PE8 selection feathering

Hello-
I'm having a weird issue where the Quick Selection Tool is feathering.  I checked Refine Edge and it's all at 0.  I checked the eraser and it's set to 100% hardness.  But when I erase the selected area, it feathers into the part I'm trying to keep.  I tried copy/paste into a new layer and it did the same thing so I'm guessing it's a selection issue.  I tried resetting all tools and putting the Refine Edge back to zeros but that didn't help.  It's a basic picture with only 3 layers (background copy - blank layer - original background not visible).  Suggestions?

The Quick Selection Tool always uses a little anti-alias simalar to having anti-alias checked when using the magic wand, lasso tool, etc.
One thing that might give you a better selection with less of a feathering effect is to check the Auto-Enhance box for the Quick Selection Tool.

  • Why is it coloring outside of my selections?

I am trying to apply flats for a comic. For some reason, Photoshop is coloring outside of my selections. You can see this most clearly in the hand of the robot, where there is a feathered grey outside of the selection. I assume I just have a setting wrong or something. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

There are several setting you should look at Selection feathering, Brush hardness. I also think Adobe Photoshop Brush strokes are anti-aliased  painting with a pencil  may produce sharper edges. Also have your comic book black outline on a transparent layer above the layers you color. That way the outline will not compromised with color.

  • Cannot Define New Pattern from Transformed Selection

I am having some trouble making a new pattern from a selection in Photoshop CS6. If I simply use the rectangular selection tool over an area that I would like to make a new pattern from, I can go to Edit > Define Pattern to make a new pattern from my selection. However, if I transform the selection or create a selection using ctrl-click on a layer, the option Edit > Define Pattern is unavailable. I haven't been able to find anything online that explains why this would happen, so I've decided to try my luck here. Any insight will be appreciated! Thank you!

conroy2009: I used the rectangular selection tool and the option was there; when using the Transform Selection (feathering is not an option for that as far as I know) command and after positioning it correctly and accepting the new selection, the Define Pattern is not an option. I don't believe feathering is involved. However, perhaps the Transform Selection does anti-alias for some reason... which kind of irritates me. I just want to be able to make a more specific selection without using the pen tool for a simple rectangle. Strange that it would also apply an effect. :/ So, do other people just use the rectangular selection tool and get the exact position correct on the first shot?

  • Creating Accurate Selections

Even when using the "Fixed Size" Style with the Marguee selection tool, I can't do an Edit > Copy > Merged and paste into a new document of the same dimensions. For example, if I create a Marquee selection of 100px by 100px, do an Edit > Copy > Merged, then Command > N, a new document dialogue opens with the dimensions of 106px by 106 px, not 100px by 100px. What's happening here?
Even making a Normal-style Marquee selection is equally unstable. Looking at the Info Window, drag a selection out to 100px by 100px, or any dimension you want, then release your mouse button. You'll see your selection change to 106px by 106px.
I'm using CS3 in this case, on a Mac G5 dual PPC.
Any help understanding what's going on here would be appreciated.

    Hi, Charles
Yes it was. And that was the problem.
The strange this is that yesterday I tried to set the feathering to zero and
the program told me I had to use a minimum value of a least 1. Today, when I
selected zero for feathering, I didn't get the warning.
    Strange things are afoot.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Photoshop Elements 11 - Rectangular Marquee functionality gone

I "upgraded" from Photoshop Elements 8 (PE8) to Photoshop Elements 11 (PE11), and have regretted it every day. I use the Macintosh version and have used PE for many years. A refund is in my immediate future.
One bit of functionality in PE8 THAT IS NOT in PE11 is the "Rectangular Marguee" options.  In PE8, selecting "Rectangular Marquee" showed three options: "Normal" "Fixed Size" "Fixed Ratio".  "Normal" allowed freeform selection of areas of the photo. "Fixed Size" created a Marquee that matched the dimensions you provide (such as selecting a 3" x "5" set portion of a photo) "Fixed Ratio" allowed a size ratio of the marquee. Here is an example of what I did with the "Fixed Size": My wife is a teacher and takes many pics of her kids for a variety of reasons. I can set a "Fixed Size" Rectangular Marquee to select a portion of a picture to segregate just the child's face that I copy/paste into MSWord to print the equivalent of a sheet of school pictures to allow the kids to learn each other's names.
Note also that, simlar to another bug I reported that is easily reproduced by Adobe Tech Support, If I select a portion of a photo (1 1/2"w x 2"h for example as in the school pictures above) copy/paste into other software (MS Word in my case) results in a pasted image of about 5"w.
Many new features in PE11, many old features of PE8 GONE.
Don't get me started with Adobe discarding the option of opening photos in PE11 utilizing their "Adobe Bridge" program like they allowed in PE8.
HELP, Adobe!  Please fix these bugs!

I think you are maybe just not looking in the right place. For instance, the tool options are now down at the bottom of your screen rather than in the options bar at the top. If you don't see them, click the Tool Options button. Then for the Rectangular Marquee you should see:
There's actually more functionality now with the new refine edge tool, not less.

  • I'm stuck at Lesson 8 ( Classroom In A Book Photoshop CS6)

HI! I'm a beginner in photoshop and starting to learn everything from scratch. In Page 216 where you have to convert paths to selections is where i got stucked. I made the selection and in the operation area of selection dialog box, i selected subtract from selection and i click ok. It prompted 'Warnings: Pixels are not more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible'. I'm not sure why as i followed the steps properly and did this few times. Anybody have any clue? Thanks!

It means that the remaining pixels are present, but more than 50% transparent.
Was your first selection feathered ?
With the first selection tool enabled you can see in the property bar if there's an entry for Feather.

  • Problems with Photoshop Alpha Channels

    Hi all
Got a job where I want to use alpha channels to cut-out some images in Photoshop and then put them into an ID frame with a black background. Want to use alpha channels rather than a clipping path as I need the edges to be feathered (have applied 2 pixels of feathering to the selection in Photoshop before saving it).
When I do this and drop it into Quark it looks good but when these images are dropped into ID and then the alpha channel is turned on, with the default Threshold and Tolerance settings, it doesn't look good. It looks like a rough approximation of my alpha channel, all the fiddly bits and bezier curves in the selection have been smoothed out and the feathering has gone. Playing with the settings doesn't really seems to help either. If I turn on the alpha channel in the import options when importing then it comes in as expected but I have quite a few images already in the document that I need to turn on the alpha channels for.
Both PS and ID are CS3. I've tried saving the images both as PSD and tif. Anyone got any ideas? Seems odd that when I import an image with the channel on I can't go to the clipping options and tweak the settings.
    thanks,
    Iain

Thanks for your reply Bob. I've confused things with my terminology I think. We're drawing a path round the image, using bezier curves where appropriate, making that work path a selection (feathering the edge in the process) and then saving the selection (as an alpha channel) and then using the feathered alpha channel in Quark/ID to knock-out the background. Not keen on using a PSD with a transparent background at the moment as these are just test files while we show the customer what it will look like if we do cut-outs. We are making a couple of different alpha channels per image, with different settings, which would mean multiple files if we used your method I think. Maybe once we get the approval from the customer we could use PSDs as you describe but I was just wondering why the options for affecting alpha channels after importing the image aren't working as I expected.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 - mask

    Hi
In some of my video clips, I would only use "Video Effect" in a particular area. for instance, in the middle of the video clip.
In Photoshop I can apply "Layer mask" og make a "Selection", and in the After Effect, I can also use masks, but how do I do in Premiere Pro CS5?
See the attached image, it perhaps explains better what I mean.

I am an AE idiot due to no experience.. but love PS as I've used for years.. and often make titles and masks in PS...although I have seen tutorials where doing the masks in AE if really very similar to PS and pretty easy once you know how...
If you want to though.. if you want to make mask in PS and import that as an image to your video edit.. you can do it.. and then track it or whatever  you need to do..
white is tranparent, feathering edges of selection in PS does all the stuff you maybe be used to.. using PS... ( white to black )..
basically open your image in PS , make new channel ( alpha ) , make new path, make the path and fill with white and do what you want with the selection ( feathering etc ).. so you'll have a new layer with your selection ( mask )... make sure the mode is rgb 32 bit.. and " save as " ... you'll get your mask from PS... ( check the box on 'save as ' to include alpha ).
    good luck !

How do I change a default from feathered edge to sharp edge when I select a path?
I'm working in Photoshop CS6 on a Mac and am having trouble when I select a Path it automatically feathers the selection border. I can't seem to find any place to adjust a feather setting. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm using paths to silhouette an image on a photograph to use in another document and I need a hard edge on it, not a feathered one.

In the Paths panel, click the flyout menu (in the top right of the panel) and choose Make Selection (this option will only be available if you have a path selected). Reduce the Feather Radius to 0 (zero) and click OK. This setting will be the default even when clicking the Load Path as Selection button.

  • Can selected points of a mask be feathered

    hi
i have seen in mocha that rather than the whole mask being feathered  single or a selection of points around a mask can alone  be feathered
is this possible in after effects
    cheers

You can use 2 masks in AE. Just adjust the paths.  I'll have to check on exporting the feathered mask from Mocha AE. I know you can from Mocha Pro.
Edit: Turns out all you have to do is select Export Shape Data from Mocha AE, Copy to Clipboard, then paste to a any layer to get that feathered mask into AE. The shape can then be used as a track matte or may be applied directly to the footage.

  • Rectangler marquee tool seems to be feathering my selection ?

    Hi everybody
I have selected some content, that is 100% solid colour and no Alpha, in my image with Rectangler Marquee Tool (with feather set to 0px).  I want open this content in a new window so i ctrl-c or ctrl-shift-c, then make new document ctrl-n  and paste it in.      When I zoom in,   1 pixel on the left and right sides are partially transparent.
I'd very much appreciate some clarity on this as it has brought my web-design to a halt
    Regards
    Thomas

Uncheck the Anti-Aliasing setting.  This setting helps reduce jagged edges, but essentially feathers the selection at the edges.

  • Feathered selection + Levels = Transparency?

Hi!  I've been trying to create a vignette on a picture by creating a circular selection, then feather it and invert it. I then use levels to darken it a bit, but as long as I've feathered the selection I get a transparent path along the selection, making me see the layer beneath. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong. I've used this effect in regular Photoshop and there it works fine.  Thanks in advance, Ronny

Might be a bug; I can repro.
    Steps:
Circle Selection Tool > make a selection on the image.
Selection settings > Feather > adjust settings > Apply
Adjustments > Levels > play with the levels

  • Select Modify Border always feathers

    Hi All,
Apologies if this has already been discussed somewhere previously, but I'm getting very frustrated that I can't seem to easily accomplish what should be a very simple task:
I am using CTRL+A to "Select All" and then trying to contract the selection by X pixels. Apparently my only option after a Select All command is to use the "Border" command, but this always seems to feather the selection, no matter what I do. I know there are some "workarounds" to get the selection I want, but seriously, this is so dead simple of a task I'm going bonkers here.
Is it just me or did this used to be a lot easier in earlier versions of PS? Seems to me that in CS5 Adobe is trying to get "fancy" with their UI and making things a lot harder than they need to be.
Could someone from Adobe let me/us know why the UI is making it impossible for me to do a simple Select > Modify > Contract command (following a Select All)? I distinctly remember being able to do this without hassle in every other version of PS I've ever worked with.
    Your in Frustration,
    Funkmasta

    Howdy.
Is it just me or did this used to be a lot easier in earlier versions of PS?
It's not just you. It's pretty easy in CS3.
The screenshot is after Ctrl+A has been applied. The Contract command is still active. And the selection will not be feathered.
According to MTSTUNER's link (thank you), CS3 is the only version that will do this. Sometimes it's good to be behind the curve.
Maybe the referenced script will fix you up. I don't know anything about scripts, but I do know a little about actions. So out of curiousity, I hacked together an action which should work in CS5. It's based on expanding the canvas, contracting the selection, then cropping back to the original size. It looks like a long way to go to accomplish something so simple, but Ps does it all in the blink of an eye.
    1. Merge Visible (Ctl+Alt+Shft).  This creates a proxy for the original image size after the canvas is enlarged. This layer will be deleted at the end of the action.
    2. Canvas Size. I set it to 105% in both axis. The percentage doesn't matter, as long as it's more than 100. The point it to get the canvas border away from the proxy border.
    3. Set Selection. Ctl +Click on the thumbnail on the proxy layer. This will select the perimeter of the proxy layer, which is the same as the original canvas.
    4. Contract. Menu>Select>Modify>Contract. Enter the number of pixels. This can be changed later. As you can see in the screen shot above, I have made this a conditional action. It will stop here for you to approve or change the settings. When you hit enter, the action continues.
    5. Layer Via Copy. This layer preserves the contracted selection. It's really being used as a channel. This layer will also be deleted at the end of the action.
    6. Set Selection. Ctl+Click on the thumbnail for the Merge Visible layer from step 1.
    7. Crop. Menu>Image>Crop. The image is now the original size.
    8. Set Selection. Ctl+Click on the layer thumbnail created in step 5. You should now be looking at the contracted selection. We're done, except for a little housecleaning below.
    9. Delete. Delete the top layer, which should be the contracted channel. (This doesn't affect the selection.)
    10. Delete. Delete the top layer, which should be the Stamp Visible layer. Now we're back where we started, but we have a contracted selection.
    Stop Recording.
It may look ridiculous on paper, but it works like a charm, so far as I've tested it. And the beauty of actions is you only have to make them once. No matter how much trouble they are.
Once the action is made, it's quick and easy to use. Just click on the action button.
The contract pixel dialog box appears.
OK or change and OK, and you're done. The selection appears at the desired location, and is not feathered. In practice, the only downside is you get a few extra history states.
You get where you're going, and you get there quick. So quick no one will notice you got there via Paris, London, and El Paso.
I'm not 100% sure this will work in CS5, as I've never laid eyes on it, but the issue seems to be that when the selection touches the canvas border, Contract Selection is not available. Nowhere in the action does a selection touch the canvas border, so it should work the same as it does in my CS3. If you're interested in testing it, I can send you the Droplet, or you can create it from scratch using the instructions above.
Anyway, that's all I got, and it could all be wrong.
    Peace,
    Lee

  • Feathered selection, transparency, mask question

    1) On a transparent canvas, fill a feathered selection at 100% opacity.
    2) Cmd-click layer icon to load the selection (of the pixels).
    3) Add its Layer Mask.
When I Enable/Disable the Layer Mask, the pixels change (the border changes).
This does not happen when a similar selection is made on a non-transparent canvas.
What is going on with the transparency and the Mask that I am missing? That is, why does Mask change the image?
    Thanks,
    Sonny
    OS 10.5.8, PSCS4

    Hi Sonny
Michael has some good insight into this.
No matter what, these topics are definitely hard to grasp and I too have struggled with how does all the transparency, selections, layer masks, alpha channels all work together (or not) and the differences between all these names and their function. My experience is how learning works for one person may do nothing for another.  Thought I would give it a shot based on my understanding.  Sorry if this is wordy yet you ask very good and tough questions.
    First for the Transparency/Opacity
When you create a feathered selection and fill it over a transparent background you effectively have created a transparency mask for that layer right within the artwork.  The fuzzy edge is the transition from full 100% opacity (transparency = 0) within the red square to 0% opacity outside the square (transparency=100%).  This defines one of the two transparency masks that each level can have.  The transparency mask does not get a lot of press because a thumbnail for it does not show up anywhere.   The second mask is the Layer Mask.  The total opacity is determined by multiplying the Layer Mask with the Transparency Mask (ignoring the opacity/fill sliders and Blending Options).  The effective total opacity for the layer is seen as familiar  checkerboard pattern.
When you pressed CMD (Ctrl on PC) and clicked the artwork thumbnail, you pulled up the transparency mask up as a selection (I'll talk about the marching ants and the hard edge it portrays later on).   By copying this selection into the Layer Mask you now have effectively double masked your artwork  (Layer Mask X Transparency Mask). The transparency mask still sits within the artwork and is now duplicated as a Layer Mask.  This will make the total mask look like it has shrunk.  Why?.... Right in the middle of the transition edge of either mask you will have 50% opacity.  When you double up on the masks that same point will now have 50% x 50% = 25% opacity.  The bottom line is the the opacity edge will go through a steeper and faster transition when you have this doubling up of masks.
If that is not what you want there are several ways to avoid this
    1) Just don't use a layer mask since the red object is already created with a smooth transparent edge within a transparent field (why do you want the layer mask?)
    2) Create the initial selection with a hard edge, move it into a layer mask, select it and then Select>Refine Edge for the Layer Mask to create a smooth transition.
Either way you won't double up on the masks.
    Selection Mask
The selection mask is its own beast and not associated with any particular layer.  Think of it as a mask that hovers over the entire layer stack and that it can be applied to whichever layer is active (highlighted).  The selection mask with its marching ants gives the impression that it has a hard edge.  This is misleading because anytime you have any feathering you are creating a mask with a gradual transition or a mask that on the edges has partial opacity/transparency.  Almost all the selection tools have the ability to do feathering.
Unfortunately tyring to represent the mask edge is problematic when it is not a sharp transition.  The marching ants just represents the point in the feathering where the partial transparency of the selection =50%.  When you have no feathering the edge is sharp and the marching ants are exactly right on top of that edge.  Other than that, the marching ants are somewhere in the middle of the edge transistion.
    Clear as mud right?
    Hope that helps
