PDFs created from Save As PDF when Printing?

I a m working in QuarkXPress 6.5, creating a business card using PMS colors and CMYK tifs. When I "Save As a PDF…" from the Print dialog box, I think everything is okay. Then I send it to a printing company and they double-check the image and say it is a RGB, not CMYK, And also, the fonts print as outlines, causing the characters to spread. They are using a PC & Adobe Acrobat to check the files. I need help — fast!!
Mac Intel Duo Core Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   printers are Epson CX4200 & HP 5000

Hi JackieDesigns2,
I always tell people to make the PDF with the end result in mind. If you're wanting to "print" the PDF, then make the PDF CMYK and not RGB. This goes for sending the resulting PDF to another printer or whatever.
Here's a link to help you with the settings:
http://www.aapg.org/advertise/AAPGPDFSettings.pdf
The PDF X-1a specification forces all fonts to embedd, CMYK color space, no ICC profiles, no transparency and some other little goodies made for printing everyone can go by.
I will say that while many applications have their own why to "make" a PDF, the best, most consistant method is to make a postscript file and distill the postscript file.
Keep in mind that programs that write postscript, write (or speak) postscript with different dialect's so-to-speak. Some interpeters can understand the common dialect where it cannot understand others. This is why some app's are more problematic than others in making good postscript.
Quark writes fairly clean postscript (or used to), distilling your files from Quark should work well.

  • Automatically prompt to save PDF when Print Preview for Purchase Order?

    We recently upgraded to EP7.
    I have an end user that does our PO's.
    She swears up and down that she used to be able to go into any given PO, be it new or existing, and click on the print preview button. She says when she did this she was prompted to save or open the file.
    She is set to PDF Preview when doing a print preview of the PO.
    When we first upgraded the system, it was broken. When she tried to do this it would give you a Page Cannot Be Displayed error as in unable to find the page. We learned that there was an issue with name resolution within the system. We fixed this and now she can view the files as PDF when doing a print preview.
    But she still claims it did not used to work like this that when she went to preview she would be prompted to save or view which worked great for her because she could click save, save it to her computer, and then email it to whomever she needed to send it to.
    Seems clear to me that that when you do PDF Preview that an SAP browser session is created and sent to an web site (internal to SAP of course) to view the PDF. How can I tell SAP to give me the option to view or save?
    For now the user is repeating the output when she needs to reprint another copy of the PO.
    I should also say that we use Free PDF Creator. After setting her default printer to this, she says that now when she creates a new PO, it is working like before. So its possible that the prompt was the one from PDF Creator.
    The user says she swears she could simply print preview would allow her to save local. I never saw it for myself prior to the upgrade.
    Anyone seen this before or can offer any clues? Is there away to issue output at print preview?

    How did you fix 'page cannot be displayed' error?
    It looks like issue was at browser/pdfreader side.

    Hello
    Ive got a PDF where some hyperlinks are masked behind certain words. For digital use of this document this is fine. However when printing I would like to have the full link to be printed (eg as a comment or on top of the word which contains the link). Is there a possibility to do this with Acrobat?

  • Print to PDF is very slow showing "save as" dialog when printing from Outlook 2013

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem with one of my users.  The problem is intermittent.  At first when I was looking at the issue, here is what I saw:
    In Outlook 2013, I opened an e-mail.  I then selected Print, selected the Adobe PDF printer, and hit the print button.  There was over a 1 minute delay before the "save as" dialog appeared to ask me where to save the document and what to name it.  I did this for several different e-mails with and without attachments and the problem was consistent.  I saved the e-mail to a local e-mail file and the problem was the same.  This process was over 30 or 40 minutes.  I was pulled away for another issue and now the "save as" dialog pops up within seconds.  The user is complaining that this happens regularly.  I tried a repair, cleared temp files, and was going to try printing from other apps, but then it started temporarily behaving itself, so I can't tell you if the same delay existed in other apps.  I didn't see anything obvious in the event viewer logs.
    Has anyone else seen this?  Anyone have an idea on how to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Jeffery Smith

    Thank for your help Bill, but changing settings in the distiller did not seem to work. As my application prints directly to the default application without using anything specific to Acrobat, I was hoping there was a simple way forward. A colleague suggested copying registry entries from the account I logged on as to the S-1-5-18 entry, then rebooting. This had no effect as the prompt still comes up.
    Aandi, I don't have the Acrobat SDK or any experience of it.
    Also I'm not sure where any code/script would sit since the application is stable and so I would rather not change it.
    If it amounts to a few lines of javascript sitting outside the application then that would be of interest.

  • Can I save as pdf when printing from a Java applet on a webpage in Safari?

    I am trying to use a webpage that is running a Java applet. A dialog comes up that asks me, "Do you want to run this application?" The dialog also says, "This application will run with limited access that is intended to protect your computer and personal information." I select "Run". The applet generates an image I want to print.  There is a "Print" button on the applet.  I select "Print". A Security Warning dialog comes up that says, "The applet has requested access to the printer. Do you want to allow this action?" I select "OK".  The Print dialog comes up.  I choose the PDF button in the lower left corner. I choose "Save as PDF...". A second Print dialog comes up.  I input a title in the Save As box.  I choose Desktop in the Where box.  I do not change anything else and select the "Save" button. A dialog appears that says, "Print Error while printing." There is an icon with paper, a pencil, a ruler and a paintbrush on the dialog.
    Is this an issue with Apple and Java security?  Does "run with limited access" mean I can't print and save as PDF? Should I upgrade to Mavericks?  It seems like others have not been happy with Mavericks and have had problems saving as PDF with Mavericks. How do I let Apple know about this error?  The error dialog is useless.
    I am on a Mac running OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.1.2.  My Java version is 7 update 51.
    What other information can I provide to help solve the problem (if it can be solved)?
    Thank you for your help!

    Correction I would like to save as PDF/A-1b
    for archiving.

  • Images dropping from PDF when printing

    I am having an issue with 1 PDF file in which there are images that are dropping from the page when ripping to a digital press (iGen3).  I have tried re-pdfing the file because that has helped in the past with fonts not printing correctly because they were not embeddedd when the customer created the pdf.
    Same issue happened whether printing to the press or re-pdfing the file, a gray box appears in place of the graphic.
    We found a work around where we drop the file in a hot folder for the press.  File is supplied from customer as pdf, we do not have the native files.  sample images below:

    I've tried it twice. It crashes Word after going through all the footnotes. After I restart Word, I get the message asking to disable the plug-in.

  • Empty PDF when printing from report

    I have a number of reports where I want to be able to download the report as both CSV and PDF.
    The CSV download works fine but the PDF only contains the headers, no data. The printer is set up otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a PDF at all.
    Is there anything obvious I might have overlooked?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    We have the exact same problem with an interactive report in Apex 3.2. The CSV export works fine, but the PDF file only shows the header.
    The problem only occurs when using a page item in the where clause. Is that a bug ? How can I fix this ?
    Thanks

  • Add Curent Date & Time to PDF when Printed

    This is my first post so please excuse any ignorance.
    Basically we are in the process of creating electronic copies of SOP’s and putting them on our file server for all staff to access. Due to regulations, when these SOP’s are printed they would need to have the current date and time in which the SOP was printed, ideally like a watermark faded diagonally across the page but even if it was something on the bottom or top this would also do the trick.
    It should read "Only Valid on Date of Printing - <Current Date><Current Time>
    Could somebody please tell me if something like this is possible by incorporating JavaScript into the PDF.
    Any assistance I would be grateful.
    Thanks.
    Keith.

    Thank you so much, I got it and it worked perfect courtesy of "hardDriver2". For anybody else who is looking to do this see below.
    // Description: This script adds a text field to the left side of all
    // pages. It also sets a doc level JavaScript that executes when the
    // document is printed and fills the field with date.
    // Add field to each page of form
    var inch = 72;
    for (var p = 0; p < this.numPages; p++) {
        // create rectangle quads for field
        var aRect = this.getPageBox( {nPage: p} );
        aRect[0] = 0.0;
        aRect[1] = 0.0;
        aRect[2] = 26.0;
        aRect[3] = 792;
        // now construct text field to fill with date information
        var f = this.addField("PrintField", "text", p, aRect )
        f.delay = true;
        f.textSize = 16;
        f.textFont = font.HelvB;
        f.textColor = color.black;
        f.alignment = "center";
        f.readonly = true;
        f.print = true;
        f.hidden = true;
        f.delay = false;
    for (var p = 0; p < this.numPages; p++) {
        // rotate the text
        var f = this.getField("PrintField." + p)
        f.rotation = 90;
    // Adds a doc level script to populate text field when doc prints from
    // Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader. Note: the '\r' character represents a
    // carriage return.
    var myWillPrintScript = 'var f = this.getField("PrintField"); \r' + 'f.hidden = false; \r' + 'var d = new Date(); \r' + 'var year = d.getYear()+1900; \r' + 'f.value = "THIS DOCUMENT ONLY EFFECTIVE ON " + (d.getMonth()+1) + "/" + d.getDate() + "/" + year; \r'
    var myDidPrintScript = 'var f = this.getField("PrintField"); \r'
                               + 'f.value = ""; \r'
                               + 'f.hidden = true; \r'
    // Now set the scripts to execute on the Will/Did Print events.
    this.setAction("WillPrint", myWillPrintScript);
    this.setAction("DidPrint", myDidPrintScript);

  • Acrobat Cuts Off Bottom Of pdf When Printing

    I'm trying to create a printable form for a web page. I originally created the form in Photoshop 7, then used Acrobat 7 Pro to convert it to a pdf for downloading/printing. The problem is that Acrobat cuts off the bottom of the page when you attempt to print it. Here is a screen shot of the print dialog window. The "grayed out" area indicates the parts being cut off. The main problem is the bottom margin.  I've tried cropping margins in Document > Crop Pages, but that seems to have no effect. Changing the dimensions in Photoshop and then re-creating the pdf has no effect, either. How can I fix the formatting so it will print correctly?
    -Tnx

    Do you mean Page Scaling select in the Print dialog box, ie; "Fit to Printer Margins"?
