PE10 & Dazzle.

A while ago I read a lot of suggestions for downloading/copying old VHS tapes into PE10 using Dazzle. From my point of view none of them worked electronicaly. So I reverted to a practical way and used dazzle to download into my copy of Pinnacle Studio HD, rendering to an AVI file and then uploading into PE10. Works perfectly but not very efficient. QUESTION: Could anybody tell me of a  Dazzle like 'machine' that will capture old VHS tapes and/or anything else directly into PE10?  robo_col

Unfortunately, the Dazzle devices seem to be problematic, and even with Pinnacle Studio. Few users were ever able to get them to properly Capture from analog sources. It has been many years, since I was last on the Pinnacle Studio forum, but back then, there were tons of problems mentioned. Do not recall anyone ever getting any real solutions - some times they worked, but all too often, they did not.
This article is a general tip-sheet for doing A-D Capture: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2727627#2727627
If you can get the Dazzle to work with Pinnacle Studio, that is probably as good as it will get, and count yourself fortunate, that it is working for you.

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • I film with an iPhone and edit in PE10, what project settings would be best?

So I'm filming a short film with my iPhone 4S, and editing in PE10. The recommended project setting for the iPhone 4S's footage is 'Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD 29_97'. However, I film using an App called FilmicPro, which allows me to customize frames per second, resolution and audio capture with some settings. In my case, I've set the app to film at 30fps and with a resolution of 1920x1080. I still use the above mentioned project setting. So my first question is:
-If I'm filming in 1080x190 at 30fps, is there a different setting I should be using for the project?
Now for the second part. The first part of my editing process is I start a project, select 'Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD 29_97', then I splice and string together the raw footage from FilmicPro like normal. Next I export the project with the settings:
Quicktime (For email and playback on Mac)
    Output: 1920x1080, 29_97fps, Progressive, Quality 100 48000hz, Mono, H.264
    Source: Clip, Sequence 01,
1280x720 (1.0), 29_97 fps, Progressive, *insert duration*, 48000 Hz, Stereo
    Audio Codec: AAC
    Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Mono
    Video Codec: H.264
    Field Type: Progressive
    Aspect: Square Pixels (1.0)
Render at Max. Depth: 24 bit
After I export the project, I start another project (not changing the project settings from before), and then I import the finished project as media so I can add special FX (in this case muzzle flashes, blood, etc.). However when I add the video, PE10 states the project settings dont match, and asks if I'd like the program to choose the correct settings. I select yes. This changes the project settings to 'DSLR-1080p-DSLR 1080p30'. I edit without issues, and use the same export settings as I did for the base draft. I also notice when I view the project settings in the second project after it changes settings, that it says the editing mode is now 'Sony XDCAM EX 720p'. So my second question is:
-Should I use the setting that PE10 switches to? Or select 'No' and still use the Flip Mino setting i used for the first draft?
The end video still looks great (for an iphone), although of course there is still noise. I'm basically trying to get the absolute best quality possible. If this is as good as it gets, and It turns out ive been doing this right, then that's fine. But if anyone can recomend better settings to use, then please tell. Thanks.
Forgot to mention, I'm using an unmodified MacBook Pro (2006) with Adobe Premiere Elements 10. Dont know if that info is needed, but thought I'd include it.

Maybe I missed something. So extra post on this.

Why? Where did the 720p30 come from?
If you have 720p30 footage, you should be using
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    AVCHD LITE 720p30
If that is what you have, do you really want to export that as 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720?

  • No windows shows up in PE10

In the last three days I've hade the same problem:
After working on a project (making video of still images), saving, closing and restarting the computer, I can't open the project again properly the next day.
When media is finished loading, there is no windows showing in PE. No error messages appears, but the monitor, timeline and editing(?) windows never appears.
There is no problem opening a new project though. I can still make my videos if I complete the project in one working day...
    Any ideas what's wrong?

Also, with PrE 10 and an nVidia GPU, have you seen the ANNOUNCEMENT at the top of the main forum page:
ANNOUNCEMENT: Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
    Hide Details
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.

  • Is PE10 compatible with Windows 8? Having trouble with the organizer.

Is PE10 compatible with Windows 8? Having trouble with the organizer

It does sound very Watch Folders-esque, however, it seems strange that there are many folders involved. Are all the folders under a single parent folder perhaps? If so, you could try renaming or moving that folder. Additionally, to clarify, all 60 files are images, correct?
Additionally, you can try creating a new catalog, just to see if that lets you in. Hold down the Shift key while launching the Organizer. If you get the timing right, the Catalog Manager will appear.

  • "Could not complete the "...."command because of a program error" PE10, Windows 7, 64 bit

I have just done a clean re-install of  PE10 on my windows 7, 64 bit desktop because I was getting the "Could not complete the "...."command because of a program error" message every time I try to do anything to my file such as applying a filter, enhance or anything. After I re-installed it, I still am getting the same results, making it completely useless. I do not use PE10 often, as I use Lightroom 5.3 almost exclusively for my picture manipulations, but I do need it for some purposes. Please help.

"...create a new layer by selecting the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers pallet..."
That produces a blank layer. With this blank layer selected, you should get the message "Could not complete the command because the selected area is blank".

  • AVCHD edit in PE10 share to DVD or Blue Ray

I am currently editing a project in AVCHD and plan on making DVD and BR discs.  Not all the people who want this footage have blue ray players or HD TVs.   The footage is of sporting events with lots of action and camera movement.    What I have found in doing many trial samples is the DVD quality is poor that PE10 produces when using AVCHD files.   I have done some limited editing with DV from an old camcorder in PE10 and it looks much better than the AVCHD rendered to a DVD disc.  Since the AVCHD files are much higher quality I was very disappointed that I can't get the same quality as an old camcorder that was mini DV.  After reading various forums and Steve Grisetti's book I have a work around but it seem crazy to go through all these steps.   Does this make sense?
Camera Cannon HFM 41 settings used are AVCHD  1440 x 1080 60i,  I have set the PE10 project settings at HD 1080i 30 (60).  After editing about 15 minutes of video, still pictures(which have been resized), with transitions, titles, etc.  PE10 seems to be doing the editing fine.
When taking through the Share process to DVD the quality is poor.
Steve has a work around in his book where I take the project  to a computer file and save it.  The setting is under the MPEG option and is : MPEG2  1440 X 1080i30.   This file looks good on the computer screen.
From here I take the file through "ANY Video Converter" to an AVI file.   I take this file and put it into a new PE10 project with DV settings of 720 x 480.   When I render this to a DVD the quality is OK, almost as good as other projects I have done starting with standard definition cameras.    Still a little disappointed that even the stills are quite as good.
This seems like a lot of work but I have tried dozens of different ways and the quality comes out very poor.   I have considered taking the files from the camera and converting to AVI before editing but then I can' t make a BR disc.
Is there a better way to take AVCHD to DVD and BR from one project?
There seems to be lots of opinions on which converters are the best, not sure if I selected the best one.

You should be shooting at 1920x10801 for Blue Ray otherwise you will get an unexpected loss of quality in trying to make your final BD.
1440 doesn't correspond to any horizontal TV size (usually 680,720,1366 or 1920)
The loss occurs because you cant fit in an exact pixel so a sharp video transition gets averaged around a few pixels immediatley halving the apparent resolution.
To see this at it's worst, set your computer adapter card to half the pixel resolution of your computer monitor and try to read fine text compared to when it is exactly the same.
This matching is why true full HD 1920 x 1080 observed on a true 1920x1080 big screen is so dramatically better than all others. (Few TV transmissions are true Full HD)
There is always a loss of some quality converting resolutions that are not an exact multiple of the final result.
You should also be cropping and converting all stills to 16x9 1900x1080 pixels (in Photoshop) before adding to the timeline
Because HD is so much better, HD camera dont need so much "high frequency" boost or sharpening as standard cameras did,
They are relatively soft at the point where the pixels cease in DVDs (about 640)
The HD sharpening (or crispening) is done at a much higher pixe setting setting in HD and this is completely wiped out when you convert to DVD.
The way to compensate is to sharpen the video to be downconverted at the 640 pixel part of the spectrum before converting which is what most standard def broadcast cameras always did to make them apparently sharp at that lower resolution (it was all done with mirrors!)
Obviously you only sharpen the file to be made to a DVD, not to the one for BD although you can often make up for a fuzzy original even in a BD!
See the difference only 10% makes?

  • Not getting a clear input from VCR through Dazzle DV-Bridge

I have a Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge device so that I can take VCR tapes and eventually burn them onto a DVD. It takes the audio and video from the VCR and pumps it into my Mac via Firewire.
The problem is that no matter what tape I play in the VCR, I'm getting distortion at the bottom of the screen. What can I do about this? Anyone know? Why is it only at the bottom? I want to clear this up before I digitize and put it on a DVD.
In the following screenshot, you will see what I'm talking about right below the "import" button.
    http://tinyurl.com/29clta
    Thanks!

Yes, I see what you mean, and I get this quite often. It is partly the timecode track, partly an audio (mono) track.
I have learned to ignore it in iMovie as it never appears in the finished DVD.
Considering how cheap a blank DVD is, try it out!

  • Dazzle

I intend to transfer my Super VHS tapes from an old camera to DVD and have aquired a Dazzle Platinum. But everything is for Windows! Does anyone know if it can be used on a Mac and if so how do I go about doing it? I have checked Pinnacle's site but no mention of a Mac there. I am an experienced Mac user and not frightened by jargon, etc.
    Hope someone can help.

You can try getting a canopus which is firewire driven and more stable than a usb driven. Anyway Dazzle can only be used on pinacle studio if you try using it on others window software like sony vegas or adobe premiere it dont work. It is a very restrictive hardware which i do not recommend.

  • PE10 Pixelated images in monitor

I have just upgraded to PE10 and, after some initial start up problems I had, it seems to be running fine (so far - haven't tried any major edits yet) except that when I play the loaded video files (and stills for that matter) the images in the editor monitor pixelate (they seem ok in pause mode) making editing a little awkward as the images aren't clear (of course).
I created a still title and, whilst not so bad, the text blurs when in the monitor play mode.
I don't think it is a render issue as there have been no major edits merely cuts and shortening of clips. There is no red line in the timeline but I have 'hit' return anyway and the 'Render' information box doesn't materialise.
I am running Windows 7 - 64 bit and this is the version I dowloaded. Screen resolution for the PC monitor is set to 1920x1080.
The video files were shot on a Canon XM2 in 16:9 format and appear fine when run through the camera.
The PE project settings are for 16:9 PAL.
A burned disc plays ok on a televsion through a DVD player.
I took a screen dump of the video whilst playing  the video and, although the image is quite small (upload constraints), careful scrutiny will see the pixelation
How can I improve the play resolution of the editor monitor?
    Brian

Though the un-Rendered footage on the Timeline is seldom seen as "pixelated," it can be blurry.
There will likely be red lines above the Title, and possibly some of the Video and Still Images. If one Renders, by pressing Enter/Return, those should turn green, and then one will have the best possible playback. This ARTICLE goes into more detail.
Also, having chosen a correct Project Preset, at New Project, can be very, very important for best quality. The Project's Preset should match the Video Assets - the Source Video Files.
Also, if the Still Images are overly-large, Scaling in PS, or PSE, prior to Import, will likely be helpful for both quality and for the necessary processing overhead, required to internally Scale the Images. For Scaling Still Images, this ARTICLE goes into more depth.
What are the pixel x pixel dimensions of the Still Images?
    Good luck,

  • Can I use Bridge CS4 Keyword File in PE10?

I have a nice structured keyword list in PE8's Bridge CS4; I want to use it in PE10's organizer. When I import photos, PE10 brings the keywords for those pix, but not structured with sub keywords.
    For example:
    Places
    North Carolina
    Chapel Hill

Thought that might be the case - remake it is then. Thanks Bob.

  • Choose different audio tracks in PE10 full version possible?!

Oky, I have tested this with Adobe PE10, but WHERE do I choose which audio track I want to import/use in the timeline?! Where can I see if the clip has more than 1 stream in Adobe Premiere Elements 10? I have tried looking in settings etc., but no luck. I KNOW that my video got 4 different audio tracks in it, but when I add the media to Adobe PE10 (it's a .m2ts-format file), only 1 stream (the DEFAULT audio stream, which is the WRONG stream) is what I get. Where are the other 3 audio streams, and how can I use them? It's nothing special about the clip itself. I can play the audio and video in the timeline, it just got the wrong audio stream...
I am asking because I see many articles/posts that mention you can do this in PE10, but I don't understand where... So far I have yet to find ANY video editing software that supports this.
And converting the audio FROM the .m2ts-file using a 3rd-party program is out of the question as well. If it does not work with PE10, then I have to find another solution, I suppose.

You do not have the option of choosing between the main track and the dub track from a video clip in Premiere Elements, Goodie. You just get the main track. So if that's what you're talking about, you'll need to look elsewhere. Though I'm not sure where because I don't know ANY video software that does this. What makes you think it's even available?
The exception is when you're shooting in 5.1 audio in AVCHD. If you've set your project up for 5.1 audio, you can control the level of each of the five tracks independently.

    Hi everyone.
I want to record my TV screen while playing videogames such as Wii and Xbox 360. I saw a few days ago that the most convenient solution is buying a Dazzle for Mac. It would work fine for me, if i'd live in USA... Can anyone help me find where i can buy this tool? Are there other devices that i could use? I am using a Macbook White and my TV is big and fat. Nothing HD, LED or else.
