PDFs move very chunkily

PDFs move very "chunkily," i.e. never smoothly, on my iMac. I try to use the drag bar on the right and it does nothing--gives me the spinning wheel of death, the jumps several pages. When I use the button to advance one  page at a time, it takes 4-6 seconds to respond. This is true regardless of whether I am using a 3-page PDF or a 500-page PDF (which, being in publishing, I do a lot). This is seriously disrupting my work.
I'm not even trying to edit, add or subtract anything from the documents, just flip through checking them.
How can I fix this?
I'm running an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Lion OS 10.7.4. Upgrading from 4 GB RAM to 16 GB DDR3 Ram had no effect.
Thanks.

Good to know that Reader works.
When something is incompatible, it means that it may or may not work. Adobe Acrobat 8 was launched in November 2006 and Mac Lion somewhere in July 2011. You can expect a huge change in technology in 5 years. I wouldn't be surprised if Mac Lion doesn't understand what a software designed back in 2006, says. I guess, your friend is lucky enough to get it to work. I have seen issues where it simply crashes and causes other issues as well. Adobe strongly recommends the users to use only compatible version. In my opinion, there is no point of using an incompatible version and loosing the entire data.

in my project the timeline and/or the cursor move very jerky (in a continual chattery motion )  in windows 8.1

all  this tells me there are real problem with my Premier Element 10

You are running Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. The program works just fine in Windows 8.1 64 bit when run Windows 8.1.
So do not go altering to another operating system. I know this first hand.
The immediate factor that needs ruling in or out is your video card/graphics card. Specifically "Does your Windows 8.1 64 bit use
a NVIDIA GeForce card? If so, that may be your answer. See Announcement at the top of this forum which describe the Premiere
Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce problem and gives the fix of how to roll back the card's driver version to get Premiere Elements 10
    to work for you.
Once we are assured that you are not afflicted by Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce syndrome and also know that your current
video card/graphics card driver is up to date, then we can move on to seek other factors that may be causing the problem.
For your convenience, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement about the issue as it appears at the top of this forum.
All the links and how tos that you will need are in this announcement.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches
specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then
the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The
typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA
nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

  • Pdf refresh very slowly

I have a problem with the size of the pdf and the refresh time.
The size of the pdf is 300KB (2 pages) empty and with all the data loaded 2'5MB (6 pages).
When I make an action on the pdf the response time oscillates between 15 - 20 seconds. Is this normal? someone has the same problem?
The pdf is very complex, and has a lot of operations.
I'have changed the font, and now it's better (before, the response time was 20 - 40 seconds). But I need to reduce this time to 5 seconds (+ -).
Any idea? It could be the pdf structure (form, subform anidation? ), the use of the event calculate?, its better use dymanic or static load for a list?
I need help to improve the pdf speed!
    Thanks a lot!

On my form I use this attribute, but I use it only on the load action. And all the actions takes +- the same time.
I would like to know what is better:
*Is better duplicate an instance dynamically? Or have two instances predefined?
*I make a lot of routes for all the form, and count many times the number of instances of one element.
    I have 2 documents:
    designer_performance_1_0.pdf
    forms_performance.pdf
but I don't know exactly how to apply it!
    Thanks!

Would cleaning out the preferences help Appleworks to run smoother? I noticed that was suggested in an earlier post.
Peggy's reply is spot on. Deleting the preferences won't make AppleWorks run smoother and it's not something you should do regularly. It's only a troubleshooting remedy - if the preference files are corrupted then it causes strange behaviour with AppleWorks.
The reason deleting your recent items makes AppleWorks smoother is because AppleWorks is programmed to check them regularly. And if there's a lot of them, then it takes AppleWorks a long time to check them. This causes AppleWorks to 'run a bit rough' – it's not just handling your typing, formatting, etc but also chasing up documents on your hard drive.
Hope the explanation helps a bit.

  • InDesign CS6 & CC - form field PDF output very erratic, unusable, disappointing ...failure.

    Hi
Until very recently, my workflow has been to add the form fields in Acrobat. However due to problems getting form fields to tag properly in this workflow the client has requested that the form fields be added in InDesign which on one page or very simple tests forms appeared to work fine. Based on successful tests with single page test documents we embarked on a much larger job with a very false sense of confidence
I've just spent several days adding complex form fields to a 26 page form in multiple languages which includes text fields, check boxes and combo boxes. When output as an interactive PDF, several of the text fields and combo boxes do not highlight as form fields, but when clicked on repeatedly sometimes behave as check boxes, not as text input fields and sometimes highlight as a field when moused over, but are otherwise inert. I have tried using both text frames and images frames to create the text fields from indesign with similar results.
Check boxes sometimes work, in other cases, give an "on" value rather than a check mark which disappears when you click on another check box or move your curser off the check box.
    d as being capable of
I've spent several days now, reinstalling software, downloading the CC trial version to see if a later version would give better results, Outpting single pages, smaller page batches but nothing I have tried has improved this problem. The results are basically unusable, which is a major disappointment because it means that InDesign is incapable of performing a task it is advertised as being capable of. I am about to begin the tedious task of rebuilding this form in acrobat, but hope that someone from adobe will be willing to weigh in on this subject. If needed I can provide both the source files and the disappointing results.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on salvaging something from this situation

    Hi Derek
    Thanks for sounding in. Yes, up until now I have been doing the layout in InDesign and adding form fields in Acrobat. But there are two major flaws with this workflow;
    1. there is no way to properly tag form fields in acrobat as the accessibility tool "Add form fields to tags" does not appear to do anything in the way of adding tags, so in the age of accessibility these forms are basically unusable to a person using a blind reader
    2. when the client makes edits (which they always do), you have a big workflow downstream, at the very least you have to go through and cut and paste from the old PDF to the new PDF
Besides which Adobe has boldly made the claim that, as of CS6, the form fields can be set-up in InDesign...

  • After updating to Acrobat PRO 9.5.2 PDFs open VERY Slowly

I am using Acrobat PRO on a workstation (Windows 7 Ultimate - Service Pack 1)
After updating to Acrobat PRO 9.5.2, all pdf files open VERY slowly (30-60 secs). It does not appear to matter if the file is local to the workstation or on the network. Also the size of the file does not seem to matter or whether this is the first file opened or a subsequent file.
In addition just opening Adobe Acrobat is equally slow.
I have tried turning off the anti-virus software. No impact.
    Any suggestions appreciated...

Have you tried "Repair Acrobat Installation" to see if it makes any difference?  To do this try this:
    Help >> Repair Acrobat Installation.
Another option is to press the shift key while clicking or double clicking on the PDF file to open.  this stops loading all the useless fonts in the document and other useless plugins in acrobat.
The third option is to delete the registry key that appears to be corrupted . However, if you nothing about registry keys, then you can't do it unless your company systems people can help you.  The registry entries are:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Acrobat Reader
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Adobe Acrobat
It is a question of renaming them while you have exited from acrobat.  Once this is done, restart the system and start/launch the acrobat and the fresh keys will be generated.  PLEASE NOTE: DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE THE HELP OF YOUR SYSTEMS PEOPLE IN YOUR COMPANY.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help!! Flash CS3 and CS4 "Test Movie" very slow on OS X

This is a problem that, having read many forums, affects a
very large amount of people, though Adobe doesn't care at all. It
only affects OS X users. I know that it has been addressed many
times in different forums, but I never actually stumbled across
    anyone having found a solution.
When I use Flash CS3, and I make any animation, even the
simplest tween, and I preview it with Test Movie, the result I get
is an extremely slow playback. Something like half the FPS it
    should be.
However, when I export the SWF and preview it in the external
Flash Player or in a browser, it's just fine and fast.
Another interesting thing is that in CS3, when I open the
Help panel, the problem with Test Movie only happens like 20% of
the time. In that case, it only gets solved if I restart or Log Out
at least. I have no idea why the Help panel being open solves the
problem, this only shows that this is probably a little graphic
user interface bug, or something similar, that could be solved very
    very easily.
In Flash CS4, there is no Help panel, so there is no solution
    to the problem.
It would be nice to be able to press Cmd + Enter to see the
movie, and not have to do File > Export > bla bla bla, open
Finder, Find the SWF, double click it, wait for the browser to
    open... etc...
I have a brand new 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro, and Test Movie runs
faster on my 900MHz Pentium III PC!! Funny...
Here are some links I found about this problem:
    http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-878
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407896
    http://www.kirupa.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-258991.html
This is quite ridiculous, and on Adobe's Support page, the
solution is "Do not use Test Movie."
And the funny thing is that they didn't even bother to fix
    this in CS4...
So basically if something doesn't work, Adobe's solution is
    "Don't use it."
    I guess they're right!
Please, tell me if anyone has or does not have this problem
    or knows anything about it!

  • Anyone no longer able to save iPage doc as a PDF after VERY recent software update?

I recently updated, per my usual when the Mac prompts me.  Today was unable to save iPages documents as a PDF - a function I use daily in my business. Please let me know if you've encountered this and how you repaired the bug.  Thanks!

There is no necessity to upgrade your copy of Creative Suite every two years.
However, apparently you chose to upgrade your operating system version. Was there any necessity of doing that, especially doing so very quickly after it was released? For better or worse, Apple does not regard ongoing application compatibility as a requirement for their new OS releases. Thus, if you upgrade versions of MacOS, be prepared to (1) upgrade your applications as well and (2) possibly endure a period of time in which the applications don't work under the new OS version until the application vendor can re-jigger their code to deal with the upwards-incompatible OS changes.
These issues are not confined to Adobe applications, but also affect Microsoft Office and any significantly complex applications that are provided directly by Apple themselves. There is nothing we at Adobe can do about this and we like this situation no more than you do.
This is not the first time these problems of upward-incompatible OS releases have plagued users and application vendors. It took Apple until 10.5.6 to get some level of stability in the 10.5.x (Leopard) OS release so that it was reasonably usable with most third party applications, drivers, etc.
I suggest you also vent to St. Steve (the Infallible) of Cupertino!

  • Adobe Reader 9 Colors in PDF print very light

    Hello,
I am having an annoying problem with Adobe Reader 9. I have been printing PDFs from it, but the trouble is that the color accuracy is poor.
The colors on the printed page are much lighter than they should be. I have printed the same PDF from a different version of Adobe Reader, namely version 6. The printed colors are exactly as they should be.
This problem is not related to the different ICC color profiles used by the monitor and the printer since using an older version of Adobe Reader doesnt cause this problem. I have tried setting options such as Let printer determine colors, Print as Image and Discolored background correction. These options have reduced the problem but have made little difference. The difference in color is still very noticeable.
I have also tried printing out some color samples namely Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black blocks of color to test if any are at fault. The yellow comes out as green. This must be where the problem lies. All the other color samples are fine.
Are there any suggestions you could offer to fix or significantly reduce the difference in color? Using the very old Adobe Reader 6.0 is far from ideal.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jim Collins

We have a similar issue with Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.x ver. The PDF onscreen colors are totally different than the hard copy. We have tried printing on different models of color printers and there is no issue with the printer drivers. The PDF files are generated from Primavera (P6) application.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanx.

  • Flattening a PDF moves stamps that exist within the document.

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Pro 9 and I have PDFs that contain multiple pages some of which contain stamps. When I flatten the file to make uneditable it will move the stamps to different areas on the same page they're on. Is there an option in PDF Fixups that will stop that from happening?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Dave,
I installed updates when I first encountered the problem. My user verified that it is indeed happening to all of the PDFs she flattens. Prior to going into PDF fixups and flattening, she would print the PDF document to PDF which would finalize it. The issue she was having with that was that it would start the process but within 5 seconds the message would pop up indicating that the job was done, the document would open but less than half of the pages would convert over. So a 145 page PDF would only show 20 pages after it was printed to PDF. I'll take a look at my flattener tool thank you for your response Dave.

  • Movie very large (So Close yet so Far away)

Ok so im about seconds away of finishing up my feature film. I have the menu and its very large. The movie it self is 1 hour and 27 minutes. And there are 5 features leading to be about another 1 hour and 30 minutes.
I compressed everything but still the actual movie takes up 3GB of the disk. And with everything is about 5 GB.
How do i make al lof this fit in the quickest time possiable

Have you tried using Quick Time directly? You can export from there as MPEG2 as well... you just don't get the bells and whistles that you get with Compressor.
If you are likely to do a lot of this kind of work then I can really recommend that you invest in a different encoder as well - BitVice or MegaPEG.X are the two to use on a Mac. Both are a couple of hundred dollars or so... and well worth it!
About Compressor not starting - if you look in the Compressor forum there are umpteen references to this problem. For the most part they can be resolved by re-starting your machine, which in turn re-starts the qmaster service. However, you can also do this from Terminal if you need to. This from a post a long time ago... not from me, I add:
Launch Terminal (Application>Utilities>Terminal) and type this:
    sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster
Then hit return, then enter your administrative password. Then you should get a message about Qmaster services starting up.
Re-launch Compressor, see if it works.
    Or
go to finder, go, go to folder
    type /etc/
    view as icons
locate "hostconfig" and COMMAND then click on fileand drag to desktop. To do this, you MUST press command FIRST then while holding it down click the file and drag to desktop – if you’ve clicked on the file first, the command click you will unselect the file. If you don't get it the first time, keep trying.
Once on the desktop, rename the file to "hostconfig.old" all lower case
COMMAND drag the newly named file back into the etc folder.
That's it! Restart your machine and start-up compressor.
If those two don't solve it, you'll need to hunt around for other solutions, I'm afraid.

  • Converting .docx merges to PDF is very slow.

Hi all first post, so hello!
As the thread question states, I am trying to figure out creating PDFs from docx merges are very very slow to complete. We are using Adobe Acrobat 8, and Microsoft Word 2007 on Windows XP.
Before we upgraded to MS Office 2007 and the docx format, Acrobat 8 created PDF merges in the the 2003 .doc format just fine and was very quick. We can even created PDFs from .doc merges through Office 2007 and it is still works great and is super fast. But once we try a creating a PDF from a .docx merge, it crawls and is very slow, and is starting to be time consuming for the users. I checked out the 3-4 people that perform this function, and they all seem to have the same issue.  So i would guess this would have something to do with the .docx format and the way Adobe 8 interprets the format to create a PDF from it. The documents normally fall within the 1200-1500 page range.
Acrobat 8 has been updated with the latest program updates, but I am a loss as to why .doc's create so fast, but docx's are very very slow.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I tried to include all pertinent info you would need, if I left something out, please let me know.
    Thanks!
