PE11 Rip from DVD- putting a menu on- burning that to DVD ruins quality

First, I've read some things here and there, but can't find the exact same scenarios in other posts, although I'm sure this is a fairly common problem (SIAP):
Here is a summary of the issue:
1) Our guy produced a video for our organization and gave me a DVD-R of the 11 minute project. I imported this into PE11 and on the timeline it says .VOB. Now on the desktop, the 481 mb VTS_01_1 file properties state that it is 720x480, 29 fps... although I find it strange that the clip as imported into PE11 in properties in the project assets window says it's 23.976 frame rate. Making things more confusing (don't even know if any of this matters) is that in an instance of Share->Export to Computer, the "source" says the video is 1920x1080, 29.97 fps. Don't know if any of this matters...
2) Anyways, the reason I ripped it is for the sole purpose of creating a menu on the DVD. So I picked a "HD" template, imported my own JPEG on to it, then attempted as best I could to erase all the buttons except for "Play Movie." AGain, not sure if the Menu functionality has anything to do with the issue, but I figured I'd mention it.
3) I've tried several times burning the video with both DVD-R and +R using both NTSC Dolby and Widescreen Dolby to burn to DVD.
The resulting DVD has a degraded, fuzzy image and the black frame lines at bottom and top seem to bounce and jitter.
The image on the original DVD is clearly HD and looks great, without any bouncing, jittering, etc. Also, the DVD app i used to watch the original on my computer is the same as I used to watch my own burned DVD... So PE11 has clearly degraded the image, something is going on in the export.
Another thing worth mentioning is that as I look at the video footage in PE11 on full screen, I can see that even in PE11, the video quality is not the same as the original DVD and there are obvious artifacts and just nonsense in the picture... Not necessarily as bad as the burn, but similar.
I've done a little reading on these forums about .VOB files... I don't fully understand them. Is it that the image is messed up from the beginning with an import from DVD? IS there a way to do what I want (take hiqual video from a DVD, put a menu on it, then burn it back onto DVD?) with PE11? Or is the only way to make a burn from the original source file before it was burned the first place?

Please get a MediaInfo readout of your VOB at the onset to determine what you have, especially standard or widescreen.

Here is my take on your situation.
1. The Canon 6D can capture 1080p video (1920 x 1080 16:9 at 29.97 or 30 frames per second), but from what you wrote somewhere along the line someone put that through a video "authoring" program to convert it into DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc (720 x 480). At this point, we need to know standard or widescreen. Both standard and widescreen will be 720 x 480, but the widescreen will have a 16:9 flag included to stretch the video for display after encoding.
Question:
a. What is on that DVD disc....just a file name VTS_01_1 (file size 481 MB) or two folders named OpenDVD and VIDEO_TS? If you have a file, for Premiere Elements 11, you would use Add Media/Files and Folders to get the file in Project Assets. If you have the DVD disc in the DVD burner tray, you would use Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive to rip the VOB and get the VOB into the project.
b.Your project is going to get messed up and confusing, if you let the program set the project preset for you. You will most likely end up with the default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is inappropriate for your project. So, before thinking or acting on Get Media....open a new project, go to File Menu/New/Project and set the project preset in the New Project dialog for NTSC DV Standard or NTSC DV Widescreen depending on what you find beforehand about the properties of your VOB MediaInfo Then use Add Media/and the appropriate choice based on what I wrote above about VOB already ripped vs DVD-VIDEO ripping.
c. When you have your VOB on the TImeline with the appropriate project setting, right click the file in Project Assets and verify Premiere Elements 11's interpretation of the file frame rate and other to determine if it agrees with the MediaInfo readout. It would be very unusual if there was a differnce, but...
d. Whether you have a NTSC or PAL project, all the SD DVD Templates have a frame size of 720 x 576 (PAL sizing). The ones tagged HD have a 1440 x 1080 frame size. Right now I would advise you to stay with the SD ones, but not be afraid to experience with a HD choice if it appealing and see what happening during encoding.
e. In all this, you did not say what the duration is of this 481 MB VOB file. The standard DVD disc is spec'd at 4.7 GB/120 min. That 4.7 GB in reality is 4.3 GB. You will frequently see the recommendation "for best results, do not exceed 90 minutes on this standard type disc". When you have your DVD disc in the DVD burner tray and are in the burn dialog of Publish+Share/Disc/DVD make sure to check the Quality Area of the burn dialog for the Space Required and Bitrate reading (8.00 Mbps is the max reading).
Based on what you wrote, I suspect that most of your problems were related to incorrect project settings. By the way, if you want to get rid of a menu button text, most of the time double click the text to bring up the Change Text dialog, highlight the text there, hit the delete key of the computer, then hit the space bar or enter key.
If you are replacing the menu's audio, max 30 sec with looping. If you use motion buttons in the menu, max 4.9 seconds. After you get the details of the project setup OK, we can focus in more on the menus...number of Timeline markers etc, and customization of the menus from within the program.
Lots of details. The answers and successes will be in the details. All the contributors here have given you a lot of ideas for exploration and experimentation.

Firmware upgrade for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E to burn dual layer DVD?

I have a PowerBookG4 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E which it seems apple has disabled from burning dual layer DVD. I've read around that there are firware upgrades that can enable actions again. I can't find any for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E, though. Any ideas?

angie1976 you have me directly.
As stated in previous posts there have been several issues with the Matshita Optical drives that Apple has installed in there computers. Over time the problem has been discussed and it would appear that there are several things that come into play here.
Apple has made it so that many of the drives they intall are in fact not capable of there full potential.
It in fact boils down to an issue of Copywrite Infringment. Apple doesn't want to put itself in a position to be open to Lawsuits from the Motion Picture Industry.
Many of the drives that do not work up to there full potential have FIRMWARE updates that are offered by the manufacture to remedy this problem and some do not.
It has also been found that the casual user that burns DVD's isn't aware of the huige difference in the Format's available for DVD Burning. and the many limitations of these different drives as far as Media and Speed of Media is concerned. Many of the DL burners that were installed will not burn DL. Apple has had such a huge amount of dissatisfied customers that many that will take the time and if they still have AppleCare these drives will be replaced free of charge.

I also noticed that some others have chimed in as to the fact that Media was not the issue. This is not entirely true.

Let me see if I can shed some light on this issue, for you.
Maybe some others as well can.
There are several Applications that are standard programs that come with OSX.
Of these, several have the ability to burn a project.
iTunes....iMovie.....Disk Utility.
Each of the above mentioned applications were developed for a specific purpose. However, they are capable of doing more than the original developers intended.
The problem in my eyes is the lack of information for a new user to Mac.
In what one would consider the perfect world, you simply choose a project, drag it in to one or more of the applications mentioned above and simply click burn and you are finished.
This is not always the case.
Often users are left with the issue of no clear cut direction on how to use these different burning softwares, and the ability to have a clear cut step by step user interface.
All of the furnished OSX burning software is in fact usable and works well.
The problem is HOW TO USE THEM.
The more experienced users find this either to be a non issue or will take the time to work with these different applications until they figure out how to use them.
There are of course different Advertisements and FAQ's that cover these to some degree that leave users more confused than when they started.
One of the major issues that accompany this problem is this.
Not all Burners that Apple uses in there machines are the same.
Not all Burners will accept all the different Media's that are available on the market.
Thus leaving many users confused. Not having a clear cut understanding of what the difference is between these different Media's and there use.

Apple has found itself in a delima with the Motion Picture Industry, as well as The Music Industry over the issue of offering there users with the capability of copying Copyrighted material. Thus leaving them open for Law Suits.

It is almost impossible to cover all aspects of this issue on these forums.
There are of course different softwares available that make the burning experience much easier and user friendly.
Roxio is one of the industry leaders in the development of Mac compatible Burning Software. They offer 2 of the industry leaders in this area.
Toast-7 and Popcorn.
This solves only one portion of the problem. Both of these software offering give the user the ability to copy about anything.
However, there is so much controversy over the issue of Movie and Music copying, the manufactures of the Computers, and the Burners try to limit the users ability to copy these, and thus be clear of any Legal Issue.
Here again rises the problem of computer users being mad because the industry has placed limitations on there ability to use there product in a fast easy to use method.
Again there are work around to all of these issues.
The problem then becomes who out there is willing to tell us what is the easiest most trouble free method of using these computers, burners, software,and media.
The burner manufactures offer there burners.
To get them to work to there full potential the users then must search out the 3rd party Firmware updates that will enable them to work properly. This is not an issue with all burners but quite a few.
Most readers on these forums have read about the MEDIA compatibility and poor quality issues these are covered in a prior link.
To sum this up, the resources are available to do just about anything one wants to do in the copy area.
Not every copy problem is the same because of all the different elements that come into the equation, Burner, Media, Software, Firmware.
So if a user has a problem and needs the information and the resources to copy there projects whatever they may be.
Be through, give as much information as you can.
Keep it simple, No need for the use of exotic terms that most people don't understand anyway.
In-depth. Tell all aspects of the issue and what you have what you are using and what you want to accomplish.
If there is an answer out there.
Someone will Chime in.
The users on these forums for the most part are more than willing to share in there knowledge, free of charge.
One last thing,
When a user gives you an answer for you problem, for the most part they believe it to be a fact. Sometimes this isn't the case, we have all been guilty of, this is not done with malicious intent. It is done trying to help.
I personally have been misinformed, or tried a fix, that will work in one instance but not another. So tell all you can about your problem.

Can the LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive burn dual-layer dvds?

It's a LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive, I think it's part number is 575781-501. It came in my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-380t. I was customizable up to blue ray but I stuck with the standard. Now I'm not sure whether I should invest in Dual Layer DVDs, because I don't know if my drive is capable of writing to them. Does anyone know?

In Tiger, I had the ability to launch a quick slideshow from the Action pulldown menu. Did that get moved somewhere else? Or did Apple remove it from Leopard?

you have to press hold option. then the slideshow option will show up in the action menu and also the quicklook button will change to the slideshow button. even faster is to enter commandoptiony instead of using menus.

Icloud errors not syncing songs ripped from CDs

I've been an iCloud customer since November 2011. However, since converting to iCloud the songs I've ripped from my CD collection nor songs (.aac) that were purchased from Amazon no longer sync. iCloud errors out each morning, I'm asked to log off then back on (which I do dutifully) but the error continues. My music is flagged "Waiting" and so it does! Everything else works, which is totally aggravating since the problem is obviously itunes or a server side issues.
I've contacted support multiple times and the last "genius" stated that "I do not have the training or tools to assist you". That's about the nicest bugger off line I've ever heard!
Well months later and still no fix, and the issue lingers.
I was hoping soeone out there could direct me to a solution, contact, or a trueiTunes genius that could help.. Ill pay, I just want iCloud to work as it's designed to I'd be happy if it did that much!

Burned DVD's don't work, or skip in DVD player

When I create a DVD on my G5 I burn onto a DVD-R from IDVD. Often, when I give copies of the DVD's to people they report that it eitehr pixelates occassionally, or freezes up at the same point and they can not continue to watch it. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the 'usual' burn error problem.
You can try a different brand of writable media or create a disk image of your project (it's under File>Create Disk Image) and use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast Titanium 7 to burn the disk image to writable media at a lower speed (like 2x or 4x).
The problem is writing at higher speeds (or with marginal media) tends to increase the error rate of burned DVDs. Computer DVD players have a much higher error correction capability than most set-top DVD players (after all , you wouldn't want to loose computer data) and do a better job of playing writable discs.

ITunes burns incomplete data DVDs (without reporting error)

I have a playlist with 908 songs (3,63 GB) I want to copy over to a data DVD. When iTunes finishes burning the data DVD+R, I get only 272 files (1,09GB). iTunes does not report any error at all: it finishes burning without a problem and generates an .XML file listing only the files it did copy to the DVD.
Has anyone seen this? Any explanation or solution? I am using the latest version of iTunes (6.0.1) and, apart from this, do not experience any problem with the DVD recorder.

16:9 DVD created in iDVD plays cropped on Panasonic DVD player

I created a DVD from a 16:9 QuickTime movie using iDVD 7. Everything works fine when I play the video on a computer (Mac or PC), but when I play it on my DVD player (a recent Panasonic that plays all commercial 4:3 and 16:9 DVDs perfectly) it plays the video cropped to 4:3. In other words it completely loses the left and right edges.
I have a 16:9 LCD TV so I verified that the settings on the TV were fine and they were. I am certain that the image that the TV receives is already a 4:3 image, it isn't cropped by the TV.
I tried to change the settings on the DVD player manually to see if it was a problem with the player (although I doubted that to start with as I had no problems with commercial DVDs ever). It didn't matter if the DVD player was manually set to 4:3, 16:9 or Auto, all I could get was differently resized versions of the 4:3 cropped video. It appears that for the DVD player, the extra information outside the 4:3 box doesn't exist, it will only play the 4:3 part of the 16:9 video.
Does anybody know why this happens and how to fix it?

I think I figured it out.
Download myDVDedit from http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?pg=downloads
From iDVD save the VIDEO_TS folder (or copy it from your disc/disk image) to your computer.
Open the VIDEO_TS folder in myDVDedit
Use myDVDedit and change all of the VTS files to use an 16:9 auto Letterbox aspect ratio in the IFO section
Save VIDEO_TS from myDVDedit
Load up Toast and burn a new DVD from your VIDEO_TS folder.
I'll test this at home and let you know if it worked on my DVD player.

Can I burn onto a DVD+RW

I have finished my first iMovie and have saved into iDVD and when it asks for a disc, it says DVD-R. Am I to assume that the DVD-RW discs will not work? Thanks.

I think support for DVD-RW discs was added in iDVD 5.
Please note there is a difference between DVD-RW and DVD+RW. Check the specs of your burner.

Elements 9 Projects plays fine on computer however when burned to a DVD it drops the last part

years. I have now upgraded to Elements 9. I am having an odd problem with a project that I am working on. Everything seems to be OK on the EDIT
and on the DVD PREVIEW mode ; However when burned to a DVD, I am loosing the last part of the project, and the laat scene button does not take me to the correct scene, It takes me to the one just BRFORE it. When the burning process is done, it shows that it all went well. No error messages. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is causing this?

Question about burning dual layer DVD's

I've owned a 2012 iMAC for a few weeks, having owned a 2007 iMAC until it stopped working. For the 2007 iMAC it was able to burn CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD+R, DVD-RW,DVD+RW and DVD+R/DL. I never tried recording DVD-R/DL on that iMAC, since it was implied(in the list of useable blank media) that DVD-R/DL couldn't be used.
With my new 2012 iMAC,it seems that the situation is that DVD+R/DL can be used to burn "Burn Folders" of data, but can't be used to burn video material, and that if I want to burn video material requiring a dual layer disc, it should be DVD-R/DL. (maybe that is for the best, because DVD-R/DL has compatability with more non-computer DVD players than DVD+R/DL)
Does that sound correct to you? I guess I'll go out and buy a spindle of DVD-R/DL discs.

I burn dual layer DVDs all the time using iMovie 06 and iDVD 11 (on a Mac Pro).
I have since switched back to Snow Leopard. However, I found the above software to work perfectly with Lion.

Ripping from DVDs

I'm trying to put together a reel and have been supplied with a bunch of my footage on DVD. I use Handbrake to rip to avi and figure it's best to convert to DV in Compressor before operating in FCP.
I'm encountering a problem that Compressor only sees the first few seconds of the avi files so I end up getting just a few seconds of bars. Is this an issue with my capture settings in Handbrake?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a workflow for ripping from DVD? Should I be ripping to avi? Is Handbrake even the way to go? Should I try something else?

Using DVD footage in FCP

Apple TV speeds up video playback on files ripped from DVDs - it looks like it's being fastforwarded slightly.

I just set up my Apple TV 2, only to find playback issues from the start.
Whenever I try to play videos from iTunes, the playback is noticeably faster than it should be. It's almost as if the video is slightly sped up, and the audio is in sync with this. The aspect ratio is also very different on some of these videos (and this doesn't correct on my TV as it does on my laptop screen) - by which I mean that the picture appears stretched on some, but not others. These are files I have ripped from my DVD collection.
What can I do about this?

The message you are getting is about updating iTunes is for your computer, not the iPad. The current version of iTunes is version 11.
