PE6 Burning RAW files on CD problem

I am having a problem with burning my RAW (CR2) files on to a disk without them being converted to JPEG. I want to save them on a disk in RAW format so that I can get them off of my computer for space sake and still be able to edit them in RAW later. How can I do this??? I tried to transfer straight from photo file to my CD/DVD drive but it seems my drive can't recognize the CR2 format.
Your help is appreciated!!

It would help to know what the error message says.
Alternate method: In PSE, use File->Export on all the desired photos, select raw as the export format, direct the exports to a temporary folder, then use Windows to burn the CD.

You need a program that will burn data files to DVD or CD, that's all.
My computer came with Sonic RecordNow, yours may have that or possibly Nero.

• Is it possible to burn RAW files to DVD?

I'm trying to backup some images in RAW format, and although the burn process appears to go through its paces (progress bar, etc.), when I open the disk it doesn't show any photos. Can RAW files be backed up in this way?

What process are you currently using?
If you want to back up just the Raw:
Select the pics in the iPhoto Window
File -> Export
Set the *Kind: to Original*
Complete the export to a folder on the Desktop
Burn that with the Finder.

• CS4 MAC Canon G10 RAW file panorama stitch problem problem

Hi,
I was loading 5 RAW files into CS4 auto stitch. The file view fine a thumbnails in ACR 5.2 and Bridge but I noticed that when I was attempting to select which images to select for stitching in CS4 that the I could not see thumbnail detail in the selection view panel. After I selected the images I wanted by file name CS4 crashed when I tried to start the panorama stitching process... Anyone else had problems like this?
MacPro 2.66 GHZ dual core. 6GB RAM and Latest version of CS4, ACR on Leopard.

It's working fine on my machine running Tiger. Your setup is a lot more powerful than mine, and mine handles a 5-raw-image-file panorama fairly snappy.
Photoshop 11 ("CS4"). Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Which operating system are you using?
Most likely you need to update the camera raw plugin for photoshop cs6 using Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6.

• Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.
Thanks,
Nigel.
As far as Photoshop and ACR go, ALL raw files are treated as read-only.
Your original raw files remain untouched, no matter what you do to them.
Any adjustments you make to a raw file are kept only as metadata (flags, if you will) in that XMP side-car file. Every time you want to re-open that raw image file, ACR will reach for the XMP file and apply the adjustments automatically, transparently.
That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).
Thank you Adobe!

• Appending metadata to RAW files

Hi all,
I'm new to elements, so my apologies if this has already been asked.  I'm running elements 6 on a macbook pro, and it works fine ( the program, the macbook works fine too :-) ).  But suddenly, after a re-install, I can't append a metadata template to my RAW files in Bridge  anymore (was able to do this before the re-install).  It still works fine when the RAW is converted to a JPEG.  Can't figure out what the problem is.  I can't even update the metadata file in the metadata window anymore.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.
Steve G.

Hi,
Can't get into the forum at the moment (site not available message), I can't
remember if I purged or not.....one would assume that this could be the
case, seeing that even if I create a metadata template which I can edit it
always appears greyed out. (When I first installed the program, I could
append the metadata to the RAW files with no problem.  Now I can't even
enter data via the metadat tab   ).In the meantime, I've uninstalled and
then re-installed the whole program, but I still have the same problem. One
thing is strange though, when I run the 'update' function, it won't install
the newest camera RAW update (4.6 I think it was). Just to be sure, I'm
running a legal version of Elements 6 (supplied with a Canon printer I
bought just recently) on a macbook pro using Snow Leopard.
Regards, and many thanks for you patience,

• Opening RAW files in older CS3

I have an older version, PS3 Extended.  I have always opened RAW files with no problem.  Recently, a friend with a newer camera and newer version of PS gave me some RAW files to open, and my CS3 says "Could not complete your request because it's the wrong kind of document".  I am wondering if the problem could be that I have an old version of PS?  Thanks.

That's exactly the problem. It's all in the FAQ: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/311515
You need the DNG Converter to open a batch of newer raw files. If you need to do this regularly, you might need to think about upgrading or using Lightroom.

• Moving Raw Files

I'm brand new to Bridge, and my issue might reveal that...
I typically take pictures in RAW+JPEG, and so have a lot of pics that have a version of each file type. For reasons that would bore the heck out of you, I sometimes want to move the raw file but not the corresponding jpeg file to another folder; however, when i try to do that, Bridge automatically moves the jpeg anyway. (Method of moving: highlight the raw file(s), not the jpegs, drag it to the destination folder). Any way to keep it from doing that? By the way, I can move the jpeg and not the raw file without a problem, so what i've been doing is moving both first, then moving the jpeg back to the original folder. It's a pain I'd like to avoid if I can.

When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available.
When you drag from the iPhoto Window you get that Preview.
To get your Raws:
File -> Export and then in the export dialogue set the Kind: to Original
That will export your Raws.
If you process a Raw in iPhoto in older versions the results were saved in another file - tiff or jepg. Subsequent edits were carried out on these files. If you wanted to go back to scratch you opt for "Reprocess Raw."
In iPhoto 11, all processing is virtual, so every edit - in effect - reprocesses the Raw. So the command only applies to Raws imported and processed in earlier versions.

• Raw files in an event in iPhoto are not present in master file?

Hi all,
I keep my raw files in an external drive in iPhoto (9.5.1) library. I decided to move my library to Lightroom 5.7 via duplicating the master file of the corresponding event in iPhoto and taking this duplicate out of the iPhoto library conclusively to move to Lightroom. This worked perfectly but later I realised that two of my event files are not present in the master file. When I open iPhoto I can see and play around with these events of raw files with no problem at all.
- I searched through the each and every master file sub directory but couldn't find them.
- I used spotlight and could only find the .jpg versions of these raw files. I never converted them to jpgs before.
- The only difference from other events that I can think of is these two event files contain more than 1000 raw photos while the others contain less than 1000.
Running OS X 10.9.5. Any help would be appreciated.

When I open iPhoto I can see and play around with these events of raw files with no problem at all.
Select one of the photos from these events in iPhoto and use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original file".
Does this show the folder with the missing RAW files?
To migrate your original files to Lightroom you might consider to select the photos in iPhoto and to use the command "File > Export ". This way, iPhoto will find the originals for you, and it will be safer. You can be sure, that all selected photos will be exported, and you do not risk to corrupt your iPhoto library.

• Canon G16 Raw File completly shuts down the computer

I am using Aperture3.6 and Yosemite (completely updated) on a 4 year MacBook Air.
I have used Aperture and macs for many many  years and have been shooting pictures in RAW and editing them in Aperture for 8 years. I have a huge library of RAW files in my aperture library.
I have used Canon DLSRs for years and recently traded in my old Canon 550D for a Canon G16 (it is 5 days old!).  When I upload my pictures (RAW+JPG) into Aperture and try to edit or view them (not preview them) about 30% are corrupted (pink psychedelic or black). The others, I am unable to open. Aperture freezes up the entire computer and if I'm listening to music on iTunes the music starts crackling and stopping and then goes dead completely. I cannot forcequit the programs as the computer is completely frozen.
I have changed HD Cards and taken it to the camera shop and they cannot find any problem with the camera.
I've noted on the forum that in 2013/14 peopole reported a few problems with RAW files from the G16 but since then the RAW Compatability has been fixed to include the G16, and it appears no one else is having trouble.
When I reopen Aperture and go to other projects I am able to edit and view tthose raw files with no problem whatsoever. I've created two new libraries as a test (aperture and iphoto) and the problem persists.
Can anyone give me advice as to whether this is a camera issue or a software (aperture/iPhoto) issue or perhaps my old air needs renewing. But it seems strange that when the new RAWS fromthe G16 are opened the whole computer freezes and even effects I Tunes!!!!
What the F?
Nate

after much consternation I have discovered that the problem is APERTURE.  Despite claiming that the program is compatible with the G16 RAW files it really is NOT.  I had to download Canon's own photoediting and viewing software....and guess what no problem at all editing, viewing any of the files.
I tried them in Lightroom too and guess what...no problem at all!
So although Aperture has been like an old friend it is time to say bye bye and make the big trek over the Lightroom!
Sad but relieved.

• Pentax Super K100D RAW files not recognised by Lightroom

Hi all
Have tried to import Pentax .PEF files (RAW format) into Adobe Lightroom and via Adobe Bridge...no luck. It works with JPEG files, but I don't WANT to shoot in JPEG format!
Have reformatted the camera memory card, have 90GB left on my HD to perform the import, and the camera, computer and software is all current and updated.
I downloaded RAW Developer, and lo and behold, IT recognises the files and works on the RAW files with no problem...so it's not the camera, or the computer.
Everything is operating on a Mac OSX 10.4.1 (we don't have Leopard in Australia yet).
Any ideas/help appreciated.
FYI - I am operating Lightroom in TRIAL mode. Haven't purchased yet - and won't be until I can sort out this problem!

There's a list of the supported cameras here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
The 100D Super is new camera. There's always a delay between a new camera launch and Adobe providing support for the RAW profile.
You'll also see that OS X Tiger doesn't support it yet either: http://www.apple.com/aperture/raw/cameras.html.

• Importing RAW files with keywords from Bridge

Hi everyone,
I downloaded the trial version of Aperture and have now imported RAW files (Canon 20D) with keywords and IPTC data applied via Bridge.
The import of the RAW files was no problem however the files lacked the keywords and IPTC data, which I applied in Bridge.
I also tried to import JEPG files and here Aperture could show me keywords and IPTC data.
Why does this not work for RAW files? What do I have to do in order to get it to work?
Thanks in advance for your advise
/David

When you add metadata (keywords etc.) to most proprietary raw formats (including Canon .CR2 files), Bridge doesn’t know how to embed that data in to the file—Canon and other manufacturers haven’t told Adobe (or anyone else) what the structure of these raw files is and how metadata can be stored within the file itself. Therefore, Bridge creates a ‘sidecar’ file to go with the raw file: the sidecar file sits alongside the raw file, with the same filename and a .xmp extension. This sidecar file contains any metadata you may have applied, as well as adjustments you have made in Adobe Camera Raw.
Unfortunately, Aperture doesn’t read these sidecar files when importing raw files, so you lose any adjustments from ACR (not surprising, since Aperture is obviously a different raw converter to ACR so the adjustments would be different anwyay), but also you lose any metadata you may carefully have applied.
There may be an answer, however. But it’ll cost. That would be to use iView Media Pro (which has recently been bought by Microsoft, but a Mac version still exists). There is a 21-day free trial for iVMP—since my suggestion is to use it as a temporary conduit for importing all your existing raw files into Aperture, you won’t necessarily have to pay the £129 GBP asking price for iVMP (others can debate the morality of that statement, however; fortunately I already owned iVMP and so didn’t have to worry about such things). I believe iVMP can read the XMP sidecar files created by Bridge. Create a new iVMP catalogue with all your raw files which you want to move into Aperture. It should bring all your existing metadata into the iVMP catalogue as well.
Then, import all the raw files into Aperture. As you have found, they’ll be without any metadata. As long as the filenames are the same in both the iVMP catalogue and the Aperture library, you can use Adam Tow’s application Annoture to transfer metadata from the iVMP catalogue into the Aperture library.
Sort of circuitous, but possible. If only Aperture read the metadata from those sidecar files, eh? If I’m wrong in thinking that iVMP imports the XMP metadata, then what you can do is get Bridge to convert all your .CR2 raw files into .DNG files. If you don’t know about DNG, read about it at Adobe. But briefly, Bridge is able to embed its metadata into the DNG files and iVMP is able to read that embedded metadata when importing DNG files into the catalogue. I know that for certain: I used iVMP and DNG files (from my own 20D) before using Aperture; when I started using Aperture (which I love, now) I used Annoture to transfer all my metadata from iVMP into Aperture.
Perhaps someone else will explain this better than I.

• Treat JPEG files next to RAW files as separate photos? or How do you not download JPG's

Environment:
LR 1.1
PC: Windows XP SP2, Dual Core 6600, 4GB RAM
Camera: Konica-Minolta 7D shooting RAW and JPG (CF card has 3 files for each frame, RAW, JPE, THM)
Although I Imported my RAW files with no problem, I discovered that the Import also copied the CF card's JPGs to the same folder as my RAW files on the hard drive. So I set out to figure out how to import RAW into LR without also downloading JPGs to my hard drive. I have not succeeded at that and have added a, Delete of the JPGs from my HD before synching Metadata step, to my workflow, but I DID find some truly weird behavior.
The File menu dropdown offers two ways to Import from the card.
1) Import Photos from device which goes directly to the Import dialog where I have preview ON.
2) Import photos from disk . . .which goes to a file display of the CF card for file selections before going to the Import dialog. (Required if you want JPG only)
Also, if I click on the Import button to the left of the tool bar I am given a dialog box to choose:
1) M\(Camera or Card Reader) or
2) Choose Files..
These correspond to the same options that the File menu offers.
My results:
If you want to Import only RAW files use the Device option.
If you want to Import only JPG where you have RAW on your CF card use the Disk option and only select JPGs(with or without the preference switch set).
If you want to Import both RAW and JPG use the Disk option with the Preference option ON and select both JPG and RAW files.
But, I assumed (my error) that I could, using the Disk option, mix and match JPG and RAW selections.
THEN the strange stuff . . .
If in the disk option with the preference switch set ON, I selected just RAW or both RAW & JPG files on the CF card in the file selection dialog, the Import dialog always showed BOTH RAW and JPG files in the preview. If then, in the Import dialog for any specific file, I selected a RAW or JPG but not both, selecting RAW Imported a JPG file and selecting JPG Imported a RAW file. No kidding.
I ran this test three times. I dont consider this a big problem because there is a way to get RAW only, JPG only and both when needed, but someone could look at the code before the next release. (Maybe the shell game goes away in Pirate mode.)
My biggest disappointment is I could not find a way to Import RAW without copying a second file to the same folder on my hard drive which I will need to delete later. Maybe, next release. (Please)
For the development team, I offer my thanks for your significant advancement of digital photography.
For those that get to the bottom of this post, remember Rule 5.

>Speaking of which, WHY would anyone want to import jpgs alongside raws in Lightroom? I can't see any reason, and they just take up disk space. Am I missing something?
I'm not as gifted at file editing as many of you are, and often the jpgs I get from Canon or Nikon are much nicer than the raws. Sometimes I am sufficiently pleased with the jpgs that I just toss the raws. Sometimes I want to play, and the jpgs give me a target to shoot for and try to surpass.
Only when I really blew the exposure, not too common anymore, do I really need the raws to save what should have been a really great shot.
I understand the arguement for raw files. I just haven't found that they are automatically better than the jpegs without a lot of tinkering.

• PSE 10 doesn't recognize raw file

Have been using PSE 10 on a four year old Macbook pro with no problems.  Opens RAW file with no problem.  Just installed the same PSE 10 on a new iMac, and PSE 10 editor says it can't open file because it doesn't recognize the file.  Any suggestions?

The canon 5d mkIII requires the 6.7 camera raw plugin and pse 10 does support the camera 6.7 plugin.
When you went to Help>Updates from within the pse 10 editor, was there an updated version of camera raw listed for installing?
