PDF Workflow and XMP

We use PDF's both in digital output as well as in preparation for our offset platemaker. Our profile for offset platemaking output is an older profile, needed for compatibility with the imposition program and often has issues with transparency by creating white PDF boxes. Could you provide me with a better understanding of XMP? Does XMP allow you to reassign profiles to be more advanced versions, or is the best way to define a PDF with the proper settings to simply take the native file and re-export a PDF with the appropriate settings?

    Should this be so ?

  • Export PDF Workflow with Applescript and CS3

    Hello,
    I am setting up some PDF workflow with Applescript.
    On a given moment, as my script runs and after getting some user-input answers to questions in some dialogs, my script tells InDesign CS3 to open the Export Adobe PDF window for the current document. I copied and pasted that small part of the script:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    tell document 1
    export format PDF type to "Macintosh_HD:Test01.pdf" using "somePreset" with showing options
    end tell
    end tell
    When you run this small part of my Applescript, InDesign opens the Export Adobe PDF window (as expected) waiting for me to click on "Export". That is exactly what I want, since the user is given here a last opportunity to change some values (for example page range, or spreads). When all is set, the user can click on Export to close the dialog and finish the script.
    Problem: I was hoping that the Adobe PDF Preset "somePreset" would be selected in the first pull-down menu of the Export Adobe PDF window when this window is opened by the script. Unfortunately the last used preset is always selected by default. Anyone suggestions or help?
    Kind regards,
    Bertus Bolknak.

    My operators enter the page range and filename into a dialog box. Then I set those in the script. I use the Press Quality preset to start with and then set the changes I want into a export variable. I set things like bleed, marks, page range, etc.
    Here is an example:
    set theProps to properties of PDF export preset "[Press Quality]"
    try
    delete PDF export preset "Schmidt PDF"
    end try
    set theStyle to {name:"Schmidt PDF", acrobat compatibility:acrobat 7, bleed top:"0.125i", bleed bottom:"0.125i", bleed inside:"0.125i", bleed outside:"0.125i", page marks offset:"0.125i", include ICC profiles:Include None, effective PDF destination profile:use no profile, effective PDF X profile:"No Color Conversion"} & theProps
    make PDF export preset with properties theStyle
    set properties of PDF export preferences to theStyle
    set color bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
    set grayscale bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
    set page range of PDF export preferences to (item i of myPageList) as string
    export document 1 format PDF type to (PrinergyFolder & myJobNumFinal & "_" & VerCode & ".pdf") as Unicode text without showing options
    I am also doing this in Quark.

  • Convert XSTRING to PDF Format and Send it as an attachment with work-item

    I have an Adobe Form data available in the ECC system in XSTRING format. In one of my ABAP methods (used by a custom workflow task), i want to convert the XSTRING data in PDF format and send it as an attachment with a work-item. How best can this be done?
    Appreciate any ideas,
    Saurabh

    Hi Saurabh,
    if u want to download pdf which is in xstring format to u r local system
    u can try the following code.
    data: data_tab type table of x255.
    call function 'SCMS_XSTRING_TO_BINARY'
    exporting
    buffer = XString data
    tables
    binary_tab = data_tab.
    cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download(
    exporting
    filename = filename
    filetype = 'BIN'
    changing
    data_tab = data_tab ).
    cl_gui_frontend_services=>execute(
    exporting
    document = filename ).

  • Bugs in PDF workflow/ Quartz Filters?

    I've  noticed several issues with PDF workflows in Lion that seem to have gone wrong. Whether deliberately or not, I don't know.
    1. If you Export a PDF from Preview with a Quartz Filter, that filter is not applied to the copy of the PDF in Preview's window, though the file on disk does get the filter applied. If you close and reload the PDF, the effects of filter will be displayed.
    2. If you create a new Quartz Filter in ColorSync Utility, it doesn't work.
    Even duplicating an existing system filter, like "Gray Tone", doesn't work when you apply it to a PDF document in ColorSync Utility.
    3. If you do have any user quartz filters, they don't show up in Preview's Export file dialog, unless you copy them from ~/Library/Filters to ~/Library/PDF Services.
    There are several webpages about this.
    4. Save As PDF-X has disappeared from the PDF button of the print menu.
    I have seen other webpages that mention this.
    All these issues are on both of my Macs, so I don't think it's a local problem, though I would be grateful for any confirmation.

    Thanks Benwiggy for that tip.
    I am still running Snow Leopard due to things dropped in Lion.
    I needed fax capability before I could move to Lion.
    I was also waiting for the bugs to get worked out because I will lose some time when changing over.
    I still have the menu item with Snow Leopard but the work flow for PDF-X is now broken as well.
    I have not always had Acrobat pro.
    I am famialure with inserting, extracting, and typing information on PDF documents as one would need to do in an office.
    I had always used preview and the PDF-X "save as" feature to embed fonts.
    I see there is a save as format to  "PDF/X" in Acrobat Pro v9.0.
    There is a settings button next to the save as box.
    It has four different settings or flavors of PDF/x:
    PDF/X-1a
    PDF/X-3
    PDF/X-4
    PDF/X-4p.
    Then there is a conversion box that allows input of a "conversion profile".
    There there is a viewing or printing condition box as well.
    As you can see I don't work with colors much.  It is all about preserving the text and images in a document as everything is usually black and white or grey scale.
    What setting for PDF/X would you suggest if "font" embedding was an issue and it was desirable to preserve the text and images as they were, without regard to color correcton.
    Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • PDF workflow : pre-press preparations in Illustrator interfere  :  Suggestions?

    Our packaging graphics group adopted a PDF workflow which has eliminated the clutter common of art file submissions. However, one print provider must preform additional preparations to the artwork, inserting supplier insignia and adding special press markings in addition to the customary trim marks and such. These final pre-press preparations are performed in Illustrator. Consequently, Illustrator ignores our PDF's embedded fonts. Unless the supplier has the same fonts installed, the PDF won't output accurately when it's saved/distilled again.
    Any suggestions on how to retain a PDF workflow when pre-press preparations involve adding content?

    You might look at inserting these objects as a watermark in PDF format?
    Your choice is slightly limited with Acrobat but Enfocus Pitstop might
    help? You can create a page mark action which will detect the trim box
    and then append custom information outside for the pre-press
    requirements ...

  • Synchronizing IPTC/IIM and XMP metadata in JPEG images

    Excerpt of "IPTC Core Implementation Guidelines", section 2.2.1 available on http://www.iptc.org/IPTC4XMP/:
    The basic functionality of this synchronising mechanism [between IPTC/IIM metadata in IRB and XMP metadata] is:
    - To move metadata from the IRB to a new XMP packet in case an image file is opened with such an IRB but without an XMP packet. If the file is saved both the IRB and the XMP packet will be stored to the header section of this file.
    - To move metadata from the XMP packet to a new IRB in case an image file is opened with an XMP packet but without an IRB. If the file is saved both the IRB and the XMP packet will be stored to the header section of this file.
    - To update the metadata values of the IRB respectively the XMP packet from the newer source to the older destination. Which set is newer or older is detected by a hash value over each block of metadata. (More detailed information is available from Adobes XMP web pages at www.adobe.com/xmp and in the software development kits.)
    I have checked for Adobe XMP web site and searched in "XMP Specification, January 2004" and I have not found explanations about this "hash value over each block of metadata" mechanism.
    Moreover, it seems that it does not work regarding to the following simple experiment:
    - 1. add metadata to a JPEG image using Photoshop CS (which adds both IPTC/IIM data in IRB and data in XMP)
    - 2. edit these metadata using an "IPTC/IIM-only and non-XMP-aware" editor like IrfanView, XNView or any other one
    - 3. go back to Photoshop CS which displays the "old" XMP metadata ignoring changes done previously using the IPTC-only editor.
    Of course this experiment works using an "XMP-aware" editor like iView Media Pro or PixVue in step 2.
    So it seems very easy to get images with IPTC/IIM and XMP metadata not synchronized when the image workflow uses different programs to edit metadata.
    Am I missing or misunderstanding something ?
    I have found a radical method stripping XMP metadata (in a step 2 bis...) using David Crowell's JStrip, see
    http://davidcrowell.com/jStrip.aspx
    Do you know any other best method to keep IPTC/IIM and XPM data synchronized when an image workflow uses different metadata editors and some of them are not XMP-aware ?

    How can I take my pdf book and revert it to indesign so I can make a few changes on it?

    Kasyan Servetsky wrote:
    As far as I know, the best approach is to place pdf-file into a new InDesign document with “Multi Page Importer” script. Then create a new layer above the layer with PDFs and make small edits there creating new objects – text frames, etc – and hiding the original parts in the PDF below.
    That isn't an option - the obscured content will often still export and it'll completely mess up accessibility and compliance.
    The only true option would be to export a Word file from the PDF (using Acrobat Pro), import the text into a brand new INDD document using the usual style-mapping workflows, then export the images from the PDF separately and place them all back into the layout. Quicker than typing it all in again, but only just. Consider it a learning curve.

  • PdfA1b -  Subject Mismatch between Document Info and XMP metadata

    As far as I can tell, when generating PdfA-1b files I am completely compliant with the spec. Yet when I try to preflight verify my output I get the following error: "Subject mismatch between Document Info and XMP metadata".

    You have a disconnect with regard to how Document Info fields are to be mapped to XMP Dublin Core (dc) data fields:
    - Document Info Subject -> dc:description
    [nobody claims this is intuitive, but it is indeed specified reasonably well]]
    The following is not required in your case, but for your info I include it anyway:
    - Document Info Keywords -> dc:subject
    Your best source for this is the actual PDF/A-1 standard (ISO 19005-1, can be purchased form www.iso.org).
    A very good companion for such type of topics are the TechNotes from the PDF/A Competence Center (see www.pdfa.org), downloadable free of charge.

  • Automator/PDF Workflow to create 11x17 pages?

    Is there any existing Automator action or PDF workflow to print a standard Pages or Word doc, or 8.5x11 PDF, to an 11x17 workflow? I have a newsletter I've created using Word 2008 that is in the standard letter-size format. I can print it to PDF using the built-in PDF workflow, but what I would like to do is print it as a booklet using 11x17 paper folded in half. Basically, page 4 and 1 on one side, and 2 and 3 on the other. Right now the only option I know of is to save each page as an image and then use Pixelmator to save the images side-by-side in two 11x17 canvasses, and then use Preview to merge them into one PDF file to send to a printing company, but am sure there has to be an easier way. I would pay $20-50 just to get an Automator action or PDF workflow to do this step for me. Does such exist?

    Wow! Thanks so much. I even have that workflow and never thought about it's usefulness for doing that with 8.5x11 pages. I use it all the time for 5.5x8.5 pages but for some reason never thought about this use for it. Awesome!

  • Automator Watermark PDF Workflow

    Seems with every major upgrade, Apple breaks the Automator Watermark PDF Workflow.
    Can someone test this workflow in Yosemite so I know if the problem I'm having is with OS X 10.10.

    Hello
    Under 10.6.8, Watermark PDF Documents.action/Contents/Resources/tool.py works happily without any errors when invoked as follows with a.pdf and watermark.png in ~/desktop/test/ :
    #!/bin/bash
    py='/System/Library/Automator/Watermark PDF Documents.action/Contents/Resources/tool.py'
    cd ~/desktop/test || exit
    args=(
        --input     a.pdf
        --output    a_wm.pdf
        --verbose
        --over
        --xOffset   0.0
        --yOffset   -150.0
        --angle     300.0
        --scale     0.3
        --opacity   0.1
        watermark.png
    "$py" "${args[@]}"
    If the said error – ValueError: depythonifying 'pointer', got 'str' – is raised at the line:
    provider = CGDataProviderCreateWithFilename(imagePath)
    I'd think it is because imagePath is not a C string pointer which the function expects but a CFStringRef or something which is implicitly converted from python string. Since I don't get this error with pyobjc 2.2b3 & python 2.6 under 10.6.8, it is caused by something introduced in later versions.
    Anyway, the statement in question may be replaced with the following statements if it helps:
    url = CFURLCreateFromFileSystemRepresentation(kCFAllocatorDefault, imagePath, len(imagePath), False)
    provider = CGDataProviderCreateWithURL(url)
    I modified the tool.py with these changes along with other minor fixes and run it successfully under 10.6.8. I'm not sure at all whether it works under later OSes as well. And even if it does, editing tool.py will require the Automator action to be re-codesigned.
    Here's the revised tool.py.
    #!/usr/bin/python

  • Hyperlinks do not work when exporting to PDF (Crystal and Visual Cut)

    I have a question about Crystal Reports XI Release 2 and Visual Cut 11. I create reports in Crystal and export them using Visual Cut. Some reports contain hyperlinks to files on a network drive. However, the links only work while in Crystal. The PDF files that are printed through Visual Cut display the links, but they are not clickable. How can this issue be fixed?
    In case it helps, the links also work when I export reports from Crystal to HTML, Word, and Excel, but not when I export to Acrobat. I believe it is a problem with tagging/accessibilityfeatures. So is there a setting/formula in Crystal or Visual Cut that would allow the exported PDF files to be accessible?

    While Crystal exports to pdf indeed lose hyperlink functionality (both in Crystal as well as in Visual CUT), Visual CUT allows you to use Crystal formulas (acting as hidden Tags) to create hyperlinks in the resulting pdf file. Another option supported by Visual CUT it to automatically detect file references in the pdf text and turn them into hyperlinks.  Contact MilletSoftware for more detail.

  • Report for outstanding workflows and the agents responsible

    I need a report that shows all leave request workflows , with userid who created them and approver (agent), and approver's org unit and personnel number.
    is there a standard SAP report that can show that? or I need to develop one?
    I was looking at the SWI2_FREQ, this report shows the leave request workflows and userid who created them, but it does not report on the agent.

    Hi
    I think by making use of SAP_WAPI_WORKITEMS_TO_OBJECTS you can get all the workitems who created the leave wokritems.
