PDFs/plugin ceased working in Safari

Hi! Safari doesn't wanna display PDFs directly in the browser window any more. Some PDFs open, but use the Adobe Acrobat plugin rather than Schubertit's PDF plugin (which is set as the default and the Adobe plugin is actually disabled, at least that's what I see in the Acrobat preferences). Other PDFs don't open at all any more. Safari opens a new page when I click a link to a PDF and pretends it's opening it (progress bar and rotating little wheel), but the page stays just white when it's done. The PDF plugin used to work fine until recently. I'm not sure if a recent security update or the Safari update 2.0.1 broke it, but it started misbehaving at around the same time. Anybody else with a similar issue? Any fixes? Camino opens the same PDFs perfectly fine using PDF plugin.

William,
There is at least one other thread about this problem, which I also have as of 2.0.1, but I haven't done the latest security update or new iTunes 5 or java, etc., so I'm pretty sure it's a safari issue. Nothing that involves audio streaming (maybe video content also) works, including Flash. I've tried everything here short of re-installing Safari 2.0 (trying to figure out how to do that right now) or totally re-installing the OS, which I just did last month. I've stripped out all CMs, Prefs, Bundles, Startup Items and run all the normal maint routines, with no help.
Retrospect is also crashing now, out of the blue, so I can't even get to my older version of Safari on there. :/
I really hope someone figures this out. Here's what my crash reporter says:

  • Save as PDF no longer works in Safari in 10.5.1

Since this has to do with the printing interface I'm guessing this is where the post goes.
I found that saving a webpage as a pdf no longer works from Safari 3.0.4 in OS 10.5.1. The print dialog box won't go away after selecting save as pdf so you have to force quit Safari. It looks like the save dialog goes behind the print dialog and I can't get to it.
Anybody else have this issue? I found that other people were having printing of pdf problems, but I didn't see this one.
    -Dan

Never mind. Seems that Default Folder V 3.0.2 was causing the issue. I killed the Default Folder task and problem is gone. Time to buy an upgrade.

  • Cannot get Java Web plugin to work in Safari.

I have been using the JAva web plugin for a while, and managed to get past the problem with the Oracle Java 7 plugin successfully, but today, the Java web plugin is not working for me at all, and I'm struggling to find out why.
When I visit java.com and run their detection page, afer about a minute, it comes back with "We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser."
I've followed the advice at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559 on how to re-enable the old Java 6 web plugin, I've tried reinstalling the Oracle plugin... but no matter what I do (restarting Safari, enabling disabling Java in Safari preferences, rebooting the Mac), I still cannot get it working in Safari.
This is a massive problem as website myself and my 20,000 colleagues use to log in to work remotely depends on the Java web plugin.  Right now (as in this morning)... the only option I have is to use a different OS (i.e. Windows).
Longer term, I really want to get this working on OS X again - any advice on further troubleshooting?

Apple has barred Java from running on Macs, leaving companies that rely on Java plug-ins out in the cold.
Apple blocked Java 7 Update 11 by adding it to the banned list in XProtect.
This is the second time in two weeks that Apple has blocked Oracle's code from running on Macs. This time Java is blocked through Apple's XProtect anti-malware feature.
Java has come under fire as the means by which hackers have been able to gain control of computers. In April 2012 more than 600,000 Macs were reported to have been infected with a Flashback Trojan horse that was being installed on people's computers with the help of Java exploits. Then in August Macs were again at risk due to a flaw in Java, this time around, there was good news for Mac users: Thanks to changes Apple has made, most of us were safe from the threat.
Unwilling to leave its customers open to potential threats Apple has apparently decided it's safer to block Java entirely.
Macs running OS X Snow Leopard and beyond are affected.

  • Adobe PDF Plugin not working FireFox and SeaMonkey

Just updated to Acrobat XI. I find that the plugin to view PDF's doesn't work. just receive a Blank Screen when I try to view a Plugin.
I also notice in addons  when you go to plugins it shows two acrobat Pdf Plugins:
    Adobe Acrobat NPAI Plugin
    Adobe AAMDetect Adobe AAMDetect 1.0.0.0
and the one called 1.0  I have no idea what that is.
I see no sign of the Adobe PDF Plugin (which is in the Internet Plugins Folder)
I can use a Plugin from Schubert from Germany but it doesn't work with buttons to swich to a web page.
I can use Acrobat Reader. However in order to work it has to download the page from a website first. Who wants to do that.
    Can't you get this fixed???

Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plugin is not supported in Firefox or SeaMonkey. Try disabling this plug-in from Firefox/SeaMonkey > Tools > Add-ons, then quit and restart your brwosers.
This should let you save/downlaod the PDFs locally.

  • JQuery Drag and Drop Plugin Not Working on Safari 7.0

I have a website that uses jQuery Drag and Drop and it is working on Safari 6.0.5, Chrome, and Firefox, but it doesn't work on Safari 7. Any ideas why this would be?
In genearl Safari has a lot of CSS and Javascript issues. If there is a place that list all of these issues and solutions I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

    More information would be great.
What type of site is it?  WordPress?  Joomla or Drupal?
What drag and drop theme or framwork are you using?
What version of software and theme, what type of hosting, what version of PHP and mySQL?
I'm having similar issues but details such as these will go a long way to grouping symptoms and getting to the bottom of the problem(s).
One thing I've noted is that in most cases everything is actually working.  It's just taking an unbelievably long time.  jQuery isn't the problem either.  It seems more closely related to the quantity of available tasks on a given page.
There are forum posts for v7 that say Safari isn't compatible with WordPress for example.  It is compatible and works just fine, but if you're running the latest version of Catalist Theme and their Dynamic Site Builder you can't do anything with Dynamic admin because all its options are on a single page which appears to be too much for Safari 7 to handle for some reason.  Folks are having similar problems with Genesis, Headway Theme, Pagelines and many others.

  • PDF view not working in Safari

When I try and open a PDF from a web site in Safari, I get a black screen. Seems like the Adobe plug in is not working. What can I do?

Mavericks has implemented some new sceurity measures. When I open a PDF from a website I have not makred as trusted I get the black screen you describe but there's also a box to click to activate the Adobe plugin. If I click that option I then get a dialog window asking me if I "trust" the website. Clicking the Trust option then opens the PDF in my browser window. Once you have "trusted" a website you can open PDFs on that site without going through the above options. You can override this security by going to Safari preferences and clicking the Security tab, then the Manage Website Settings option. There you can turn off this security measure and allow all sites to use the Adobe Reader plugin. Or you can set specific sites to allow or block the plugin.
Also make sure you have the latest Adobe plugin installed on your system.

  • PDF links not working in Safari?

I'm noticing that links in PDFs (made with Acrobat 9) are not accessible when viewing the PDF in Safari (although they do work in iBooks). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't beleive Safari for iOS opens PDF documents natively. You may need a reader, such as Goodreader to open them.
Correction - it does open the PDFs in the browser (but gives a choice of otherapps). My mistake

  • Help! InDesign interactive PDF buttons not working in Safari or on iPad

I made an infographic in Indesign for our university magazine with a QR code to link to an interactive pdf. Nothing too complicated animation wise, simply buttons that you can click on to view different parts of the graphic. However, the buttons are not working at all in Safari and on the iPhone and iPad, the buttons disapear completley. Please help.

    Thanks,
    Gretchen

Whether buttons work correctly in a PDF file depend entirely on what PDF reader you're using. Here are a couple of important facts:
    * While corrected created interactive PDFs will display correctly in the FREE Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, they probably won't display correctly in Apple's Preview application which is probably what you're viewing in Safari.
    * None of the PDF readers currently available on an iPad (e.g., iBooks, GoodReader, etc.) correctly handle interactivity like buttons on an iPad.

  • Hit highlighting (PDF) is not working with Safari

We have been facing a weird problem with PDF documents displayed in Safari. This problem is reproducible in many of our machines. The problem is like this..
Adobe Reader has support for hit highlighting in PDF documents when it is being viewed in any browser. For example,
    http://www.mysite.com/myfile.pdf#xml=http://www.somesite.com/words.txt
This URL should highlight the words specified in words.txt file. But, unfortunately many of our Safari browsers (on Windows machines) don't highlight any text in opened pdf file. The same URL works fine in rest of the browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome). I could not figure out where the problem is!
Can anybody please help me on this?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Hyperlinks within .pdf documents not working IMac Safari

I am working with a website that displays several .pdf documents. The documents contain hyperlinks to urls. Everything works fine in other browsers, but in Safari, these hyperlinks do not work. The cursor does not change when it enters the hyperlink space, and nothing happens if the link is clicked. I am using an IMac running OS 10.6. 8 and Safari 5.1.10. I have tried both the native (Preview) option and a plug-in. Neither makes any difference. Can anyone suggest a fix other than abandoning Safari?

  • Imbedded link to downloadable .PDF file not working in Safari

    Two questions:
I imbedded a text link that is supposed to download a .PDF file from my iDisk. However, when I click the text link from my Safari browser I get this error message:
"“A network error occurred while accessing this document on the Internet. Would you like to close the document or reload it?”
When I retry by pasting my iWeb published page into Mozilla, the linked file downloads quickly with no problem. However, when I paste it into Internet Explorer's browser, it takes about 4 minutes to download!
Second question: I can't seem to link an image that I inserted on a "My Photos" template page. There is no way to select the image--when I do, it just shows the "blue box" around the image but it doesn't actually select the image itself so I can link it.
I was able to link images in my .Mac pages so I don't know why I can't on iWeb.
If anyone wants to try it, here is the link to that page. ONLY CLICK ON THE BERMUDA AMEX TRAVEL PLANNER TEXT as that is the only link I've imbedded thus far. This page is obviously still under construction.

This is correct, you cannot make the image holders hyperlinks. The solution is to put a Shape over the top of the image that you want to be a link, then Opn Inspector, Graphic Link and make the Opacity 1%, no more no less. Then make this shape a link. Beware that this image will still display in a slideshow and if you insert more images and it moves, the shape will not move with it.
You may also want to click on the shape and then go Arrange > Bring to Front.

  • PDFs won't work in Safari

This week I leveled my harddrive and reinstalled OSX.
I have done all the updates.
When I try and look at a PDF in safari I get a rotating 'loading wheel' the an open dialouge asks me what application to open the PDF with, but Preview is greyed out.
    Any ideas?

Its ok restarting Safari sorted it out for some reason.

  • When will Firefox update the pdf plugin for version 4? This is a major technical oversight which required me to downgrade back to 3.

The PDF plugin which worked great prior to v 4 of FF needs to be updated. I am sure people are aware of this but doesn't seem to be any comments on when this can be resolved.

I don't think you will see that in Firefox 5.
There has been an enhancement request for this since 2006, it has received some attention earlier this year but there is no sign of it being implemented just yet.

  • Frustration with Safari pdf plugins

I've tried both Shubert and Adobe Reader PDF plugins and find they are both terrible. What I find most annoying is that I can't seem to accurately control scolling. The slightist slide of my finger seems to send the document jumping, often pages at a time.
Any thoughts? At this point, I'm tempted just to uninstall the Reader plugin and just use PDF PenPro.
    Thanks

    Preview works fine for me.
I used to use PDF pen pro, and at one time I've tried all the PDF addon things, but I haven't bothered with them in a while. Preview does a good job of annotating pdfs these days.
I'm an apple fundamentalist. If there's some PDF function I can't do natively with Safari and Preview, I probably don't need it in the first place.
