PE7 - AVCHD user's first look

I've been using a variety of AVCHD programs for nearly a year now to edit clips from a Panasonic SD5. I've also tried some trials without purchasing them. I've not tried the most costly, just those suitable for someone chiefly producing domestic-type projects.
Here's my take on Premiere Elements 7 totally from that standpoint, and based at least initially very much on first reactions. Oh, I should add that the most recent version of PE I have is version 2.
Installation - no obvious problem.
First reaction to the interface - not as "noddy" looking as some in this league.
I'm following my nose. Opening existing AVCHD clips stored on my hard drive. When I attempt to open them I get a message requiring activation. At once, a problem - this version isn't listed on the activation page. Well, I tell it I've got the previous version and it gives me an activation code. The program accepts it. I have to say that normally such activation procedures are completely automatic - this seems a bit crude.
Good, there's the six clips. They appear on the "organise" page in reverse time order. I think this is normally a Windows problem (XP Pro here on a quad core PC). I've now dragged them one by one into the sceneline.
I've now created a disc menu (just grabbed the first one) and click on "Share". Burn to DVD, select the AVCHD preset - er... there is no AVCHD preset. Well, looks like all else has failed and I'll have to read the manual.
That's odd - there's no reference to burning AVCHD onto DVDs. I can't believe this can't be done in PE7 - it's a standard feature in all other such programs and (after many months of interacting with others on sundry video forums) the most popular way of outputting AVCHD projects. Well, I guess I'm missing an obvious option here, so meanwhile I'll have to go about things another way.
In the "Share > PC" page I have now found an option to output to H.264 in the same format as the original footage. Set that running and the time to complete the 2.5 minute project with no effects or transitions is given as about 9 minutes. Well, that clearly shows that the clips are being transcoded unnecessarily, as in a non-transcoding AVCHD process (in other software) the task would take much less than a minute. Not good.
Once I've got the render done I guess I'll have to fire up another app to get it onto a DVD to check on my PS3/Bravia system. And as it's been transcoded I'll have to check it with deep suspicion.
I'm kind of hoping that someone is going to point out that I've gone at this much to hastily and that I'm missing some options, but at first glance Adobe, coming late into the AVCHD game, haven't taken the opportunity to leapfrog the others in the market by providing what the market is asking for, namely non-transcoding of unchanged clips together with a 'serious' editing environment. No, I've not even touched on the editing side because it's fallen at an earlier fence. And if, as it seems at first glance, you have to use a competitive app to actually get your AVCHD project onto an AVCHD DVD, then the editing side would have to be pretty damn good to get people to not simply handle the whole project in that other program. That editing side I will explore as soon as time allows - will it be so good as to make the user forgive the basic shortcomings (as I see them) I've identitified?

If you select PCM then you cannot have multiplexing "on", so you end up with a video file and an audio file. To be honest I haven't tried simply offering that to the PS3 and seeing whether it would treat them as a pair to play, but I'd doubt it.
Meanwhile however I have made some progress!
What I have now found to work well is a procedure based on advice in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_mkv_to_avchd_for_ps3_and_blu-ray.cfm - but there's one small thing you have to do in PE7 first.
The nice thing is that the two small programs used in the procedure are freeware or donationware,
and the output from PE7 is not rerendered. The downside is that you don't get menus this way. If you want full disc authoring, use a suitable not-free program.
Anyway, the crucial thing is to use "Share > Personal Computer > H.264 " (pick your size and frame rate) and then click on the "Adavanced" button, then the "Multiplexer" tab, then the "None" button - so that the video and audio will not be merged in one file but will end up in separate video and audio files.
These files (yourfilename.mv4 and yourfilename.ac3) should be added to the Input file list of the 'tsMuxeR' (you can drag them in) and then you can either click on the "M2TS muxing" button in its output section, or on the "Create Blu-ray disk" button. Then press "Start muxing" and within a very short time, your file or folders will be finished.
If you created an m2ts file, you can burn that to a DVD as data and the Playstation 3 should play it as a standalone file, or you could copy it onto the PS3 hard drive.
If you created Blu-ray folders, you can burn those to a normal DVD using ImgBurn as detailed in the second page of the tutorial whose link I gave above. The PS3 will then treat that as a Blu-ray disc and I suspect many other Blu-ray players will too.
In the next day or two I will set out these procedures in more detail and with better presentation in a form suitable for adding to the FAQs for PE7. When set out on the page it sounds like hard work, but actually it's very quick and easy. But no, Adobe, that doesn't get you off the hook of needing to add AVCHD DVD support natively to PE7!

  • AVCHD Users new help--Neo Scene

All you AVCHD users with processing problems maybe this is your inexpensive solution from CineForm.
"That's why I'm so excited about the new "NEO Scene" plug-in from CineForm. It allows you to edit HDV and more importantly AVCHD much more efficiently, without the need for a super fast computer. For $99 (intro special) you can add it to Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas and your editing of AVCHD footage becomes much smoother and easier. Hopefully well see CineForm add support for more applications in 2009, and perhaps we'll even see the software vendors integrate this type of technology directly into their products."
    http://www.videoguys.com/cineform.html
And no, I am not connected with either firm. If you get this software plug-in and try it let us know your results.
I just read the fine print--CS4 support WILL be available second half of January 2009!!!

Seems great in theory, but it still doesn't offer an efficient editing workflow. You still need to transcode the AVCHD, or HDV files to Cineform AVI, which will take some time, and the resulting AVI files will be "larger than your source camera files," to quote Cineform directly. Sounds a lot like the free application that MainConcept offers for AVCHD transcoding, which in turn converts the video to DVCProHD, also a 4:2:2 video format.
So, unless you are doing some intensive color correction and can benefit from the added color space, AND you have the time to transcode all of your footage, I personally would rather invest in hardware which will allow me to edit the video formats natively. I have no problems what so ever editing native AVCHD in CS4 with bit rates 17mbps and lower. It's only when I attempt to edit footage shot in the 21mbps bit rate that it begins to react more sluggish, but in time that will improve within Premiere, just as it has with HDV.
You also have to remember, conversion does not equal acquisition. In otherwords, if you are shooting something in HDV, or AVCHD 4:2:0 and convert to a format like DVCPRoHD 4:2:2, you aren't all of a sudden going to have magical 4:2:2 image quality. The image is still 4:2:0, it's just now a file format that has 4:2:2 color space. It would be the same as shooting something in SD and then uprezzing to HD. Yeah, I now have a true HD image, but the video sure looks soft.

    Hi,
In Email Definition you can select required field values from Variables section.
For example: User Profile Information and then select User Login.

This is a known issue with the v25 Adobe Content Viewer. It is fixed with the v26 version, which is currently awaiting approval from Apple. If you have a Pro or Enterprise subscription to DPS, you can build a custom Adobe Content Viewer.

Thank you.  I just followed those steps and it worked.  One thing that confuses me though.  When I right click on the sequence i want to copy in the Browser, and go to Settings, I am expecting that I am going to see what the current sequence is set at-- like what format you had selected before in the Easy Set-up.  But you don't see anything of the sort (those actually appear to be under "Item Properties".  Instead you only see another button "Load Sequence Preset...", and when you hit that, you only see whatever it is you currently have your Easy Set Up set to-- not the actual properties of the sequence.  But at that point, (I've been told) it makes no differnce to change it anyway since the sequence as already been created.  But in fact I have experimented with changing the "Load Sequence Preset" for the new copied (correctly per your instruction) and it does make a difference-- it messes it up in the same way it was messed up when I was trying to copy it my way.  Fair enough, I just won't do that anymore, but it does beg the question what is the proper usage of the "Load Sequence Preset..." under sequence settings.  Do you know?
I know this is getting down to minutiae.
    Thanks again.

Also imagine, it is dinner, and the after dinner movie is downloading. The nearest movie house, or rental store is many, I mean many miles away. I know of these places and the people that live there. • [SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs.  Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc.  Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

    password change by them.
And we'd like to disable it REGARDLESS of their activity.
All the tips and scripts I've found look for 'inactivity', date created etc.
Only parameters I need are 30 days AFTER the first log in. Accounts might be created 60 days before actual use, but still need to be disabled 30 days after their first successful log in.
Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

I don't think you're going to get the kind of solution you want via scripting. As jrv noted, usually this kind of issue is managed by using account expiration and password expiration. If that won't work for you, then I would recommend looking into supported
third party tools that can help you get where you need to go.

As Bill points out you  need to look into third party tools.  If there is any legitimate legal or industry need for this then there wil be third party tools.  Having worked in medical software systems \I can tell you there is not. There are
old systems that use now-obsolete mechanisms that do things similar to what you are asking.  They are no longer usable.
I think if you sat down with those asking you to do this and had them get the actual industry and government rules on the table you would see that this is not what they are asking you to do.  It aslo doesn't make much sense from a technical standpoint.
Just set the password expiration.  That is what it is designed for. To force reauth just set the account so the user cannot set the password.  Use the reauth web page to allow the user to set a new password.  Use the corporate disclaimer
or a desktop link to notify users what to do when the password expires.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • AVCHD User Clip Name Recognition in Prelude

I am shooting on a Panasonic Ag-af100 and I have used the P2 Viewer Plus app to load custom metadata onto the camera. I set a name in the "User Clip Name" field.
I can see this custom name when previewing the AVCHD file in Quicktime Player, but Prelude CS6 reverts to the numbering beginning at 00001.
Is it possible for Prelude to use the customized name field in the transcoding/copying process?

    Hi -
Prelude CS6 does not have support for that type of renaming.
Prelude CC 2014 introduced additional file renaming on ingest options that allow you to specify the starting incremental count. It does yet provide the ability to get this starting value from existing metadata, however (it must be entered by you). That is a good feature request though and we are looking into it.
    Hope this helps!

  • First look

    - No formatting of items ( colors, fonts etc.) -> terrible looking reports.
    - You cannot resize columns -> too large reports!
    - I didn't find a way to change column headings.
    - You cannot change report titles, headers and footers. Where is a "Page setup"?
    - Printing doesn't work properly and there is no preview option.
    - No Graphs.
    - No exceptions.
Sorry to say, but i'ts not very useful yet.

The focus of the first release Discoverer on the web is to provide a highly interactive, scaleable, robust, distributed computing architecture. Rather than take a windows architecture and place it on the web (which would give more initial functionality but would not scale, a potentially difficult downstream issue for a customer) we rewrote the server to ensure true web scalability. Now this work is completed we can easily add formatting and reporting extras quickly later this year.
We feel that Oracle is the only company in this market to spend time and effort ensuring that existing customers don't get stranded by the wayside in order to make a quick profit in the market -- Discoverer is the only Business Intelligence tool that enables customers to share workbooks (reports) between their windows and web environment and modify them in both seamlessly. The look-and-feel of the web product is also consistent with the current Windows version to ensure that customers can move to the web with no re-training required.
To respond to your points specifically:
    1. It is possible to change the formatting of items using Tools-Options. This sets up default formats which are then applied as you build the report. We readily agree it would also be nice to change the font dynamically, and this functioality will be available as part of a larger set of reporting features later this year.
    2. Resizing columns dynamically is an HTML (web) issue. There are no BI products on the web today which enable this specific piece of functionality. In the next release you will be able to do this in Discoverer as we incorporate the standard capabilities and common look-and-feel of Oracles' Business Intelligence Java Beans. (These beans are also being incorporated into Oracle's Applications, Oracle Reports and all Oracle Express Products. They will also be available to customers as an add-in to JDeveloper. This ensures that all Business Intelligence Solutions (whether from Oracle or built stand-alone) will have the same look-and-feel, reducing training costs for customers.)
    3. Column heading, reports, charts, titles etc are part of the Reporting release later this year.
There is a large amount of functionality in this release that you can't find anywhere else on the web. These include:
    - Query Prediction
    - Summary Redirection
    - User-defined Calculations
    - True middle-tier scalability
    - Oracle Applications Security (Responsibilities, Sets of Books etc)
    - Shared workbooks between the windows and web environment
    - Shared metadata between the windows and web environment
    - Integration with WebDB
    - Export formats
    Thanks,
