PE7: Split screen/picture in picture jerkiness problem?

I'm using Premiere Elements 7, creating a video that displays multiple videos at once. I tried:
Splitting the screen into four boxes of same size (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right), each filled with its own video
Having one main video with 3 picture-in-picture windows overlaid on top of the main

In both cases, after I rendered work area, I see the video on Track 1 and sometimes Track 2 become very jerky, like skipping backwards and forwards by themselves. Exactly the same issue also when I export into final video. The only way I could solve this issue reliably is by decreasing the number of simultaneous videos/windows to two.
I have also tried this on another machine that has Premiere Pro CS4, resulting exactly the same issue. Very confusing since at least Premiere Pro should be able to do this just fine.
Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? FWIW, all my sources are AVCHD files from a Canon HF100, and the project is a 1080 30i.

I don't think this is a hardware issue. It's not about trying to preview in realtime (although the bug shows up there too, after rendering work area). I can wait as long as I need if that's what it takes. But this problem is in the final render result. Yes, I do have an i7 setup for this: Core i7 920, 6GB DDR3 1600, ATI 4830 512MB, and disk load spread out among: 1x 1TB 32mb cache, 1x 750GB 32mb cache, 3x 500GB 16mb cache. They're not in RAID setup, but again, I can live with the current rendering time, which is more CPU-bottlenecked than disk-bottlenecked.
This bug also exists in Premiere Pro CS4 when I tried it on another machine with that app (I myself don't have CS4).
I rendered a short, lower resolution video to show how this bug looks like.

Notice the main video in the background. It becomes jerky from time to time when there are more than one PiPs. Take a look around 0:20 where it becomes even worse after the 3rd PiP shows up.

"24" style split screen effect

First of all a huge thanks to the Apple community, your helpfulness with all things Mac is one more reason I prefer Apple to Windows!
My question: I am pulling in video from an event where several different cameras shot the same thing from different angles. I would like to use a split screen/ picture in picture solution similar to that found in the Fox show "24" the gist of which being I have several clips playing on a black background so that I can show multiple perspectives at one time.
I am no pro at this sort of thing, I don't own any high end video solutions just iMovie. If I must buy some sort of plugin or software it needs to be no more than about $100 and easy to use. If it's more than that I'm going to need to know there's more features (who wants to put down 250 so they can get only one more effect?) The plugin from "Stupendous" software doesn't really fill the need for me, plus it's for older versions of iMovie anyway.
Can anyone offer a solution?

I would mostly consider to use a 'real' editor.. spend 199$ on FinalCutExpress, invest 2 months of studying a book from FCE mastermind (and forum member..) *Tom Wolsky* - and you do like 24 ...

My macbook boots up get a screen picture then screen goes blank, when boots up I get the sound then a screen then screen goes black is this a battery problem or something else?

It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your computer to your desktop. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening named:

How do I do picture in picture or split screen?

I have a number of training programs but nowhere can I find out how to do picture in picture or split screen. Can any one help please

Thanks again for your help but one thing puzzles me. If i crop the two pictures then they reduce to half the size of the viewer screen, which seems logical to keep the perspective correct. I must be doing something wrong and I cannot see if you crop how yo can have a full screen picture that isn't distorted.

Split screen and picture-in-picture

So I just ordered a MacBook Pro with Final Cut Express preinstalled. I read a list of its impressive features and was so excited to use it.
Now that I've opened it up though, I realize I have no idea what I'm doing! Could someone please give me some assistance? I would especially like to know how to create split-screen or picture-in-picture videos, how to do color and brightness/contrast adjustments, and how to save the final product. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, thanks for any help ...

This example applies to resizing and animating (moving) the clip.
Double click a clip to load it into the viewer. Move the playhead in the timeline to where you want the effect to start. In the 'motion' tab, click the diamond shaped button to indicate the point at which the effect will take place.
Move the playhead along a couple of seconds then adjust the 'scale' value to around 50. You will see a keyframe automatically being added. Move the play on again and change the value again to 25 for example. Repeat this at will then render the effect - 'alt' (or 'opt') R - before previewing it in the timeline.
Different values and effects can be keyframed. For your next experiment, try using the 'desaturate' filter (from 'video filters') and change the values in the 'filters' tab after double clicking the clip.
P.S. some keyframing features are not available in FCE - I don't know which as I'm using FCP.
You'l probably be best advised to have a bit of time with the manual and books previously recommended. Do a search for tutorial too as there are a number of useful ones on this forum.
Another tip, if you want to know something specific its usually recommended that you perform a search in the relevant 'Pro Apps: Video' forum - many of your queries as a beginner will already have been asked and it's generally regarded as good form to check there first.
experiment a bit too - it's a great way of learning what and how the filters/effects work.

27" iMac split screen problem?

I went through the other threads but did not see a similar issue to this. I've had my iMac for a couple of weeks now with no problem. Today I was using it and this thick red/purple vertical stripe appeared all the way down the monitor, seemingly distorting my background image. After a few minutes the red bar went away but my screen now looks like a split screen with the left side being slightly darker than the right. The split screen only impacts the coloring, the Icons and everything still show up in the correct place. Has this issue been seen by anyone else?

Why my screen picture changes every time I open my computer even if I've made a choice for a screen picture

Even if I've made a choice for my screen desk without indicating to change it, each time I opened my computer the screen changes. It's not normal and I want to know why I have that problem.

You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years. You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

IMovie Picture Settings Problem

Hello Apple Support Boards members,
The pop-up window of my picture settings when choosing a photo to import (you know, with the Ken Burns effects) is out of my screen's range.
I discovered that using Exposé, but it seems this pop-up window is literally unreachable, being a bit further from the edge of my screen. (right edge that is).
How can I reset its position/ have it back?

This problem can be caused by iMovie's failure to handle one of its own features.
The location of the Photo Settings Window is "stuck" to the location of the project window opening it. This can cause the Photo Settings window to disappear off screen.
Recipe for the problem:
1. Place the project window in the lower right corner of the screen.,
2. Open the Photo Settings window. Drag it to the upper left corner of the screen.
3. Move the project to the upper left corner of the screen.
4. Switch to editing something OTHER THAN photos, which causes the Photo Settings window to close.
5. Now try to open the Photo Settings window. It is inaccessible. It is off-screen, where you can't see it.
6. To rescue the Photo Settings window, drag the project window back to the lower right corner of the screen. Or Quit iMovie and re-open the project.
To avoid this problem, routinely place the Photo Settings window over the Preview area.
Another way to avoid the problem is for the iMovie programmers to check the location of the window before it opens, and always move it on screen. (Tsk, tsk.)

Can't snap screen picture by home n on/off switch.

My IPad Air crashes since newly bought( last year December), although rectified by the online support staff many times but it's getting from bad to worst now. Now another problem popped up: I can't take screen picture(home and on/off button), it worked well till lately. Don't know when and what the next trouble will be then?
Very frustrating! Sarcastic thing is that my iPad 1 still work the best even until NOW! but the latest IPad Air *****!

You haven't describe what happens when you try to take a screenshot. Saying that you cannot do something that you used to be able to do, really isn't helpful for those trying to help you.
So what happens when you try to take a screenshot? Have you tried holding down on the sleep button and then depress the home button like it is a camera shutter button rather than trying the hold down the two buttons at the same time method? This works so much better for me than trying to time the two buttons at the same time method.

How do you get a full screen picture in FaceTime

I just switched from PC where I used Skype to a MacPro (Lion OS) and want to use FaceTime; but the picture is so narrow. Can FaceTime produce a full screen picture. The "Welcome" tutorial suggests so but doesn't tell you how. Thanks.

Picture messaging problems for EnV 3

In the past few days, I have been having picture messaging problems. When a Non-Verizon person sends me a picture, it says connecting (as it should) but just continues to say connecting. I never receive the picture. It just says failed if I let it continue to connect. When I receive a picture message from a Verizon person, it also says connecting and I allow it to go until it stops. It never shows a loading bar like it used to but the "connecting" screen will eventually disappear and I can view the picture. It works but, its very slow and it doesn't show the loading bar like it used to.
I also have problems sending picture messages. Again, the connecting screen comes up when sending a picture but no loading bar. I usually let it go for 30 seconds and I'll end up cancelling it. BUT, a friend of mine did end up receiving the picture even though it never said message sent on my phone.
Any help with these problems? I haven't done anything different than I used to and I have had the phone for almost a year and a half now. Everything has been fine until now.

You can do the *228 reset every month or so just for maintenance and to keep your phone updated.

Custom "Lock Screen Picture" not functional?

Hi, the Remote Desktop manual method of changing the lock screen picture still doesn't work for me.
Am I doing something wrong?
Method from Apple Remote Desktop Manual:
1 Create a picture using a graphics program, such as AppleWorks.
2 Save the picture in PICT, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, or any other QuickTime-compatible static image
format.
QuickTime-compatible movies or QuickTime VR objects cannot be used.
3 Name the picture “Lock Screen Picture”.
4 Copy the “Lock Screen Picture” file to /Library/Preferences/ on the client computer.
PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The method listed in the manual has never worked and still doesn't, as far as know, with 3.1, though I haven't tested it with 3.1 myself yet. The only working solution I have found is to swap out the Lock.jpg file located in
"/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreen.app/Contents/Resources".

What in the name of Goodness have you done with the full screen picture of Contacts? How dare you just change it without so much as a bye or leave? This is NOT progress but a throwback to about 1997! I supposedly 'updated' to an iPhone two weeks ago. Should have stayed with Samsung I reckon. I am deeply unimpressed!
