins tab)
Click Go. The Disable Items window is displayed.
Select "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" from the list.
    Click Enable.
Click Close. The  "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" is moved to the list of "Active Application Addins".
    Close MS word.
Now when you generate the Printed Documentation output from RH11, the error mentioned in the query is not appearing and a PDF output is generated.
    Hope this solution will help.

  • Print PDF with special print options of Canon IR printer

    Hi,
We have a collection (db driven) of PDF documents that we want to send to our network printers. Some document need a hole punch of some other specific printeroptions of a Canon IR printer.
The ideal solutions is a windows application where i could define virtual printers with their print options (pdf and printer specific).
    Eg:
A user creates in a the windows app a virtual printer with name and print options
    - FastPunch: Printer IR5570 with hole punch
    - Fast: Printer IR5570
    - Color: IR C4080
    - ColorBooklet: IR C4080 with booklet options
When the app starts its batch it will look at de db and find rows with an PDF and the name of a virtual printer. The documents are printed with specific printer preferences.
Does someone has experience with such an solution? Tips?
Someone wants to make this in vb.net (or c#)? What cost?
    gtx, Pierre

I have downloaded the Acrobat SDK but I haven't really waded through the documentation or samples yet. I've only been working on this project for about 3 days now and not full time. This isn't the highest priority at work. I've worked a bit with the adobe reader control and that looks like it has some promise.
    I have two significant problems:
    1) I don't want the user to see any windows appear other than my console application. That way I have it working right now, Acrobat is required and appears minimized while the file is spooled and then is closed after spooling completes. Not so horrible but I'd like to get away from it if possible. To print the file right now I'm using the startprocess module or something (new version of shell I think). I'm starting the pdf with the verb "Printto" and that tells Acrobat to print to a printer that I specify.
2)Biggest problem. I have no reliable way to change the number of copies or any other print settings. I am not willing to write a program that spools a single copy multiple times just to get multiple copies. Currently my program uses rundll to open a printer preferences dialog, and SendKeys to modify the print settings. This means that the computer cannot be used while automated printing is occurring.
Right now the program's only saving grace is that it allows the user to be ignorant of the job settings so that all the user has to do is indicate an item number and quantity and walk away (hoping nothing changes the focus and derails SendKeys - but we know that kind of thing never happens in XP :P )

Thanks, I'm typing this message from an external keyboard borrowed from one of my schools iMac. It is working fine so could this be a serious hardware issue? I upgraded the RAM from 4 gb to 16 gb thinking that would solve the slowness/beachball issue but it didn't. Could it possibly be a faulty SATA cable or time to upgrade my hard drive as well?
I'm feeling like this is beyond my reach and do not want to damage my MBP further. I'll shut it down and take it to the tech store on campus and hope they have mercy on my wallet. Thanks for the help.

  • Is it possible to create a PDF with different colors for screen and printing?

I'm working on a document that features light colored text on a dark background. I'll be sending this document as a PDF to someone who will likely want to print it. Is it possible to set up the document such that it will display this way when viewed on screen, but will print as black text on a white background, without requiring any special action on the part of the recipient?
Printing a color separation of just the text color produces exactly the results I'm after, but I can't ask the recipient to do that. I need it to happen automatically any time it's printed.
I've tried setting up a duplicate text layer in black and placing it under the background layer, then setting the background layer and colored text to 'never print'. This works within Acrobat Pro, but not when I print the same document from Preview.
Is there an acrobat equivalent of a CSS print stylesheet?
    Thanks.

Create the document in layers with the background on a seperate layer than the text. Export the PDF with"Create Acrobat Layers" selected (it will need to be at least version 1.5).
Open the PDF in Acrobat, choose the background layer then Options>Properties>Initial State and under "print" choose "Never prints".
