  • Can I create PDF/X-1a:2001 with AI CS4?

    We are a print shop making files for printing as follows:
    1. create file in Illustrator CS3
    2. embed artwork and outline type
    3. save as PDF/X-1a:2001
    4. open resulting PDF in CorelDraw X3
    5. check separations, etc.
    6. print to plates or email files to off-site printers
    As far as I know, this works perfectly well BUT when I upgraded to Illustrator CS4 and tried to open the PDF in CorelDraw, I got a "File is corrupted" message.Should we use a different PDF preset? In the AI CS4 Help section "Adobe PDF presets" there is a note saying: "The PDF/X1-a:2003 and PDF/X-3 (2003) presets are placed on your computer during installation but are not available until you move them from the Extras folder to the Settings folder." Where are these folders? I can't find them in the program files.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Try this path: Startup Disk (your working system) - Library - Application Support - Adobe - Adobe PDF. Inside this folder you will find an folder »Extras« and also »Settings«. Maybe if you copy the jobotions into the other folder it will work. Good luck!

  • How distill a file to strictly PDF/A‑1a:2001 using Acrobat XI? Is that possible at all?

    How to distill a MS WORD file to strictly PDF/A‑1a:2001 by using Acrobat XI? Is that possible at all?

    It is Amazing because in the Product description to the buyer as you learn from this discussion and see the links it is not absolutley explicit. There is the Product page for standard on:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatstandard.html
    there you find the option "more..." under "top features" for Adobe Acrobat Standard, you click and com to:
    Features | Adobe Acrobat XI Standard
    Then down there you see as top feature:
    "http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/iso-pdf-x-32000-standards.htmlhttp://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/iso-pdf-x-32000-standards.htmlIMPROVED  Conform to ISO PDF standards
    Create PDF documents that comply with standards managed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)."
    and with a image that shows that the product includes both PDF/A and PDF/X.
    Even if you follow this link further to:
    PDF ISO 32000, PDF/X, PDF archive | Adobe Acrobat XI
    The URL indeed says "acrobatstandard" and the page does not distinguish.
    Only the section:
    "Get help creating accessible PDF files/ Simplify the creation and verification of PDFs that need to conform to accessibility standards for people with disabilities. The Make Accessible guided Action* will help you every step of the way."
    is explicitly with anasterix footnoted and is distinguished. It makes clear to buyer that "PDF/X and PDF/A are part of the Standard version", I would say.
    I would say as a buyer of the Standard version under these conditions of product description it is normal to believe that two of the most basic "standards" are in the "Standard" version included PDF/X and PDF/A, otherwise Adobe would Asterix and footnote it at least or be more explicit and not mention it as Improvement a.s.f. Another interpretation would be to get the buyer first buying without very explict information the Standard version and then making him over days of trial and questions in a forum where people have also similar problems: Aha!! it is not included. "Upgarde it! and pay us more!"
    This is amazing, Gilad.

  • Save as PDF with [PDF/X-1a:2001] preset not flattening issue

    Hi all,
    I have a document with some transparency so I want to flatten it while saving to a PDF. In the UI, if I save it using [PDF/X-1a:2001] preset, it's perfeclty flattened.
    But if I order the same operation through scripting, it doesn't. What am I doing wrong, it makes me crazy !
    var doc=app.activeDocument;
    var pdfSaveOptions = new PDFSaveOptions();
    pdfSaveOptions.pDFPreset="[PDF/X-1a:2001]";
    var pdfFile = new File(Folder.desktop + "/testIllu4.pdf");
    doc.saveAs(pdfFile, pdfSaveOptions);
    TIA.
    Loic

    Hi Larry,
    Just tried your function and indeed if I have a specific preset, it works. I hoped I could just set the PDF options without calling a preset.
    I just looked and it seems like impossible to add a preset into Illustrator
    That's really tough.
    Thanks a lot anyway for helping.
    Loic
    Edit : FINALLY, I could get it. I suspected something when I saw into Acrobat that the file didn't contain transparency but was indeed transparent into Illustrator. I forgot to deactivate the editability. And that was all !
    var doc=app.activeDocument;
    var pdfSaveOptions = new PDFSaveOptions();
    pdfSaveOptions.pDFXStandard=PDFXStandard.PDFX1A2001;
    pdfSaveOptions.compatibility = PDFCompatibility.ACROBAT4;
    pdfSaveOptions.preserveEditability = false;
    var pdfFile = new File(Folder.desktop + "/test.pdf");
    doc.saveAs(pdfFile, pdfSaveOptions);

  • In design to pdf/x-1a:2001 embedded fonts

    Hello Everyone,
    I was asked by a printed to export my cs2 indesign file as a pdf/x-1a:2001 file with embedded fonts. The document just came back stating that the font on page 27 is not embedded. The same font is used through out the document. When I double check the font settings in the preflight dialogue box everything looks good. Is there a way to make sure or manually embed fonts?
    Thanks!
    H

    Adobe Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM are substitution fonts used by Adobe applications to display sans serif and serif text respectively when a font is missing. It is most commonly used by Adobe Reader and Acrobat. Adobe content creation applications (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) do not allow you to create content using those fonts. The names not made available on any list for you to choose from. The only time you typically see those font names is if you created a PDF file and one or more of the fonts could not be embedded or were not requested to be embedded and when that PDF file is displayed, the non-embedded fonts are not on the system of the viewer. Thus, the CTRL-D Fonts function in Acrobat or Reader might show that let's say font Inebriated Oblique is not embedded and that font used for its display is Adobe Sans.
    I assume what you are seeing is not the font used for display, but rather, the "missing font" ... correct?
    There are some very unusual situations in which somehow text content in a PDF file looks like it was formatted in either Adobe Sans or Adobe Serif. This may be the result of what is called refrying a PDF file. Refrying is the process in which a PDF file is printed to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance and the result is another PDF file after the PostScript is distilled. Such refry operations are strongly discouraged by Adobe given that the PostScript generated by Adobe Acrobat is optimized for PostScript printers, not for creation of PDF, and some anomalies, such as calls for Adobe Sans or Adobe Serif may result.
    My best guess is that your original InDesign document has one or more placed PDF files in it that are either missing embedded fonts and are calling for Adobe Sans. Check out each placed PDF file individually and make sure that none are missing embedded fonts and/or refer to Adobe Sans (or Adobe Serif).

  • How do I get Illustrator to save out flat PDF/X-1a:2001 files again?

    Suddenly when I save out a PDF/X-1a:2001 Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) it remains layered and keeps fonts editable. It no longer flattens the file. No other Acrobat version that I select flattens a file either. I'm on a PC with Illustrator CC 2014. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

    Follow up. Previous to last week, when I saved or exported with the PDF/X-1a:2001 Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) preset, it saved as a nice press-ready file I could submit to print vendors -- small and non-editable: fonts outlined, images compressed, the whole deal. (It was a printer who recommended the process.) When saving in this format the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" is grayed out. It's not an option. My understanding was that, by nature, a PDF/X-1a:2001 Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) file is not editable. When I reopened the PDFs in Illustrator, they weren't editable. Graphics/text were one big... piece.
    After >3.5 hours of Adobe Support yesterday renaming AppData files, uninstalling Illustrator, reinstalling, testing PDF formats, etc. -- the Adobe team concluded that saving in this preset PDF format remains editable when the file is reopened in Illustrator. Text will remain live. (Bless both Support techs for working on this. I hope the rest of their day went better!)
    It is unlikely that I am the sole Illustrator user able to accomplish something that today is impossible. Even PDFs I'd saved two years ago (put "uneditible" in their file names), when opened in Illustrator CC, now have live text. This leads me to think that something on Adobe's back-end programming changed.
    Yes, there are multiple ways to output high resolution files; and yes, not everyone prefers to do so in Illustrator. But I do. I love that I can illustrate and lay out in one place. I'll still output files, but do so differently. I'm moving on. Still, I am curious.

  • Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001/2003/2008 and International Guidelines

    Hi all,
    First of all, forgive me for any incompetence - I'm extremely new to the world of graphic design and print compatibility.
    System information:
    64-bit Windows 7 running Adobe Illustrator CS6 version 16.1.1 (64-bit)
    I am currently formatting our business cards in AI. They are being submitted to a print company in the UK. The print company has requested the PDFs to be in the format PDF/X-1a:2008 for the highest quality. However, I only have the option for PDF/X-1a:2001 or 2003. I have Googled this extensively and a hint came when Google said "Search only pages in the UK?"
    This leads me to the following questions:
    1. Does this 2008 standard exist, or did my contact at the company simply make a typing error? (It is my understanding that 2001 and 2003 are very similar standards, with the exception that 2003 is more broadly supported and overcomes compatibility issues)
    2. Is this ISO standard only in the UK? Is it possible I can't find information on it because of my current country setting (Canada) and because I have a North American version of the Adobe Suite (if such a thing exists) that does not offer this standard?
    3. If yes, is there any conversion software out there, or an add-on pack I can install, to ensure our PDFs are compliant?
    Thank you in advance for all your help with this matter.

    There is NO SUCH THING as PDF/X-1a:2008.  The last version of PDF/X-1a was in 2003, however no one uses that - everyone uses the 2001 version.
    There is, however, a PDF/X-4 standard that is from 2008 - however it was replaced with a updated in 2010 and no one uses the 2008 version.
    So you really need to go back to the printer ask them what they really mean.

  • Converting .ps file to PDF/X-1a:2001 format

    Can I convert .ps files to the PDF/X-1a:2001 format that is required by a widely used book printer?

    Hi Tom,
    I'm sorry for the delayed reponse. Acrobat.com is certainly capable of converting .ps (Adobe PostScript) files to PDF; for a complete list of supported filetypes, please refer to this page: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/524/cpsid_52456.html#Create%20PDF
    The Create PDF service offered at Acrobat.com is available in two capacities: with a free Acrobat.com account, you may convert up to 5 files to PDF; for unlimited PDF conversions, you would wamt to subscribe for a monthly rate of either $14.99 or $39.00, depending on which other features of Acrobat.com you would want to take advantage of (e.g. an online meeting space in ConnectNow with a capacity of 5 or 20 participants; the free account allows you to invite two additional people to your meeting room).
    For more information on Acrobat.com's features and capabilities, see this page: https://acrobat.com/features_online_workspaces.html
    I hope this helps clarify the issue. Please let me know if I misunderstood your question or if you need more information.
    Best,
    Rebecca

  • Creating PDF/X-1a:2001 with Acrobat Pro 9

    My printer demands that files be submitted in PDF/X
    -1a:2001 and suggests that postscript files be created first than run through Distiller. My document was not created with InDesign or another Adobe product but I can output a .ps file. Should that be PostScript level 1, 2 or 3 or does it matter? Is Distiller Part of Acrobat Pro 9? Will Acrobat embed fonts and convert images to CMYK? And of course, can PDF/X-1a:2001 be selected as the output format?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    I should have taken a look at Scribus before responding—Scribus does not interact with Acrobat like other programs I use do. My experience primarily involves other Adobe products like InDesign and Illustrator and Microsoft products like the Office suite, Visio and CorelDraw.
    I downloaded and tested Scribus today and found that my fonts were being converted to outlines in Scribus instead of being preserved as embedded fonts. As you suggested, the resulting pdf page became an image instead of a combination of image and text and there does not seem to be a way to override this behavior (at least for the fonts I tested). The answer may be painfully obvious to Scribus pros out there, but I am stumped unless the font's license prevents embedding. For the "rely on system fonts" setting, you would almost always leave it checked. When creating a pdf, hover your cursor over the option and a description will pop up that may be helpful.
    It seems like there is some confusion regarding spot and process colors. All of my needs except for certain runs of business cards would best be served with process colors instead of spot colors. Scribus has a wiki page on spot colors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spot_color) and About.com has a page that may also be helpful (http://desktoppub.about.com/od/colorprinting/a/spotprocesswhen.htm). RGB is a color model for electronic devices, not for printers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rgb)—what you see on your screen may or may not be close to what you would see on paper. Another color consideration would be the type of paper you will be using. There could be significant differences in color appearance when printed on coated versus matte stock, etc.
    I do not have a printer here now to test how my example document pdf actually looks when printed on paper. The on-screen quality did not appear to be top quality, though I have a lot to learn about the available Scribus settings. I did change the default resolutions from screen to printer quality.
    Once you have your colors worked out and just to add another pdf option into the mix: you could use Scribus' export to an eps file. After the file is created, you could right click and choose "Convert to AdobePDF". With the pdf open in Acrobat go to Advanced > Preflight > Standards > PDF/X-1a:2001 (check Apply Corrections) and save.

  • Editable pdf needs to be saved as a pdf x1/2001

    Hi,
    I made a pdf with editable fields so client could update the text and then save it as a pdf from Adobe Reader for the printers.  Things were working out fine they could edit, save and print the files themselves, but then we ran into problems when they tried to send the file to the printers.
    The printers are using a system called Dalim Twist and they say they want the files saved as a PDF version x1/2001 which Adobe Reader 8 or 9 doesn't save that legacy version.  Is there a software that will save an editable PDF as a PDF version X1/2001?
    I tried opening the file in Adobe Acrobat 9.2 and saving it, but it won't let me save a pdf X1/2001 because it has editable fields and version X1/2001 doesn't support editable fields.  Is there a way of collapsing or flattening the editable file so it can be save it as a pdf X1/2001, because after the client edits the file the printer doesn't need to edit the file so it doesn't matter if the editing capability is gone.
    If there's anyone out there with a solution, your awesome!
    Thanks,
    Mya

    In Adobe Acrobat Pro you can use the Preflight Tool to flatten the documents.

  • Photoshop to pdf via distiller help please?

    I'm trying to convert a photoshop cs4 file to pdf using distiller. When I save as an EPS file, then run it through distiller I get this error:

    I tried printing to Adobe PDF in photoshop, and that seems to work but the fonts don't embed, and the publisher requires a distiller produced file.
    I could swear that when I did a test on an earlier version of the file it worked just fine, but have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it to work now. Perhaps I messed up a setting somewhere or missed a step? I'm new at this so that's entirely possible. Thanks for helping!

    I see the issue you are having. A publisher would likely want you to use either the print or press settings file, or supply you one to use. I use one developed by IEEE for their publications. With where you are, if the PDF that you save from PhotoShop is what you are looking for, simply print that one to the Adobe PDF printer and create a new PDF. The fonts should be embedded. It is not clear if the fonts are just not embedded when you print from PhotoShop or they do not come through as fonts (but are simply graphics of the fonts). If they are fonts but just did not embed, then go back and try using the print or press settings. If needed, enter the options for the settings file and be sure that the fonts are set to always embed (and likely as subset fonts). If any fonts are not embedded, change that setting. In my AA7, the standard settings exclude a lot of fonts that are characteristic of Adobe. Those fonts are both embedded in the Press and Print options.
    Don't know if I have helped, but it basically what you seem to need. I have given two options that may meet your needs. Bill

    I don’t even know how to make such a problematic pdf, so I can’t do any meaningful tests regarding this; could You post the file in question?
    If You have Acrobat Professional installed You could create a Fixup to remove the PDF/X-entry and see if the file converts OK then.
    Or You might be able to convert it to a PDF/X-standard correctly in Acrobat.

  • Problem with text frame dropshadow not completely printing to pdf file.

    Hi and thanks for your speedy replies!
    I am editing a file that had altered corner text frames with a .25 inset and a drop shadow added, .05 stroke and paper swatch. When I deleted text everything shifted so I had to recreate the special frames on select pages. These new text frames are not showing the top and left sides of the frames when saved to pdf file. The right and bottom drop shadow are showing.  What am I missing?
    Cheers!

    I am using the latest version in CC. I tried several exports directly from ID, PDF/X-3:2002, PDF/X-1a:2001 and the low res setting, all with no changes.  None showed the left or top border on the frames in question.
    So I was getting the first screen shot instead of the second which other similarly formatted frames showed.  I checked every setting I could find and they were all the same.  The problem just occurred after the point in the doc that I had made changes resulting in some pages being deleted and the page formatting being thrown off which I corrected with the appropriate saved page formats.  But when I went to set up the frame dropshadow and accompanying stroke and swatches, the outline just would not show in the pdf although it appeared to be showing in ID.
    I've since discovered a work around for the editing so no pages were deleted, but I need to figure out why this happened and what I am not seeing. Perhaps a setting to show the border? Or maybe it is some overall setting that I need to be looking for? Just weird, weird, weird...

  • PDF form created from excel is missing fields when copied into word ... sometimes but not others...

    Hello,
    As part of my dissertation project I have created countless tables in excel.  Using the Save as PDF feature on Mac Office Word 2011 I created that tables as PDF's which I dropped into my word document and Cropped them down to size.
    For some reason, when I open the word document on the PC, some of the info in the tables is randomly gone.  Also, when we send the word file (with embeded PDF's) to a journal for publication they try to combine all the files as a PDF and the tables again lose data.
    1) Why is this happening?
    2) I also noticed that in Mac Word 2011 I had an option to "Save as Adobe PDF". when I select this option I am given several other options (see below) for the type of PDF that will be created.  Which of these options would be ideal to overcome the problem listed above.
    high quality print
    oversized pages
    PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK)
    PDF/A-1b:2005 (RBG)
    PDF/X-1a:2001
    PDF/X-3:2002
    Smallest File Size
    Standard
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hmm -- one of my customers is a turkish building company
    (Kusadasi BTW), and when *they* add some contents to the DB,
    they´ll be entering turkish chars. It´s in particular the
    turkish "I" which is pretty different, and this is when a search
    for keywords containing a western "I" will fail.
    Could that be the problem in your case ?

  • Hairline white line around images in PDF for press

    CS3, Windows XP
    I searched the forum and didn't find this exact question, so..., I place PSD file in ID. When I export to PDF for the press run, I get a thin hairline white box around the photo. It only seems to happen when the placed image is over a gradient. It also only happens on PDF files for press run - either Press Quality or PDF/X-1a:2001. When I export to "Smallest File Size" it looks fine. I have the border of the image set to 0 and the color to None.
    And it only seems to happen sometimes. A month or so ago I created a similar piece using different photos, but the same gradient background and it looked and printed fine.
    Thoughts?
    JAG

    The stitching and a grey box was showing up on my press proofs. The printer suggested that I flatten the image before I send it to them.
    Sometimes I see in on screen and sometimes I don't, but my printer says they see it every time and that it will show up on the proof. I've been trying several different PDF exporting options in ID. We are getting the proofs done correctly, but there's only one guy at my printer that can get the file corrected. I'm not sure exactly what he is doing, but one of the people I deal with suggested that he was opening the file in PS, flattening it again, and exporting to PDF, again.
    He's the boss and not alway around, so I'm trying to figure out how I can get file exported correctly.
    Thanks for your help.
