PDFs always download rather than open from a browser

Since upgrading to Leopard the behavior of opening PDF files has changed and I cannot figure out how to reverse it. Before, opening a PDF in Safari or Firefox would download the file then open it automatically. I can't remember, but it may have given me both a choice to download or to open. Now I just get a download option. So I save it somewhere, then have to open it. Can anyone help me with how I can get back to opening PDFs directly when they are attached in Safari or Firefox? My default for PDFs is already set to Preview.

I don't use Safari much. I'm using FireFox, now in version 3 Release Candidate 1. It's working perfectly for me.
I'm using a Add-On named *PDF Download*. It's available thru the FireFox extensions site or here: http://www.pdfdownload.org/
It's giving me full control of PDF viewing/downloading and lets me change my prefs from a new entry it creates in the Tools menu on FireFox.

Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

There is a check box in the preference (under edit). I have not had great success with this setting, but that is what it is supposed to do. Don't expect it to happen in Chrome that has it's own PDF viewer (or the preview function on a MAC). You might also check the settings for your particular browser.

  • Acrobat Reader 9.4 downloads files rather than opening in Firefox 3.6.12

Clicking on a pdf file link in Firefox causes the file to download rather than opening.
I've tried checking and unchecking the "open in browser" box in Reader without success.
In looking at the Applications list in FIrefox Tools>Options>Applications, there is no listing for Adobe Acrobat Document, and I can' t find a way to add that Application. There are two entries for Adobe Acrobat Forms Document and one for Adobe Acrobat XML Data Package. Changing the Action for them doesn't resolve the problem.
Looking at the Control Panel, there is only one instance of Acrobat Reader, that being 9.4.0. I've also tried using the Repair option in Reader.
    I'm running XP3 Pro Service Pack 3.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Ken

You can get that error if there is still an old Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

  • When a linked .pdf is clicked, it downloads rather than following the link and opening in another safari window.

When a linked .pdf is clicked, it downloads rather than following the link and opening in another safari window.

Thanks for the tip, but I had already tried this and it did not help. The File still downloads and , at the same time, a new Safari window opens - but the Safari window is blank.
Another discussion thread related to this problem is:
How do I prevent automatic downloading of .pdf files?
but this deals  with Safari 5.1 which evidently has a problem with Adobe Reader.
I am using Safari 5.0, so the suggested solutions do not apply. ( I tried them anyway, but they did not work.)

  • Firefox is forcing Acrobat file to be saved, rather than opening it. How can this be fixed?

When I visit a website that has a .pdf file on it and I try to download the file, rather than opening up to be read, Firefox asks where it should be saved. It does not directly open the file for viewing as it had done last week. Thanks for any advice to address this problem.

I finally found the right fix in the reset section of Check Firefox settings. I clicked on "Help" and clicked on "Troubleshooting Information". Under "Application Basics", I clicked on "Open Containing Folder". A window with my profile files opened. I selected the "mimetypes.rdf" file and deleted it. I then closed the Mozilla program, rebooted my computer and then reopened Mozilla Firefox. Voila - It returned "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" in my settings. All is well.

  • Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5

I recently upgraded from mac cs4 to cs5.5. Due to a bug? with cs5 ai illustrator 'Pixel Preview' won't show 1 bit tiff files as it did in cs4 (the workaround is time consuming/wasting). This is a problem for me as most of my files contain them, GGrrrr. Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5?

Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5?
Yes, either set the file type association in Bridge prefs for 'ai' at CS4. But it seems somewhat difficult when having newer versions, sometimes whatever pref settings in Bridge or Finder/get info/ open with/you try it keeps opening in the latest version.
In that case either drag and drop the files on the CS4 icon in the dock or with right click mouse menu choose open with and select illustrator CS4.
Although you can only have one version of Bridge open at the time you can have the other suite applications from different version open at the same time.

  • When right clicking to open link in new window (not tab) foxfire immediately switches windows rather than opening new window in background

Just updated to foxfire 15.0, and now each time I open a link in a new window foxfire will switch immediately to that newly opened window rather than opening the new window in the background as it did before I updated to 15.0. I am aware of the option to check or uncheck switching to new tabs immediately, but I am speaking of opening a link in a new window, not tab. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • Tricky - PDF file not Opening from Web Browser based application

    Hi Guys,
Just a brief history about the issue:
At my client site everything was fine when IE7 was there and everybody were able to open PDF files from web applications in browsers. But after a IE8 upgrade, things changed and customers are facing problems. All are Windows XP SP3 machines
Issue: If they try to open a pdf file from the browser it just stucks at 0% and hangs with "Cancel" button. Even if they try to save that file it tell downloading and hangs again in the screen without downloading the file.
    Initial fix:
    Open Adobe Reader
    -> select the menu "Edit"
    -> select "Preferences"
    -> select the Category "Internet"
-> set the indicator "Display PDF in browser"
    -> Reboot the machine
This fix worrked for some people but many user are still experiencing the same thing even after changing the setting many times.
Friends, Is there anything else might be creating the trouble here. Please let me know, and why it is that for some systems it is working and for it is not ?
    Thanks,

There was a browser bug with IE in the past that seemed to span several browser versions.  It had to do with the interaction of the browser and the webserver.  The short version is that I had to toggle the caching option on the folder.
Here's what I ended up doing for my client:
Move their PDF documents into a subfolder called forms and all Flash animations into a subfolder called flash
Marked all folders in the site to "Expire Immediately" (IIS -> highlight root folder -> Properties)
Individually marked the "/forms" and "/flash" folders to toggle this caching option
In this way, it allowed dynamic pages to deliver non-cached content (from the server's perspective) and it allowed binary downloads like Flash animations and PDF files to work as expected without errors.  The bug has to do with the cache-negotiation handshaking that goes on between the browser and server.
This may not be what you're seeing but it's good to remember because I've seen it often:  the settings that you'd use to optimize a web applications don't seem to work for binary downloads like a PDF document.

  • Put back "Open Link in New Window" first and default, rather than "Open Link in New Tab" in Safari 6.1

I do not like the order of the context menu changes in Safari 6.1.  I have become accustomed to using "Open Link In New Window" first in the context list, rather than the new "Open Link In New Tab".  I do not wish to use Tabs.  How may I remove this?

Well, I solved it just after I posted this.  I opened up the Safari Preferences, then went to the TABS section, and set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: to NEVER", and unchecked "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab".   That set it back to open in new windows.
Tabs work if I am making quick tabs to refer to something.  Horrible if I want to compare two websites side by side.  So, by disabling the auto TAB function, I'm back to the way I prefer my browser to work, rather than the way something thinks I ought to use it.
Don't care about having all my browsers behavior the same.  If I wanted that, I would have run those browsers.

  • HT1766 How can I select an older backup to restore my device from, rather than restoring from last backup performed?

I did a backup after doing a sync with my iTunes only to find that I un-ticked the sync apps box, resulting in my apps to be deleted and most of them losing their data. I have all the data of these apps on backups I did previously to the most recent one but don't know how to select older backups.
Is their anyway to restore my device from an older backup, rather than the most recent one?

Knowing where backups are stored is one thing, interpreting them (and getting them back to your iOS device) is another!
If you did your sync, but no backup immeiately after it (for some reaon some people do) then you may have success. Without connecting your iPad to our computer, go to the screen I mentioned in my earlier post and put a tick in the box PREVENT IPOD .... FROM BACKING UP AUTOMATICALLY and click OK. Then connect your iPad and restore from the previous backp if it is there! You can then go back and change the PREVENT...... setting.
When you get this all sorted out you can consider iCloud for additional backups. If you do not use iCloud routinely then you can switch it on temporarily to do a manual backup, even multiple backups.
However, you can trick iTunes into doing additional backups by changing the device name. For instance, you can do a backup under the device name of, say, Liam's iPad, then change the iPad name to Liam's iPad 1, Liam's iPad 2, etc with a backup under each name! Whichever backup name you use in due course to restore your iPad is the name that will appear as your device name under Settings on the iPad.

  • Most times when I want to open a document, Firefox saves it in Downloads, rather than just letting me read it. How do I prevent this?

In earlier versions of Firefox, I was able to open a document e.g. an email attachment or a document following a link in a website, and then decide if I wanted to save it or just read it. Now more often than not, it automatically saves it to Downloads, though not every time. The choices in Settings/General relate only to choosing which folder to save them in, and not to opt not to save at all. By way of example, I went to www.overseal.org, then chose Documents and Budget 2013-2014.
This means that nothing appears to happen on screen, and to view the document, I have to go to Downloads, and subsequently delete it from there if I don't want to keep it. Can I change a setting somewhere to revert to previous practice please?

  • I want Firefox to give me the option to download a file with a .mm extension rather than opening it as if it were an xml file

I have created a web page that provides links to files with the .mm extension. These files are created by the Freemind application (http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). When I click one of these links, Firefox opens the file as if it were a text (xml) file. I have looked at the Applications page in Preferences, but there is no obvious way to add a new application and then specify that Firefox should "Always ask" what I want to do. Essentailly, how do I do that?

    Hi jhayles,
Have you looked checked in ''Tools > Options > Applications'' to see if you have told Firefox to always save the file? You should take a look at the [[Options window - Applications panel]] Knowledge Base article for details.
If you set Firefox to always ask and it doesn't, you may want to check out the [[Preferences are not saved]] article.
    Hopefully this helps!
