PDFs turn invisible when saved to server

Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I save a pdf to our server (using either smb or cifs protocol) the file becomes invisible.  I can save to the desktop and copy to the server, but not save directly to the server. Also, single page pdfs stay visible. It is only multi-page pdfs that turn invisible.  Any ideas on a fix?

This solved my questionRe: Yahoo Mail folder behaviour with Apple Mail 5.0
Dec 8, 2011 5:14 PM (in response to ernestobenedict)
I finally figured out how to fix this; under the mailbox menu there is an option to "use this mailbox for" that allowed me to select the Sent Items folder from my Yahoo IMAP list of folders and make it the default for sent items from the Mac OS X mail software! "
Thanks to ernestobenedict for this solution!!!

  • Images turn greyscale when saving Postscript/PDF or Print Preview but text remains in colour?

It is in colour, until I turn on Overprint preview, or try to save the booklet as a Postscript or PDF file.
In print preview or when doing any of the above things, it goes to greyscale but the text and rectangles remain in colour?
The images have been placed from Photoshop as eps files and were duatone in PS.
    Please help.

As both the engineering resource at Adobe most involved with end-to-end PDF print publishing workflows and having served at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last year as an Industry Research Professor teaching students about modern, reliable workflows as well as variable data publishing with PDF, I find this thread fascinating.
Obviously, you can force fit PostScript for output, albeit very inconveniently and with the possibility of problems and artifacts due to the device-dependent nature of PostScript (along with flattened transparency, lack of ICC color management, and inconsistencies in spot color handling).
However, unless the university assignment was specifically to demonstrate to you how difficult and problematic PostScript-based workflows were over a dozen years ago, I am absolutely appalled that any accredited university or professional school program in design / graphic arts / publishing / printing would have you use PostScript workflows in any way.
Other than hacking around with the possibility of doing output that varies based on external variables as the job is being RIPed, I know of absolutely no advantages of PostScript over PDF in this arena and obviously a boatload of disadvantages.
As I have written many times in the past, I wouldn't advocate that publishers with extensive collections of EPS-based content do wholesale conversions of same, but for new content or when content needs revision, PDF is definitely the replacement for EPS or PostScript in any flavor.

  • Opening PDF in Browser when running in Server 2008 R2 RemoteApp (Terminal Services)

We are running a RemoteApp server that allows users to access an intranet page, through this can can click and open a number of PDF documents.
When connecting and running locally (RDP) the PDFs open in the browser as required, but when running through remoteApp its forcing the PDF to open into Adobe Reader.
Im getting this on all versions of IE 9-11 and Reader 9-11, ive enabled view in PDF and also the IE add-ons but it still forces the file to open in the full application.
Group polciy isnt an issue as Ive tested this on a live users, and also a clean slate test account. Ive even moved the RemoteApp server out of the domain and tried as a local system (with local accounts) and the same behaviour happens.
This is the same if I try and open PDF documents from the internet.
    Any Advice would be good
    Steve.

    Hi Uber,
This is a known issue that error occurs when running report "Count of instances of specific software registered with Add or Remove Programs" due to non-printable characters for XML. Based on internal research, the hotfix for this issue will be
included in the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1.
As a workaround, you can remove the nonprintable character populated into the report parameter by referring to the following KB article:

    Hope this helps.

  • All browser chrome (tab switcher, awesomebar, toolbars) sometimes turn invisible when window is inactive

All the browser chrome including the tab switcher, awesomebar, firefox menu, and toolbars, but not the standard minimize/unmaximize/close buttons, will sometimes turn invisible while the window is inactive.
Clicking back into the window restores them. I have a dual monitor setup, and firefox is maximized on one monitor while I'm working on other applications in the other.
This is an intermittent problem, and has been happening for about a week now, starting from a fresh install of Firefox with a clean profile.

  • Preview increases pdf file size when saving

When I save a PDF journal article using Preview, it often increases the file size by 2x - 4x, regardless of whether I have added annotations. In the attached image, you can see I downloaded a journal article (2.3 MB), opened it in Preview, duplicated and saved it and the resulting copied file was 6.1 MB.
This is a problem because I it signifiantly increases the size of my synced reference library. It is worse with larger files (25 MB eBooks that increase to 80 MB).
Can anyone help me find a way to annotate a journal article and preserve the original file size? I have tried Adobe Reader (awful and buggy interface, but preserves the original size!), and several other PDF apps (e.g. Skim) seem to rely on Apple's PDF engine where the file results in a larger size as well. Using Quartz filters to reduce file size within Preview is not effective. I'm happy to purchase a program if it works well.

I have also experienced this issue.    My PDF file of 300MB increased to over 900MB when I simply put one straight line annotation onto it.     Effectively this made the PDF unusable since it is now very slow to open and it is too large to transfer onto my iPad.     I've experienced this multiple times with a variety of PDF files, and so now simply avoid changing them in any way in Preview.   I have written to Apple via apple.com/feedback and have talked to Apple store 'Geniuses' about this.   Apparently it is a known issue, but there was no promise of a resolution.    I love the way Preview opens quickly and displays files and also allows beautiful, smooth scrolling of PDFs.     It's a pity that there's this enormous problem with annotating.     If anyone knows of a solution, it would be great to hear.     I've tried other PDF programmes such as Adobe for Mac, but wasn't too impressed.

    Hi Peggy,
This is a known bug in AC 5.3 SP6. SAP has added fields for administrator email address, application URL and redirection URL. Even though application URL and redirection URL do not show up as manadatory fields but they are required to save the configuration. To get pass through this error, just provide anything in those 2 textboxes with some dummy email address in administrator email address textbox. You should be able to save it now.
This is being fixed in SP7 which should release somewhere around end of March.

  • Odd program crash when saving on server.

When I go to save and I click on the drown down bar to select my recent places, etc., the program crashes. This only happens when the location is on our server. I can save to the server just fine, but if I click on the drop down tab, it never drops down then the program crashes. If my location is on the HD, it works just fine. This happens with any program.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hi Vondy, try this...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move this file to the Desktop & reboot.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1, and reboot.

  • Adobe freezes up saving to server.

Why does any version of Adobe Creative suite freeze when saving to server for just one user? I can login as myself, admin or another user and it works fine. I can even safe to the desktop with the user but not to the server. BUT let me go further....it actually saves to the server. What happens is when you save as to the server (anywhere) it starts the spinning beach ball and freezes. When you try to force quit the whole system locks up. Tried to repair permissions, tried making user an admin and still nothing.
    Any ideas?

That was the problem.  I copied the disc to a stick on my other computer and loaded it on to the desktop of my Windows 7 machine and it works fine.  Now I will have to investigate what is wrong with the drive.  Thanks

  • Safari freezes when saving to PDF

    Hi Folks
Well... Safari doesn't freeze when saving a web document to PDF, but somehow, it gets stuck for many seconds and later it pop ups a banner which says that it can't connect with Server "Martin" (me, which I guess is the name given to the MacPro).
So I'm using the MBP as "Desktop Computer" and conneted via FireWire to the MacPro. The weird thing is that I already unmounted the disks, unpluged the FireWire cable and turned off the MacPro, but the MBP still looking for the named server.
I think that's because some sharing configurations, but I'm not sharing the Printer (I don't have one, so discard that ).
So well... this issue is pretty annoying because I have to save as PDF many web documents and the "thinking" time of the computer by looking for that server is a big waste of time.
    Can anybody help me here?
    Thanks a lot!
    Ø3
    PS:
Here is a pic if needed:

Hey Linc it happens when I click on the PDF button. After a while, the pull down menu appears with the respective options, so it happens before the process of saving the file (selecting file type, folder, etc, and save).
Hope this helps you to find something. I have not tried deleting the MacPro from the Sharing Propierties in the MBP and see if the MBP keeps seeking for that server. Will try that later and update here.
Thanks for taking the time, man!

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

  • Saving a Word document to pdf - dropping letters when printed

I have a client that is saving a document created in Microsoft Word 2007 as a PDF file. After saving the PDF file they are distributing the PDF to their staff as well as users outside of the office. When the PDF file is printed the printed copy is missing a combination of letters, such as "ie" or "ti" or "li" etc. The user herself has printed the PDF file from both her work PC and her home PC with the same results.
Adobe Reader 9 (v9.3.0.148) in a terminal server environment (Windows Server 2008SP2)
Microsoft Office 2007 all updates installed.
Anyone have any ideas, I have tried most of the fixes that I found from others but noting that keeps permanently.
    Thanks, Joe.

Not Reader causing it. It's how the PDF was created. Your samples are all what are called ligatures and the font information for those ligatures are not being embedded in the PDF when it is created. You would need to ask Microsoft how to do that if you are using their product to create the PDF.

  • Gaps in-between  livepaint shapes when saving to PDF

Im using CS6 and when saving to PDF my live paint objects have a slight gap inbetween the shapes in the live paint object. They do not appeare in the illustrator file or when saved as jpeg, png, etc only PDFs. I have been using Illustrator for a couple years now and this has not happened in previous versions I've worked with (CS3, 4, and 5)
    Thanks

The thin lines around the rings are an artifact in pdf preview. Thi si the saem problem  http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/thin-white-dark-lines-stitching.html
You may be able get rid of them by changing your acrobat settings such as turn off smooth line art.

  • Swf saved as pdf not displaying when opened

    Hi All,
I am in the process of creating a media kit for my company.  The plan is to be able to send out a link to the pdf file saved in our site files so that potential clients can click and view or download the pdf.  I have saved the pdf in my site files however; when you go to the link (http://www.hobnobtv.com/pdf/hobnobtv-media-kit.pdf) it only opens a white blank pdf file.
Here are the steps i've taken to create the file:
I have created the 10page booklet using InDesign CS4 and added the page turn page transition on all the pages.
I exported the file as swf and then opened the swf in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
When opening the swf in Acrobat the activation setting I choose are:
Enable when: The page containing the content is opened
Disable when: The page containing the content is closed
    Save the pdf file
    Uploaded to the site
What could be causing the pdf to appear white and blank?  Is there a better way to accomplish the goal?
I look forward to hearing others thoughts!
    Rebecca

    Thank you for the response!
Actually, I finally realized (and i'm a little embarassed to admit) that when I click on the link for the pdf, my default program to open the file was set to Preview rather than adobe acrobat or reader.  So now that I have it set to Acrobat I see it ok.
I have tested the swf file by itself and it does work.  The file uses the Page Turn transition affect, so the user needs to click the bottom right corner of each page to turn (or they can click and drag the page open).  I did notice when the pdf was opend the little note I included in the bottom right of the first page does not show (it reads "click here to turn page"- as a prompt for the user).  I may have to move that up a little bit so it shows.  Also, if you hover over the bottom right corner of the right page, you should start to see the page corner curl, this is hard to see at this point (you can see it great if you click the zoom in option once) Maybe i'll have to reduce the size of the swf when making it a pdf to see if that works so the user doesn't have to adjust the page to see the affect.
    I'll see how that works.

  • Webi Reports - Stale data when saved a pdf/xls

Hi Webi Guru's - we have a peculiar issue in our BOBJ Production system.
To give you a bit of background on our production system - is hosted on
    O/S - EL 2.6
    Database - Oracle 11g
    IE version - 9
2 Tomcat 6 servers, load balanced using F5 load balancer
3 CMC cluster servers and 1 Oracle Database server
    CMC has BW 731 authentication
    Problem Description -
Open any WEBI report. Pass a set of parameters. Most of the reports have from and todate as input parameters.
On the first attempt we pass the fromdate = 5th May 2014, todate = 10th May 2014. Save the report as pdf/xls file. Saves with the correct data.
Refresh the webi report - provide different set of date range as, fromdate = 12th May 2014, todate = 20th May 2014. Save the report as pdf/xls file. This time though the report brings out correct data set, when saved as a pdf/xls file, saves with data from date range that was passed the first time which was  fromdate = 5th May 2014, todate = 10th May 2014
Have checked with our network team regarding if caching is enabled on tge F5 loadbalancer - an there is none.
I did raise a incident with SAP support and it was closed down saying it is a third party issue at the load balancer level and recomended that I could check with the SCN community..
Has anyone in the BI/BOcommumity come across this sort of problem before where you you have split installations and your web server is load balanced.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Savitha

Hi Amit - thanks for your reply.
If we run the reports directly from both the Web/Tomcat server - we get the correct result set saved in the PDF/XLS file. But it is not the case when we access the reports from the Load balanced URL. When we went live initially we had only one tomcat server, due to performanance issues we added additional tomcat server and since then we are noticing this issue.
The immediate thing that came to our mind was - if there was a caching option enabled at the load balancer level. The network team have confirmed that it is not the case.
We have enabled HTTPWatch to see if there was anything obvious we could spot - but there is nothing from the logs  which stands out either.
The issue is only when we save the reports as in PDF/XLS format - saves the data with prompts from the previous refresh.
    Hope it all makes sense.
    Thanks
    Savitha
