PDFing Spot Colour Transparencies from Indesign CS2

Hello!,
I think this is a common question, but I can't find a definitive answer. I am trying to PDF a file which has an image and then a spot colour transparency over part of it. When I PDF the file at Press Quality the spot colour transparency is white. When I PDF the file at a lower resolution (Standard size PDF) the transparency is fine.
Is there some way I can resolve this? I need to prepare a Press Quality File. I seem to recall reading or hearing somewhere that Indesign does not deal with spot colour transparency very well. I am currently working in CS2, and am wondering if the issue has been resolved in newer versions of Indesign.
Many thanks for your help, all,
Pepi

> that Indesign does not deal with spot colour transparency very well
Nonsense.
Just turn on Overprint Preview in Acrobat.

I'm a Mac Illustrator CS3 user and having trouble copying text from InDesign CS2 to Illustrator CS3.
After copy text from InDesign (allowed), I'll go to Illustrator to paste it, but none of the text appear. I'm not sure if there any other step should I take before paste?

  • Failure to fully export pdf from InDesign CS2 (application unexpectedly quits)

I found a TechNote detailing such an issue when you save or export a PDF after the Adobe application has been left idle for several days. However, when I tried both suggested solutions, I was unable to fix the problem. Some say it may be that I have a corrupt file, but the file saves normally and shows no signs of error.
When I try to export a file as a PDF file from InDesign CS2, I don't get an error message when I save the file. I only receive an error message when I try to open the resulting PDF file which has not been fully processed.
The error message I see is as follows:
    * Exporting a PDF file from InDesign CS2: The file appears to save without error, but when I open the file with Acrobat I see the error "Acrobat could not open '[file name]' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF."
Thus, I tried solution 1: upgrading my Mac to Mac OS X v10.5. That didn't work.
Then I tried solution 2: save the file, and then restart the application. That also did not work.
The TechNote goes into further detail, explaining:
"When you save or export PDF files from Photoshop CS2, Acrobat 7, Illustrator CS2, or InDesign CS2, the application must reference the TemporaryItems file located in /tmp/501. Prior to Mac OS X.v10.4, Mac OS X regularly deleted files in the /tmp folder that had not been used or modified within a certain period (approximately two or three days). If an Adobe application is running but unused for several days, Mac OS X prior to version v10.4, would delete the TemporaryItems file. When you save or export a file as PDF, the Adobe application attempts to reference the no-longer existing TemporaryItems file which results in errors or faulty PDF creation.
When you restarting the Adobe application and then save or export a PDF, the application rebuilds the TemporaryItems file."
Does anyone have any other suggestions for a solution to my query?

Similar to you, I've just posted the following in the InDesign section:
Problems writing pdf from InDesign CS2
Hello everyone, I've just gone and bought myself a new 2.4ghz iMac and done all of the updates for Tiger so I'm now running 10.4.11. InDesign CS2 is version 4.0.5.
I have a simple A4 document with 3 placed images which is an updated version of many done previously. I've never had any trouble writing pdf's from them before until tonight on my new Mac. It seems to get about half way through and InDesign quits.
If I print to a pdf file then it's okay, but a bit long winded when you get used to exporting from InDesign.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Saving Backwards from Indesign CS2 to CS?

Initially, I recieved an Indesign file from CS4 that I couldn't open with my Indesign CS. With much frustration, researching and contacting SEVERAL people with different versions, I am left with the same file (now in .inx) that someone can open in CS2, but still not CS!  Does anyone have Indesign CS2 that can help me and downgrade this file, so I can finally view it!!! Thank you and I greatly appreciate feedback!!!
    Amy

Normally, I'd be the first to volunteer, but I don't actually have CS2 installed on the machine at the moment. I'm sure someone else will be along shortly, though.
In the meantime, you need to understand that what you see is likely to only be a vague imitation of what was created in CS4. Many of the features of CS4 will not be supported, so things like line styles or GREP styles will be lost completely, and you can count on some text wrapping differently from line to line becasue the text engines have also been upgraded significantly. If you can live with that, great, but sending it back to be opened again in CS4 is going to do the same re-wrap stuff if the file is edited. This is not a great way to collaborate.
Also, now is the time to seriously consider upgrading. You are still eligible for upgrade pricing to CS4, but you won't be for CS5, and it will cost a lot more money to upgrade then.

  • Printing graphics from InDesign CS2 to an HP 4000 PS Laserjet

My HP 4000 Laserjet will not print InDesign CS2 documents that have pictures, other graphics, or objects created in InDesign with either a drop shadow or feathered.
I have an HP Laserjet 4000 which I previously used with Pagemaker 6.5. I could set the screen lpi and angle values for exactly as it needed to be using the Acrobat Distiller PPD and print documents (with pictures and graphics) to the post script printer with no problem. Now I am using Adobe InDesign CS2 and I don't seem to have same the printing options and control that I had with Pagemaker. But mainly, in Pagemaker, when I printed a document I could select the HP 4000 PS printer in the Print Document box and it listed Acrobat Distiller in the PPD box which is what I used.
Now with InDesign CS2, when I select the HP 4000 PS printer it only shows the HP 4000 PS series ppd (and this may be correct). Although I can still set the values for screening (lpi) and screen angles and screened objects that are created in InDesign will print to whatever screen values I selected, the document will not print when pictures and other graphics are placed into the document or if an object created in InDesign has a drop shadow or is feathered. When I remove the graphics and drop shadow, it will print, however, another problem is that it will not print certain fonts properly (leaving out certain letters in certain words - for instance the "l" in "floor".)
Is this a compatibility issue between this older Laserjet and InDesign -- is there another driver that I need -- or am I overlooking something that's obvious? I'd appreciate someone's help who may know what the problem is so I won't be doing the trial and error thing.
    Thanks,
    Cliff Stone

Thanks everyone for their input. As far as the memory shortage, I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I can create a document in Pagemaker of only 200KB that prints fine and the convert the same document to ID and it fails to print.
I think Dov is right about the 4000 because I remember when the printer was new, there were some incompatibility issues with Pagemaker that I had to work around. The Adobe people told me back then that Pagemaker and HP postscript printers didn't get along very well.
I'll check with HP again (I've already written to them twice with no response) and see if the firmware upgrade Dov mentioned is still available, however, even though this 4000 has been very durable and a real workhorse for me, it may be time to put it out to pasture and invest in a new Postscript laserjet.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • Colour Management from Indesign

How do I colour manage from IDesign to improve my laser copier output accuracy?

First, you need an accurate color profile for the printer ( and laser printers basically need recalibrating every day for really accurate color -- they're sensitve to things like temperature and humididy, and color can change thoughout the day, or even during a long print run), and then you need to turn off color management in the printer control panel, and finally, specify the correct output profile as the destination in the print dialog.

  • Placed PDFs don't print correct size from InDesign CS2

I am using CS2 stuff on Mac OS (leopard) with Epson RX680 printer. It's a large document with several placed files. Two are PFD files (color) that print too large. Looks fine on the screen but the printed document looks like it's trying to tile. (Page is divided into four sections with large section of file printed into each.) These placed files print fine from Acrobat and PhotoShop. Also, the document has several placed PDFs that print great. Help. Am on deadline.

Thanks a bunch. Long story short, I printed from Acrobat in high res,
scanned it in high res to TIFF and used it that way. What a pain!
What a crime. It may look good on screen and even off your desktop printer, but you've now rasterized everything and captured the printer dots from your printer, which should reproduce quite nicely on an imagesetter.
The answer to this kind of problem is never to rasterize the PDF, but to find out what's wrong with the print driver or printer, but if you're going to take a shortcut, the least you should do is open the PDF in Photoshop at 600 ppi or (preferably) higher and save as a psd or tiff. Scanning is a waste of time and will only degrade things more. If the PDF is choking the printer, odds are pretty good a bitmap image with enough resolution to preserve some semblance of the vector data is going to do it too, by the way.

  • How can I get all of my images to appear when exporting from InDesign (CS2) to a pdf?

Many of my images are disappearing when I try to convert them. I had this same problem last year, but I would just replace the picture (which was a huge pain because there are 24 images per page) and then eventually after a few attempts they would all show up. Any ideas what the problem is?

OS = Operating System for your computer (and the version of the operatiing system, please, like Windows 7 x-64 or Mac OS X 10.8.3).
Patch level is which updates you have installed for your version of ID. CS6 is version 8, and the latest patch is 8.0.1. If you don't know, once you tell us the OS we can tell you how to find out.
Preview mode is accessed from a button at the bottom of the Toolbox, from the View menu, or by pressing W when the text tool is not active. It makes the pasteboard disappear, along with non-printing objects.

  • InDesign converting legacy spot colours

    Hi there,
I have been supplied a pdf that contains the spot colour Pantone Yellow C. The PDF properties says that it was created in InDesign CC and I have no reason to doubt this. For our own internal prepress  workflow I need to bring the PDF back into InDesign CC and make another PDF. When I do this the spot colour appears in InDesign swatches palette as a Lab Spot colour. Now I know this is down to the introduction of Pantone+ libraries since CS6 but I do not want to print the spot colour, I want to convert it to CMYK. The Pantone Plus book states that this colour should have the breakdown 0%C 1%M 100%Y 0%K however InDesign CC converts this colour to 2%C 9%M 100%Y 0%K which is quite a difference and gives quite a brown tinge through our ISO proofing device. I then forced the PDF open in Illustrator CC and the swatch appears as a CMYK Spot with the correct pantone breakdown. So my first question is why if Illustrator and InDesign CC are using the same Pantone+ libraries do they both interpret the colour differently?
Hopefully you're still with me on this as it has been melting my brain. My next test was to place the supplied PDF into InDesign CS4, when I did this the spot colour came in as a CMYK spot with the correct breakdown. So my last test was to create a new CS4 document and add the swatch colour to my document. I then opened that document in CC and what do you know it preserved the colour as a CMYK spot.
The nature of our business means that we have to bring supplied PDFs back into CC to produce a new PDF but my concern is that will now be incorrectly converting spot colours to the wrong values.
I know you may say go back to the client and ask them to convert the colour but this is not always practical and we may receive multiple PDFs from different design agencies.
If you have any input/solution I would greatly appreciate your feedback.
    Many Thanks,
    Nik

    Hi Rob,
that InDesign document is great. I've just knocked up a quick script to get the values and write them to a csv file. The reason I want a csv file is so I can embed this in my script and just use grep to find a colour and get it's cmyk values.
set cmykSpotFile to POSIX path of ((path to desktop as string) & "Spot_to_CMYK.csv")
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
set spot_list to every color of active document whose model is spot
      repeat with thisSpot in spot_list
set colourName to name of thisSpot
set colourValues to color value of thisSpot
      my updateList(colourValues, colourName, cmykSpotFile)
      end repeat
    end tell
    on updateList(colourValues, colourName, cmykSpotFile)
set the beginning of colourValues to colourName
      set recordString to ""
      repeat with thisItem in colourValues
set recordString to recordString & thisItem & ","
      end repeat
set recordString to text 1 thru -2 of recordString
do shell script "echo " & quoted form of recordString & " >> " & quoted form of cmykSpotFile
    end updateList
    Many Thanks,

  • Acrobat 7, Leopard InDesign CS2, printing but with poor results

I know there are issues with Leopard and Acrobat, I'm just trying to see if my problem falls into that category or if it is something else.
I am running Leopard 10.5.1 on a MacBook Pro with CS2. In general, I am able to print with my PDF printer and get good results from several programs but NOT from InDesign (CS2, 4.0.5). I've got a two page document with lots of small text and graphics, which used to print just beautiful as a PDF (for my students to download from a course website). Now, however, the fonts in the PDF have terrible resolution and look awful! But, I can still generate beautiful PDFs with terrific looking fonts from Mellel (a word processing program I use for Hebrew). This is using the same settings in Distiller and in my Adobe PDF printer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Karyn

  • The difference of pdf export from Indesign CS3 and other Indesign version

    Hi,
When I am exporting pdf of an Illustrator eps file from Indesign CS2 or CS4 etc.. i am getting the proper output as its there in illustrator, but when I am loading the same Image in CS3 and exporting pdf its not producing the proper output. Here I have my screen shots.
    Cs3
    other versions
    awaiting your reply
    Thanks in advance
    Biju Mathew.

You have to educate your customer: EPS is an outdated and lossy file type because it does neither support transparency nor color management and should be avoided to be used with InDesign or Photoshop or Illustrator.
I don't understand, why so many insist in using EPS?

  • Import InDesign CS2 Interchange format into CS5

I have a lot of InDesign CS2 templates and documents. Since it is not possible to open them directly in InDesign CS5, I have used Interchange format from InDesign CS2 and everything worked beautifully.
But there is a problem. Every text frame from InDesign CS2 Interchange file opened in InDesign CS5, has some info at bottom right corner that consists of a value like 56W (width) and number of characters that are present in the text frame, along with column count (if present) and count of characters that are overflowing.
Interchange format from CS3 InDesign does not do that. There is no way to create and display those info with text frame created in CS5. If text frame from CS2 Interchange format is converted to picture frame, and back to text frame, that info is also gone.
I personally find very useful that info displayed at bottom right corner of text frame from CS2 file (except "w" value that does not change even when text frame is resized).
How can this info be displayed on every text frame created in InDesign CS5 ?

Indeed files from InDesign CS2 can be opened directly in CS5 ... there is something wrong with files from CS2 ... I suspect on one of installed plug-ins, so lets back to the interesting case of bug "Interchangable CS2 file format in CS5".
This "problem" can be replicated allways:
    1) Create document in InDesign CS2
    2) create 2 text frames with some text
    3) export document as InDesign CS2 Interchangable format
    4) open that file in InDesign CS5 and you will get bottom corner info from screenshot.
I would really like to see option to enable this "bug" in CS5 since it makes Info panel redundant in case of text frames.
I guess that value in front of "W" is some sort of width value ... I calculated and came up with 1W~3.25mm ... W Value is rounded (integer) value so some variations are noticable.
C stands for nuber of text columns.
first number in brackets is value of characters in text frame with spaces that is displayed. second is number of characters that are overflowed.
posted ID_CS2.jpg iz zip file actually. just change extension to zip. there are 2 files. one INDD from CS2 and one INX. just save link as .zip (Save target as).

  • Why does my r200 print pics dark in InDesign CS2?

I'm having problems printing pictures from Indesign Cs2 from my G4 powerbook (10.4.11) to an Epson R200.  The images are way too dark.  The original photos come from an old Nikon 3 megapixel point & shoot camera.  I don't know much about settings such as sRGB, or even the difference between RGB vs CYMK, but I'm pretty sure it's probably one of these printer profiles or color profiles that's causing the problem.  What should settings be?
By the way, the exact same images print fine to an Epson c60 and an HP Officejet j5750; it's just the r200 that is giving me issues.  Are there any suggestions (aside from tossing the r200 in the trash)?

It looks to me like xc6120pstops is crashing and dumping core. Or maybe the issue is with pictwpstops . If I switch over to the "Generic" PostScript printer everything works just fine (but I loose duplexing). And no problems printing from other applications, at least yet.
Has anyone else seen a similar problem?

I seem to be having the same problem with my Xerox Phaser 6120 although it is not application specific. xc6120pstops crashes even if I just print a test page. Generic postscript printer works fine. I've managed to set the printer default to use the duplexer via the web interface, but I'd still rather have full access to the driver.
The Crashreporter log (which oddly reports that xc6120pstops is PPC even though it should be Intel) indeed shows a crash, but I don't know how to interpret any of the detailed information:
