PE8 vs PrPro

Hello,
I am running:
Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz, 8 MB cache, Socket 1366 processor
Intel DX58SO Core i7, DDR3 motherboard
6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz DIMM RAM
Seagate 1 TB SATA II HD
MSI R4830-T2D1G, ATI 1 GB DDR3, Dual DVI, HDMI , HDTV video card.
With that being said, PE8 seems to run really slow and is always rendering irregardless of the amount (1-~38) of videos in the project pane. I am only running on a trial version to see if I like what it can do (and I am somewhat satisfied), but have considered Premiere Pro as well. I am wondering if the application will run (process) faster in premiere pro or if there is a difference. I am not happy with having to wait 30 seconds to be able to add a second effect as the program thinks about what is going on. I watched the tutorial videos on adobe tv about pro and the system seemed to run with zero lag (albeit the computer was completely set up for the program, but it still ran very fast). SOOO.... I was hoping you could give me a heads-up before I buy either one.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.
First, PrPro is a bit more system intensive, than were older versions of PrE. I do not know PrE 8, so cannot comment there.
You machine should run PrPro with only one issue: it functions best with a minimum of 3x HDD's. Considering how cheap these are, I'd look into adding two more SATA II's HDD's. This will also help with PrE (any version) too.
If you go with PrPro, you WILL want to make sure to update it to CS4.1. There are tons of improvements across the board. CS4.2 is about to be released, but I'm not positive of what changes/improvements will be included.
One giant plus with PrPro is that it now comes bundled with Encore, the authoring program. It's power is awsome. Also, Adobe has expanded the power of Dynamic Link. This allows one to Import a Project/Sequence into Encore, without ever having to Export from PrPro. Also, changes to that Project/Sequence will update in Encore.
For me, the ability to edit with Sequences (like, mini-Projects in PrE). As of CS4, one can also mix-n-match source footage, by setting different Presets on a Sequence, not on a Project basis.
Good luck,

  • Preview not working properly in PE8

I have clips captured by PE as .avi and they preview fine with PE7 but with PE8 the sound seems ok but the video stops for 10 seconds then plays for .5 second and then stops again.  I just updated my video driver and that did not help (as a mater of fact now PE7 won't work) and I have Quick Time 7.6.4.  I am using XP Home, AMD 4400+ Athlon 64x2 (I plan to upgrade next year) 4GB ram and Nvidia Quadro FX3500 with plenty of free disk space.
    Bob

    I have Quick Time 7.6.4
It is normally common wisdom to update QT Player to the latest version, because PrE interfaces with it so very closely.
However, many Adobe users have been having tons of issues with QT Player 7.6.3 and especially 7.4. The last version that seemed to play nice with Adobe products was 7.5.5. There were also the ill-conceived 7.4.x versions, that also killed most things Adobe.
As a test, can you roll back to QT Player 7.5.5? I believe that Apple keeps an archive of older versions, but you may have to navigate to find it. It has worked for users with PrE, PrPro and AE, where the 7.6.x versions are killing the Adobe programs. I hope that Apple adopts a program to test QT Player on machines running Adobe programs soon.

  • PE8 - No audio in rendered clip

I'm getting no audio after rendering, but do have sound before rendering. I've checked all the settings I know to check!
The PE8 audio hardware preference is set to 'Premiere Elements WDM Sound'. Is this a device that should show up in Device Manager? If so it isn't there. No problems with sound on any video except for PE8 rendered clips. I'd appreciate some help.
    System:
    Win7 Pro, 64-bit
ATI Radeon HD5850, Catalyst 10.2 driver
    ASUS P6T motherboard
    6 GB DDR3
    Core i7 950 (stock clock)
BTW, PE8 bombs from time to time for no apparent reason. I gather from reading other posts that nobody else is having this problem? Ha! Also have Cyberlink PowerDirector but it rarely crashes. Sorry, had to get some gigs in.
    Thanks,
    Justin-H

As far as PowerDirector goes, I have an older version (think it is 10, but cannot recall clearly), and it has actually crashed more than my PrE 4. Now, in all fairness, I use it to handle some really odd CODEC files, and basically convert with it, for editing in PrPro. My observations do not reflect either the newer versions, do not compare with PrE 8, and also include some very difficult footage. Still, it goes down about 1:5 sessions, while PrE 4 has only "hung it up" twice, and at least one was OE on my part, while the other was definitely a resource issue, as I did not utilize my own tips in this ARTICLE.
Just some personal observations and not a controlled test,

  • Can PPRO CS4 and PE8 on the same PC .

The reason I want to know is ,I have just upgrade from CS2 to CS4 I miss the DVD auothring app that I had in CS2 and the PE8 would be more than enough for my need.thank

The only issue, of which I am aware, was with CS2 Production Studio and the addition of PrE 4. Obviously, Adobe did not anticipate that folk might have the former, and then install the latter. When I did, I found that there was already an Adobe KB Article on the problems. PrE 4 broke most of the CS2 Production Suite, but a simple Repair Install took care of it. I was up and running in about 1 hour (after I found my CS2 Production Studio discs).
Now, two things to take into account: CS4 is still current and PrE 8 is new. The majority of users would be going from PrE to PrPro, and not the other way around (as I did with PrE 4). Reports might not have come in yet, if there are issues. To date, I have seen none in either the PrE, or the PrPro forum, and I read almost every post in each.
If there is an issue, I would anticipate that the old "cure," of a Repair Installation, would fix things again. However, after the CS2 vs PrE 4 thing, I believe that Adobe has thought about all situations with CS4 and PrE 8, but could be wrong.
Good luck, and sorry that I do not have the definitive answer for you,

  • PE8 Low Memory Problem

I have newly installed PE8 on a Quad core, 4GB Mem, 6 TB Hdrives, Win XP SP3.
Open new project import 5 jpg photos (less than mb each), select them and add as group slideshow.  As soon as the work area starts to render each of the pictures I got the "low memory" warning and basically the program stops responding.  I am appalled that only 5 photos brings it to its knees--somethng is wrong
I have tried almost everything, (virtual memory is managed by windows all 6gb of it), defragged disks and virtual disk page file (ms sysinternals),  cache is set to its own hd with 750 GB of space.  I submitted this problem to adobe tech support and got referred to tech articles which did not help.  I have tried running with msconfig turning off everything but it still does not work. I have done more reinstalls than I can count.  More puzzeling is the fact that I monitor the ms process explorer from sysinternals and it show lots of physical and virtual memory available when the low memory warning occurs. I have reset the prefs and just about everything else but nothing works.
Attached is screen shot of PE8 and the Sysmonitor at the time the error occurred.
I have installed this same file into win 7 machine64 bit and it appears to work so I know the program works on other OS and machine, but I really need  to work on my main photo processing machine (ie the Win XP).
I have seen many other similar post for memory related problems, has anyone found a cure?

Like you, I come from a 30 year career as an advertising still photographer. Back in my dark past, I got a degree in cinematoghraphy (video was basically live feed to air in a studio back then, or live capture to 2" video tape, for delayed broadcast.), but had so many still clients, that I really had no time to use my studies in film.
Fast forward some years, and digital image manipulation caught my attention. Most of my images were assembled in the darkroom via analog compositing, and when I saw my first Scitex computer, I knew that I was looking into the future. In a few years, Aldus introduced PhotoStyler for the PC, and PageMaker for layout. The future had hit my desktop. Shortly thereafter, Adobe introduced Photoshop for the Mac, and then for the PC. I shelved PhotoStyler for Photoshop 2.5 and never looked back. Though I still shot film, soon everything was digitized and on my computer, before delivery. Aldus sold PageMaker to Adobe, and the development team for PhotoStyler went on to form Ulead.
Everything I do now is digital, but still every image goes through my computer. I too work in .PSD format and keep that workflow all the way to my video production. I seldom use JPEG, unless a client hands it off to me, or I need to do a Save_As for a client's Web site. I just do not like the compression, even at low levels (high quality levels), and have always had a very powerful computer (for each generation), so large files were where I was most comfortable.
When I began producing video (DVD-Video), I explored the best was to maintain the ultimate quality, and tested extensively, how my NLE handled the large files. I became convinced that the results were better (to my trained eye), when all manipulations were done in Photoshop, rather than in the NLE. I could see the difference, and wanted the ultimate, for both me and for my clients. I also liked the ultimate quality control from PS, rather than leaveing the "decisions" to the whims and limitations of the NLE. When I moved to PrPro, I tested again, and found the results from PS to still be superior. Now, I do have to admit that I have not tested with each version upgrade of PrPro, or with PrE, and I am sure that they have improved, but still rely on PS for everything. The biggest plus for me, regarding PrPro was that it COULD handle my .PSD's, so no conversion, even to TIFF. I'm with you on the need to work with .PSD's, or .TIFF's, at the least. One reason that I rely on PrPro for sitll image work is that I can Import a Layered .PSD as a Sequence, keeping my Layers. I can then animate each Layer, as I want and do so quite often. This inability to Import my un-Flattened, Layered .PSD's into PrE is a big drawback. Until PrE adds Sequences, I do not expect this to change. Still, if one does not need to animate the Layers and retain them, PrE's ability to just work with .PSD's is a really big plus.
For me, to date, PrPro does everything that I want, but I can see the benefits of a program, like ProShow Producer, so I'm exploring it. I'll probably pick up a full-paid copy, just to test it's workflow and output vs PrPro. Right now, I'm waiting on the next big SlideShow Project to "buy" ProShow Producer for me.
I am still working with SD Projects, but will soon add HD and export to BD. I believe that this will get me closer to that quality "Holy Grail." Of course, this will also bring an upgrade for my workstation, my OS and a new video camera, plus a BD burner. It will be with this output in mind, that I will be testing ProShow Producer, plus PrPro CS4.1 (or whatever version it's up to by then).
Now, I'm looking less for any automation in the SlideShow production, mainly because I am a "control freak." I want complete power in the editing suite. The only use for automation is for batch processing my stills for use in an NLE, or SlideShow production program. I understand the allure of the automation to most editors, but that is just not my personal style. My workflow is much slower, but then I enjoy determining every aspect of every image.
Let me know what you think of the ProShow products, as I will greatly appreciate your observations, especially as you come from a background very similar to mine.
    Good luck,

  • PE8: Can't burn disc from work area only?

Am I blind? I can't seem to find anywhere an option that will let me burn a disc from the work area only... is it there somewhere?
I see that option for sharing to the web, but not when burning a disc.
I have six hours of material on the timeline and was hoping to burn three discs, but PE8 is telling me that I don't have enough disc space for all 6 hours.  Well, duh, I know that, so I was planning on moving the work area over what I wanted to burn, like you can do in PrePro.  No go in PE8?

Because of a major difference between PrE and PrPro, Sequences, there are things that can be done in PrPro, that PrE cannot do.
Back in PrPro 2.0, one could Burn to DVD directly. That has not been possible, as of CS3. From there on, one had to either Export/Import from PrPro to Encore, or use Adobe Dynamic Link (strengthened and improved in CS4), to author a DVD/BD.
Steve's suggestion is the best - use the WAB to Export the segments that are required per DVD, and then do separate Projects for each. Import each DV-AVI that has been Exported, via the WAB, and then just Burn to DVD, for each one. It's two more steps, but gets the job done neatly.
    Good luck,

  • Installing PE8 and uninstalling PE7

I have a PC running Vista-64 bit and PE7.  Everything works fine, and I'm planning on installing PE8 as soon as I get it.  I want to install PE8, then use it a while, then if I am comfortable with it, un-install PE7.
My question is, will installing 8, waiting a while, then UNINSTALLING 7 cause me problems?  Will un-installing PE7 after PE8 is already installed potentially cause me to lose some files PE8 needs?
I see an entry in my uninstall folder for Photoshop elements 7.0, Premiere elements 7.0 and Premiere elements templates 7.0.  If I install PE8 then un-install all the pe7 stuff at a later date, will it somehow remove some files PE8 might need, like templates or anything?

    Sebastian,
I am also just a user of Adobe products, with no inside info. All of observations are purely anecdotal, but they come from decades of using Adobe programs, some from before they were actually Adobe products.
Over this time, with many versions of the major Adobe stable, I have only encountered one install/uninstall problem, and have only read on one other.
The first, the personal one, was the installation of PrE 4, after I had the full CS2 Production Studio suite installed on the same machine. In that case, the installation of PrE 4 killed all programs in the Production Studio, PS, AI, Acrobat Pro, AE, Bridge and Encore. This was a known issue to Adobe. When I became aware of the issue, a search turned up the appropriate Adobe KB Article. It instructed the user to just do a Repair Install of the programs in the Production Studio suite. Obviously, Adobe had not anticipated that one might have the Production Studio (probably the same for stand-alone versions in that suite, but I cannot verify that), and then subsequently install the lower-level program, PrE 4. Enough had encountered this situation, as Adobe had that KB Article, so twenty minutes of Repair Install, and all was working again. Quick and smooth, but would have scared me, had I not had that KB Article.
The next was with PrPro CS3 and CS4. In that case, if a user had CS3, and subsequently installed CS4, only to later remove CS3, files necessary for CS4 would be uninstalled too. Again, Adobe became aware of this behavior and issued a KB Article on this issue. Again, a Repair Install of CS4 took care of the missing files. I did not encounter this problem personally, so can only add it from Adobe’s instructions in that KB Article, and from second-hand reports of others.
Over the decades, I have had up to four versions of PS on one machine. One version was to do one particular job for one particular client. With PS 5 Adobe changed some things with Spot Color, and how it was handled. This client had a client and a printer, that needed things done in the way that PS 4 did Spot Color. There is still probably an article on the Internet on how I handled this issue. I had PS 5, because I had not gotten around to removing it. I had PS 6 installed, as that was then the version that I was most familiar with, and PS 7, as it was the newest version, and I was still learning its interface changes. I always kept the previous version of PS on my machines, for those times that a client would need something immediately. Though I’d be learning the newer version and becoming familiar with its changes, if I was under the pressure of a looming deadline, I wanted my "old friend," that I knew intimately and could use quickly without even thinking.
In short time, I had removed PS 5 and PS 6, and only had PS 4 and PS 7 functioning. No issues. However, I would be remiss if I did not point out that these were all older Adobe programs, and were before things like Activation. Programs were far more simple in those days.
Similar happened with PageMaker 4.5 and PM 6. I kept the older version, as I had many Projects in it, and knew it. I had the newer version to learn, and explore the added power. Same for Illustrator. Once I had 3 versions of AI installed, until I became comfortable enough with the newer, to uninstall the older ones. Same for all of the Macromedia (now Adobe) programs. Though outside the Adobe camp, it was the same for what is now Corel Painter. I had 3 versions installed, as I needed the way that version 3 did things, appreciated things in version 4 and knew it, and was learning version 5, but was not yet comfortable enough with it to rely on it for rush jobs. Finally, version 4 came off of the machine, and I replaced version 5 with 6, but still kept the older version 3, because of the way it handled certain things, and as there was a change in the way that Brushes were handled, I needed some of my Brushes that would only work in the now much older version 3. No issues with having multiple versions, and then uninstalling those, when the time came.
Now, looking at Adobe’s NLE programs, there is another compelling reason to retain an older version. Let’s take PrPro 2.0 as an example. The .PRPROJ files from version 2 will Open in PrPro CS3, but with a conversion. PrPro CS3 Project files will NOT Open in PrPro 2. Same for PrPro CS4. Adobe is good at offering forward compatibility, though it is not perfect. There is almost never ANY backward compatibility. If one has Projects in an earlier version, they MIGHT Open in the later version, but prevailing wisdom is to finish all Projects in the version, in which they were started. That is foolproof, where forward compatibility with Projects can work, and should work, there are never any guarantees.
With regards to this forward compatibility, I have Opened Projects done in Pr 6.5 (Mac) in CS2 (PC), with no issues. I have Opened Pr 6.5 (PC) in CS3 (PC) to allow Mac users to Open these on their Mac’s. Since CS2 was a PC-only version, Mac users were hosed, with earlier PC version Projects. They HAD to be Opened in CS3 (PC), and Saved from CS3, to allow a Mac to Open these. Kind of an odd workflow, but necessary when a Mac user encountered these older PC Projects, and I was able to help many get these onto their Mac’s.
PrE is very similar to PrPro, and I still recommend that one finish a Project started in an older version, and not try to utilize the forward compatibility, though it usually works fine. Keeping those Projects in their native version is failsafe - they always work. Often, this does require having multiple versions of PrE installed.
Since we are talking of PrE 8 and PrE 7, I will freely admit that I have no direct experience with either, so I do not know how well PrE 8 handles PrE 7 Projects. Based on general experiences, they should Open fine, and I’d guess that one could NOT go backward from that point on.
I also have no experience with uninstalling an older version of PrE, after a newer one has been installed. Still, with my experience with Adobe products, it would seem very likely that one would have no issues. If they did, the Repair Install of the remaining newer version should do fine.
Anecdotal yes, but based on decades of working with Adobe products.
Regardless, we greatly appreciate your observations, and welcome you to this forum. We are not accustomed to having Adobe Employees here, and feel very fortunate that you took your time to enter into this conversation, regardless of from which department you come. Thank you for your comments.
    Welcome and thank you,

  • Should have issued airbags with PE8!

PE7 was (at least to me) usable and stable.  It did what I wanted, and I don't recall stability issues.  That all ended with an "upgrade" to PE8.  I can't seem to keep it running more than 2-5 minutes before it crashes.  It happens at various times, and during various activities...including simply watching the screen.
I have a good NVIDIA video card (that seems to work just fine with every other product I have), but I read the pinned "solution" at the top of this forum and updated to the "beta" version of the driver that is supposed to fix the random crashing...however, my verified 195.81 drivers have had zero impact on the consistent PE8 crashing.  I haven't been able to complete a single project since I "upgraded" from version 7.  My system is 32-bit vista with 4GB physical ram and a stout core2quad processor.  It runs CAD, flight sims, and other audio and video apps both well and reliably...but not PE8.  The only other app it has had issues with is PSE8...but the minor issues with PSE8 pale in comparison to the complete lack of usability in PE8.
I see so many similar customer reviews and forum comments...that I wish, oh how I wish I had waited to make a decision about upgrading!!!
So the question is: considering how horrible this release has been, will there be a free and fixed version 8?  ...or will Adobe attempt to make it's customers wait for (and pay for) version 9?  I can say that if they think the latter is the case, Adobe lost me as a PSE&PE customer...and any hopes whatsoever for considering their alternative products like Lightroom, Photoshop or Premiere (non-Elements).  They may be fine products...but if the company's perspective is such with the entry level products, it won't take long for a company to feel too big for its britches with the higher end ones as well.
Did any QA whatsoever occur with PSE8 or PE8?

Thanks "Steve Grisetti" and "The Wine Snob" for your assistance.  Nothing so far has worked to keep PrE8 from crashing...
    Steve Grisetti wrote:
There are a number of articles in the FAQs to the right of this forum on how to disable background processes and maximize the potential of the program to run stably.
Thanks for the pointer.  The first thing I did, once I found that PrE8 used background rendering, was to disable it.  Aside from that, I have prevented all other unnecessary apps and background processes from running and consuming resources.  No matter how slimmed down it gets, the crashing still occurs with a similar pattern.
    the_wine_snob wrote:
In the meantime, all that I can offer are suggestions that might help get your system "tuned up," to do editing. Much of this is non PrE-specific and applies whether one is running it, PrPro, AVID, Edius, or any other NLE.
The first is on setting up your computer for an NLE session. It's covered in this ARTICLE.
The next is on general troubleshooting, and is covered in the links in this ARTICLE.
When one experiences crashes, either system or program, or hangs, there are often "clues" scattered around Event Viewer. This ARTICLE will give you tips on gathering those clues.
Along with those, here are some FAQ Articles:
FAQ 1 on increasing the odds of working with PrE 8.
FAQ 2 on turning off processes that continue to run, after one exits from PrE 8
FAQ 3 on turning off background processes in PrE 8
Though I haven't used the special task killing apps mentioned in some of the links, I've done all these things in spirit.
The organizer's AutoAnalyzer was turned off immediately after discovering that it trashes GPS tagging of images...not to mention consumed incredible resources for little value.
Vista's Indexing is still on, since I have other software that require this service to be on.  I can see how this would slow things down...but not cause crashing.  PrE7 was just fine with it.
I have 2 7200 RPM SATA hard drives with 32MB buffers that are not fragmented, and I have set a couple of the scratch disks (Video Previews and Media Cache) to use the second hard drive.  While this did increase performance/responsiveness of PrE8, it didn't prolong or prevent crashing.
I have an NVIDIA 9800GT video card that I have upgraded drivers from the latest stable to the beta as mentioned in other posts, and this did not affect crashing.  In fact, the only change I can notice is that my KVM has more trouble returning after my monitor goes to sleep...though I can't be sure that's not just a coincidence.
The video I'm editing is 640x480 30fps MJPEG in an AVI container.  This is from my fuji camera, and has never been a problem in any prior release of PrE (back to 3.0).  It's neither HD nor one of the sqirrelly new formats.  I have tried this without any rendering, and PrE seems to last just a little bit longer before crashing...but this is not objectively timed.  I have tried manually rendering all clips prior to working with the video.  This process takes a bit of time, and it does not crash during the manual rendering...but crashes very soon after beginning to edit the rendered clips.
I've considered setting processor affinity so that PrE8 has only a single core...but even if that fixed some threading problem, I'd reject using it for the simple case that this type of issue should not be present in long-standing commercial products that cost this much.
I would probably still complain a little if this were just a performance issue...but at the moment, my investment in the product is 100% waste.  In fact, it's greater than 100% waste since it's removed my ability to edit my videos.  I would go back to PrE7 if I could, but I'm concerned that doing so without a system rebuild would be futile...and I don't have the time for that right now.
Also, for the sake of comparison...MS Live MovieMaker works flawlessly and rapidly on my VGA videos, as well as 1080i stuff.  I would just use this tool if it had the ability to build DVDs with menus.
I would love to get PrE back and working reliably...but I think version 8 may have been the release that pushes me to competitor's products.  I'll gladly pay for improved features and/or compatibility...but I will refuse to continue paying for degraded compatibility and reliability.  The company that thinks it can get away with forcing customers to pay to get back the stability that they took away is nothing better than an organized crime protection raquet.  I hope I'm wrong and that Adobe will stand behind this product...but I doubt it.

  • Canon XL1s DV Camera – Utilising 4 channels of recorded audio in PE8

    Hi,
I have created a number of interviews using the Canon XL1s and have chosen on the camera to record 4 channels of audio (2x stereo). The first audio pair utilizes a stereo microphone mounted on top of the camera. The second audio pair is connected via the cameras auxiliary XLR connectors to 2x radio mics.  If I play the recording back on the camera I can hear all four channels. When I upload via fire-wire into PE8 I can only hear (and see) the first pair of channels and cannot find the second ones anywhere… Is this a limitation of PE8, or have I missed something…
    All suggestions gratefully received..

    Neville,
You are correct, in that PrE cannot Capture the second stereo-pair, i.e. channels 3 & 4. This is a limitation in both PrE and PrPro too.
For SD material, most folk recommend SceneAlyzer as a Capture program. For HD, HDVSplit is the recommended Capture program. Many feel that these are the Capture modules, that SHOULD have been incorporated in both Adobe NLE's.
The 4 Audio channels are the problem. IIRC, there is also a Canon Capture program, usually shipped with the camera (some Sony's also have 4-channel Audio), and it will bring in the Video and all 4 channels. Not sure of the name, but I do recall mention being made of it.
For some background on the XL1's 4-channel Audio, you might want to search the PrPro forum, as this has been discussed in several threads in the past. You will find a lot more detail, than my feeble memory allows me to share with you.
    Good luck,

  • Trouble with PE8 and AVCHD video

    Hello,
I have a good spec. computer with a Intel Core i7 CPU 930 @ 2.8Ghz and a NVidia Quadro FX580 graphics card and want to be able to edit video from my Panasonic HDC-HS9 camcorder.
I can play video footage through Windows Media Player just fine, but the video is pixelated and generally not very good when viewed in the preview window in PE8.
I have got Quicktime version 7.6.6 but if I try and play the video through that it states that 'Error 2048: Couldn't open the file 00282.MTS because it is not a file that QuickTime understands'. I read somewhere that you need to have the latest version of QuickTime installed and was wondering if this a symptom of the problem.
I have downloaded GSpot v2.70a and looked at the file I am trying to play and it states that the Container File Type is 'MPEG-2 Transport Stream and Mime Type: video/mp2t.
My Panasonic manual says that I am recording in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec.
It just seems odd that image quality is perfect in WMP and poor in PE8? I have also noticed that when viewing thumbnails in PE8 organiser it does not display an image at all?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Bill Hunt,
Thanks for taking the trouble. My responses are in red.
QT is unlikely to be able to play the file. It is, however used by PrE for other playback operations. IIRC, 7.6.6 is the latest version, unless a new one has JUST hit. Now, that said, 7.6.2 & 7.6.3 exhibited problems in other Adobe programs. Many found 7.6.6 to be good, but some others did not, and rolled back to the "last known good" version, 7.5.5 (the one that I use on all computers, until 100% of Adobe users report otherwise). Thanks for the advice.
Now, when you have Imported the AVCHD material into an AVCHD Project Preset, is there a red line above the Clips in the Timeline, just below the Timeline Ruler? Yes, the red line is present.
What is the Magnification of your Program Monitor in PrE set to?. I use 100% for critical viewing, as Fit is a very poor emulation. By default ‘fit’ was selected – I changed it to 100% (and others) but no effect on image quality Now, I do not believe that PrE 8 has added the Program Monitor Quality settings, like in PrPro, but Rt-click on the Program Monitor and check to see if Quality is in the drop-down menu. You’re right, no quality control setting. There are playback settings but again tried all permutations.
Also, check to see if you have Hardware Acceleration (do not think that Win7 has that any more), and try adjusting that. I have run the DirectX diagnostic tool within Win7 and everything is fine.
Check for the very latest video driver, and if there is any newer one, install that. Got the very latest drivers from NVidia website.
Look at GPU Acceleration, and adjust that, then test. I have enabled the PhysX GPU acceleration within the NVidia control panel.
Otherwise, you system seems plenty beefy enough to handle AVCHD footage.
One last question - please tell us about your I/O sub-system, i.e. the HDD's, their size, speed, free space, controller type (Marvell 64xx/63xx SAS Controller that is up to date) and how you have them allocated.
I have two Hitachi 1TB SERIAL ATA 3-Gb/s HARD DRIVE WITH 16MB CACHE (7,200rpm) – no RAID configuration. I had the drives factory partitioned as detailed in the attached screen grab. Win7 64 bit and PrE is on the C drive and the video files in the H drive. If I ever get round to doing some editing I was going to use the D drive as a working space. I’ve seen some forum discussions that advise against partitioning but I thought I was keeping things neat and tidy by doing so?
    RAM - 6GB CORSAIR XMS3 TRI-DDR3 1333MHz
With other Video formats, that is the most important aspect of a computer, but with AVCHD, the
PS - you have upgraded to PrE 8.0.1 haven't you?
I don’t know if I am using the 8.0.1 version [The help about screen shows 8.0] as I am currently using the trial version of the software and do not have the option to check for updates through the help menu. I am very keen to buy the full version as I have used Photoshop Elements for some while and want to remain consistent. I also use Acrobat 9 Pro and there must be advantages in keeping everything with Adobe.
I don’t really understand video codec and don’t know whether it is right to assume that because the file plays fine through Windows Media Player, I can assume it is not a codec issue with PrE. Do WMP and PrE share codecs?
I am not sure I’ve given you anything to work with but again would appreciate any pointers. If nothing else I am learning quite a lot as I go along!

  • PE8 for mac or such like PE8?

    Hi,
i'm using PE8 on my Win7 machine. But i've got an mac at xmas (yippie). Now i want to change my license from pc to mac. but it seems there is no mac version of PE. i am a bit confused right now. cause all other adobe products are available for both OS. Anyway is another app existing that offers the same workflow like PE8 for mac? did you know that?
thank you very much and happy new year!!

There is no Mac version of PrE. The same is true for Adobe Audition and a very few other programs. Between PrPro 1.0 and CS3, there was no Mac version, but as of CS3, and now CS4, there is a Mac version.
I do not know how well, if at all, PrE will run under some of the PC-emulation programs, Parallels, Bootcamp, etc.? I know that Steve Grisetti has both Mac's and PC's, but do not recall hearing him speak of running PrE on his Mac's with some form of emulation. Might be possible, but might not be too. Maybe he will drop by and educate us both.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Still getting Display Error in PE8: "Display performance will be poor due to Incorrectly..."

I recently updated my OS from Windows Vista (32-Bit) to Windows 7 (64-Bit).  When working with PE8 in Windows Vista, I would receive the following error (signified by a red X in the lower left hand corner of the screen) whenever opening an existing project or creating a new one "Display Performance will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card or driver!"  To my consternation, I'm getting the same message after updating my OS with a CLEAN INSTALL of Window 7 64-bit.  I have the latest, stable Nvidia card driver 196.21 and have installed the latest patch from Adobe 8.0.1.  I'm interested to see if anyone is having this reoccurring GPU-incompatibility problem after installing the new patch.
Any solutions that don't involve simply turning off GPU playback are much appreciated.
As this is not a "workflow" problem I don't see the need in displaying an exhaustive list of all of my Computer assets.  However, here are the basics.:
    Computer: HP Pavillion M9150f
    Processor: Intel Quad-Core Q6600 2.4 GHZ
    Ram: 8 GB
Video Card: Nvidia GTS 250 1gb Ram, Latest WQHL Nvidia Driver 196.21
I have no other Video-Editing software installed, not even windows movie maker.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Adobe's silence on the issue leads one to believe they simply cant fix it.
That could well be a reason. However, if history is any indicator, Adobe is always tight-lipped about any plans, or works in progress, until they are ready for "prime time." Recently, a lot of podcasts and blog-spot pieces began appearing on changes in PrPro CS5. Many of these are directly related to GPU acceleration with certain nVidia cards, and a totally new render engine, Mercury. Still, other than some observations from select personnel, and a few demo videos, the complete details have not come forth. Also, there has been caution that Mercury might NOT make it into CS5. Only time will tell. So silence is not new from Adobe, and there could be various reasons for it, from re-coding being an impossible task to the patch/fix not being quite ready for release. PrPro CS4 got three significant updates, plus updates to Encore and AME. It was only about one week before those releases, that a single word hit the fora.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
HERE was the "sneak peak" on Mercury.
HERE is a thread on nVidia support for it.

  • PE8 unable to play 5.1 sound from an imported .m2ts

I import an .1080i 5.1 m2ts into PE8 and drag it onto the timeline.  The video lays out ok and the audio track indicates 5.1.  However, no sound track is displayed and no sound occurs during playback.  The m2ts plays fine from Windows Media Player.  I completely wiped my machine back to factory Win7 HP and the latest MS updates with a fresh install of PE8.0.1 but still no sound.  I've tried two presets:  NTSC/AVCHD/Full 1080i 30 5.1 channel and 1080i 30 5.1 channel with no luck.  What am I doing wrong?

Did you create a New Project with the AVCHD - 5.1 SS Audio Preset?
If so, then the Audio should go onto Audio 1 Track. If not, then it will go to a higher numbered Audio Track, and you will need to scroll the Timeline vertically to see that Audio Clip.
Also, when you Imported that Clip, did you allow it to Conform the Audio? This ARTICLE will give you some background.
    Good luck,

  • New to PrPro with specific workflow questions

    Hi, All!
I'm a 20+ year video veteran wading into the Premiere Pro pool this year. I have an extensive Avid and FCP background. Please don't hold that against me! I also realize this is long, but I'm trying to cram everything in so you can see where I've been to possibly re-route me, make it understandable, and at least a wee bit interesting.
I'm currently running PrPro 5.5.2 on a MBP 2.8 GHz Intrel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM. My media storage is a 2TB Sonnet Tempo RAID partition over eSATA to an Express34 card on the MBP.
I've sucessfully been doing AVC-Intra projects in PrPro for the last few months. This new project is different, and I want to see if there is any way to make my process more efficient. It's a very simple project, but it's very long. I'm finding as I do my workflow tests that the render, export and conversion process I had been doing for the short AVC-Intra projects (which were in the 5-7 minute range) are going to be very time consuming on this project, which has a hefty 2 1/2 hour run time over 14 modules. The editing is simple, if not cookie-cutter. It's creating the deliverables that's going to be the real bear here. I'm hoping your collective experience can offer me a better workflow that what I've cobbled together from my other knowledge and previous forum searches.
    The nitty gritty:
These videos  are basically putting a narrator to PowerPoint presentation and prettying it up with a music stinger at the open and close and adding a nicer-than-PPT transition betweeen the slides. I have an AIFF audio track for narration, AIFF music file from SmartSound, PNG graphic files (converted PowerPoint deck), & an animated Apple PNG transition. (from the Digital Juice people. It's one of their "Swipes".)
I started with a AVC-Intra timeline because that seemed to me to be the highest quality. I understand this was probably my first error. The renders are taking about run time for the module. With these elements and the following deliverables, what Sequence Settings do you recommend I should be using?
My deliverables will be myriad, which is why I want to export out a high-quality master file out of PrPro and then do the mulitple conversions to other sizes & codecs in a compression app. I have Encore, Sorenson Squeeze, and Compressor at my disposal. I'm guessing Encore will be my friend here, but it's also the one I know the least.
I tried exporting out a ProRes file. That took over 40 minutes on a 14 minute module. Then I converted that to a 640 x 360 H.264 to upload as an approval file. That took about 35 minutes. (I used Compressor becasue I have a droplet craeated for that and it's what I have been sucessfully been using to make small, good-looking files that my clients can reasonably download or stream).
Next I tried exporting out the highest quality H.264 at 1920x1080 and tried converting that using my Compressor droplet. That took 50 minutes to export out of PrPro, but it saves me one step of converting to a full size H.264. What I'm not sold on is whether or not that file is the best file I should be using to make the other deliverables.
What I will eventually need to deliver is a family of H.264 in various sizes from 1920x1080 to 320x180 & an authored DVD. So we're talking hours of processing for each one if I go with what I know.
Since the only thing that moves in these videos are a handful of animated transitions (10-15 per module) and a fade in & fade out, my gut tells me I could make this happen faster if I only changed a few things in my workflow. I'm just at a loss as to what those things might be.
Another little note. The client will wnat to  custominze these with different logos, so I will have to be able to get in, add or change a logo super, and re-export and re-convert all 2 1/2 hours multiple times. A more efficeint way to do that would be very helpful. Both for my sanity and my clients' budget.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
    deb

    >avoid 24 hours of processing
Adding to what was just posted
The computer I replaced in 2010 was based on the Pentium4 CPU (Windows XP with CS3) and when I was done editing my SD video and ready to create a DVD, I would start Encore before I went to bed, so it would have an ISO ready for disc writing in the morning
The computer I have now is described in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694 and my entire process of going from AVCHD to an SD AVI and then the encoding to ISO in Encore is just a bit over real time (maybe twice real time, but that is subjective, not based on a stop watch)
CPU cores and speed plus lots of ram (12Gig for my motherboard... 16Gig for newer technology motherboards) and multiple fast hard drives ALL make a difference
Your computer is, very simply, just barely able to run PPro... I have NO idea what is available in the Mac world, but to have "acceptable" speed, you need a new computer

  • PE8 Trials and Tribulations

This is the story of my four day experience installing and running PE8.  For some of you there are tips that may help fix your problems. For others you will simply relate to my experience.  For those considering purchasing PE8 I highly recommend that you do your homework before jumping in.
I've been using PE4 for the last two years and was quite happy with the features and flexibility.  I consider myself a prosumer/serious hobbyist and have extensive geek experience.  My usual jobs consist of importing HDV video from DV tape that was recorded with a Canon HV20. I combine the video with still shots from a Canon 20D in JPG format, throw in some music, and make short (<5 min) videos.  I render and export in Widescreen DVD format (both PC and disk) and to H.264 HD format (both PC and Blu-ray disk).
Last week I decided that I should finally upgrade to the newest version just to stay current. I didn't read any reviews or do any research since I've always had a high level of respect for Adobe quality. Unfortunately my experience with PE8 has not been good.  I've spent the better part of four days trying to get it working properly.  I've had successes and disapointments. Some of you may benefit from the fixes that I used and I hope they will get you going with a functional and stable platform.
    System:
Intel Core 2 Quad (Q6600) native 2.4 GHz, overclocked to 3.0 GHz
    4 GB RAM
1 TB striped RAID (RAID 0 for speed)
    Nvidia 8800 GT
    Samsung SH-S203B DVD RW
    Pioneer BDR-203 BD RW (Blu-ray)
    Vista x32
Installed PE8, updated to the latest version of QuickTime (7.65.17), and went merrily off working on my first project. I immediately started having stability issues.  Crashes without any warning, crashes with "out-of-memory" messages, crashes with "unknown cause" messages, crashes to the BSOD, couldn't render anything without a crash, overloaded processors even when the program was idle AND after it was closed, etc.  Not good.  All this on a platform that is extremely stable with every other software package I run.
After spending a couple days researching the issues I applied some system modifications that actually fixed most of the problems I was having. In fact the program only crashed once or twice following the changes - a tolerable frequency as long as I saved frequently. Prior to the changes it was crashing very frequently.
Here's the steps that got my PE8 running stable (insert reboots in the usual places):
    1) Uninstalled existing QuickTime and Nvidia drivers (QT 7.65.17, Nvidia ?)
    2) Installed QuickTime 7.3.1 and updated Nvidia GeForce drivers to v195.62
    3) Uninstalled GeForce Stereoscopic 3D Driver (this doesn't affect your 3D gaming unless you use 3D glasses)
    4) Disabled the Auto-Analyzer "feature" in Elements Organizer
    5) Disabled Background Rendering in PE8
After taking these steps the only really annoying problem that still existed is that "Adobe Premier Elements.exe" continues to run after closing the program. It hogs about 25% - 100% of the 4 processors but doesn't appear to be doing anything. And yes, I did leave it running overnight just to see if it would ever finish whatever it thought it was doing - nope.
Overall I was very happy that the mods fixed 90+% of my stability issues.  I completed my 4 minute video without much trouble and then...I tried to render the final product.  The standard DVD quality rendering works great - in both PC executable and disk products. The HD 720p works fine in PC executable format. But the one thing that I really need to produce is H.264 or MPEG2 at 1920x1080.  In the final product everything seems to render okay and the video starts out okay but at exactly 30 seconds the audio cuts out.  The interesting thing is that I can start from any point in the video and the sound lasts for 30 seconds and then dies.
I found a post where another person was having the exact same problem with standard resolution PC output and they were able to fix it by selecting the Advanced button to open the Export Settings, selecting the Audio tab, and then selecting MPEG for the audio format.  If you are having this audio problem you should definitely try the above fix!  Unfortunately, for the higher res HD output no such option exists under the audio tab.  There is perhaps a 3rd option to fix this problem and that is to buy another video editing program, read in the corrupt PE8 output and re-render. Apparently this has worked for some folks but I'm refusing to buy another program just to fix the errors of the editor I already have.
In summary, if you are having stability issues try the fixes I've listed above. They could potentially fix your problems and get you up and running. As for me, I can't find a way to get around the audio problem and it's the one last thing preventing me from having a functional PE8. I plan to return the product (ordered from Adobe online) in the hopes that voting with my dollars will encourage them to fix the PE8 problems. My impression of the current version of PE8 is that it is an abomination that should have never been released. It is substandard even for a beta version.  If Adobe can fix their PE8 problems and create a editor that is half as good as their other products they I will be the first to sign up for a new copy.
Good luck with whatever trials and tribulations that you may be experiencing with PE8. I'm glad that the program is working for some and for the rest I hope Santa delivers a serious PE8 patch!

Please post "PE8 Trials and Tribulations" as a customer review on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65045377-Premiere-Elements-8/product-reviews/B002IJA1DM/ref=dp _top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1http://.
I have the same computer and have experienced the same problems as you have. If you are able to get PE8 to function properly you will find that PE8 runs slower than PE7 due to all the new features (useless fluff).
You might also try deleteing any Reatek Audio drivers and allowing Win 7 to install it's driver, this seems to have helped my PE8 sound conflicts. I agree with you one hundred percent that PE8 should have been stabilized and the compatibility issues resolved before it was released. I guess things are done diferently at Adobe Bangalore.
