Pdfs moved in file structure

So i updated my OS to mavericks because my brother said it was ok, even after i had read some poor reviews in the app store. My issue is that after the update happened and i opened ibooks my os has seemingly w/o asking first, took all epubs and moved them into some hidden folder, renamed them, and deleted the old versions, and even did this with some pdf books i had. is there any way to turn this functionality off? i just want to have my epubs/pdfs back where they were with the names they used to be

sberman, many people are unhappy with what the new iBooks has done. We were happy with our books being in the iTunes Library, especially those of us who store their books and music on external drives or NAS, and controlling book/pdf syncing via iTunes.
In order to use iBooks, it wants the PDFs and epubs brought onto the local disk which is completely unacceptable for a lot of us. Also, the renaming of epubs is then forcing a reliance upon the iBooks database and UI to know which book is which. All in all, not nice.

  • Moving original files when you use your own folder structure

I currently maintain my own folder structure (on the HDD) for Aperture to read files from (rather than allow it to create its own complicated structure). Based on what i have seen so far, I understand that Aperture links its project with the HDD folder from where you import images.
In an instance, where I moved my file from the HDD folder structure, the image still appears in Aperture, but with a yellow question mark, and it does not allow me to edit it. Here I am assuming that since i moved the file from its HDD folder, Aperture is no longer able to locate it. Hence, I have the following queries about moving/ deleting files from my HDD:
Q1: If I want to move a file from one HDD folder to another, how do I do so without losing its link in Aperture
Q2: How do I completely delete a file from my HDD using Aperture? Assume here that I have imported it into Aperture but haven't made any changes to it, which means that I have only one version, the master version. Currently, when I delete it in Aperture using 'Delete version', I notice that the file still exists in the HDD folder). Is it that the only way to delete a file is to do so first from Aperture and then use Finder to delete it from the HDD folder? If not, whats the best way.
Q3: There is another scenario for Q2 - If I have made changes to a file after importing it in Aperture, there are now two versions, master version and edited version. If I want to delete both these files, whats the best way to do so.

OK let's take a step back here.  In your previous post you wrote asking how to move a file from one folder on your HD to another so that Aperture wouldn't loose track of it. And for that we answered to use File->Relocate Masters. The last two questions concerned deleting images from both Aperture and the HD. And we covered that.
    Now you write:
f i want to move my master and version files from one project to another (and the corresponding master files too), i should first move the master files using File> Relocate master and then drag-drop the versions from within Aperture. (I usually maintain similar names for my HDD folders and corresponding projects in Aperture, hence if i move the master, then it makes sense to move the versions too).
Now you're bringing in  moving images in Aperture from one project to another.  What you are saying is correct but bear in mind:
The library structure inside Aperture is totally independent of the file structure you use to store referenced masters on the HD outside of Aperture.
Now It is possible to have one mimic the other as you seem to be doing but for all intents and purposes Aperture doesn't care at all how the external file structure appears as long as Aperture knows were the masters are.
So if you want to move masters INSIDE of Aperture from one project to another you can simply drag the visible image from the source project to the destination project. All versions will come along, versions are coupled to their masters and as such can't be moved independently. Any versions in Albums will continue to point to the master they came from.
Now if you want to move the master files EXTERNAL to Aperture you need to use the File->Relocate Master command so that Aperture will know were the files are.
Note: there is another command File->Locate Referenced Files that is used to connect Aperture to its referenced masters if the connection between the two is somehow broken. As for example what would happen if you moved the referenced masters using the finder rather then the Aperture command.
So you should be good to go, just remember that the two structures, Aperture library and referenced files, are independent and don't really need to be kept in sync. And by doing this you're  making extra work for yourself that isn't really necessary.

  • Moving a Folder from the iTunes Folder to My Own File Structure

I'm trying to move a folder from the default iTunes folder to a folder on another drive where I am managing the file structure. This allows me to file music as I would like to on the disk an makes things much easier to find when I need to.
Recently I've noticed that when I do this I lose some of the song meta data such as the image and rating which is kind of annoying. Is there any way to do this and not lose meta data?

If the external drive is in NTFS format (which is how most new drives are shipped), the Mac can't write to it. Reformat it with Disk Utility, putting it into Mac OS Extended format.

  • Moving file structure to a new disk

I am trying to move my catalog and photo files from one disk that is running out of space to another drive. I have tried all the obvious like backing up and restoring to another disk which created the catalog file as well as the file structure but when I open the new catalog it still points to the old file structure. I am using Elements 3.0.
Any Ideas? It is important for me to maintain the original folder structure since I think some filenames are the same. Also it is important for me to maintain all my tagging inof.

Are you sure you opened the new catalog?
What happens if you just move all the folders to the new disk in Windows, and then change the drive letter so that (for example) if the old drive was D:, then the new drive becomes D: ??

  • A scalable, user-friendly file structure?

    Hello,
I've been researching this topic for a while and i think i am missing something obvious and making this harder than it should be. Our org currently has a very large SHARED folder structure which is deep and organized mainly by department. Users know the
structure and accept it. However we are now running into disk space limitations within the structure as a whole because certain users using specific directories are storing lots of data. I would like to point certain folders WITHIN the folder structure to
new shares on different storage (reparse points?) so the disk limit is lifted BUT users maintain the same data layout. Most people say, "Just use DFS-N" but i don't this will work AND be scalable for a change at a later time when a new directory
gets large and needs moved to new storage. Does anyone have any insight into user SHARED area design (these are word, excel, pdf, etc. type files).
    THX> Eric

    Hi Eric,
You could create a DFS namespace and connect it to the new storage of the large folders. If the new storage gets large, you only need to copy the folders to another storage and set the namespace connected to the storage.
A simply way is to create a shortcut of the larger folders in your folder structure, type the shared folder’s UNC path. Then the shortcut point to the new storage.

  • Is there any way to use iPhoto without it moving my files?

I tried to use iPhoto ONCE last yer when I bought my Mac Mini, and it moved all my photo files around as it pleased, is there any way to stop it fro moving my files? I like the folder/file structure I have given my pictures and I do not need to have that managed.
At the moment I am using Picasa but I would like to know if it is possible to use iPhoto without it deciding what to do with my files.
    Thanks!

    No
It is a SQL database and it must control its database - like any database program
as long as you think of managing files rather than managing photos it is not the program for you - once you think of managing your photos then having the poser of a database for that will be obvious - if that is not what you want then do not use it
BTW - iPhoto does not ever "move" your files - it makes a copy of each photo in its database and manages it there - your files are never touched

  • How can you convert multiple PDF files at once to PDF/A-1b files

I support individuals who on occasion have to submit a mass of files to a court and the requirement is that the files be in PDF/A format. Most are scanned files lacking the requisite structure to become PDF/A-1a files. So as I convert or resave files, I need to be able to specify that they be converted to the PDF/A-1b standard. And since it may involve over 100 files, it would be very inefficient to do so individually, file by file. Could this be done via an Action Wizard sequence? Could a script be written in Java that go through such a process, specifically choosing a PDF/A standard? Any insights would be appreciated.

PDF/A-1a is very easy to automate in Acrobat XI Pro, indeed the compliance code was rewritten specifically with this in mind. Test Screen Name is correct that PDF/A-1b can't be realistically automated due to the complexity of tagging, but that's not your concern.
In Acrobat XI Pro, create a new Action with no functional steps in it, then add the Save step.
Click 'Settings' and change the output format to "Export File(s) to Alternate Format"
Choose PDF/A from the list. It doesn't say so, but that's A-1b.
I suggest using the file renaming feature so you're not overwriting the originals (e.g. append "_A1B")
Save the Action and run it.
Files with security, distributed forms, etc. can't be converted but the Acrobat engineering team claim that everything which can possibly be shoehorned into PDF/A will always succeed. In previous versions of Acrobat it often failed when it encountered things like iffy XMP data.

  • How to create a simple File structure for a large project?

    Hi to all,
I've own and operated my own website design/development (a 1 woman office, plus many sub-contractors) over the period of 8 years. I started hand-coding HTML sites in 1997, before the creation DW (though I think the first ver was for Mac in '97). Over the recent years I've udated my skills to include CSS and enough Java/PHP to customize and/or troubleshoot current projects (learn as I go).
The majority of my clients have been other 1-10 person entrepreneur companies. I've recently won a bid to redesign a government site which consist of 30 departments, including their main site.
The purpose of this thread is to get some ideas on creating a file management/structure. Creating file management setup for smaller companies was a piece of cake, using a simple file mgmt structure within DW. Their current file structure is all over the place. I've read about a very good, simple file struture in a DW CS4 manual and wanted to get feedback on different methods that have worked, and have not worked, or your client:
    Here's my thinking:
    1. within the root dir place home.htm and perhaps a few .htm related only to home
        2. create the following folders off the root, "docs, imgs/global, CSS, FLA, Departments"
                - sub folders within docs for each dept
                - site wide css's placed into CSS
                - site wide FLAs into the FLA
                - sub-folders created within 'imgs' for each dept, including a 'global folder' for sitewide images and menu imgs (if needed)
    - OR -
    1. create same file structure for each dept folder, such as 'imgs/CSS/FLA/Docs'
    Open for suggestions....
    Ciao

It is a problem I have thought over at length and still feel what I use could be better. You are doing it the right way around researching before you start, as moving files once things are underway can course real problems. One issue is the use of similar assets across site(s), and version control if you have multiple versions of the same asset.
Can not say I have built a site(s) of that size but would recommend putting together a flow chart to help visualise the structure and find out better ways organising (works for me). Good luck, post back with your solution.

  • How to keep links from being broken when moved or file is later split

Which is the best way to make sure that a link to another pdf file is not broken when a file is emailed or moved to a new location off of the server?  Should you link a destination or use the hyperlink feature?
If the links are created and the file then has to be split, will the links be retained in the split files?

    PDF moved —
PDF#1 has a link to PDF#2. To keep this link functional after putting PDF#1 elsewhere:
--| Relocate PDF#2 with PDF#1; maintaining the same path to the target of the link (which is PDF#2).
--| Or, use Acroat's link tool to modify the link in PDF#1 so that you establish a functional path to wherever PDF#2 is at.
For email, if PDF#1 & PDF#2 are adjacent to one another under some folder/directory & then linked you'd want to email both files together. Both PDFs can be saved &, provided they stay adjacent, the links will work.
    PDF split —
PDF#3 has internal links (e.g., a link from PDF page 1 to some other PDF page in PDF#3).
You split PDF#3 by extracting the first 5 PDF pages & now have PDF#4.
Any links in PDF#4, to PDF#3 pages past page 5 will not function.
Use Acrobat's Link tool to modify the link such that it goes from PDF#4 to the desired page in PDF#4.
n.b., There are 3rd party plug-ins for Acrobat that can facilitate bookmark and link management.
A web search will provide a listing.
    Be well...

  • When moving a file using drag and drop, as I hover over the destination folder it no longer opens, so I can't drop the file into the folder.  Why?

When moving a file using drag and drop, as I hover over the destination folder it no longer opens, so I can't drop the file into the folder.  Why?  I have a heirarchical embedded folder structure under \Documents.  Usually, as I drag the file to be moved over the various folders, they will blink twice, then expand/open to reveal contents (in Finder).  Now, when the file to be moved is held (hovering) over the destination folder, it will not blink or expand, so there's no place to drop the file.  If I release the mouse button, the file image disappears, showing that it is "going back to the place it came from", a.k.a. was not moved.  This just started happening.  I noticed it after upgrading to Mavericks.  Is this a bug or could anything else be causing this?

As of today, Apple Support discovered during a remote support session with me that the same thing happens on their own system.  It is isolated to "Column View"; the Icon and List views in Finder behave correctly.  Issue is being escalated to engineering, and Apple will call to report status in a couple days.  In all likelihood, this is a bug that will need to be addressed in a future update.

  • Remnants of original file structure in library

While most of my photos have been re-arranged in the new library by roll name, when I look in the library via finder, I see that there are still some photos that remain in the original Date named folders.
These photos also now ALL seem to appear under a new roll number that was created automatically during the iPhoto 06 upgrade, regardless of when the said photos were originally created.
All of these photos were at some time modified by photoshop CS.
    The question is:
Should/can I delete the remnants of the original file structure from my library (the date named folders, as seen in finder), now that it appears that most everything has been moved from the date based folders to the "Original" and "Modified" folders?

Hey deejaybee - I had the same issue a while back, in my case the new roll (and hence the leftover folders) contained more than 1000 images!
Best advice is don't delete the remnants in the Finder, not until they contain no images at all. Check the images in the new roll within iPhoto, delete them from there if you're sure (which will in turn remove them from the remnant Finder folders), then delete the empty Finder folders.
    In iPhoto:
1 Click on the Library in the Source list, opt to Sort by Film Roll and scroll to the new roll created by the upgrade.
2 Check each image in the new roll against where it should be in your Library. Prior to the v6 upgrade, each of these photos originally existed in another, earlier, roll (created when you first imported them) and those original rolls will now contain either duplicates of the photos in the new roll, 'original' pre-edit versions of the photos in the new roll or - more worryingly - no copy of the photos at all. If you can't quickly locate the original roll:
    a Select a photo in the new roll and click the 'i' button in the bottom left corner of the iPhoto window to show you the date the photo was taken;
    b Click the calendar button (to the right of the 'i' button) and select the exact date you just found;
c If you're still in Library / Film Roll view, you'll now see just the rolls containing photos from that date; the selected photo should originally have existed in one of these and others from the same shoot should still be there.
In your case you say all the photos in the new roll had at some point been modified in Photoshop; what you should be looking out for then is the 'original' copies of those photos, if you keep / kept them (so you can always 'Revert to Original' if you don't like your edits). If not the originals then at the very least ensure that those new roll photos still exist in the original roll(s) in their edited form.
If you can't locate the photos in the original roll(s) at all, and you wish to keep them, don't delete the copies in the new roll! Either leave them in the new roll or, in full Library / roll view (i.e. with the calendar button not selected) select & drag them from the new roll to the roll they were originally in.
As an example, in my case many of the photos in the new roll were unedited 'originals'. The edited versions of these still existed where they should have in their original rolls, and for these edited versions the 'Revert to Original' menu option was still available, but selecting it did nothing - because the original photos had somehow become orphaned, hence iPhoto moving them to the new roll, to draw the to my attention. I dragged the originals back to the correct rolls and deleted the edited versions - I can always recreate edits from an original photo, but I can never recreate the original photo once it's gone.
Once you've emptied the new roll completely, by either dragging the photos back to another roll or by simply deleting them, the remnant Finder folders will also be empty and can then safely be deleted.
Hope this doesn't sound all too pedantic; out of my 1000+ photos, a large proportion of them were not to be found elsewhere in my Library and I would have lost rather a lot by simply deleting them without consideration...

  • Importing File Structure into iPhoto

I need help (or perhaps someone could kindly point me in the right direction) importing the file structure I had set up for my photos. Currently, I have my photos filed in an external drive. The structure I have created is, for example, 2008 folder, then under that 2008 folder I have a folder for each month, then in each month I have an events folder (christmas, tree cutting, etc...). This would look something like this: 2008/12/Christmas Day. Is there a way to import this structure into iPhoto?
Thanks for the help... (if you've made it this far!)!
    -Ann Marie

    Ann Marie:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can achieve that by using virtual folders, 2007, 2008, etc. and the have smart albums in each of those folder for the months. The criteria for the January smart album would be "Date is the range 01/01/2007 to 01/31/2007".
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto and finder file structure

    Hi everyone,
How can I make iPhoto use the file structure of Finder?
I understand the concept of "rolls" and the download from your camera is a new roll and these end up in your originals folder as well.
So in the course of a vacation I could have been in 5 cities and want to create albums of these. Is there a way to make the album show in finder? I tried to make a folder but you can't drag pictures into a folder. At least I couldn't.
I'm just trying to simplify life a little when I'm not using iPhoto and need a picture. Hope there is a setting to save stuff in folders outside if iPhoto.

    RonsMac:
First, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that's in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't help the try the following:
NOTE: When you use BatChmod there's no indication of the process working after you enter your admin password except when it's done you get hit up for a donaton. Those settings I suggested can also be applied to your User (home) folder. I've done it several times. But only on your home folder!
Have you run Disk Utility and verified the hard drive? If no do so and see if it indicates that some repairs are necessary. It it does, boot into your system install disk, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the first window after the language select window. Repair the disk and reboot.
If you have another account on the Mac, log into it and see if you can get iPHoto to export OK. If not, then I'd do the following:
    1 - reapply the 10.4.10 COMBO updater.
    2 - run the Quicktime 7.2 updater
3 - reinstall iPhoto (when you reinstall iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder).
If iPhoto exports OK in the other account then there's something in your primary account that is the culprit. One test is to determine if there's another preference file that's affecting iPhoto. Here's how to run the test:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
