PE 7: Media offline and Crashing

My Adobe Elements 7 has been acting up a lot lately. Sometimes when I load up my videos and add it, the music will play but my video will freeze and I will have to restart it. Another problem has been the media offline screen. My files and such are in the same spot as when I uploaded them but yet they have the offline red screen. If I click on some of the footage with the red screens, they will pop up as if they are online again. The other ones I have to actually move slightly and then the original footage will pop back up. On the timeline they look like they are online with the raw footage but if I bring the red line over them the picture will come up as if they are offline. If I double click the raw footage they come up normally but on the actual edited screen they are the media offline screen. And just today after I went through and moved and clicked all the red screens for my video to actually show, I went to save to My Personal Computer, After I clicked save, my computer crashed and went to the blue screen. I was hoping this was a one time thing. After my computer re-booted, I went through my offline screens again, clicked save to my personal computer and the computer crashed again and went to the same blue screen. I have made videos before and never had this problem. It is also very irritating because the videos I make take about 2 weeks+ to make and now I can't even finish them. My operating system is Windows Vista. My computer is a Dell Studio xps system, new in August 2009. Any suggestion on how to fix this, is there an update needed? Hopefully something I can download.

Is your media on your C drive or on a second hard drive? If your media is being stored on a second hard drive --
particularly an external hard drive -- that could account for it showing up offline. It could be that, every time you start up your computer, your computer is assigning a different letter to the drive, for instance.
As for yoru crashes, that likely signals a more serious problem with your system. But it's hard to say what without knowing what type of camcorder your video is coming from, how fast your processor is, how much RAM you have and, especially, how much free, defragmented space is on your hard drive. It sounds very much like your system is choking because it lacks hardware resources or because the camcorder or media you are using is demanding more resources than you can provide (as when you use photos that are larger than 1000x750 pixels in size).

  • FCP4.5 + LiveType = Media Offline and gone forever.

    Hi everyone,
The other day I cut a project in FCP 4.5, everything was great, then I took a clip into LiveType at the end to do some titles, and then the next morning when I came in to resume the MEDIA OFFLINE box popped up showing all my files were missing. I tried to reconnect but it couldn't find them, I did a finder search and it couldn't find them. I ran Data Rescue and it couldn't find them. Nothing in the trash. They were just totally gone. So I've been trying to figure it out ever since, and I'm scared to cut again in case the same thing happens. I thought it was a LiveType bug, but maybe it's a pro app bug given some comments around here as I had FCP and LiveType open and was exporting from one to the other.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this happened? I posted to the LA Final Cut Pro Users's Group forum, too, and it's happened to a few people but mostly they're pretty stumped. This is a huge deal, and I'm really mad but at the same time glad my project was a short one.
    Thanks for your help,

It has happened to me, too, but just once.
There is no identifiable cause for this mysterious file deletion problem. It's frustrating because, as you found, the file is gone and it is as if the file never existed as far as the Macintosh drive directory is concerned.
We've been seeing posts about it for several years although yours in the first in many months. That's about all we know. It happens. It's a total bummer. And there's nothing we can do about it. FCP5.0 seemed to have put an end to it but that's not clear, either.

  • Media offline and loss of effects and transitions

    Hello,
I have been using Premier Pro CS3 for a couple of years with an XP operating system.  Most of the time I haven't had to many unusual things happening.  But recently I have done some major projects and after I rendered them and then closed Premiere Pro and opened it the next day, nothing is rendered and the tranistions and any effects I may have added are no longer there and in some cases I see the "media offline" screen.  I did find a work around thru the internet and some forums and that was to select all the files and move them a few frames then move them back.  Everything works fine then except now I have to render everything again.  My question is I recently started capturing using the detect scenes and I end up with quite a few clips whereas before I would just make one clip and cut out the sections I need.  All the files are on my harddrive on the computer nothing external.  Is it because I'm using detect scenes and I have so many short clips and that's the reason I have to move all the files and re-render.  I called Adobe and they wouldn't give me any answers as I'm using CS3 they kept telling me to upgrade to CS5.  Anyone have this type of problem and if so is there something I can do other than move all the clips and re-render?  It makes me very nervous to be moving all the clips and put them back even if it's only a couple of frames. Any help would be appreciated.  I do plan to upgrade to CS4 but want to know if I should quit using the detect scenes option when capturing.  The only thing I do, do is to put all the clips into seperate bins in the project window.  Thank you in advance for any help

something in the original project you created and the media you imported is saying, " The stuff is located HERE...and it's not finding the stuff THERE...." or you actually chose to use the media offline ( unlikely ).
You did SOMETHING somewhere along the way to confuse the program about where the stuff is located....
I don't use CS3 to capture stuff but use ScLive ( for sd work , not hd ) , and it is set up to make a clip for every time it sees the timecode indicate the camera was shut off and turned on ( scene detect on )....
That gives me a lot of clips in the folder I selected to capture to.
When I import those clips to a project ( usually in the same folder structure so I dont get confused where things are )..I then LEAVE the assets there and dont move them ....or the program won't be able to find them properly ( the link is lost if you move the stuff )...and it then is either prompting me where it is or it is seen as offline ( If I choose to ignore prompt to find it )...
    hope this helps

  • Some Media Offline, and No Sound in Video Export: Premiere Pro & Media Encoder

I have run into a couple problems:
First, sometimes when I try exporting an edited video from premiere, the video shows "Media Offline" even though it plays fine in Premiere. How could I fix this error?
Secondly, when I try exporting a different, longer-in-lenth video from Premiere, it shows NO Sound, despite there being sound in the ProRes file itself.
I tried restarting, clearing the cache and deleting the preferences - and it still isn't working. We also tried re-installing media encoder. I also tried contacting Adobe Support, and they haven't been helpful or responsive (My case number: 0186134420). Anyone know how to solve this one? Thanks!

See the last post and try it:

  • Thumbnails are all reading Media offline - and they all play fine

    Hello all,
My firewire 800 drive dismounted when I attached an additional firewire drive onto the chain. As a result Final Cut froze. I had to to do a hard reboot because my entire machine froze up.
I finally restarted Final Cut and when I did, my thumbnails images which IU was ussing to select my B-roll showed the red Media Offline Icon for each piece of media.
The footage is on the drive and plays fine. I cannot proceed with my project if I those Icons are unavailable
    Thank you,

After you follow Shane's suggestion, write yourself a big note and attach it to all your firewire drives. It should say -
"Do I feel lucky today? If not, shut down the computer before plugging and unplugging drives."
Yes, the specification for firewire suggests it should be hot swapable, but the reality of daily use, loose connectors, old or variable power supplies, and so on, can wreck havoc. Fried firewire ports, corrupted systems, scrambled data, and bad hair are only a few of the horrors that await you if you continue down this path.

  • "Media offline" and "The selected file cannot be linked"

Ok, I'm extremely frustrated right now.  I opened up a project file, and all of my motion backgrounds say "Media offline."  The files have not been moved or changed.  They haven't even been touched.  So, I tried to link them back, but then it says "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)."
There was never any audio associated with these files.  These files have always been just motion backgrounds.
I can't just reimport them and start over.  There are too many of them.
Is there any way I can just override the error?  I obviously don't need any audio.  I don't understand why there's no option to just link without the audio, especially since there never was any audio.

Sorry, this is CS3.  I forgot to write that.
Edit: Ok, if anybody else has this problem and finds this through Google, I found out what caused it and how to fix it.
Some other program, I think a video converter, rewrote my codecs.  And it didn't do a good job.  I had already removed the video converter because it wasn't any good anyway.  So, I went through my "Uninstall or change a program list" (this being Windows), and removed everything that didn't look familiar, and then I reinstalled Xvid.  Now it works fine.

  • Media Offline after Crash

After an unespected quit some clips appeared offline.
If I clic "reveal in finder" the clip is there and opens fine in the QT player.
FCPX clip info says that the file was modified and asks me to connect the drive with the original file.
The worst thing is that the event for that clip was not in use nor the project containing the clip. So FCPX crashed and then I got a corrupted something that is not related in any way with the event and project I was working on. Bizarrous!

I dragged and drop the file that came back from color.
Dragged and dropped? There is nothing to drag and drop. You SEND TO FCP from Color, then in FCP a new sequence shows up. Double click on that.
But I might be getting into semantics...you might be doing that but not explaining it well.
    Trash your FCP prefs...

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Media file thumbnails in browser say "media offline", but files are online and available for viewing/editing. How do I get a thumbnail of the clip back?

I am moderately experienced with FCE, but cannot figure out this issue. The thumbnails in my browser say "media offline", and no longer show a thumbnail of my video clip. When I try to reconnect the media files, the reconnect dialog box only checks for "online" media. I am able to view and work with the media files in my project even though it says they are offline. This issue seems to occur after a power outage. Its more of an annoyance than anything else, but I would still like to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Figured it out.

  • All media is suddenly offline and can't link files???

    Hello,
Having a real nightmare here. I installed a new drive and put the material from the replaced drive onto the new one, all fine. I was working on a project last night without any problems and today the same project has all media offline and I can't link to the media because it says - "File video dimensions (Width/height) too large" - even with mp3's!
I have tried inporting into a new file, it doesnt work. Other files work, or else prompt for where to point, but then they are fine.
I am using CS4 completely updated, MAtrox Axio LE.
Any help greatly appreciated as I can't work...

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks very much for responding, sorry I didnt reply sooner. I have tried everything you've listed there to no avail. some projects still have all media offline and wont allow anything to be imported.
Is there anything else you can think of? I have done so many reinstallations now that I think I will just migrate to FCP, its been so disruptive over the last month or more. Very unfair.
    Cheers

  • Adobe Media Encoder 4.0.0.374 - Media Offline Error when encoding

My problem is a little urgent, so, if possible, i want a fast answer.
I edited my video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. When it was done, i tryed to export it, in File > Export > Media (Ps. In my program, i don't have File > Export > Movie). I set my video export settings, and then accepted. The Adobe Media Encoder 4.0.0.374 window appeared, with my project in the queue list. Then, i pressed in "Encode". First, the program is slower than normally to load the file, but i think it can be that my video is too long. After load, it starts to encode. After a time, in the preview box, appear the "Media Offline" ( and never is the same footage ) image, the same of Premiere Pro CS4. After a little, a "Encoding unsucceful. Unknown Error" appears, and the encoding stops. I don't know if is a Premiere Pro or Media Encoder error, so i posted here.
    Considerations:
Before i encode, i ever verify (and fix if necessary) if all videos of the project is linked, but ever time i reopen the project, some footages ( never the same ) are unlinked, and i have to link again.
I tryed to encode various differents formats, like AVI, WMV or F4V, but in every time i get the error. I tryed even to export first the audio, then the video, separated, to link after, but only the audio is succeful exported.
    I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, with a 4gb RAM, 1TB HD and Pentium Dual-Core 3Ghz.
I just got to encode with succes some times before. This is the first time it occurs.
I used the program (Premiere Pro) normally, some days ago, until 02/11. Since 03/11, it slowed. I just disabled all visual effects, disfragmented my disk, cleaned, and set the "Use more energy to more process" settings, but my program is still slow.
If needed more considerations, ask to me.
I just searched for similar problem, but dont got any result.
Sorry if my english is bad, i am Braziliam.

I have a similar problem. When I attempt to encode a list of clips, Media Encoder sometimes fails with a media offline warning. The media is just fine, nothing actually off line nor corrupted. If I elect to encode directly from Premiere Pro, the compilation proceeds normally. That's not practical when I have a list of clips and other things to do besides watch the creeping status bar.
My temporary fix was to uncheck the "import sequences natively" option. It's a little slower using the dynamic link, but it works, and my hair can start growing again.
This glitch appeared only with the latest update via Creative Cloud.

  • Media offline / file import failure

    Hi,
I have my project created in Premiere CS6. Now i updated to CC.
In my project, i imported a really short AE file into my Pr timeline. The whole vidieo worked fine.
Now I just noticed that media (AE file) was reported media offline in Premiere CC.
OK, I tried to locate the media from the folder where i keep the file.
Can locate the file but hitting "ok" button won't let me select the file.
Ok, I treid to rename the AE file. Imported the file in Pr, but Pr says file import failure.
    Anyone come across this problem.
Not sure if this's because of version CC. My AE file is there. Nothing has changed.
Just don't know why I can't relocate and import the file.

  • Media Offline/Missing Files In FCExpressHD

Very confused. Edited footage and saved on External HD. Lacie 200GB...Been very careful to constantly save all work on External HD. Been on 6 week trip. Powered down Powerbook, unplugged everything including Ext HD and put away.... just returned. Got back into FCE HD and for no reason..I get the Media Offline and Missing Files message. What could I have possibly done to make this happen. I deleted NOTHING during my editing process and kept saving and saving..Now this!...What did I do wrong?

If it's new the external may not be formatted
correctly to work with a Mac.
    Is the format Mac OSExtended?

    Hello Al...
I resolved the problem...I physically went into my Lacie External HD..and found the FCE video file I was working on..double-clicked it, FCE opened and brought up all my files/images/video onto the timeline without a problem...
    Nothing missing, nothing offline...
I don't know why, when I open FCE HD (FIRST) and go to File>Open or >Open Recent..after not being on-line for several weeks (out of town on trip)..I get these "offline or missing files" error messages...but when I go directly to my External HD...find the file, click on it..and it opens..I'm bewildered...
    Anyway...I guess I shouldn't complain...everything looks OK...
    Thanks again.

  • Media Offline from a USB

I have uploaded some pictures in jpeg format from a usb to a final cut project. Everything is working fine, I had saved it an everything then, my unreliable usb, was bumped and was disconnected. The pictures in my timeline now say media offline and the pictures in the browser have media offline with a line through them. What do I do??

Files in FCE simply "point" to the originals where you imported them. So your photos are simply "pointers" to your original USB drive. What do you mean "was bumped and disconnected"?
If you can reattach your drive, do so and open up final cut. Right-click on one of the "media-offline" files, and choose reconnect media. Then locate where on your drive the files are using the FCE Reconnect window, and you should be fine.
P.S. You should only have to point to one photo in the Reconnect window and FCE will find them all, provided they are in the same place.

  • The slideshow I saved says media offline

I saved 100-150 photos, with transitions between each.  Now when I open it, it says media offline and asks me where each and every photo is stored...waste of time with a brand new program...first time used...NOT happy!

    gperry4
Please confirm what version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system it is running?
Am I correct in assuming that you are building this slideshow in the Premiere Elements Editor and not the Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor/Builder?
If you are getting Media Offline messages when you open a saved closed project, the likely explanations include
    1. You moved, deleted, renamed files and folders that were imported into the project after you saved closed the project. When you import
your source media into a project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals which are at their hard drive save location. But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the location where they were when first imported into the project. The "Where is the file....?" messages are your means to make the source media - product reconnects.
    2. The other possibility is that you store your source media on an external hard drive and that the drive has malfunctioned, perhaps changing driver letter.
Please review and consider, and then let us know if any of the above applies to your situation.
    Thank you.
