PDF won't print in Preview but OK with Adobe Reader

Periodically (and rarely) I run into a problem where an application yields a PDF for printing, is submitted to the print queue of my Laserwriter 16/600 PS, and instead of printing, the following message pops up briefly before the job is wiped out:
the process "cgpdftops" terminated unexpectedly on signal 6
The same problem occurs if I choose to preview the output first, in which case the job is submitted by Preview, and that yields the same result.  However, I open the same PDF document using Adobe Reader, it prints fine.
Any thoughts?

On the Print dialog under Page Sizing & Handling, did you try Fit or Shrink oversized pages?

  • AcroPDF ActiveX print functions are not working with Adobe Reader 9.2 / Actobat Reader 9.3

AcroPDF ActiveX print functions are not working with Reader 9.2/9.3. Tried ActiveX print functions like printPages(), printAll(), printWithDialog(), none of them is working. Tried on platforms: XP 32 bit and Win7 32 bit. These print functions all work fine with Adobe Reader 9.1.0. or 8.2.0 or 8.1.0 on XP 32 bit or Win7 32 bit.
The way I have my setup: I have created a C/C++ project with AcroPDF MFC ActiveX classes. I have created an AcroPDF object in there, and then calling it's LoadFile() function passing a pdf file in the parameter. Then calling the printPages() or printAll() function. With Adobe Reader 9.1.0. or 8.2.0 or 8.1.0, printing is starting through the default printer without any problem. As soon as I update the reader version to 9.2 or more, the same code stops working.
Is anybody noticing any similar issue? Any info on this will be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Unfortunately printWithDialog() is also not working. Actually none of the print functions like Print(), printWithDialog(), printPages(), printPagesFit(), printAll(), printAllFit() are working. All of them works fine though with older reader.
BTW, what security related changes are there for printPages() and printAll()? Can you please elaborate on that? Is there any workaround?

  • Links to other PDF's broke in Preview but work with Adobe

I have a users manual for my car that is made up of a PDF for each section of the manual. In Adobe and Preview, I can open any PDF, click on the different sections in that particular table of contents and go to that page in the PDF. Preview, however, doesn't go to the MAIN table of contents, which is in a different PDF. Anyone know if Preview can link to other PDF's and not just itself? It works fine with Adobe, but not Preview.
    Thanks

    Dual 1.25 GHz FW800 (Watercooled and OC'd to 1.42)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Macbook C2D 2.0

I find I'm having the same problem, but not just with links to other PDFs. ALL links are non-functioning.
The original document was created in Word, but all the links should work properly. I'm even unable to click on links wherein the text for the link is "http://example.address.com/page.htm"
Considering we've got a district full of Macs, and the default program is Preview ( which is also so much faster to load) It would really be nice if these links worked.

  • PDF opens and works correctly with Windows 8 Reader, but not with Adobe Reader.  Why?

    Hi,
My sister-in-law has this PDF order form from one of her company's distributors that opens and allows editing of specific fields.
The only application that opens the file correctly (visually and functionally) is the Windows 8 Reader.  If I open the file in Adobe Reader or with the Mac viewer things do not line up, fonts are too large, and when editing fields sometimes symbols show up and sometimes way over-sized numbers show up.
This behavior has been observed on both a Windows 8.1 PC as well as on a Mac Book Air.
Can someone please tell me why this is happening?  Is there something that needs to be configured differently?
    Thanks,
    Matt

This is what I see when I open that PDF in Adobe Reader 11.0.07:
Can you tell me which parts are not correct?  Obviously the Submit button is a bit strange.

I need the forms to work in Readder as well.

    What kinds of links?

    Problem:
After migration to Adobe Reader 11.0.06 our users are complain about long printingtimes with PDF documents.
    What i have done:
Test printing two different documents from local storage an network (dfs, nfs) - notice the printingtime in our environment depends not on used storage!

Any ideas to make printing faster on WindowsServer 2008R2 with Adobe Reader?
Next step is testing the old version from reader on 2008R2 but on security aspects is this not the way...
    Thx

    Hi Pat,
    thx for your answer :-)

  • PDF won't print properly - some letters squeezed together

Using a Mac and Reader 9 and two different laser printers (Canon and Brother). PDF won’t print text properly. Some letters are jammed / squeezed together. Last week I used Mac’s Preview Program / App to bypass the PDF print menu to get it to print the PDF properly but no luck today. How to fix?

Printing as an image fixed the letter-jamming thing, thanks Michael. A new problem though.
This is a 16 page booklet printed on 8.5x11. Each page is set at 5.5x8.5. I have made two PDF files:
    1) 16 individual pages 5.5x8.5 in portrait mode and
    2) 8 pages 8.5x11 in landscape mode with one page of the booklet on each half of the page (properly formatted to create a 16 page booklet).
The problem in using either one of these files are these:
    1) When I use the 16 individual page file and make a booklet under the print menu, it shrinks the combined pages to less than 8.5x11.
    2) When I try to print the 8 page file of an already formatted booklet, the image is the right size but the back of each sheet is printed upside-down.
How do I fix either one of these problems, preferably both? All suggestions welcome.

  • Adobe PDF won't print non-working time colour in MS Project

Adobe PDF won't print the colour chosen for non-working times in MS Project.  I have tried changing the colour, changing the style, moving non-working time in front of tasks and have fiddled with the printer properties, all to no avail.  It ignores whatever style I have for non-working time and makes a blank space, although it will take gridline changes . . . . please help!

Thank you for providing the suggestion and the Cleanup tools, however they did not help.
I ran each version of the cleanup tool, and for each I had it clean up Reader and Acrobat (i.e. 4 separate cleanup operations).  I then rebooted the machine, and installed Reader 11.0.3.
Still had the same behavior:  Reader will not print.  I tried printing to a second printer (that is attached via USB)...and it did not work either.  I also tried printing to a Cute PDF Writer print driver...and that did not work either.  In each case, no print data made it to the Windows print queue (as demonstrated by watching the queue while printing.)  No error was raised, but no print data was transmitted.
I then uninstalled Reader 11.0.3, rebooted, and re-installed Reader 9:  printing works fine now.
There is definitely something in Reader 10 and Reader 11 that breaks printing in some environments.    (As you alluded to...I have seen a number of postings online about printing problems in Reader.)
    More details about my environment:
    Windows 7 Professional N (Version 6.1, Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

Two virtual CPUs (each: Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 2673 Mhz, 1 core, 1 Logicial Processor)
    Hardware Abstraction Layer:  6.1.7601.17514
RAM:  3096 (allocated to virtual machine)
    Bridged networking
    VMware host:

    18 Gig RAM
    Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @2.67 GHz

  • PDFs won't print (Lion and HP laserjet 1300)

I just upgraded to Lion and pdfs won't print. It doesn't appear to be the printer driver, because the printer works with others apps. Any suggestions? It's an HP Laserjet 1300. Yes, it's old, but still works, well, sometimes. just not with pdfs.

    Hi Andreais,
I found some useful tips on the HP forum as well. Maybe it is helpful in your case as well: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/HPDesignjet-130NR-no-long er-prints-PDF-properly/m-p/768507/highlight/true#M18877

  • PDFs won't print on new HP printer

I recently added a HP CM1415fnw printer in my office and I cannot print any PDF documents. Word and Excel print fine. Why?

Happily, Windows 7 is in and everything seems to work fine. I have to
navigate around my desktop a bit differently, but everything seems to be
compatible. I especially have to work now with printing Word docs to PDF.
    I'll get there...

  • Hello Apple community... I am trying to combine multiple pdf's into one, using preview, but when I drag the additional pages they show up as separate documents.

I am trying to combine multiple pdf's into one, using preview, but when I drag the additional pages they show up as separate documents.  When I drag the doc in a line would show up in the past, and if I went above th eline all was good.  It doesn't have a line, and no matter what I try I am having no success.
    Please help!

According to an Apple Support article, unless there are unforeseen issues
in file ownership or permissions, the combining of .PDFs should be simple.
•OS X: Combining PDF documents using Preview - Apple Support
There are a few variable and similar methods, some change with version
of OS X in use; some vintage OS X may vary a little in the process...
A variety of similar topics appear in search results, with terms:
" mac os x combine pdf into one " such as this page shows...
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=mac%20os%20x%20combine%20pdf%20into%20one
If the system is older than Mavericks there may be other methods to try.
Suggestions are among linked results in the search. I see a few fair ones.
•Here's another that offers generally similar suggestions...*  this info looks OK, extra links, do not:

  • Pdfs print fine with preview, not at all with adobe reader

this is a relatively new issue that popped up sometime in the last month or so. when i try to print any pdf document with adobe reader, to my HP laserjet P1505, i get the following error:
    /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
if i open up the same document with preview, it prints fine. i updated my printer software, and reinstalled adobe reader with no change. what gives?

here's what popped up in that log just now when the print failed:

  • InDesign doc exported to PDF won't print

I'm experiencing issues with an exported PDF from InDesign. More specifically, when I export the InDesign doc to a PDF and try to print, I don't have any issues, nor does anyone else in my office, however some of the people that I'm sending the document to are experiencing trouble printing it. They get to 44% flattened and then the printing process slows down, and then once it reaches 50% they get a pop-up window saying that the document can't print and the whole thing stops. They can print the first page by just selecting that page, however the second page cannot be printed this way. I have re-exported the PDF several times and these folks having the issues have cleared their browser cache, re-downloaded the document, saved it to their desktop before opening, and tried renaming the document as well.
What's going on here, and what can I do or tell them to do to fix this?
Also, updating their Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat does not solve the problem.

Hi, I was just wondering if you got the problem resolved. I'm asking because we are experiencing kind of the same issue in our office. Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd. We would appreciate if you could share your solution if you were able to fix the issue. Thanks!!

    Hey there @pepsitruck
I understand you cannot print from your desktop however, you can print from your laptop.
Could you please run the Print and Scan Doctor again and let me know the results or post a screen image of the results?
This diagnostic tool will check for any conflicts that could be causing the issue. The tool will show you a report at the end. If there was a problem that the tool could not fix, you will notice it in the results.
You can also try manually stopping and restarting the print spooler and try printing from Notepad afterwards.
    1. Click Start
    2. Type "Services" in the search field.
    3. Open SERVICES
    4. At the bottom, click "Extended View"
    5. Search for Print Spooler
    6. Right-click it and choose Properties
    7. Select as Automatic in the drop down box, close the Window
    8. Right click on Print Spooler and choose "Stop", wait until it stops and then right click again and "Start".
    9. Close out of Services and try your print again.
When you get to your response, please include which version of Windows you're running please.
Which Windows Operating System am I running?
    Thank you,
