PE 9 - Audiocompression in AVI?

Hello,
I´m using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 since two weeks now.
It´s a great software, but I´ve got some problems with codecs.
WMV is a bit slow, I don´t like MainConcept so far.
So I decided to use AVI as the container for the video.
Under "Video" I selected x264vfw, a H.264 encoder for AVI-containers (which is a little bit better than MainConcept).
But, under "Audio" I can´t select any audio encoder. There is just "Uncompressed".
Is there any way to fix that?
Does Premiere Elements 9 not support Audio-Encoders via DirectShow?

The available choices for Audio will depend on the wrapper/container and CODEC, that you choose. I do not know your specific CODEC, so that could well be the limiting factor. Also, the available Audio CODEC's on your system, plus whether PrE can access and work with them.
While I have an older version of PrE, than you do, and probably different sets of CODEC's on the system, in some wrappers/containers and with some CODEC's, I only have the PCM/WAV Uncompressed Audio option, however with other wrappers/containers, and other CODEC's, I have many more options available. As an example, if I choose MOV w/ H.264, the only Audio is Uncompressed. With MS-AVI, I have a half-dozen options, but my version will not allow me to use the H.264 CODEC with that wrapper/container, though I do have many other CODEC options from DivX to Lagarith Lossless.
As for DirectShow, not sure if Premiere can use that option. I have never used it for Audio. As a bit of a history lesson, and maybe not relavent here, Premiere went with their own playback engine, leaving all DirectShow behind, with PrPro 1.0, which, IIRC, predated the first release of PrElements by about 1 year. I do not think that PrElements ever used DirectShow, but could well be wrong. I am basing my assumption only on the development timeline for PrE's "big brother," PrPro.
Now, it is possible that if one had FFDShow installed, the DirectShow Audio might be available, BUT that thought comes with a BIG WARNING!!! FFDShow has been known to really foul up both Adobe Premiere programs, PrE and PrPro, so I do not recommend installing it. It also can be a real problem to uninstall, and some users have had to resort to a full HDD reformat and reinstallation of the OS, and everything Adobe. Note: some users HAVE been able to do a simple uninstall of FFDShow, and then just a simple Registry clean, but not all. If you explore FFDShow, please do a System Restore Point, BEFORE you install it.
Wish that I could offer more than just thoughts and observations from previous versions and from PrPro, but maybe others can be of more help.

If you just want to move these avi and mkv files to play on iMac, you can download VLC player, it plays just every file format.

How can I convert an .AVI movie file to get it into i-movie for editing?

I have downloaded the VLC media player which will open and play the .AVI files from a video camera (RCA Small wonder high def digital camcorder EZ229HD). Now I need to be able to convert these movies (which will only open and play after dragging them to the desktop) to import into i-movie so they can be edited. Anyone know how to do this? The phone support at MAC help said they really can't do any third party stuff so I do not know what to download, purchase, or even if this is possible. Can't imagine a format that won't work with a MAC! Please help. Thank you! Need these for a project.

I have received a disk of photos which are avi files, what software do I need to download to be able to view the slideshow and save them within i-photo please

Having had some photos done at a photographers, they have passed me the disc of the slideshow, which is in avi format, however I cannot view it on my imac, I would be really grateful if someone could advise me what software I need to download that is compatible with the imac whereby I can view the slideshow and also whether I can then save the slideshow to iphoto. Hope you can help, I am not great with technology as you can probably guess.

I use Smart Converter which is free on the App Store. It is easy to use , just drag and drop the files to convert to Quicktime , takes no time and great results.

IMAQ AVI read frame performance

I've been playing around with the read AVI with buffer example in the Developer Community. It reads all the frames of an AVI into memory and then plays them back at the appropriate frame rate. This works ok with very small AVI files but with anything larger it gets slower and slower until it almost stops loading the AVI. At that point it seems to be loading less than 5 frames per second and is killing my cpu. I have plenty of free RAM during this.

This is the case with the play AVI example that comes with Labview too (without a buffer) which just loads and plays one frame at a time. Can someone suggest a way to improve the performance of an AVI player in Labview? My ultimate goal is to read an AVI and detect changes in motion of objects by comparing two frames at a time. These AVIs are going to be at least 5 minutes in duration at a frame rate of 30 fps.
I'm using Labview 2009 with the Vision Developer installed.

Thanks for replying. I'm running labview 2009 on a dual core pentium 2.3 GHz with 4 Gigs of ram. It typically has 2 Gigs free while running the program.
I'm not tryingt write an AVI, I'm trying to read an AVI. The frames are 352 x 240 in size. I've tried several read AVI examples and they all act the same way. They slow down quickly and the hard drive and CPU are really cranking away.

Quicklook no longer working with AVi files in 10.7

Howdy,
Mysteries abound! Updated to 10.7, and ever since, I have been having two problems:
1. AVI files no longer open open using QuickLook; all I get is is the AVI icon, and the "Open in VLC" button.
2. The icon preview for AVI files is no longer displayed as well; only the generic VLC icon shows (and yes, I have the "Show icon preview" box cheeked in the Finder preferences).
Is anyone else having the same problem? Does anyone know how to remedy this? Thanks in advance! (^_^)

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.

Can't create any files beside AVI in Media encoder CC 7.2.2.29 (64 bit)

Hi there,
I have a recent problem with media encoder. when ever I export media from Premiere CC to Media encoder and send it to queue (as I usually do) it seems that I cant export it to any format beside lossless AVI.
If I choose for instance H264 match source - high bitrate or WMV , after I send it to queue I see that it export the file in AVI format and not as I asked.
I'ts a new problem and I can't recall that I've made any changes in my PC.
I uninstall and re install Premiere but with no help.
any suggestions will be appreciated.

Playing inserted avi files in Adobe Acrobat 9 or later

A user has inserted avi files into Adobe and it always worked up to version 8.1.
Any version later than that, the avi files will not play anymore.
Is there any way to make them play or will all his files need converted to another source?
Converting them all to a different format would be quite the task as there are many videos involved.

I used to be able to open .avi files in Photoshop just fine, but I’ve just tried opening one again after a couple of months and I can’t. It’s just black blankness. I have no problem with .mp4 files, but unfortunately, most of the videos I'm trying to make gifs out of are in .avi format.
Is it because I've updated QuickTime? Or is it that Adobe CS no longer supports .avi files? It says here that Photoshop CS6 supports the .avi format.

Unable to play Cineform avi files in Premiere Pro CS3

I am using Cineform NeoHD version 5.3.2 to convert the MXF files from my Canon XF300 into Cineform AVI.
Then I import these AVI files into Premiere Pro CS3 and here is where the problem begins.
Premiere is unable to play these Cineform files. All I get is about a second of audio, and a still frame of the video. This happens both in the source window, and also on the timeline.
The Cineform AVI files play perfectly fine when using Virtualdub for playback, but Windows media player behave just like Premiere.
Everything worked fine a week ago. Premiere appeared to use something called "ffdshow" to play the Cineform files, and I could edit without any trouble.
A few days ago, when I tried the same, that's when the problems came. Whenever I hit Play button in Premiere, a popup window came up, saying Premiere wanted to use ffdshow, and the options was "never", "no once", "yes once", "yes always".
When everything worked a week ago, I had to use the "yes always" option.
Now, it does not matter which option I use, Premiere will not play the Cineform files.
I did not make any changes to my computer between the day everything was okay, and when the problem appeared.
A Cineform representative suggested "ffdshow" is the troublemaker, so I uninstalled ffdshow and removed any traces of it I could find, but the same problem still exist.
Then I uninstalled Cineform NeoHD
Uninstalled and reinstalled Production Premium CS3 suite
Reinstalled Cineform NeoHD
Still same problem, nothing has changed.
It does not matter if I use 50i or 25p source files.
My system: (Laptop)
Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit
Intel 2,66GHz quad core CPU
4GB ram
Nvidia Geforce 8800M GTX
3x internal 7200rpm harddrives set up with raid-0

never used the cfrepair thing..but did install neoplayer which gave me the codec to use cs3 with cf raw files ( sample of cf raw at the si 2k site -- avi ext )
ps.... to keep overhead down on my computer I took the resulting cineform "player" out of my startup directory....as it wants to run in background when you install it...no need for that for my purpose of just getting the codec

What is the difference between avi and mov

Hi FCP users,
I am actually an audio guy, but I would like an answer on something.
I work with Logic, and usually use quicktime movies when I am working to movies. But I am working with a client who is an Avid user and swears by avi files. Can someone explain to me the difference. My client explained to me that avi's are better than mov files. He claims their file sizes are bigger, so therefore there quality is better. He said there is some form of compression on quicktime movies which lessen the quality to avi, even if the mov is uncompressed apparently the quality is still less than an uncompressed avi. If this is not true, could someone give me the real big difference between the two.
I thought is was more of a preference, like windows users prefer wav, and apple users like quicktime movies. Like with audio, there isnt a huge difference between aif and wav. Windows users prefer wav and apple users aif.

This is a disaster in the making. You can avoid being part of the train wreck by either renting an Avid, going to live at his house, or telling him to get a Macintosh.
You must find the lowest common denominator video format that will work on both of your systems. That could be conventional DV, dunno, never used Avid and never tried to edit anything on a PC. But I can tell you this with absolute certainty, it will be easier and, in the end, much less expensive for one of you to adopt the other's platform for the duration of this project. The time you waste transcoding, arguing, formatting your drives, buying secondary products, fitting round pegs into square holes, and trying to find a workable solution (that will keep changing as the project gets more complicated) will cost you much more in terms of money out of pocket and creative frustration than simply buying/renting another station.

Let us start from the beginning.
It has been established that you have Premiere Elements 10. On what computer operating system is it running?
There has not been a File Menu/Export/Movie export opportunitity in Premiere Elements since version 7. We are not up to version 12.
For Premiere Elements 10, your export opportunities are all in Share/ including one for Computer. Under Computer there are several choices. The ones that you see are Adobe Flash Video, MPEG, and AVCHD. The others you have to scroll down to. And those choices are AVI, Windows Media, QuickTime, Image, and Audio. You do not have to use the scroll bar for this. You can click on Adobe Flash Video panel to get it to turn black. Then use the down arrow to go down the list and the up arrow to go up the list. Once you get to a category, you can select a preset and go with it or customize it under the Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab of the preset.
If you post the properties of your source media that you want to try to match in the export, I would be glad to suggest the exact settings for you.

Add On...The Premiere Elements 10 File Menu is for more than Saving, just not exporting. One of the key features that can be access there is the Project Archiver. More on that another time.

In iLife08 what is best setting to convert avi 720 and digital video 1080i

What is the bottom line for best quality for 720 p TV.
1.) My import is digital video 1080i to i Movie 08 (full quality)
What should I use for sharing on AppleTV
- the preset Large (which is 960x 540)
- or some custom setting 25 fps at 1220x 720? ( H.264 display dimensions at 24/25 fps is 720p (1280x720) ) - or what should the setting be??
2.) Have Windows avi older 720 *480 video, what is best setting to convert this for Apple TV? The 640 setting on QuickTime premium is not very good

Your best option if you are using NTSC footage in imovie is the export to/movie large (960 x 540) at 30 fps, the resolution won't go any higher and still work on the tv. Don't even think about changing the framerate to 24/25 fps, even though you'll be able to export to 720p (1280 x720) changing the framerate will make your video jerky.
If you are using PAL then yes you could export to 720p (even though the specs say 24 fps, 25 fps does in fact work as well), you could try a few tests yourself but I've already done them and IMHO there is so little difference between 960 x 540 and 1280 x 720 that it isn't worth messing about setting up and trying several manual exports to get the best results when you can click one button and be done.
So far a AVI conversion is concerned, I'd try mpegstreamclip, but saying that I can't really be sure. AVI is a container not a codec and I would need to know what codec is actually used inside the container to answer your question properly (Quicktime may tell you though). The problem with AVI is that it is simply so old (even microsoft abandoned it over 10 years ago), unfortunately in a small number of cases some of the codecs that were used in AVI are simply no longer able to be converted. Probably not so likely but at least you are warned.
