PE7 and 'missing Codec'

Hi,
I have been using PE1 for years, have upgraded to PE7 recently.
Editing previously ripped mpg file has been troubl4e free. However, today I captured new avi files, using PE7, from my Sony DV camera into a new project. This video played fine during capture but now, as I pull them into the timeline I get "This file type is not supported, or the required codec is not installed".
Please help.
Andy

Andy,
Great news. At the very least, you now have a wonderful and useful utility, G-Spot. I could not be without it.
The error message was probably a miscommunication between the OS and PrE. PrE got an error message (location of the Assets), that it could not fully process, so it looked down its list of errors, and just said, "hey, maybe it's the old CODEC issue," and showed that. This happens all too often, especially with the authoring phase in PrE and also Encore.
Now, back to your G-Spot screen: I noticed that the Audio was 32HKz. Is that the output from your camera? The reason that I ask is that 32KHz material, even PCM/WAV (right choice there) can present issues. It would be better to use 48KHz, if at all possible. If not that, then the CD rate of 44.1KHz would be better than 32KHz. If that is the ONLY choice that you have, and you're not having Audio issues, just be patient, when you Import these files, as the necessary Conforming process might take longer - be patient, until that Conforming completes.
When using external HDD's, I strongly recommend going into the OS on any machine, that that HDD might be connected to, and setting a permanent drive letter to it. This MUST be done in the OS. I use a ton of FW-800 externals, and set their unique drive letter in the OS of each of my machine. I also started with drive letter Z:\ and worked backward. As my workstation has a lot of internal HDD's and burners, I did run out of letters, but because I label each external with its drive letter, know to NOT hook up both of my Z:\ drives at the same time. Other than that, no issues at all.
Having the same drive letter will also make certain that you do not Open a Project, and have PrE not be able to find the links in the .PREL file. When that happens, PrE will try to help you find the new location, but if it is likely to change on every boot up, you end up doing a lot of unnecessary work.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Problems mastering to dvd and missing codecs

I am having problems mastering to dvd with the mpeg 2 dvd option and also missing codecs, anyone can help me? new to cs5 so probably something I am doing wrong when going to export then selecting option mpeg2 dvd and select drive for output,it burns and then wont play back even though its burned okay...using tons dvds and wasting them, and getting rather frustrated...no idea how to use encore yet as in menus and stuff as used the old version of elements and 1.5 before upgrading ...so help me please

Assuming that you have the full-paid version, and not the trial, look to see if Transfer Activation is grayed out?
Try Importing a simple MP3 Audio file.
It sounds like you have experienced the "revert to trial" of the full-paid version, so that you now have zero MPEG-2 support.
The steps to correct this are:
    1.) Deactivate (probably grayed out)
    2.) Uninstall
3.) Run Adobe Clean Script CS5 several times, rebooting between each run.
    4.) Install CS5
    5.) Instantly update, before launching
    6.) Activate
    7.) Launch and test.

    First..
    1. Have you updated from 13 to the 13.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update. If not, please do so.
    2. Do the problems exist if you disable the antivirus and firewall(s)?
    3. Are you running the program as Administrator? Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer?
    4. Have you refreshed the Online Services using Premiere Elements Editor Edit Menu/Preferences/Web Sharing?

6.Is your video card/graphics card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
    7. Lots more we could go through such as deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if necessary, the whole

But, I think that you have enough things going on here to warrant an uninstall, free ccleaner run through (regular cleaner and registry cleaner parts) and then reinstall with the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.

  • Missing codec and moving projects between different computers

    Hi,
Im a real rookie when it comes to premiere... and i have 2 problems.
First off i just want to know the best way to move a project between two computers... Usually when i move the folder and try open it all the links to the different movie files dont work, so i have to go through and select each one manually. There must be a way to get around this...
Second off i have a problem with importing my mac mov (i used iMovie to move the files from the video camera, which is a Sony HDR-HC3) files into premiere on the pc, it claims the codecs are missing. I have installed quicktime on the pc and i can play the movies fine, but they wont import into premiere because of the missing codec. Why?

See the responses to your duplicate post.

  • After upgrade to OS X missing Codecs (Microsoft Video1 and .asf) **please help**

    Hi all,
I made several videos using Microsoft Video 1 and .asf source data. After I upgraded my MAC to the latest OS suddenly no import is working and no codecs are found. I tried to load some codecs from web pages, but with no success. So I installes CS5 again and still no import works. Even existing videos show missing media information in a project.
    Can anyone help me???
    Dirk

What system did you upgrade from?   Do you have Time Machine running?
For the scanner you might try VueScan. It works with my older Canoscan 8600F scanner.  You can run it in demo mode to see if it will work with your scanner.  If VueScan doesn't recognize the scanner try downloading the 32bit version.  That's what I had to do before it would recognize my scanner.  And have the scanner turned on before launching VueScan.
For the printing you might try the Gutenprint for Mac OS X - GIMP-Print - SourceForge drivers.  Have worked for many.

  • Sudden Increase in Missing Codecs

I have been working on a documentary shot on different media and have never once had a missing codec error.  This past week, after assembling a rough cut of the trailer from all the assorted sequences the 'codec could not be found' error message starts cropping up and is rapidly spreading and I can't determine why or how to fix it.  I have not introduced any new sort of footage the sequences hadn't already had - and what gets me is that previously fine sequences, when I go back to tweak the colour in FCP for example, then have codec errors too.
Most of the footage was shot on DV cameras, but it seems to be dogging the clips that are either 720 or 1080p.  I reemphasise these clips have rendered dozens of times before.  I'm drawing a blank on this one.  All suggestions welcome, please, it keeps crashing!

We are having the same issue with dropped calls.  I have an IPhone 4S and my husband has an IPhone 4.  This has become increasingly worse.  We never had these problems in the past.  We have updated our software and towers but nothing helps.  Something is going on with the signals!

  • Missing codec in Media Player to play LabVIEW training video over Web

I get a "missing codec 130" message when I try to run LV training video from NI website. The error link takes me to MS site but codec is not available for download (apparently). WM player is configured for auto download of codecs cant find it. I have re-downloaded WM player twice and also run windows update.
Any ideas what to do next?

    Hi mg,
After googling around, it appears as though "codec 130" is referring to an ACELP Sipro codec.
If you enable codec download in WMP, the codec should be installed automatically when you play the video. However, if it does not, then it's possible that the codec may already be there and there may be an issue with the codec already installed.
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#wmv is a link about installing/downloading this codec.
I'm not sure if you've tried this yet, but is it possible to uninstall WMP first and then reinstall? Also, I would maybe look into finding ways to uninstall/unregister codecs to see if we can reload the codec.

  • FCP WON4T OPEN THE TIMELINE. QT  PROBLEM , MISSING CODECS

    thx for the reply,
i tried to downgrade QT version because of my MC soft that supports only 7.3. just got FCP 6 that, came with QT 7.5.5.
i trashed many QT files, hoping to prevent any conflicts with 7.3 (like in the old days)
now i can't even open a seq in FCP. project opens fine but with no timeline and only the viewer window.
when i click on a seq i get this message. "can't find the codec. "you may use a compression mode without the good card" (i'm translating from french).
    any idea?
that'll teach me to go back and forth bet avid and fcp. gotta pick one.
    thx again

hi there and thx for the help.
here's what a pop window said when i went to seg/settings "missing the 1:1 10 bit compressor", then the seq setting window appeared and i changed the codec to mpeg-4. the TL and canvas reappeared. i do have to render the video tracks.
here's what the QT movie footage infos says: "uncompressed 10bit 4.2.2 integer (Big Endian) Timecode. in the timeline when i check the properties it doesn't say anything other than it's ntsc ccir 601 26,9 mo/s nothing next to compressor unlike other shots.
thx a lot, at least i got my tl back.
how should i set my seq settings when i have different sources so i don't have to render all the time?
do i have to reinstall fcp6 to get these missing codec back or reinstall the os . can i just do an ARCHIVE AND INSTALL?
    thx

  • Trial Software - Missing codec questions

Currently using PPro 6.5 and tempted to try CS4 and then CS5 when available to test to see if its worth upgrading.
Read on the FAQ - "some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version of these products"
First question - What are the titles of the missing codecs if that doesn't just mean the standard mp4/H264 codec which just needs QuickTime to be installed ?
Second - Do any of the old codecs need to be upgraded from the ones I use in Pro 6.5 to use CS4/CS5 - if so which ones need upgrading and to which version ?
My Video cam (Panasonic S15) uses a MPG format (not mp4) so I would like to test the new software versions with correct codec to compare outputs to that of PPro 6.5
Thanks for any help or details you can post

All of the missing MPEG CODEC's should be Adobe MainConcept. I think that all of the included (in the full-paid version) CODEC's are from MainConcept.
If one needs to test with MPEG footage (a very common need), then the 30-day, money-back guarantee is the way to go. One buys the full version, installs it (after first uninstalling any trials and running the appropriate Adobe Clean Scripts several times), tests it for < 30 days, and if it is not what they are looking for, then ship it back and request the full refund.
Good luck, and glad that you at least found the MPEG limitation - too many others do not.

  • Exporting....Best and wost codecs?

    Hey everyone,
I've recently entered into the world of shooting most of my video on still cameras, such as the canon t2i, 7d, and 5d mark 2. For the most part, the footage has come out great. I was just wondering if anyone could help me with exporting and what codecs does everyone seems to use? I've been following Vimeo's online contest "Beyond the Still" which is actually sponsored by canon. All the contest entries are shot with canon still cameras and some of the footage looks amazing. This leads me back to my initial question, how do you think most of the entries within this contest are exported?
The way I have been exporting most of my videos out of final cut has been using the quicktime conversion, then choosing the h.264 codec and sliding the compression quality bar to best. I'm aware choosing how to export a video is dependent on how the video will eventually be used, i.e. on the web or on a dvd. however I was just wondering if I was missing anything, or what most of you are using as far as codecs go. Any and all input would be appreciated!
If any of you are unaware of the "beyond the still" contest I had mentioned and would like to check it out, here is the link.

Disk space is always a consideration, especially when the file that you've shot with your Canon DSLR is taking up just a few hundred megabytes worth of disk space and will jump up to gigabytes worth after you've transcoded it.
If you're feeling that Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) is overkill and you're not doing an offline/online workflow, I'd pick Apple ProRes 422 over Apple ProRes 422 (LT).
Furthermore, if storage space is a big issue, definitely look into an offline/online workflow.
Apple ProRes 422 (LT), like Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy), is a great choice for your offline edit. At roughly 101 Mbps for 1920x1080 at 60i, it offers good image quality with modest storage requirements (about 70% that of Apple ProRes 422). However (and this is a HUGE however), you want to do your online edit with Apple ProRes 422 (roughly 145 Mbps) or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) (roughly 220 Mbps) once you've locked picture and then proceed with your color correction as these two codecs will hold up much better to everything that happens to your footage in an online edit as well as after you've generated an edited master (like encoding for Blu-ray, DVD-Video, Netflix, YouTube, Flash Video, iPhone video, etc., etc.). I'd only use LT for online editing if you and/or your client find the picture quality acceptable for your final cut, that alpha channel support isn't needed, and you don't mind the greater compression artifacts that are going to get introduced any time you encode your LT edited master to another format.
While HQ may seem like overkill (especially when you consider that the camera original is very heavily compressed 21 Mbps or less footage), it's really just right for what's going to happen to the footage as it continues on it's way to your audience.
    Just some food for thought.

  • Audio out of sync and missing

I have several clips from my Panasonic LX-5 (720P). I created a new project (CS 5.5) and imported the clips. When I play the file directly from Windows Explorer, all is well. However, in the timeline, the audio is way ahead of the video and then part way through a clip, the audio disappears altogether. Also, the line at the top of the sequence is yellow (above transitions, it is green). I thought maybe the final exported file would be fine, but it had the audio out of sync and missing in the same spots, too.
Any ideas what's going on here?
    Thanks,

  • Missing Codec Error?

Hey final cut people! I got a big problem!
I have a project in Final Cut Pro 7.0, and every time I open a project (any project, or just the application itself via the dock), I get an error message saying "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without a corresponding hardware card." Then, after clicking "OK", I am greeted to a half-open project: the Browser and Viewer are open to the project, but the timeline and canvas aren't open, and are greyed out in the "window" menu. Thus, final cut is inoperable. I can open a clip in the browser and play it in the viewer, but that's about it.
All my footage is shot with a Nikon D5100, 1080p .MOV's.
My computer is a Late 2008 iMac, with 4gb of RAM and 175gb of free space on both my harddrive and external harddrive. It's running Lion 10.7.1
My final cut is version 7.0 and I am not able to update it (long story, I don't wanna get into it).
Quicktime player is acting normal, I am able to open the files in finder and play them in Quicktime, so it seems that any missing codecs aren't affecting it. I looked at other answers on here and they didn't seem to help. I looked in the Quicktime folder in ~/Library to check my codecs, and there are so many, I'm not sure if anything's missing.
This problem is very sudden, I haven't touched my Library folder in months and the last time I opened final cut, a few weeks ago, all was well. I am in dire need of a fix pretty soon, thanks in advance for all your help!!!

    Convert the material to ProRes.
Drag your h.264 file into Compressor's Project window and drop it on the bar that says "drag settings and destinations here"
    Go to the "settings" window.
Drill down to Apple>Formats>Quicktime>Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
Drag it over and drop it on the window where your you put your original file.
    Set a destination.
    Click submit.
This will transcode your h.264 to ProResLT. bring that file into FCP and life will be good. If you have dozens of these files, Compressor will easily handle batch processing.
While Compressor is cranking away on your file, open up the Compressor help file and read up. It is a very powerful utility.
    good luck,

  • Missing Codec in PrE 9, but not 2 or 10?

I've browsed the forum about missing codecs and AVIs, but I'm still confused. I have an old Canon S3IS that saves video as .AVI. I have no problem using those files in PrE version 2 & 10, but when I try to open them in PrE 9 I get the "not supported or missing codec" message and they won't import. Question: Why does version 2 & 10 work but not 9? ...And what is the easiest fix - download a codec pack or a video converter (hopefully a free one)?
(Note: Running PrE 2 on WinXP, PrE 9 on Win7x32 Home Premium, and PrE 10 on Win7x64 Ultimate).

Please do not EVER download a codec pack !!!
