Peak Files in Windows 7

I just installed the RC of Windows 7 64 bit yesterday. I also reinstalled CS4. I opened project in Premeiere and it generates the peak files. However if I close Premiere and then reopen, it generates the peak files over again. I was previously using Windows 7 build 7000 for the past 5 monts and Premeiere worked fine, up until 3 days ago before I changed my HDD and reinstalled build 7100. Now this. Is there a setiing I'm missing here.

One tip when working with external HDD's. Always set the drive letter in the OS (do this for every computer, that the external might be used on). Mark the external with that drive letter assignment, just in case you transport to a new computer and have to do the same in the OS of that unit.
This will eliminate many of the re-Conforming and PEK file generation problems. Still, it does seem that CS4 might have issues under certain circumstances. I would just verify that the external has a permanent drive letter assignment to eliminate that possibility.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Premiere project opened - closed sequences and generating new peak files

    Hey guys,
I'm working on a big project, which resides on our Drobo. I have been sorting clips and working in sequences for the last couple days now. All media was loaded fine, and peak files were generated.
When I went to open the project this morning, all of the sequences I had been working on (accept for one) had been closed, instead of opening up like how I left them. Further, Premiere is now generating new audio peak files for the project, which is taking forever. Finally, it took 25 minutes to load all of the clips (about 800 or so). They finally finished loading, but I can't start working until the peak files are finished. All in all, i've been at work for 1 hour and still can't work.
Basically, why didn't Premiere open the project as I left it last night? Closed sequences, slow load time, generating new peak files?
I'm working with footage from RED, Sony FS700, GH4, and GoPro.
    My system:
    Creative Cloud
    Premiere Pro  8.0.1
    Windows 7 (64 bit)
    Intel 3770k
    Quadro k4000
    16 gb ram
    256 gb SSD (System)
    256 gb SSD (Render files)
5.39 TB Drobo via USB 3.0
    Thanks,
    Dan

Did you by any chance unplug/replug your USB drive?
Have you gone into Windows and "locked" the drive letter?

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 hangs while exporting and during peak file generation.

I have Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 (PRE7). I have a project which is using a single clip from a Mini-DV that was captured with Nero 8. Nero 8 was used because it was captured prior to installing PRE7. The file is 12GB and is on a USB disk drive because I don't have the space on my main hard drive (I have about 11GB free). My project doesn't do too much that's fancy. It merely uses about 20 minutes of the 60 minute Mini-DV captured AVI, and it uses simple transitions between each scene. I also have very simple titles at start and end. No themes or anything else.
I've seen two problems. 1) While editing the project, seemingly (but I'm not positive it's related) while the peek file was being generated, PRE7 would get into a state of using about 40% to 50% CPU, and it would not let me do anything else. The other problem, 2) While using "Share" to export the video to WMA for playback on PC (about 180MB estimated file size according to Adobe), the file is exported to about the last remaining 5 seconds, but then PRE7 goes into that mode of hanging with 40% to 50% CPU usage.
One time when it had this 50% CPU issue, I let it sit overnight, and the export was finished in the morning. The export that time was to a 90MB FLV for posting to the "web" according to the Share wizard. But when I was doing the above (issue #2), it went into the 50% CPU usage but didn't finish after waiting around 2 hours. Even if I were to let it sit that time, and it were to finish, it seems like something's wrong and that this is unacceptable.
When this happens, and PRE7 goes into 50% CPU utilization, there is no pacifier or percentage bar advancing. It usually happens near 100% finished. Only one time did it complete successfully after leaving it unattended at 90% complete for an extraordinary amount of time.
    To recap:
    C:\ hard drive ---> PRE7, my project.
E:\ USB drive ---> 12GB source AVI file and destination for export.
I saw elsewhere on this forum that someone imported a mini-dv captured AVI into Window Movie Maker and then exported it to Mini-DV from that app. This solved that person's problem with hanging during peak file creation. I had the 50% hang issue during peak file generation but I'm not sure it was related to peak file generation. A peak file was generated in a project which, when exported with share as mentioned above, still did the hang 50% CPU issue. Regardless, I will try the import/export/movemaker thing and report back but I've been trying enough things that I wanted to take a second to ask for assistance.
Does anyone have this issue, and is there a patch or fix?
I might be able to provide a user mode dump of the 50% CPU adobe process. There is some call stack information and I'm wondering if developers would want this info if they don't already have a solution/fix to this bug.
    Thanks for any help.

I have some more info on the hang which I've been experiencing during export/share of a project which uses an AVI as its one main clip. Adobe Premiere Elements 7 (PRE7) appears to be hanging because it's looping endlessly in ImporterAVI.prm. I'm wondering if this info can be passed onto Adobe developers and/or if I can submit this information elsewhere for such processing. I also have a process dump file which might be helpful, not to mention the original project files.
I used Process Monitor to help analyze this situation, and prior to PRE7 getting into the endless loop, it appears to be reading from the AVI file little by little, and WMEncodingHelper.exe is writing out little by little to the destination file, both of which I would expect. When PRE7 gets to the end of the import/export, Process Monitor appears to show all the aforementioned disk activity ceasing. I see neither process reading or writing. This would be normal if the share/export procedure had completed. But PRE7 is not complete. It is hung and is operating at 50% CPU utilization.
Far below in this post are technical details which may be helpful to an Adobe developer determine why the importer could get into this endless loop. In those details, there is a jump instruction, "jb ImporterAVI!xImportEntry+0xf32", which will always jump if a particular compare always turns out a certain way. But in my review of the counters being compared, it never will get to a point of exiting. When I modify a flag (the carry flag) to be 0, the loop exits. When I did this, my export/share of my project completed successfully. So it was done, but for some reason, PRE7 was looping and looping in its AVI importor instead of completing the export (aka "Share").
I cannot say that this certainly indicates a bug with PRE7, but it seems to me that there's enough data for Adobe to be at least investigating this particular issue. I'm not the only person who has seen this as there was at least one other message describing the same problem which the user resolved by effectively re-creating the AVI file via a no-op import/export into and out of MovieMaker. My AVI also goes through MovieMaker, import/export, without a hitch.
In a sense, I view PRE7's "share" as essentially an import, processing of imported information (i.e., effects and transitions), and an export. It's an import of all clips into the project at the right times, a processing of all effects, and finally an export to a destination. I realize this is simplistic, but the point I'm making is I have a simple project with a single AVI, and it appears that the "import" portion of PRE7's Share option is choking on the only clip used by this project. I also don't have much but simple transitions and a beginning/ending title on the project, so I'm not thinking this use of PRE7 is much more than what I'm doing with MovieMaker when importing/exporting this AVI.
I fully agree that optimum hardware can be either required or critical for certain types of video editing, but PRE7 is a consumer program and I'm not using anything extensive about it and the symptoms are that PRE7 is looping on its import of a file other programs don't have a problem with. I already tried purchasing a 1TB external, which I'm glad I did, but I really think Adobe developers should look at this issue. There may be a problem with handling certain AVI clips used in a project when those clips come from certain sources. If there is an issue, perhaps it could warrant a fix that would make PRE7 more compatible with these other clips.
Does Adobe have a procedure for people to upload (or mail) projects and files to it so that they can troubleshoot why the importer gets into this state? I also mentioned earlier that I have a full user-mode dump of the process which may be of value to a dev. Can I submit this information anywhere?
    Here are textual technical details:
    Plug-in which loops: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0\Plug-ins\en_US\ImporterAVI.prm
The following are the instructions at the "bottom" of the loop which never ends. Below, I put "***" at the jump instruction I mentioned earler. If I force the carry flag to be 0 at that point, and the jump is skipped, the export completed successfully. Additionally, notice that [esp-0x1c] is 0x2000, and that both eax and edi are 0. When I see it loop, eax stays at 0 and never reaches 0x2000. I wonder if something about the AVI is causing values used by this importer to be such that it causes this endless loop, and if that's the case, and if such values are valid/good, I'm wondering if the importer can be fixed by being able to detect such values so as to not choke (if in fact it's an importer issue).

  • Generating Peak File for...

Wow, this has been going on for 3-4 hours already.
Unacceptable, and I can't find any reference to this process in the Adobe Docs for PP. I have no idea where it is in the process. Is it almost done? Does it have another 12 hours to go? What is the deal with this? I have not touched my computer in hours.
I have a PP Project with about 10 bins with about 1 hour of video in each.
Should I break my project down so I have 10 PP files with 1 hour of video per project?
I was hoping to keep everything in one PP file, but that is looking like a really bad idea right now. I don't remember having to suffer through anything like with when working with Final Cut Pro.
Will these stupid Peak Files be saved? Is there a chance they will get corrupt and have to regenerate? This took a whole half day, and more, since it's still ongoing. This is on my MBP 2.4GHz. If I want to move the files back and forth between my laptop and my Windows Core i7 920 desktop (I have Production Premium on both platforms), will I have to suffer the Peak File Generation everytime?
All video was captured in OnLocation, straight from the camera. That part of the process seemed really cool. This part with the Peak File is really lame.
Any tips on getting to a workable workflow with PP, or should I just bag it, and buy another editor (Final Cut Express would even probably do the simple cut edits I want to do) ? I do most everything in After Effects.

The solution? I'm going to edit on my windows desktop.
OMG, what have I gotten myself into?
Same problem on my PC. Premiere Pro 4.2 on Windows 7 64 bit. Freshly installed. All legit software.
I made a new project, import all the video, and let it generate all peak files.
It finishes. Close Premeire. Open Premiere... Generating Peak File for...
    My heart sinks so low.
I delete the .pek files and the database files and in the preferences, I set it to save cache and database files to a folder within my project folder.
It dutifully generates all new .pek file and database files. I watch it write them one by one. It does not write anything in the original Adobe shared cache folders. It completes. I quickly edit up one segment, just so I have some work to show for my 4 days of messing around with this.
    Close Premiere. Open Premiere.
    Generating Peak File for...
    I'm speechless.
Footage was captured to disc using OnLocation on a Mac from a Panasonic AG-HVX200a via fireware.
If you want to call me an idiot, point out where I'm not doing something right.
If you want to blame my rig(s) just know that I push these systems hard daily with ZERO issues in other apps.
I'm blaming Premiere at this point. Something about how this program works is just not right. In both cases it writes over already existing .pek files. I have 4 channels per clip, so 4 .pek files for every clip I have. It's towards 1000. pek files.

  • Peak file location in CS5 PP

Where are the Peak files saved in CS5 Premiere Pro?
Running on a PC in Win 7 64 bit.  I am presently using wherever the default file locations are.

    Thanks for your fast response.
The problem with the default location is that is on the C: drive.  And I want to minimize added files on that drive.
I turned on the check mark to “Save Media Cache files next to originals when possible.”  But the Peak files still seem to be going to the C: drive.  Then I browsed to the subdirectory that has the PP project files and it now lists it as such in the Edit>Preferences>Media window.  But the Peak files still seem to go to the C: drive.
And to make matters worse, the next time I open another project in another subdirectory it has the box checked (that is good), but it is pointing to the subdirectory I last used.
    Am I missing something?

  • Generating Peak File won't quit generating it

Captured roughly 2 hours of video using my Sony PD170 (don't laugh, I know it's antiquated, getting new one) with Windows Live Photo Gallery, (since PP CS4 quit importing video) and then imported that captured video into PP. I used 3 tapes to capture so there are 3 separate video clips:
    tape 1 - 7.78GB appx 38 min.
    tape2 - 7.80GB appx 38 min.
tape3 - 7.68GB appx 38 min. (this is the one giving me fits)
I have a 3 month new- Windows 7 based Dell Precision T3500 with a :C drive that has 151 GB Free and a D drive with 1.65 TB free. (RAM shouldn't be an issue ((i don't think)) as Bill Hunt suggested on a similar issue on another post)
I captured all the video fine, then when I imported the 3 clips into PP, it (PP) did it's generating peak file thing. But when it got to the last file, the bar on the bottom fills up to the end but just sits there. (I left it like that for a few hours and still nothing)
Suggestions from Bill Hunt on just 1 other posting I found on forums suggest it may have to do with an EXTERNAL hard drive this other person had using via USB, my fine folks in IT installed me an internal HDD of the 2TB variety (Thanks IT, LOVE IT).
PP freezes and I can't do anything, it locks up and says "Not Responding". I attempted to open that 1 file with StreamClip to see if I could fix anything that may be wrong with it but Stream Clip says it didn't recognize it.
Any suggestions? To me it sounds like a corrupt file, because the other two work just great, same format, shot on same camera back to back to back and imported the exact same way.
    Thanks in advance.

Okay, here's an update to all my issues I have been having with capturing, editing, copying dvds and just a slow computer with Adobe:
First, thanks to all who responded, but to anyone with similar issues, listen up: I was experiencing many issues, not just the one noted in this discussion and what fixed it for me was to UPGRADE ADOBE PREMIERE PRO. I was using PPCS4, which as I said worked fine on my old computer. IT installed my extremely fast Dell Precision T3500 and of course migrated pretty much everything from my old computer to new one. That's when all the issues began, and to this day don't know why because according to Adobe Website and Dell website, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 DOES work or IS CAMPITABLE with this computer.
After many efforts to find a solution, IT thought, lets try the upgrade to CS6 since I was 2 versions behind... so after applying for the Cloud membership (thanks Adobe, love it so far) and downloading CS6.... WHAM BAM, SPANK YOU MA'AM. It works terrific!
My video I mention above works perfectly and didn't kick me out once! It edited like it's supposed to!
    Would anyone know why?
Special Thanks to Bill who's helped me more than he knows on this and other issues... and everyone esle who posted.
@CompNovice- I was running Premiere Pro CS4 and the video did play on Windows Media Player fine without any issues, it looked good.
@ Stuart-  I could open the video both in PP and Media Player, editing issues with PP (froze up and kicked me out) but played out fine with Media Player. 1. I didn't get to the point of Duplicating it although I recaptured it a couple of times (Vidoe 3 that was causing me headache) 2. Again, I didn't get to the point of capturing in segments although I did try the entire video with streamclip and exporting to fix any issues and Streamclip didn't recognize the video (strange)

  • Photoshop Elements 7 Crashes When Peak Files Are Generated

Have a PC with 80g HD, Pentium 4, 2g (400hz) RAM running Windows XP.  PSE7 generates peak files each time project is opened. When blue bar at bottom right of screen reaches 100%, Elements 7 freezes and must be shut down using Windows task manager.
I have copied the file from 340g ext. HD back to C drive (the location of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 program) and this has not resolved the problem.
I note that this appears to have been a common problem since 2006 (earlier versions of Photoshop) with Adobe.
    Can anyone help.

  • Peak files crashing Premeire

I am still having problems with the computer crashing when I import certain files from external drives. As the peak file is created it freezes and the computer has to be powered down manually. I have not found any way to fix this. After multiple trys and many restarts it will work but I wasted over two hours today trying to get this to work. What can cause this crashing problem.
    Windows 7 Pro
    2820 processor
    16 gig RAM
    NVIDIA 3000m cuda card

Here's what I recommend as a good starting point for an edit system:
C: System (OS and Programs only)
    D: Projects
    E: Scratch/Cache/Previews
    F: Media
    G: Exports
Here's what I recommend as a bare minimum:
C: System (OS and Programs only)
    D: Projects/Scratch/Cache/Previews
    E: Media/Exports
    All internal drives.
You might start by getting up to at least that minimum and seeing if you still have an issue.

  • Premiere Elements 9 Freezes on "Generating Peak File"

Help!  This seems to be a common problem with posts all over the web going back to PE3.  I can't believe Adobe hasn't fixed this!
I have spent days on this, trying every solution I've found in posts in Adobe Forums and elsewhere on the Net.  None seem to work for me.
Specifics:  I have PE9 running on an HP desktop with 2T of disk, 9G of RAM, so resources are not an issue.  I have one hour (about 10G) of video imported to PE through Firewire from my Panasonic GS-500.
Almost every time PE generates a Peak file, it freezes at 99% and then I'm stuck.  Have to force PE to close.
I have tried importing the file into Windows Movie Maker and then generaing a new file.  Adobe won't import it.
Tried recapturing the video.  Same problem.
I love the flexibility I get with PE.  But I'm just about to toss it in utter frustration.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks

As you know, miniDV is far and away the easiest format in the world to edit on a computer. I've never heard of Premiere Elements having problems working with it. But I trust you that there are people who are.
That said, can you give us more specs on your machine? What operating system? Have you manually gone to the update site and ensured you have every available update?
How much free, clean defragmented space on each of your drives? How fast a processor? How much RAM?
Have you cleaned and defragged your hard drive(s) recently? The only thing I've known to cause this are related to hardware -- in particular a lack of hard drive space. Though you've got a 2 terrabyte C drive? I can't imagine there could be enough clutter and tmp files fragging up a drive that size, but it's certainly possible. Especially if it's more than a couple of years old.

  • Peak file handling problem?

At first I thought this was a video playback issue, but in fact it's more like a peak file handling or priority problem. If you insert several long audio files (>20 mins) into the multitrack you will soon see that scrolling by ctrl + mouse wheel or dragging the scroll bar at certain resolutions will disrupt metering, time display, everything. And apart from being terribly annoying, it's also a total disregard of obvious priorities. With such a program, seamless audio and video playback must have the highest priority (= THE Output), then metering, then time display. Redrawing the clips on the timeline should come at the end of the list, and under no circumstances may it hinder the functioning of the primary outputs, as it does now (on the PC and Mac alike, but it's worse on the former).
I firmly believe that this issue should be adressed first, before replacing any "missing" features, because this is a fundamental conceptual problem.

Hi MC and RJ, thanks for the input. I actually tried two different machines. One was a Gigabyte EP35-DS4 with an E8500 proc, 2 gig mem, nVidia 7300GT graphics, with XP, with the mobo audio as well as the MOTU 828mk3 (both ASIO and MME modes). The other was a Gigabyte H55M-USB3 with Core i5 660, builtin Intel gfx, 2 gig ram, an almost perfectly clean and empty Vista 32, and the mobo soundchip. Both machines acted roughly the same. The audio files I used were ordinary 16 bit stereo files, mostly about 40 minutes long each (different ones). I install the trial (everything at deafult), load two files into the multitrack (no fx, no routing, no nothing), hit play, and with a timeline window of about 50 seconds, I drag the scroll bar from the left extreme to right extreme with a speed that it travels for 10-15 seconds. While I'm doing this, the metering and the time display (as well as the video playback, if there's a video loaded) become jerky, at times even freeze for half a second or so (audio is undisturbed). Sometimes better, sometimes worse. With mono files it's less pronounced.
But even in simple cases, if I just hit play and not touch the scroll bar, when the red play cursor reaches the right side, and the timeline is redrawn, sometimes this is enough to momentarily freeze the video playback.
My colleague says he saw some of this with the beta on his Mac (I don't have the specs).
MC, are you saying you don't experience this behaviour?

  • CS 5.5 constant regeneration of peak files when opening a project.

    Hello
I would like to have a definite answer why does PPro CS5.5 just like others before it, keep regenerating peak files every time I open a project.
    Thank you.

After doing some investigation and research it seems that the fault is not with Adobe Software (it still could be) but rather an OS and the way it handles permissions.
Windows 7, 64-bit seems to ignore any and all permissions and policies settings for the files and folders. It does it in a peculiar way. While it doesn't seem to prohibit writing to a folder that it marks as a read only (and won't let you change it) it makes it look as such to the apps that are trying to do this writing. Even as the new peak files are written the Adobe Premiere Pro does not seem to realize that.
Two things were done to remedy the situation:
    Making Adobe Premiere Pro run as administrator (why on earth do I have explicitly make it so when my account is an Administrator account is beyond me);
Downloading and installing system registry record that allows one to take the ownership of a file or a folder (an option appears in the right-click context menu when you right click on a folder or a file) which allows one to remove "CREATOR OWNER" as a user name from the permissions in a security tab of the folder properties and also to actually enable full rights to one's user account that will not go away after clicking apply.
    Problem is solved!
PS; have no idea how to fix similar problem people have on Mac Os, sorry.

  • Generating Peak File

I am having problems with the last file that I open after downloading from my camcorder. This has happened everytime that I have created a DVD using Premiere Elements 8. Everytime I try to open the last file it says it is Generating Peak File and it will lock up on the last file everytime. Up till now the last video file hasnt been worth keeping, but this time I need it in my finished product. Thanks.

A lot depends on a lot of things, NOKNOT. It could be related to the type of camcorder your video is coming from or how you have your Premiere Elements project set up.
But this usually indicates a lack of hardware or hard drive space or a poorly tuned computer. How much free, freshly defragged space is on your C drive? Are you using a second hard drive? Is it formatted NTFS or FAT32 (as they come from the factory) and how much free, defragmented space is on it?
What operating system are you running? If it's a Windows machine, have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensure you've got even the non-critical updates? Have you got the latest version of Quicktime?
When was the last time you ran Advanced System Care on on your system? You might be surprised how much a good cleaning and tuning can do.

  • Premiere CS4 Pro Hangs - Generating peak file

Windows Vista Ultimate. Dell M1730 Intel X7900 2.8 GHz 4.0 gigs of memory  Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT with SLI off  175 Gigs available on raid for speed drive
I basically opened 10.4 G  52 minute AVI file imported via MovieMaker. I wanted to cut two segments about 3 or four minutes.
I can progress a bit at time before I get a not responding lockup. Once a blue screen of death.
On the not responding I noticed the "generating peak file in lower right corner with a gold filled progress bar.
I am doing dragging a marked clip to the sequence, two and crashed each time. Also crashed in process of finding my start and end points a few times.  Then I added a transition and crashed there as well.
Any suggestions to do this without crashing?

For BSOD, or program crashes and hangs, this ARTICLE might help you track down "clues," as to what is going wrong, when it goes wrong.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
