PE 7 (or 8!) and Canon HF10 Full HD1080 25p

I want to preserve the quality of the 1080p 25FPS progressive AVCHD that comes out of my HF10.
My problem with PE7, and it seems also with the PE8 trial version, is that
1. the highest quality project setting Full AVCHD is only 25i (interlaced) - not progressive - and
2. on export back to my PC as it seems only to offer me 1440 (not 1920).
So I've used the very basic Pixela program that came with my HF10, to do a basic slice (to get rid of the rubbish footage) because that at least allows me to export as 1920x1080. The bit rate appears identical to the original pre-sliced AVCHD files.
I only use PE7 to create movie projects for export therefore. I was looking forward to PE8, but it seems PE8 has not come out supporting 1080p 25FPS export either.  I seem to feel the need to jump ship.
Am I missing a trick with PE8, or is it that Adobe won't deliver 1080p 25FPS progressive AVCHD export to hard disk on PE8,  because PE8 is a consumer entry level program, and if I could afford £700 for my Hf10 I can affort £700 for Premiere Pro?
Why is it hard to find detailed documentation that says what a program accepts for input, and what it can deliver to as output?
Why should I secure lovely full HD footage, only to see my software degrade it?

After a bit of travel, and a few more experiments on my return, I am back again, and can report.
Yes it seems I can successfully export non-interlaced 1920-1080 using the instructions you set me, and so my outputs are once again to my liking. It's all very manual though, and to avoid crashes (C++ error) I also have to manually create the project export setting.
What gets me is why is Adobe apparently hiding the capability to export as 1920x1080?  It seems either amateurish, or a trap.
Either way,  I am still going to jump from this program, and possibly up to Premier Pro - why, because PE8 does not allow me to import my AVCHD files from my HF10 clip them down and then export lossely as AVCHD. Some lower level programs apparently do.
PE7 (and PE8) supports AVCHD, but it sure doesn't retain it. It should be said that PE8 eats AVCHD. No, I don't want my software telling me I can't have my AVCHD after it has gobbled it. My final grip was mentioned back up this chain, it is hard to find the evidence of what the export capabilities are from the literature on PE8. It is as if it is hidden.
I still have my native AVCHD stiing on my machine all clipped up, because Canon provided some very basic software with the camera that allowed me to clip the rubbish out and re-export it as .m2ts 1080p files (timecodes lost and all!).
I still use PE8 to create outputs to disc, but I dare not let PE8 process my inputs into clipped up (rubbish-removed) raw footage for future movie projects. So I am compromised.
I may as well face it, PE will always disappoint me because I am looking for more than it aims to do -  even if not more than it claims to do.
I stand to be corrected.

  • Log & Trasfer with FCE 4 and Canon HF10

I have a new Canon HF10 and the latest ver of FCE. I have a Macbook Pro with a FIreWire 800 external scratch disk set up.
    I do the following:
    1. in the newly named project i add a new bin and make it "set capture bin"
    2. i then connect the camera to a power source
3 i connect the camera to the computer via USA cable provide and make the connection on the right side USB Port.
    4. i turn the camera on and then click the camera to Playback Video mode. (it does mount on the desktop)
    5. i then go into FCE and then do the short cut to Log and Transfer. it comes up but no clips are visible.
i have tried different kinds of iterations and no luck.
I look forward to your detailed instructions on how to solve this problem.
FYI i am working on a story on orphaned children in Pakistan's Swat valley and am pressed for time. feel free to contact me directly if you need.
    thank you in advance.

Forum search is your friend. There are a number of things that may be causing problems. What settings are on the media? What settings have you selected in FCE? Is there mixed media in different formats on the card? Have you tried the Add Folder button and pointed it at the mounted device? In the preferences popup in log and transfer have you emptied the cache? Made sure video is set to the Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio set to plain stereo?

  • Premiere Elements 7 and Canon HF10

I cannot get Premiere Elements 7 to recognize my Canon HF10 camcorder when I try to import the video files. I am able to import the files using Pixela which can with the camera, but I want to import directly from the camera. I am running Vista 64. Anyone else having problems like this?

Yes this has been reported before for the HF10 and HF100. Until there is a fix or workaround you will need to import via the Get Media From File or Folder option after having downloading the files to your hard drive using the software that came with the camcorder.

  • Confused by Canon HF10, iMovie '09, AVCHD and file size

Please forgive me for these (probably) basic questions, but right now I feel like a complete idiot.
I recently purchased the Canon HF10. At first I thought it was going to be great to have an HD camcorder (a reason to buy an HDTV, too) for home movies, but evidentially this isn't going to be as nice as I thought. I don't understand the following:
I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
    1. When I use iMovie '09 to import my video, it is taking forever to transfer. Why?
    2. If the internal memory is 16GB, why is it taking up >100GB when I transfer it to my computer? (I don't get it)
    3. What does the camera frame rate setting mean by i60 Normal or PF30 or Pf24? (again, I feel really stupid)
    4. Is iMovie '09 the right app or is there something else? If something else, why? Again, I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
Thanks for understanding my lack of knowledge and all your help and insight is appreciated!
    SP

Regarding stop action, this camera has the ability for you to take stills while video is recording. It's pretty interesting. Even better, iMovie lets "Add Still Frame to Project." Also if you play video from iMovie Project or Event window's, you can easily view one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing the left or right arrow.
Hard disk storage is cheap now, save up and buy a drive to archive your video. That way later on you could re export your movies to an HD compatible format since burning to DVD as your doing now is not HD.
Also, yes definitely use 60i for action video. This camera really does a great job.
The thing about 30p/24p with this camera is that the resolution is reduced: 60i=1920x180 pixels whereas 30p and 24p modes on this camera is 1440x1080.

  • Log and Transfer Issues - Canon HF10

I have just recently acquired a Canon HF10 video camera and have had success getting some of the video to my Mac via log and transfer, however when the video files seem to be much longer than a few minutes the process fails. The status bar while it's transferring makes it all the way to 100%, but the file itself never moves up to the browser. When I click the file in the log and transfer window after the status bar has stopped moving I get a red exclamation mark with unknown error. Any help on this will greatly be appreciated.

I believe I have figured out what the issue is. I was using an old 250Gb external as my scratch drive. Well - this drive is in FAT format and I just discovered that the FAT drives are limited to 4GB limit, hence the reason I couldn't transfer my larger files. I'm planning on reformatting this drive to Journaled OSX and I should be cool.

  • Canon HF10 and Apple TV

I'm thinking about buying the Canon HF10 and in my research I've got a couple of questions that I just wanted to be sure about. Am I correct that the file one would download off of the flash card is an AVCHD H.264 formatted file? What is the exact file extension? Also, does the built in 16gb card capture about 2 hours of footage at the highest quality? And let's say I pull this 16gb of data off the card and onto the computer via iMovie, will this take 16gb of hard disk space? Or does it somehow decompress and expand as I pull it off the camera? And, even though it's a h.264 compressed file, I won't be able to directly play it over my Apple TV? What do I need to do in order to play it on the Apple TV. I saw some posts saying it was best to record it in 24fps, but I'm not sure what to do after that.
    Thanks!
    Rod

    hey there solsurfer,
if your cam is AVCHD, your footage will be converted to AIC in iMovie 08 or FCE4. these files will be about 4x the size of standard -def/MiniDV. so if 1 hour of DV=12.3 GB, then 1 hour of AVCHD/AIC will be 49.2GB. you might want to consider a large(320GB or more) HDD for your movies & events.
in iMovie 08 you edit your footage, then "Share" to Apple TV & the movie will be encoded & sent to iTunes.
specific questions about a cam's capture format/codec, quality & quantity on flash media should be available @ the manufacturer's 'site.
    good luck.

  • How to import video from Canon HF10?

I'm probably just an idiot, but I can't figure out to import the video footage from my Canon HF10. My comp has no problem recognizing the internal hdd and the extra sd card I have for it, but I normally don't work in iMovie, so I'm a little technically ******** when it comes to it's operation. Help?

    To all who care,
I have a MacBook unibody and am running Snow Leopard. I have experienced all the same frustrations listed above and on other related posts with respect to the Canon HF10 and Leopard/Snow Leopard. I will tell you that it made absolutely NO SENSE to me why Canon, a very Mac friendly company, would make these procedures SO difficult. Why would I purchase a compact high definition camera that fits in the palm of my hand if space saving and simplification was not a premium in the decision matrix of my investment? You're telling me I need to travel with a power cord, USB cable and an installation CD/DVD at every juncture of my video editing with cords scattered from heck to breakfast? Well, I don't, and Canon didn't intend on my doing that, either.
Procedure to be able to simply place your videos into a finger sized SDHC card reader after placing them on your SDHC/Class IV or higher/card directly from your camera:
    1. Ensure your card in installed in your camera (duh)?
    2. Turn Camera On.
    3. Spin selector wheel to Video Playback.
    4. Notice Four Options: Movies: Original (Built-In Mem), Movies: Original (Card), Movies: Playlist (Built-In Mem), Movies: Playlist (Card).
    5. The work you've done all goes into the "Movies: Original" Locations. If you, like me, have popped out your card here and beat your head against your computer screen wondering why you can't get to what you know to be on the card, you've stopped here... Here, yes, you do need to follow the book procedure and play the musical cords and curse the poor ergonomic nature of this design.
    6. **Clutch Move** Highlight the work you'd like to edit on iMovie in the "Movies: Original (Card)" section and press the FUNC. button.
    7. **Clutch Move2** Select "ADD TO PLAYLIST", at which point you will be asked, All scenes on this date or simply this one scene. Do whatever you like, the camera means business. Confirm your request.
    8. Check your procedure following skills by now moving to the "Movie: Playlist (Card)" category.
    9. Whattaya know!!! Now something is there that wasn't before, that same video clip I've been trying to put on my computer now strangely exists in two locations on my camera... Well, just push the "I believe button" and trust me. When you extract your SDHC card and interface it with your computer, you will be very happy when you see iMovie respond to your request in familiar Mac style and fashion.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if any of you find success with the above procedure.
    Godspeed, Mac friends,

  • Problems importing Canon HF10 media into FCP7

Hello everyone, hoping for what I hope will be an obvious answer, but one I've yet to find myself!
I am trying to import files directly from a SDHC card from a Canon Vixia HF10 into the latest version of FCP Studio 7, ( and also I've tried to import into FCExpress ver4 too ), but without success when I put the card into the SDHC reader slot in my new 27" Quad iMac. I get a message when using Log and Transfer saying that it is an incompatible file format. However I can import the files if I download via the camera and USB connection into Log and Capture, that's not always possible of course when the camera's not here, but the used cards are. I have also tried another SDHC card reader into an open USB slot, ( the way I normally import files from my Sony EX1R for instance....), but that doesn't work either.
I know there's an issue with the AVCHD files that the Canon produces, but I thought that recent FCP and FCE applications could deal with that. I am running OSX 10.6.3. In the Log and Capture import prefs the AVCHD option is set to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ. The iMac is a new 27" 2.66 GHz Quad core i5. But I have the same importing issue with my 17" MBP as well.
Any clues would be gratefully received, thanks!

OK, just found the solution, and as pretty much always, it was "operator error"........
The camera, Canon HF10, was set to record to it's internal memory, not the SDHC card. So that's why media could be read when you downloaded via USB2 cable connection, but if you tried to read from the SDHC card slot on the Mac there was nothing there to read. Would have stumbled across this earlier if the error message stated "no media", but it didn't it just said the media could be read.
Solution, set the camera to record to the SDHC card not the internal memory and Log and Capture picks it up just fine with the card is in the reader.
    best.......Peter

  • Canon HF10 Problem in FCP

    Hi,
I saw something similar in some of the other message boards but didn't understand it.
I shot a feature film using a canon hf10 at 24p and a panasonic hpx170 at 24p. I brought the panasonic footage into fcp using log and transfer. however, when i try to bring the canon footage in log and transfer reads it as 30p, and not 24. the camera is clearly set to 24p. Is this a problem with FCP or with the Canon? Will I have to convert my footage? Will this cause any problems? Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

    Jordan-
What you'll need to do is to take your .mov files you log and transferred from the HF10 and put them into Compressor. Inside of Compressor convert them into ProRes 422 LT with Frame Controls On - and select "Remove Telecine" under the Deinterlace drop-down.
What's happening is that the HF10 shoots 24p footage and then wraps it in a 60i wrapper using a processing called telecine. You just need to remove the telecine and the footage will be fine.

  • Importing footage from a canon hf10 camcorder

hi, this is my first time on this forum...im having difficulty importing all the footage i have from my canon hf10. i have it plugged in but it tells me it cannot locat some firewire thing and that my system configuration may have chaged...im pretty computer illiterate and havent a clus what to do....i am using the new macbook pro and the final ut express 4 program. i would really really appreciate some help on this...thank you!!!!

Hello and welcome aboard the FCE forum,
You should use a USB cable and the _Log and Transfer_ FCE function. AVCHD is a different beast to Mini DV that requires firewire for transfer/capture and the _Log and Capture_ FCE fuction..
Try a search for hf10 on this forum, plenty of info.

  • Canon HF10

    Hi
I have recently bought a new Macbook with Imovie 09 on it. I have tried to add video clips from my Canon HF10, however, the macbook doesn't even recognise it. any ideas?
    thanks
    Graham

    I have a Canon HF100.
Wire the camera to the USB port on your Macbook. Switch the mode of the camera to playback (not recording mode) and turn it on, making sure your LCD screen is open. Soon, the camera will ask you to choose between "PC mode" or another mode. Use the joystick on the camera to select PC mode (move the joystick to the right to highlight PC Mode, then press.)
Once you do this, the camera's disk will mount on the desktop. If you were to open that by clicking, the top level folder would be labeled "Private." Feel free to look around the directory structure, but you can't do much with those files.
Fire up iMovie -- once the above is done -- and choose "Import from Camera." After a few moments, the import window will open and you'll see all your clips from the camera. Either import all, or click to select the ones you want.
    Hope this helps!
PS: I'm not sure if there's a difference on the HF10 for accessing the camera's built-in memory versus the SD card. My camera only has SD card.

  • Canon HF10/ HF100

Does anyone know whether the new canon HF10/ Hf100 will work with FCE?
    ta

I posted this over at another forum so this is a copy paste from that forum
just picked one up yesterday and its nice for the size
so far played with it a bit so these are early observations with limited use
image quality is not that of my HDRFX1 of course but its still very nice for the size
I can fit this little guy inside the hood of my fx ! its that small
I have not had or used the small tape or disc based models of the sony or canon consumer models just what I have seen on camcorderinfo
but to me the small size no HD to fail no tapes to worry about etc.. its perfect
I wanted the 10 as the price for a built in 16 gb is not that bad a good (like Nutmac said) 16 gig like the sandisk is still about $150 so this way I can have 16 built in 16 in the slot a extended battery and nothing to loose for the whole day
same reason I have a point and shoot vs a 1D size camera for daily shooting (I am a photographer for living) I like small light and easy when I am out and going to the park etc...
I might for fun do some comparisons with the FX1 if I get time
in our living room with minimal lighting at night there is noise in the video and its not perfect but not horrible
bright outside light the contrast is a bit higher than I like while I prefer the smoother look of the FX1 but also I have not played with cinemode yet on the HF10 which might help
colors can bloom a little and highlights can blow out a little colors can look a bit overcooked
but then again I am coming from a FX1 ? as I have not had a small camera in many years
I guess I can say comparing a small point and shoot to my pro bodies in the still world is about like this HF10 camera compared to my FX1
its very nice for what it is
as far as waiting ? I can always wait but my almost 4 year old will never have these years back and I want to record them the best I can

  • Editing from Canon HF10

I am using PP CS4 to edit footage from my Canon HF10 HD camera. I am shooting in 1080p. When I render the file, there is a thin green line at the bottom of the image. My import settings match up with the properties of the source (1920 x 1080, 29.97 frame rate, pixel a/r 1.0). I am rendering the file to 482 x 272.
this is driving me nuts...any ideas?
    Thanks
    Joe Parsons

I use cs3 and apparently there are differences between cs3 and 4...re: aspect ratios etc....so maybe someone with cs4 can help you more...
but basically my experience has been that you can export using desktop settings ( custom ) that deal with those type discrepancies...
you didnt say what you are exporting to ( what size )...I dont think...so I dont know if this will help but here's an example
I edited something recently as 720p ( 1280x720 ) from red camera , shot 2k , converted to 1280x720, square pixels, 2397...and then exported for a flash movie on my website...at 720x405 ...instead of dealing with the 16::9 baloney and counting on some preset I just exported my own size to fit the product...and it worked great....using custom setttings and so on....and avoided black bars and green things etc...
maybe you'll have the same luck using exactly the settings you want for your export ?

  • What is the best project setting in Adobe PE 8 for Canon HF10 Camera?

I have a Canon HF10 camera and I am trying to import the video but can't seem to find a setting that does not require significant rendering before the file is even editted. I am currently using  NTSC > AVCHD-HD1080i30    Once I import a file I get the redline across the top of the timeline.  I have tried just about every preset the app offers.
My imported file says video is 1440 x 1080 BR 7300kbps FR 29 fs  audio is 256kbps sample rate 48k
    Thanks
