Pegasus R4 configuration inquiries

Recently picked up a pegasus r4 after much review and input from forum members, thanks alot!
So far so good, it did take about 24 hours for it to do a full synch but transfer have been insanely fast.
A couple questions;
1) currently it is set-up out of the box as RAID5 which is OKAY with me, 3TB is good for now until prices come down on 2TB drives (western digitals), but is there anything to keep the system optimal or should I configure it differently then out of the box? So as of now..I made no adjustments or configurations to it.
2) Is renaming the Pegasus drive in finder as easy as it is for any other external drive? I dont want to muck up permissions or cause a problem between the pegasus/pegasus utility and the Mac...so double clicking the name on the desktop and renaming it from PROMISE PEGASUS to RAID Disk that easy?
any other tips are welcome.
thanks again!

Durite, you need to run the Promise Utility Software that should be on your r6.  Once it's installed in your applications folder open it up and you can run the wizard which will help you format for Raid 10.  Maybe a backup copy of that Promise Utility software.
If you have any more issues let me know.  I formatted mine for Raid 10 and now have mine in Raid 0 for speed(500/500MBps write and read).
I forgot all about this post and solved it a while ago.   My bad.

  • Final Cut Pro 10.1 does not detect Promise Pegasus

    HI,
I would like to change my location of where events are stored at for FCPX to my Promise Pegasus (6x3TB, configured to RAID 5), which is what i bought it for, but sadly, my FCPX does NOT detect my Pegasus at all in Library. It does however detect other storage devices like when my SD card is plugged in etc, and my macintosh hd.
I spent alot of time reading up and googling and some advices say it must be configured to MAC OS Extended (journaled) which, when i checked, it is! So I don't know what's the problem now.
It is getting very frustrating and I can't seem to get it to work. Would really appreciate if any kind souls can help me out on this!

Did you solved that isue? I have the same problem.
    Thanks

  • Need help with workflow: New iMac with SSD & HDD and Pegasus Promise

Hello everyone! I've decided to upgrade my iMac and ordered an i7 with the SSD and HDD drive configuration as well as the Pegasus Promise 12TB drive. I've been researching as to what's the best way to manage both the SSD and HDD drives and I really haven't seen an end-all answer. Now with the purchase of the Pegasus Promise, I'm more confused as to what's the best approach to take. Here are my thoughts:
    1. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive and the HDD for the users folder.
    2. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the HDD for the users folder, and photos and pics onto the Pegasus.
    3. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the Pegasus for the users folder, and the HDD for ???
    4. Just use the Pegasus drive as the boot drive and use it for everything. (being that it's a RAID drive, then all my files are backed-up already)
Majority of my space-filling files are my iTunes folder, tons of pictures from using Aperture, and iMovie for videos.
Thanks in advance for everyone's input and help!

I'm working on a similar premise.  i7, SSD, HDD, Promise raid, etc.
I'm nowhere near as savvy as a lot of the people here, but after a lot of research I decided that focusing on how the Pegasus gets configured is the most important for me.  My concerns are for a business in photography, btw.
I can't budget the 12TB unit so I'm trying to make the most of either the R4-8tb or th R6-6tb.
I'm planning to launch the applications from the SSD.  I will use the Mac HDD for typical non-photographic files, iTunes (mine's not so big), and standard fair.  This is all backed up via Time Machine to a 3TB Western Digital MyBook for the time being.
As for the Pegasus, I believe I've settled on: taking an R6-6tb unit, placing the 6th drive in my firesafe from the moment I get it.  Configuring the remaining 5 drives in a level 5 setup.  Leaves me 4TB to get started and buys me a few succesful quarters to plan on daisy chaining another unit when memory is needed.  This way, I may not have maximum possible drive space, but I've got a replacement drive on the ready should I experience a drive-failure.  Then, I'm not sitting on pins and needles while I await a replacement; they'll simply be shipping me a new "spare".
I still need to actually speak to someone @ Promise to make sure this will work, as I stated: I"m learning as I go here.  If this is an acceptable Raid setup, you would have 8TB available to you.
Personally, I am far more comfortable running systems in series and building the size as I go (to a point) than putting so much data in a single array.
[Edit] The raid bay is mainly for the Lightroom catalog, and I use standard external drives to store redundant backups off-site (1TB at a time).

    Hey x)
I just got my Blackberry yesterday (I'm from France) with Universal Mobile- Bougues Telecome, forfait bloqué pour BlackBerry.
In that "package" i have SMS/mms ,internet and emails unlimited.
But i can't go to internet , its not working and when I'm trying to configure the mail option in "advanced option" , I don't have any kind of confirmation message.
I tried on the website but I got that error message:
    "Cannot create account:
This BlackBerry(R) device is not registered with your wireless service provider.
Please register this device and verify that the URL of the current web site matches
the one provided by your wireless service provider.
    To register:
    1. In the Application list on your device, click Options, or click Settings Options.
    2. Click Advanced Options > Host Routing Table.
    3. Click the Menu key and click Register Now.
If the error persists, contact your wireless service provider."
And so as I said, I did that manipulation but I don't have a confirmation when I put "host routing table".
And In the email configuration I just have the professional thing.
Can you please help me ?

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan enabled on your account with your carrier or mobile provider?
You must, in order to get the RIM push email functions you are looking for, as well as addtional BlackBerry data services such as the internet browser, Facebook for BlackBerry, BlackBerry Messenger, and much more.
So, call your carrier and inquire about having the BlackBerry Data Plan added to your account.
    Good luck.

  • Small fast network with Mac mini server and Promise Pegasus?

I have 7 Mac Pros and iMacs that need to be connected to the same storage. I'm doing non MPI-based numerical modeling so the transfer rates have to be fast but not infiniband fast. I'm considering a setup with a Promise Pegasus thunderbolt RAID connected to a Mac Mini running Lion server for Access controll/Roaming homer directories. The Mac Pros and iMacs would the be connected via 1Gb ethernet.
My question is where the bottlenecks in this setup would be. The server software/hardware? The network? What else am I forgetting

I assume you're looking at Mac mini because you've already run the numbers on Mac Pro and ruled it out. I wonder how many buyers are opting for Mac mini solely for those Promise Thunderbolt arrays.
I also assume that each of your users is currently using a single gigabit Ethernet port to connect to the LAN.
If these assumptions are accurate, then I think that a Mac mini will work as long as you and your users have appropriate expectations. The win from putting this server in place won't be networked storage that outperforms an internal SATA drive, although in bursts it probably can. The solution you've described is smart because it's centralized, securable and adds a layer of data protection (RAID).
You asked about bottlenecks. I can think of three, two of which you can work around now or in the near future. The first is Mac mini's slow internal hard drive(s). You'll have a solution in hand: Boot Mac mini from the array. Some consider that to be a controversial choice, but you shouldn't spend extra for the Mac mini server with dual 7200 RPM drives. The less costly Core i7 configure-to-order upgrade will give you a bigger boost.
Booting from the array also protects you from the most likely "repair" scenario for Mac mini: Swapping out your entire machine.
The second issue is Mac mini's lack of an expansion bus. If you get more users or start using apps that demand more from the LAN, you might want to fire up additional gigabit Ethernet ports. Mac mini has just one. At present, the only way to add a gigabit port is with a Thunderbolt PCIe bus expander. Early next year, there should be more options that connect directly or via an intermediate bus like ExpressCard/34 or USB 3.0.
The one limitation you're powerless to work around is RAM. Mac mini tops out at 8 GB. That meets requirements, but it will be tight if you try to use Mac mini as a client and a server. I deploy them headless so no one's tempted to use the console.
You can improve your odds that gigabit will cut it by using heavy, short Cat6 cables and a switch dedicated to the Mac LAN. Use Mac mini's built-in Wi-Fi to keep Remote Desktop and other low-priority traffic off the wire.
Whatever solution you choose, I wish you the best of luck.

  • Help Needed Configuring Post Set Up For Big Indie Feature:

We’ve got incredible performances from an amazing cast of well-known character actors from film, TV and stage, a unique and inspiring script, and some truly beautiful, cinematic footage. And now — it’s all about putting it together…
But I’m having trouble finding an accurate, effective and (most importantly) a DETAILED workflow accommodating the latest version of Premiere, to post a LENGHTY feature film shot on the RED Epic in 5k FF.  I’ve reviewed videos here, but in conducting edit tests, I'm encountering all manner of glitches and problems, and need to ensure that I am properly configuring our post workflow and all of the associated hardware.
I’ll be dividing the film into project file “reels” to help keep things manageable.  As editor and DP, it's also most important for me to edit on a 4k timeline (to take advantage of reframing and stabilization of the 5k). Footage is on three Pegasus II RAIDS.
There will be a LOT of FX work done outside of Premiere in AE (and other compositing and graphics programs).  I’m planning to finish in Resolve, outputting at 4k.
I have the new Mac Pro with:
    - 2.7GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5 with 30MB of L3 cache
    - 64GB (4x16GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC - 4X16GB
    - 1TB PCIe-based flash storage
    - Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each
A Sonnet Echo Express III Desktop 3-Slot (with Thunderbolt upgrade) housing the following:
    - Red Rocket
    - Connection card for HP LTO5 Ultrium 3000 Sas Ext Tape Drive
If needed, I’m open to acquiring other cards or hardware, too (possibly adding the Red Rocket-X to the mix).  And if the referral of a PAID individual with firsthand knowledge of such a setup – to at least help with the initial set up and configuration – is what I need, I’m open to that, as well.
We truly have an amazingly powerful compilation of principal photography, and a great story to tell — I just need to overcome this major hurdle of setting up our post.  As a somewhat newbie to Premiere, I greatly appreciate any advice, pointing-me-in-the-right-direction, or suggestions of individuals to help oversee this for compensation and screen credit that anyone can offer me here...
    Many Thanks,
    Bill

Oooh...big involved questions and many of them.
    If it helps..
A few things I know I would do before even starting on the actual film edit
..is give the new system a massive shakedown.
Thrash the hardware  and software with test footage , graphics and audio etc.
    Test the pipelines and workflows.
Set up a BACKUP routine. DO NOT RELY ON AUTOSAVES
Would  NOT do  O.S updates once started with a stable system.
Me...I would not use a Dynamic Link workflow for FX.  (I would use D.Is)
Would create a flow chart plan for the edit and post prod to avoid generation losses, efficiencies and scheduling.
Work toward  lock downs before FX , audio, CC and Grade. (Avoid the trap of being creatively impatient for the benefit of a smooth edit experience)
    Sort this first...
I'm encountering all manner of glitches and problems, and need to ensure that I am properly configuring our post workflow and all of the associated hardware.
You might want to specify some of this stuff and see if you get answers here or elsewhere..
Suggestion - can you wait for next version of PPro ? - coming very soon evidently. Start with latest version so you don't need to update midstream.  A feature takes a long time to post and some cool new  features may help. eg  Master Clip enhanced.
Have you considered Prelude in the workflow to log and set up your project. ( Never used it myself but I would consider/investigate  it for long form)
Good luck and enjoy the edit process.

  • What is the ideal RAID 5 logical drive configuration to use with editing 1080p on FCPX?

    Hello,
I invested in one of the new Late 2013 Mac Pros (8-core 3GHz, dual Fire Pro D500 w/ 3GM VRAM each, 32GB RAM), along with a Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt (ver 1) RAID because I wanted a fast and supremely smooth editing experience versus slow, laggy, drop frame performance I had been experienceing in my previous Mac (a mid-2010 27" iMac 2.8 GHz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, Radeon 5750 with 1GB VRAM) that had media stored on a single 3TB firewire drive.
The RAID came pre-configured with 6 x 1TB Toshiba drives giving me a Logical Drive that has 5TB capacity, 128kb stripe size, 512byte sector size, with Read Ahead/Write Back cache policy. I've also enabled "Forced Read Ahead" using terminal.
    THE PROBLEM:
Even with this super fast media storage that gives me about 600MB/sec data transfer rate, I'm still sometimes experiencing lag and stuttered playback from the timeline (In all fairness, the stuttering only happens for a few seconds then plays fine, but the lag can be frustrating when I'm trying to click through the timeline to check edits). The footage I work with is 1080p mov files from Canon DSLR that are transcoded to ProRes 422 and Proxy during import into FCPX. I never edit with camera-native formats, always with ProRes. I also always close all other applications, eventhough all the power boasted by the Mac Pro shouldn't have a problem with that. I've tested the video cards by playing multiple 1080p H.264 files at once and it played about 10 simultaneously without a hitch. I've also edited under a new user and still the issue remains. My conclusion is that the lag comes from the RAID. (I did a test project with having my library saved on the internal flash storage and editing improved dramatically with speed and responsiveness, which signals that my problem must lie with the RAID).
    THE QUESTION:
Is there a preferred or recommended stripe size and sector size that would cure my problem? Is it because it's RAID 5 even though I'm using 6 disks and getting tremendous sustained data xfer rates?
    OTHER RELATED INFO:
My FCPX import settings copies all files into the library and I have Optimized and Proxy checked. My projects are also saved in the same library so everything is contained in one place.
My projects are mostly 40 minute wedding videos 1080p at 23.98fps with lots of short video clips during montage segments, no more than 2 video tracks during the wedding the wedding ceremony.
I frequenly repair permissions on the internal boot drive. Sometimes trash FCPX preferences when performance gets ridiculous or other glitches happen, like audio refusing to play, or the timeline plays no video just audio.
Thank you! Any help or advice is appreciated!

    Hi,
Making our tablespace in different directory does not improve the performance. See, Basic thing does if you are lauching your text file from different directory
say Drives C , D and F respectively does your hit any performance (your OS is installed on Drive C). I don't thinnk you will getany boost up performance. See Basicaltl what is happening is that, try to launch you textpad and try to open the files from any there then you file will open immediately, if you ask me the reason behind that, you application is already loaded in the Memory to give the Service (same as ORACLE Instance). That's the difference.

  • How do I configure my Mbpro Mid 2012 to shutdown on UPS ?

I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 with OSX 10.10 connected to an older APC UPS via USB.
On my MacBook I also have a WD myBook ext. Harddrive.
In Settings I see the UPS but I have no settings to activate a shutdown process - I only can dim the monitor.
Unfortunately I dont have the APC software anymore and it's nowhere to download yet.
So I need help in getting my MacBook configured that it shuts down when on UPS power after at least 5-10min automatically.
This is because it runs 24 hours per day and I am not there maybe at night if a power failure occurs.

Pegasus R4 has two Thunderbolt ports. Daisy-chain with Display at the end.

  • Macbookpro and Thunderbolt Pegasus Issue? Pink Monitor!

I have a 17" Macbook Pro and run Lion, with a Samsung monitor (SA550) attached. I just got the Promise Raid 4 and attached it.
The Raid 5 takes 10 hours to configure. In the meantime, I've attached my Samsung monitor (with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter) to the other port. The dispay is now VERY pink.
This is not a know issue, to my understnading, and according to the people at Pegasus and Apple, they think the same thing. I'd love anyfeedback if you've had the same issue.
    Thank you,
    Dugmoore

I switched from a HDMI cable to a VGA cable, then used a mini disp;lay port to a VGA adapter. Pink screen is gone and it works fine!

Can multiple thunderbolt2 storage devices connected to a mac mini [ 2014 ], via daisy chain, be configured to work as a single volume on RAID 5?

    Yes.
Normally you would buy a hardware RAID5 solution like the Promise Pegasus R4 or the Drobo 5D however recently some new software has been released for the Mac to allow creating RAID5 software RAIDs. See http://www.softraid.com
Apple's own Disk Utility cannot create RAID5 software RAIDs.

  • Using Pegasus as LUN via a SANLink

    Hi,
My company currently is using MetaSAN with a fairly complex dynamic drive system from Compellant.  The reliablity of the drive system has been good, but the peformance and cost/performance ratio is not ideal for Multimedia production.   The Compellant drives are simply not designed for AV frame-based data transfer, and it at times, the MetaSAN system can be very touch with sytem updates and licensing, and endless issues with binding to our AD servers.  We also shouldn't need to use 15,000 RPM drives for the HD video production (mostly ProRes), but due to the way the Compellant architecture is setup, this is necessary.  That makes upgrading our storage very expensive especially since the bulk of our storage needs are simple footage that is better suited for larger, cheaper SATA drives.
With XSAN licenses included with OSX Lion now and the advent of the new Thunderbolt SANLINK devices which allow Laptops and iMacs to join the SAN at a reasonable cost, we are considering a move back to XSAN from MetaSAN.  But we cannot do this on the main Drive system initially since the Compellant is being used for more than just our AV department.
I want to experiement with a small short-term xSAN to test with our Laptops, etc and try various configurations before making any changes to our large Enterprise systems, but have little budget to do such tasks, hardware-wise.  All of our current fibre RAIDS are being utilized by the live servers, and I can't currently budget a $15,000 Vtrak LUN box just for this process.
One option I would like to explore is using a Pegasus Thunderbolt RAID box attached to a SANLINK, which should automatically convert it to a LUN visible to my existing XSAN network. I might be able to setup MetaData on a separate box connected to a similar Pegasus, or even a simple Lacie Thunderbolt drive in Mirrored mode also connected via a SAN Link. The Pegasus LUN and MetaDATA LUN  would connect to an older Brocade 3200 switch which I'll likely leave open (unmanaged) to simplify the test. MacMini MDC's will also be connected via SANLinks and use a separate MetaDATA network utilizing the 1000Base Ethernet for the private network, and a simple USB-Ethernet adapter for public and administration.
Has anyone tried using a Pegasus RAID as a LUN?  It is relatively affordable compared to most other high performance Fibre storage solutions to with only a $2000 USD 12TB RAID and an $800 USD SANLINK.  I understand there are downsides to having a consumer-oriented LUN attached to the SAN, and for the purpose I've described, it should be reliable enough.  My main question is whether the SANLink allow it to appear as a LUN, or will it show up as just another HBA.  If this works, this could also make a very good bulk storage LUN option for my AV backups.
The SANLINK is apparently driverless - and is platform or computer agnostic, which suggests that it may not only function as an HBA for connected laptops (as it is currently being marketed) but also as a LUN node if necessary.  Anyone Tried this?  If so, any tips woudl be appreciated.

Unless the production release of the SanLINK is different, you can not do what you are thinking.  The SanLINK only works in one direction... presenting FC storage to a Thunderbolt host.  You will not be able to present Thunderbolt storage to a FC fabric.

Now, keep in mind that this does not mean you can not make a SAN on the cheap using the Pegasus arrays.  All you need to do is use cvlabel to label the LUN(s) and then you can make a SAN.  But, this can only be for testing purposes.  Recall that there is no such thing as a Thunderbolt swtich (analogous to an FC switch) so you can only have direct attached connection.  This means that you can test out the SAN performance on a single controller but never be able to mount the volume on another client.
Sadly, while both the Pegasus and SANLink are interesting and promising products (pun intended), they can not supplant the traditional components of Xsan.  At least not yet.  I believe there is a place in the future where Thunderbolt will replace or compete with FC.  But for now, Thunderbolt is just fast direct attached storage.
Hope this helps.  I think I have a production SANLink.  Will try going in the other direction when back in the lab.

  • Promise Technology's Pegasus Storage - will it be ok with Lightroom?

I have Lightroom 3.4 and use a 15" Macbook Pro i7 with 8 Gig of RAM (latest hardware - just purchased) and a Thunderbolt Cinema Display.  I am considering purchasing Promise Technology's Pegasus RAID storage as an external drive.  http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?region=en-global&m=192&rsn1=40&rsn3=47
    My questions are:
    1) Will this work well with Lightroom?
    2) what would be the best RAID configuration to set this up with? (It will do RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10).
    3) I also want to use this as a backup using Time Machine.  Can I do that and still set up RAID?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll let you know when mine arrives early in the new year, ordered two weeks ago.
There should be no problem at all.
Not usre which raid you want and why. I'll be using the Raid 1 set up for mirrored drives. No need to back up for the Promise which will contain only data/images. I'm backing up my new 17"MBP (750GB) to a separate BU USB drive.
I'm getting the 27" dispaly as well - would have liked a matt screen but thunderbolt on the Apple was the swinger for now.

  • Promise Pegasus J4 striped raid - error-36

    Hi
I have a new macpro running mavericks
I have a promise pegasus j4 that I'm trying to set up as a striped raid..via thunderbolt
    I have 4x crucial m500's in it.
Using disk utility I can see the individual drives.
on each I erase date and format as mac os extended journaled
I've individually deleted the partitions on them
I've then selected the 4 drives and created a striped raid set (mac os extended journaled
Untitled striped raid set icon appears on my desktop.
Any data I write to it stops after about 2gb. error -36
I've written 100gb of data to each of the drives individually - all fine.
I've tried using softraid - same issue.
Drive Genius says i/o on disk
Crucial say it's a problem with the Promise Pegasus.
Promise say I'm creating the RAID wrong.
"Current Response : No this is not right. you need to delete the partition then create the RAID and then create the partition and formatting.
but once the Untitled striped raid set icon appears on my desktop there's no way to then create the partion and format - the options aren't there in disk utility - and now their tech support have gone silent.
    Advice appreciated

I encountered this error too, and it does indeed appear to be a weak power supply in the Pegasus J4. I am currently using the device with a sort of hackish work around...
SSDs use maximum current when writing; reading and idling draw far less power. So instead of defining one big RAID set, which causes all 4 drives to be writing nearly simultaneously on large transfers, I set the unit up as two independent RAID volumes, each comprised of two disks. This configuration works well for me since I do not do large writes to both volumes at the same time... this restriction may not be acceptable for everyone. As long as I don't write large amounts of data (over about 2 gigabytes) to both volumes at the same time, everything works reliably. This would tend to support the theory that the power supply just is not up to the task of keeping 4 M500s writing simultaneously for long periods of time...
Hope this helps someone (actually I really hope Promise improves the power supply - this unit is not exactly cheap and a wimpy power supply is pretty inexcusable).
BTW - does anyone know where you can download the Pegasus J4 FW updater software? I cannot find my original CD...
